[SOLVED] display-manager.service
How can I find out what is trying to load this service?
I see this in my dmesg and while I don't think it's a problem, I'm just trying to make my server as robust/bug/error free as possible.
[ 4.058436] systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit display-manager.service, ignoring: Unit display-manager.service failed to load: No such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl status display-manager.service' for details.
Not an actual server, but an old quad core PC that has no onboard, and no video card. It's just a spare box used like a server.

Naijeru, there is documentation for a purpose. In this case: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … _boot_into

[SOLVED] systemd display-manager.service problem
Hi!
After the upgrade of systemd, i noticed today this error in dmesg:
systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit display-manager.service, ignoring: Unit display-manager.service failed to load: No such file or directory. See system logs and 'systemctl status display-manager.service' for details.
systemctl status display-manager.service
display-manager.service
Loaded: error (Reason: No such file or directory)
Active: inactive (dead)
The strange thing is why systemd tries to load a service that doesn't exist! And what is this unit for? I'm using slim to load my xfce desktop, and everything works well...
Any idea?
Thanks!
EDIT: Uhm, may be the alias in slim.service, set to display-manager.service, is the problem? Or may be this is not a problem, but it is its normal behaviour , and i misunderstood something! Is it?

There has been a change regarding display managers. up until now they were WantedBy graphical.target, which was kind of stupid because this allowed you to enable multiple display managers.
Instead graphical.target now Wants display-manager.service and all display managers are supposed to install the appropriate Alias. Afaik all display manager service files have been updated ragarding this and a "systemctl reenable slim.service" should fix it. -
[SOLVED] Display manager
I am new to Arch. I have installed Arch, X, Mate (as the DE) and Lightdm as the display manager. Lightdm will only start in X, with the sudo lightdm command. From there, you can get into Mate.
Mate seems to work just fine. However, it would be nice to be able to boot successfully to a display manager and then into a desktop environment.
Before Lightdm, I had installed gdm with xfce. Gdm starts up properly but will not properly start either xfce or Mate. Gdm goes to a screen that is akin to the login screen but with nothing else. I just tried slim, which will not start up, either on boot up or from x.
I am not sure what to post for logs on this. In any event, my computer is an old Dell Dimension 2400, with a pentium 4 processor, intel graphics and 2 gb of memory. I am not sure what log would be helpful here but, if someone could help me with my issue, it would be appreciated.
My x-0-greeter.log reads:

Cfr: "Did you test X following the Beginners' Guide?"
Yes. I tested X. I believe that I followed the Beginner's Guide to the letter. Of course, I am new to Arch, so it is possible I misunderstood something. I believe what I did was to enter the following command to install X: pacman -S xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xinit and then, as provided in the guide, I installed mesa.
I have, per your suggestion, removed xorg-server-xephyr. I note, however, that the guide for installing lightdm indicates that the package should be installed initially, in order to test to see if lightdm works. In any event, removing it does not alter how the system starts up.
You are correct that I am starting the computer directly to lightdm - and not starting lightdm from X - but lightdm leaves a blank page, as I noted. I can click around on the blank page and stuff pops up. On looking at Oxyd's suggested outputs, I wonder if my problem is that nearly everything in the configuration file has been commented out. -
[SOLVED] Display manager, GRUB and NTFS
Hello people
Yesterday I spent whole day on installling and configuring my arch but i still have 3 problems.
1st and most important is GRUB, i wanted to dual boot with windows vista, i have windows vista installed on another partition but now, after i installed arch, it doesnt show on GRUB. How can i solve that problem, i really need it because my family is not using linux.
2. I cant make the Display manager work, i could install xdm but when i type username and password it redirects to the same xdm. BTW, i followed the documentation from arch's website.
3. I can not open NTFS partitions, i have installed something called ntfs-3g but didn't help.
Thanks for help.:)
Btw, i need a network manager so it will connect to wifi network automatically like in ubuntu or windows, i dont want to do "iwconfig ..." evey time ...

