[Solved] Display manager failing after Nvidia driver install

I installed Nvidia-304xx drivers from the website due to which xorg stopped working. I fixed it by following the wiki by installing bumblebee and using intel graphics for screen.
However now when I boot I am getting an error saying "Oh no something has gone wrong. A problem has occoured and the system can't recover"
Please help.
Note: I am using 64 bit system
          Startx works on ttyx

  • No display after nvidia driver install [SOLVED!]

    Hi guys,
Just set up my first install of Arch and I'm loving it. Just I have one Problem; I installed the Nvidia drivers as per the wiki for my nvidia 6800gt, but after changing my driver from "nv" to "nvidia" I no longer get any visual feedback from x; "Sync out of range" is shown on my monitor.
When I try to run glxgears I get the following error:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
glxgears: Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual.
The thing is, I load GLX and double buffer visual in my xorg.conf file.
I am using the 2.6.10 kernel on an Athlon 64, msi k8t neo board.
    Thanks in Advance

Hey, by the way, for that 'glxgears' error you mentioned above, I forgot about this.  Read the bottom part.
Could that be part of the problem?  Are you using composite extension?
    * Personally, I removed any instance of multiple "Device" listings (like 'VGA') in mine and modified the "Server Layout" Section, as shown below.

  • Windows 7 Won't Boot After Nvidia Driver Installed, MSI Gaming N770

Hi I just bought the MSI Gaming N770 2gb and after installing the nvidia drivers, Windows 7 will not boot after my motherboard POSTs.
I bought this to replace an AMD card.  I uninstalled all the AMD drivers before putting in the MSI card.  I've also run the Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode and everything.
After a few hours of research, I finally came across a thread about flashing a vbios, and something about these cards not working with motherboards with UEFI bios.
    I'm using a P8Z77-I Deluxe mini-itx board, with a Rosewill 630W psu.
I have both 6+2 PCI pins plugged into the two 8pin power ports on the GPU.
Is this an issue that can be fixed with turning off secure boot? or by flashing a vbios onto the card? Or is the card a dud? Or do I have to re-install Windows.
If the vbios is required, are there instructions on how to flash it? I have no idea how to flash a BIOS.  Thank you!!

Had to update BIOS. All fixed!!!!

  • Bootcamp 'Glowing' windows logo freeze after gfx driver install

Bootcamp 'Glowing' windows logo freeze after gfx driver install
Last week suddenly, after having changed or installed nothing, trying to boot into windows resulted in a frozen glowy window logo 'Starting Windows', which resulted in having to format the windows partition.
Since then I've found out that I can do everything except install gfx drivers.
I've installed firefox, all bootcamp drivers except gfx, swtor (doesn't run of course, but installs fine), quicktime, rebooting is fine after all this...
But as soon as I install any kind of graphics driver and reboot, it freezes at the glowy window logo.
    I have tried;
    The bootcamp included gfx driver
    Windows Update included gfx driver
    Official nVidia latest beta driver
    Official nVidia latest whql driver
    Official nVidia oldest whql driver
    nVidia Cuda driver, both versions
    All give the same result
I have formatted the entire harddrive and written zeros and made the windows partition in a physically different location to make sure it's not a harddrive issue, no luck.
I have tried both Windows 7 x86 and x64 with matching drivers, same results.
Tried booting with no devices attached, no luck.
This all seems to me like a bust gfx card, were it not that under Lion everything works fine, even gaming (WoW).
Techtool Pro's test machine shows no errors.
    My machine is a;
    iMac
    24-inch, Early 2008
Processor  3,06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Geheugen  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Videokaart  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
    Hardwareoverzicht:
    Modelnaam: iMac
    Modelaanduiding: iMac8,1
    Processornaam: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processorsnelheid: 3,06 GHz
    Aantal processors: 1
    Totale aantal cores: 2
    L2-cache: 6 MB
    Geheugen: 4 GB
    Bussnelheid: 1,07 GHz
    Opstart-ROM-versie: IM81.00C1.B00
    SMC-versie (systeem): 1.30f1

I am running Lion on a Mac Mini Server wherein I placed a Bootcamp partition and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. I've been testing Windows Media Center using a CableCard Tuner installed in a SiliconDust HomeRun box.
All was well until I received a Windows notification of an NVIDIA driver update. After the update, I now freeze at the same point that you do in the Windows startup splash screen.
I rolled back the driver using the Windows control panel associated with the device. Still freezes.
Windows repair does not have a fix. I can't get windows to start in "safe mode" so I can remove the additional apps that NVIDIA installed during the update.
I'm certain the freeze is associated with the NVIDIA driver.

