[Solved] Disable sound events, not using a desktop

I use plain Icewm (simple window manager, no desktop). Some software such as firefox or chromium do sometimes (but not often) make a sound relating to an event. If it possible to completely disable that. The only solution I have found is to uninstall libcanberra but for some reason, this solution is not satisfactory for me. I believe tjhis is some kind of freedesktop configuration but I have no idea how the freedesktop standard relate to sound.

I have tried a few things, but I am still out of luck. To have an example of what I mean, go to http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/ , select "Search for your Video Card" , then put an inexistants card and click "Find video card". You have a small windows saying "String <what you have typed not found>" and a "ding". i found no ways to disable these annoying ding. I thought having found the solution in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Libcanberra but the suggested settings (with false instead of true, of course) does not seem to have any effect. Still completely uninstalling libcanberra solve the problem. But I would like to have a per user settings...

    I'm not using my desktop anymore and transferred everything to my laptop. All of Ipod/Iphone music was in ITunes on my desktop. Friend that was helping couldn't figure out how to import music to my laptop, so she copied/pasted all of it and put into folder on my laptop desktop. How do I replicate my desktop ITunes library ?

    To have  EVERYTHING  as it is Now...
    From your OLD computer...
    Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..

  • Mac users DO NOT use this Desktop software! it will cause hours of heartache

    I have exactly the same issue with a Bold and have still to find any option to resolve the issue other than to entirely wipe the device and go through the tiresome process of reinstalling and updating everything to the way i had it.
    I am utterly furious with myself for trusting RIM to release a desktop option for Mac users. I choose a Blackberry for its push email and i love the device very much, even despite Initially going through 6 Bolds until i received a new one from Vodafone UK that was not reconditioned and finally worked properly. Since then everything has been fine until this amateur attempt at writing software for Mac users.
    I don't have a lot of time to myself and i can think of nothing worse than spending the little time i have searching through endless ill concieved solutions that simply do not work. Just by plugging in my Bold and hitting sync has destroyed my contacts, ringtones and other settings. Why bother to release software until it is entirely tested? Why would you want to put your customers through this demorolising procedure which does nothing more than further emphasise your true lack of interest in supporting anything Mac. I dont want an iphone, i believe that your phones aresuperior for business users like myself.
    Please, please, if you are a Mac user DO NOT use this software unless you really want to go through hell just trying to get it back to the customised form you spent loving hours to get right. It destroys your address book and other elements and not one solution posted anywhere on the Blackberry web site works. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
    The reason i am a Mac users is because i need a reliable hardware/software solution that works out of the box. It is entirely obvious that RIM havent quite realised the long term benefits of this really very simple idea!

    can't win can we?
    this was one reason i've been sticking with the blackberry as well. it appears though that now you can... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1670
    i really have liked my blackberry, and have been waiting for this software for some time now, but if this is rims idea of a client i have no choice but to go to the iphone...

  • Delete fotos in iPhoto events not used in Foto Book

    the problem with this issue is that there is no "indicator" in or on the pictures in the event the foto book was made from which says: this was USED in the foto book/project and this was NOT USED in the foto book/project. So, how to delete those in the event which were NOT USED?
    If you invoke all the fotos of the event on the side of the foto book selection screen those you USED are flagged, the one NOT USED are unflagged, but the iPhoto does not allow at that stage to delete multiple images by using the Command click method suggested when you are viewing the event pictures.

    Do you want to must remove the unplaced pictures form the book or from the library?  If it's from the library and you don't use the ratings try the following:
    Bring up the unplaced photos tray, select one at a time and give it a rating (this works as long as you don't use ratings).  Then create a smart album with the criteria Rating is X.  All of the photos with that rating will be displayed.
    Select them and use the key combination Command+Option+Delete to move them to the iPhoto Trash bin. Then empty the trash bin.
    Warning:  This will delete the photos completely from the library.  Make sure this is what you want because they'll be gone for good then.