  • Display Manager fails to launch [SOLVED]

    Hello,
TL:DR - KDM and other display managers fail to load after major system update, included Xorg.0.log and kdm.log for troubleshooting
I've been using Arch since January 2015 and this is my first major breakage following a pacman -Syu on June 3rd. I'm new to the forums so forgive me if I missed something.
I primarily use kde and kdm failed to start upon boot. I tried startx and xinit from the console. Xinit failed and startx starts TWM, which is the only windows manager I have working.
I tried gdm, which hangs on the following output:
<5>Unable to kill session worker process.
<5>Child process -##### was already dead.
<5>Could not start command '/usr/lib/gdm/gdm-session-worker': Too many open files
    <3>GLib: g_child_watch_add_full: assertion 'pid > 0' failed
    <5>Tried to look up non-existent conversation gdm-launch-environment
    <3>GLib: g_hash_table_find: assertion 'version == hash_table->version' failed
    <5>(gdm-display.c:1141):gdm_display_dispose: runtime check failed: (self->priv->status != GDM_DISPLAY_PREPARED)
I tried lightdm, which returns a shell prompt without doing anything.
My Xorg.0.log looks like Xorg is working correctly:

  • Windows 8.1 bootcamp install fails at NVIDIA Driver Installer

I've been trying to install windows 8.1 natively w/ boot camp on my Macbook Pro Retina, 15", Mid-2012 8gb Ram 2.3GHz.
I had a few issues with partitioning and everything, but eventually got the point where the windows installer ran, allowed me to create my sign in, etc. Then it guided me through the quick boot camp installer for windows. Once this finished, a small window appeared stating to be the NVIDIA Driver Installer. This remained on the screen for a few moments, and then the screen went black and remained so permanantly. On a cold restart and reboot to the Windows drive, it starts right back up in to this black screen. I've already tried to clean install Windows 8.1 again, same problem.
    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you can use Wi-Fi before installing the Boot Camp drivers, I recommend you to install the most recent NVIDIA driver from the NVIDIA website first > http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/73784
The Boot Camp installer installs an older version, so if you are having problems, it is better to install the most recent version, so the NVIDIA driver installation step will probably be skipped.

  • [SOLVED]Full upgrade fails after new install

    Hello,
Please note before reading that I know about the recent changes with the /lib symlink to /usr/lib and the filesystem (I read the home page).
After a fresh install, I try to upgrade the system :
pacman -Syy && pacman -Syu : it asks for pacman update, I say yes.
pacman -S pacman : fails because of glibc
pacman -S pacman --ignore glibc : fails, won't upgrade because glibc it's a dependency of pacman
pacman -Syu : say no to pacman upgrade, fails because of glibc and filesystem
pacman -Syu --ignore glibc --ignore fliesystem : upgrade almost nothing because most of the packages (~400M) need glibc
I can't upgrade anything at the end...
    Thanks for any help

If either of this steps does not work (e.g. due to dependency version issues, file conflicts in /lib), refer to this G U I D E for more detailed instructions on performing this upgrade.
    Did you read this guide?
There is thread about it also: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=144620
And Allan wrote a blog entry about upgrading from core installation: http://allanmcrae.com/2012/07/updating- … e-install/
BTW as Pres suggested go with the net-install, core installation was always kind of a fallback for me and I had to do this just once because of network troubles. It just doesn't make much sense to do core installation if there is no holdback because with first pacman -Syu you'll end up downloading the same amount of data as if you would do a clean net-install, and it's faster and you probably won't get conflicts accumulated from year or so.

  • [SOLVED] systemd services load slow/fail after forcing package install

This is more of a PSA for those coming across this issue in the future. I think people should do more of these.
I recently had problems installing packages where pacman told me several files already existed in the filesystem. This happened when I tried to install an individual official package, not a full system upgrade, so I couldn't find any relevant posts.
I tried to --force install the package, thereby rewriting all such files. But I noticed the next time I rebooted and logged into my system, my Cinnamon session would load extremely slowly (~2 mins) and I had several failed services.
    Symptoms of the problem included:
    - non-root partitions not mounted on boot
    - users and groups added after initial system install were gone (including sudo)
    - difficulty connecting to networks
    - trying to start/restart services resulted in a Polkit-related error and a timeout
So after a while I found this post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151915
It suggested that the polkit-related user and group were missing and I should check my /var/log/pacman.log around the time of my force installation, which I did. This revealed pacman overwrote several files in /etc including fstab, hosts, passwd, shadow and group.
Luckily pacman backed up all those files under the suffix *.pacorig so I by renaming the backups and rebooting I was thankfully able to return my system to normal.