  • IPhoto Events not used elsewhere

    I have noticed that AppleTV, my iPod Classic and most other apps don't recognize Events in iPhoto. It's really annoying to look at photos on my iPod or AppleTV and just see this one huge list of photos. Why are Events not recognized outside of iPhoto? Is there a switch I can turn on somewhere?

    No, there's no such switch. You can use Albums - and very quickly make Albums of your Events. Other wise let the developers know you want this feature:
    iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback

  • HT201068 Should I update this if I do not use Remote Desktop?

    I do not use Apple Remote Desktop and honestly do not even know what it is. I constantly get updates for it. Should I update it if I do not even use it?
    This one said that it includes improvements for Yosemite. I do not use Yosemite but MIGHT in the future. Does this fact make it important to use this update?

    What is built into every mac operating system is the Client part of Apple Remote Desktop and it's Client the update refers to. To 'see' where the client 'lives' open the Sharing Preferences Pane in System Preferences. It's called Remote Management. Regardless of whether you use or know what it is, you should update it.
    As always with any Operating System update make sure you have a back-up of anything important.
    The Admin part of Apple Remote Desktop is explained here:

  • [SOLVED] Quesiton about themes when NOT using a Desktop Environment

    I'm kind of lost as to what is being used as a "theme" for applications such as Firefox, when all I have installed is Openbox. I'm totally lost and just wanted to know how I could change it.
    Last edited by brandon88tube (2010-06-06 15:34:32)

    Firefox uses that gtk theme. You can chane it with tools like lxappearence and others that write a file that has configuration about the gtk theme.
    If you use Qt applications with qtconfig you can change the theme as well, normally there's a option to match the gtk theme.
    EDIT: Holly Cow , Wittfella answered almost exactly the same

  • [SOLVED] [KDE4.1] Mucho cpu use with desktop effects enabled

    With KDE4.1rc1+ desktop effects enabled, I'm consistently getting figures of 40-60 percent CPU usage, even when I'm not moving anything around the desktop.
    With desktop effects disabled, CPU use is negligible.
    This is on a Thinkpad T61p with a T9300 2.5GHz C2D processor, 4Gb RAM, nvidia Quadro FX 570M graphics, running Arch64.
    Is this normal?

    Following a suggestion by Pierre, I disabled vsync, which helped dramatically. CPU usage -- with desktop effects enabled -- has dropped from 40-60 percent to < 10 percent, usually around 2-3 percent.
    Vsync can be toggled under System Settings / Desktop Effects / General / Advanced Options. I tried all kinds of other xorg.conf tweaks and nvidia-settings options, but this is the one that really helped (the others, I'm not sure about).
    Several other users have reported the same thing.
    I'm tagging this "solved".

  • [SOLVED] Disable/remove NetworkManager, and use netctl

    Hello!
    I just installed arch linux and gnome shell with only few applications. I was using netctl-auto, which I enabled using systemctl during the installation. Everything was worked fine, until I installed the packages tlp and tlp-rdw. They pulled in NetworkManager as a dependency and now I can only use this and not netctl. When I try to uninstall NetworkManager it doesn't allow me, because of some applications that depend on it. One of them is "telepathy-mission-control" and appearantly gnome-shell is depending on that... I have no idea why this complication suddenly occurs, since everything was working fine until I installed tlp, tlp-rdw and its dependencies.
    Can anyone tell me how to disable or preferably completely remove NetworkManager in favor of netctl, so we can be re-united and live happily in netctl-auto-harmony once again?

    yes. see 'man pacman.conf' for details.
    EDIT: actually it looks like that can't have that first /, so this should work better:
    NoExtract=etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop

  • Enable/disable sound activations not working ...