I have another example of rc.local which is mainly about configuring power saving etc etc on a netbook
    hdparm -B254 /dev/sda
    grep -q '0' /sys/class/power_supply/ADP1/online && P="powersave" || P="ondemand"
    cpupower -c all frequency-set -g "$P"
    echo 1500 > /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs
    /usr/sbin/iw dev wlan0 set power_save on
    echo '0' > '/proc/sys/kernel/nmi_watchdog'
    echo '1' > '/sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:00.0/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:02.0/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1c.0/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1b.0/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1d.0/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1d.1/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1d.2/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1d.3/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1d.7/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1f.2/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1f.3/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:02:00.0/power/control'
    echo 'auto' > '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:1c.1/power/control'
    /usr/sbin/ethtool -s eth0 wol d
what is the systemd way of doing this sort of thing?
Also where should local units be put so that they can be enabled/disabled etc. If I put them in /usr/lib/systemd/system won't they interfere with pacman?

  • [SOLVED] Problem with nvidia driver install/uninstall

A while ago I installed the 177.70 driver from nvidia's site, then I was trying to install the 177.80 and to remove the .70 first, I tried
    sh NVIDIA-filename.177.70.run --uninstall
And the installer told me no nvidia driver was found. I haven't been able to install a newer driver since every time I tried X would give me a driver mismatch error on start-up. I am hesitant to manually remove any files, how would I fully get rid of 177.70 so I can install a newer one??
    TIA

See script for the command you should be running:
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.11-pkg1.run -a -q -s -N --no-opengl-headers
Assuming you're on 32-bit. To let Nvidia's installer sort out your mess.

  • Nvidia Driver install problem after new kernel

i recentyl updated my kernel to 2.4.22 and added bootsplash support.. that works perfectly and the kernel works good.. except i have to rei stgall the nvidia driver.. but it gives me an errror that it cannot find kernel header file sources.. i made the package in /usr/abs/kernels/kernel did makepkg.. it made it find and it has a pkg/src directory.. i copied the src of the kernel to /usr/src/linux so theres /usr/src/linux/2.4.22 but it still will not work and cannot make the module and load it.. still gives methat i tcannot find kernel header files... any help would be great
    -bolero

well you should have the headers if you used makepkg to rebuild your kernel as part of the pacakge creates a /usr/src/linux directory that holds all necessary headers.
if you did not use makepkg to build you kernel then you obviously did not create a /usr/src/linux directory (you do this by untarring the kernel source in /usr/src than symlinking the untarred source directory (linux-2.4.22 in your case) to linux (ln -s linux-2.4.22 linux).

  • [SOLVED] Display manager

I am new to Arch. I have installed Arch, X, Mate (as the DE) and Lightdm as the display manager.  Lightdm will only start in X, with the sudo lightdm command. From there, you can get into Mate.
Mate seems to work just fine. However, it would be nice to be able to boot successfully to a display manager and then into a desktop environment.
Before Lightdm, I had installed gdm with xfce. Gdm starts up properly but will not properly start either xfce or Mate. Gdm goes to a screen that is akin to the login screen but with nothing else. I just tried slim, which will not start up, either on boot up or from x.
I am not sure what to post for logs on this. In any event, my computer is an old Dell Dimension 2400, with a pentium 4 processor, intel graphics and 2 gb of memory. I am not sure what log would be helpful here but, if someone could help me with my issue, it would be appreciated.

Cfr: "Did you test X following the Beginners' Guide?"
Yes. I tested X. I believe that I followed the Beginner's Guide to the letter. Of course, I am new to Arch, so it is possible I misunderstood something. I believe what I did was to enter the following command to install X: pacman -S xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xinit and then, as provided in the guide, I installed mesa.
I have, per your suggestion, removed xorg-server-xephyr. I note, however, that the guide for installing lightdm indicates that the package should be installed initially, in order to test to see if lightdm works. In any event, removing it does not alter how the system starts up.
You are correct that I am starting the computer directly to lightdm - and not starting lightdm from X - but lightdm leaves a blank page, as I noted. I can click around on the blank page and stuff pops up. On looking at Oxyd's suggested outputs, I wonder if my problem is that nearly everything in the configuration file has been commented out.