    We're trying to do something simple -- add music or narration MP3s to a PDF on a page-by-page basis. Adding the sound is easy, and I can click on the play button and it plays. But the <Activation Settings> in the <Edit Sound> window aren't working. <br /><br />We want the sound to play when the end user (using Reader 9) moves from page to page. But choosing, for example, <Enable When> <The page containing the content is opened> and <Disable When> <The page containing the content is not visible> doesn't work. Nothing happens.<br /><br />It should -- and does -- work in other PDFs ... for example, a promotional PDF that Adobe sends out <Acrobat9_Discovery_Kit.pdf> viewed in Reader plays back page-by-page sound just fine. <br /><br />We're on Mac OS running 10.4.11 and Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0.0 and Adobe Reader 9.0.0.<br /><br />Any ideas? <br />Thanks,<br />Bradley

    one to many stand offs ,shorting under board is usual reason you get this

  • Disable sound completely (not mute)

    How do I disable my sound completely? I don't mean mute, I mean make it so the computer ignores the sound card.
    The reason I ask is because I have a MacBook from 2007 that has the common issue where the audio port (combined 3.5 mm jack and optical jack) sensor doesn't function properly. My audio will go in and out, the computer switches between analog and digital (optical) output, with red light shining out the jack.
    All of the common fixes don't work... plugging in a jack, using a Q-tip or toothpick to reset the switch, etc. Lately it's gotten worse, the computer is constantly switching between the two, so I can't listen to music at all. Even more annoying, every time it switches, there is a slight system lag, so during typing or web browsing everything hangs for about half a second.
    I just want to disable the audio completely until I get around to buying a USB audio device to use instead of the onboard sound.

    If I was to work on your machine, I would have disassembled it and tried to fix that physically.
    If we are not going physically, then you should know that Mac OS X speaks and interfaces with hardware via kernel extensions (.kext files) which you can consider it the drivers.
    Removing kernel extensions doesn't permanently disable the hardware components and is not as secure as physical disable. For example to disable wireless on a Mac securely, I would physically remove the Airport card rather than stop or remove the Airport kernel extension.
    Anyway, for your case you should navigate to /System/Library/Extensions and drag :
    * AppleOnboardAudio.kext
    * AppleUSBAudio.kext
    * AudioDeviceTreeUpdater.kext
    * IOAudioFamily.kext
    * VirtualAudioDriver.kext
    to the trash or any backup folder and you will need administrative access to be able to move or remove them, I wouldn't advise to remove the AppleUSBAudio.kext if you are going to use USB Audio interface and honestly I'm not sure if the USB Audio will work if the AppleUSBAudio.kext is in place only or it would neet other extensions except the AppleOnboardAudio.kext , my sense tells me it would require AppleUSBAudio.kext & IOAudioFamily.kext & AudioDeviceTreeUpdater.kext to function but also not sure if that will keep the onboard audio disables, all of that needs some trials and you could do that.
    Further, you should provide some fake extensions, like an empty files with the same corresponding names and make sure you lock them (Right Click on them and choose Get Info then tick the Locked attribute)
    Last thing is to remember to trash or remove them again with every system update you do and to remove the contents of the Caches directory every time you do that including the first time of course.
    I hope this will help you.

  • How long does it take for an iPod Touch to be disabled because of not using it for too long?

    So my Mom took away my iPod, and I was wondering how long does it take for my iPod to be disabled? Like there's no more battery, and haven't used it in months.

    See the part about "Long Term Storage"
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipods.html
    Did you get back your iPod and find its not working?

    In the settings section, I have "unchecked" the "Touch sounds" and "Dial pad touch tones." However, when I use the keyboard, I still get the clicking/slight vibration. Is there another setting that I'm missing?

  • Restore sound when not using headphones?

    Sound works only with headphones.  How can I get sound back without headphones?

         Hi William, begin by opening "System Preferences". Next proceed to "Sound" (under the "Hardware" category). Then go to the "Output" section. Select "Internal Speakers" as your output medium. Proceed to select "Sound Output" from the drop-down list titled "Use audio port for: ". Finally ensure that the "mute" checkbox is unchecked and that the volume slider is at an audible setting.