  • Black Screen On Boot After Nvidia Driver

I just installed arch and went to install my nvidia driver right afterwards. I now boot up and after grub i get a black screen. I am 99 percent sure i know what this problem is and i have had somthing similar with gentoo. I have a sandybridge so i have my nvidia card and the intel hd graphics. i remember in gentoo i had to go in the kernel config and disable intel hd graphics . i dont know how i would go about doing this here as i am new . i really dont want a custom kernel.

    SEMI-SOlVED
if you have a sandybridge motherboard and have intel hd graphics on in your bios (Lucid). after the nvidia driver is installed  udev seems to pick up the intel card at boot. Blacklist i915 and intel_agp to fix this problem.
what loads those modules udev? mkinitcpio? is there any way to have them both? like choice your primary video card? im sure if i had two monitors i would be able to boot up with the one pluged in to intel graphics and when X loads xinerma would work with both. i dont have dual monitors but it still would be nice to have an option. is there any sandybridge features in linux?
    Thank You

  • Update display panel from last nvidia driver with MSI VGA OC display ...

    Hello,
I have a MSI NX7600GS under windows XP and I've update the last nvidia driver for ...
But I loose my original MSI VGA OC display tweaking panel in windows xp standard display panel ...
How can I update display panel with MSI VGA OC display tweaking panel and the last nvidia driver ?
     ???

Quote from: AaronYuri on 29-March-07, 23:19:28
    Easy. Manually update the drivers.
    Go:
My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager > VGA card > Right click > Properties > Driver tab > Update driver find the folder with the ForceWare driver > Click OK. Your done.
You'll have to extract the drivers out of the .exe that they come in firstly mind.
I want to keep my latest downloaded nvidia drivers and add official MSI OC tweaking in windows xp display panel, so ... you asked me to find the folder with the ForceWare driver : last (from nvidia) or previous (from MSI's CD driver) ?
And how can I extact the drivers out of the .exe without launching install procedure ?
    Thanks ...

  • [SOLVED] Display manager, GRUB and NTFS

    Hello people
Yesterday I spent whole day on installling and configuring my arch but i still have 3 problems.
1st and most important is GRUB, i wanted to dual boot with windows vista, i have windows vista installed on another partition but now, after i installed arch, it doesnt show on GRUB. How can i solve that problem, i really need it because my family is not using linux.
    2. I cant make the Display manager work, i could install xdm but when i type username and password it redirects to the same xdm. BTW, i followed the documentation from arch's website.
    3. I can not open NTFS partitions, i have installed something called ntfs-3g but didn't help.
    Thanks for help.:)
Btw, i need a network manager so it will connect to wifi network automatically like in ubuntu or windows, i dont want to do "iwconfig ..." evey time ...

There's a wiki on XDM, with a very relevant entry to your problem: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/XD … fter_login
But why use a display manager at all if you're the only one in your family using Linux? To keep away the plebeians?

Thank you very much, now i have windows and i dont care about display manager
I think you're confusing it with a bootloader.
    - A display manager lets you choose a user, and depending on the manager perhaps even a desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, etc) or a window manager (Openbox, xmonad, awesome, etc).
    - A bootloader lets you choose which operating system you want to start.
Yeah, i meant, now, nobody from my family will call me and say "WTF have you done with the computer ", bc i am the only one who uses computer not only for inet. Now, they will use windows:)

  • Error message (GT8500- WindowsXP) "affichage defect" because NVIDIA driver (installed 340.52 updated), but 8500GT/PCIe/SSE2 3.3.0 required by Adobe Premiere 10 message ?? What is the problem ? Thank you for help.

Pourquoi ce message, car le driver de la carte Nvidia GT8500 est à jour !

There is a known major issue with Premiere Elements 10 on a computer that uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card. The answer is to roll back the driver version to about May 2013. You do not want an up to date driver in this case. For some computer operating systems like Windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit, this roll back fix is not possible because the video card/graphics card driver versions available do not go back far enough.
This matter has been written about extensively in this forum for over a year. And, there is an Announcement about this matter at the top of this forum.

which will help you identify the driver version and download/install it.
According to what you wrote and assuming that your Windows XP is SP3 32 bit, your NVIDIA drivers page should look like this after you plug in your data.
And based on history, your choice in the above should be GeForce 320.18 Driver    320.18 May 23, 2013.