There's a wiki on XDM, with a very relevant entry to your problem: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/XD … fter_login
But why use a display manager at all if you're the only one in your family using Linux? To keep away the plebeians?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Start_X_at_Boot
Thank you very much, now i have windows and i dont care about display manager
I think you're confusing it with a bootloader.
- A display manager lets you choose a user, and depending on the manager perhaps even a desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, etc) or a window manager (Openbox, xmonad, awesome, etc).
- A bootloader lets you choose which operating system you want to start.
Yeah, i meant, now, nobody from my family will call me and say "WTF have you done with the computer ", bc i am the only one who uses computer not only for inet. Now, they will use windows:) -
[Solved] Display Manager reject my (correct) password
I primarily use gnome and gdm tells me my password is wrong "Try again"...
I changed my password with /usr/bin/passwd and still have this problem. Even with slim and lightdm the same problem occurs.
However, I can still login with my fingerprint that I registered about a year ago.
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? I am considering wiping my / partition and reinstalling...
Last edited by themax (2015-02-11 10:57:42)Hi,
Is your keyboard properly configured and do you use symbols in your password? For example, if you have a UK keyboard that's not properly set up you may be using a US configuration, meaning some symbols (", @, #, ~ etc) are going to be in a different positions. Just a thought.
Regards,

[Solved] Display manager failing after Nvidia driver install
I installed Nvidia-304xx drivers from the website due to which xorg stopped working. I fixed it by following the wiki by installing bumblebee and using intel graphics for screen.
However now when I boot I am getting an error saying "Oh no something has gone wrong. A problem has occoured and the system can't recover"
Please help.
Note: I am using 64 bit system
Startx works on ttyx

I'm trying to get `slim` working by the systemd method, but I get the following:
[root@arch ~]# systemctl enable slim.service
Failed to issue method call: File exists
I've tried other display managers like qingy, lxdm, etc. and they all provide this same message. I was also able to get the display manager to work using the `inittab` method, but I'm trying to have a full systemd integration.
Not sure if it matters, but I was previously able to get the above `systemctl enable` command to work with gdm. Later, I decided that I wanted a more lightweight display manager so I switched to `slim` and proceeded to uninstall `gdm`. However, it now seems I'm unable to `systemctl enable` any display manager. I appreciate your help!

[SOLVED] Dovecot Systemd Service Fails

EDIT:
ran the process described above: dovecot -F which gave me the dovecot error message. I had a misconfigured file (spelling mistake).

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately it does not work. Out of 4 boots, 3 time I ended up with blank screen. Interestingly, in the last boot I was able to switch to tty1 just after screen went blank and managed to log in to tty. I've restarted the kdm.service then manually in hope the image will be restored, but it wasn't. The restart of kdm then made the screen totally blank and I was unable to switch to tty anymore.
Is it possible that radeon module in kernel has some slow initialization procedure and if X requires its services before it is properly initialized it ends up with blank screen? -
[SOLVED] K Display Manager won't start up at boot
EDIT: I'm retarded. I hadn't even checked to see xorg-server was installed. It wasn't.
Hi,
I just installed package group kde-meta for a full KDE installation including KDM, installed xf86-video-ati for video card drivers, and then ran:
systemctl enable kdm.service
systemctl disable getty@tty1
Now, when I start up, I just get the messages "Starting K Display Manager..." and "Started K Display Manager." but the X server doesn't start up at all. Those messages are left on the screen. Using 'systemctl start kdm.service' does nothing. Literally no output or anything.
What should I do? Also, I know there's not much information, but if you give me some commands I can get some logs. I just don't know where to look for them...
Thanks in advance.
Last edited by Archimaredes (2013-01-25 19:06:33)I've just been experiencing a similar issue. The local Apple Store just replaced my logic board (was overheating without secondary cooling when processor was under a full load, and the fans weren't kicking) for a little more trivial problem. Now that I just got it back, it ran for about 5 minutes before it spontaneously shutdown. I started it back immediately after that, and it went for only another couple minutes before it gave up yet again. After that, it just plain old wouldn't boot. Tried to reset the PRAM...wouldn't even get that far. Tried to reset the PMU...saw no change.
Whenever I try to boot it, I can hear the fan on the left start up and the hard drive attempt to spin up. Shortly after, it makes a subtle chirp-like noise and promptly shuts off. Mind you, I'm getting no display or anything 'cept these noises. I'm trying to get it to the point that I can run the diagnostics program from the OS X disc, but I think I'm going to be lucky to even get that far.
I'm thinking twice before taking my MacBook Pro to get serviced for something that isn't work-impairing now! -
Logitech F310 Gamepad only works with Display Manager [SOLVED]
So I bought a couple Logitech F310 gamepads, for, well, gaming, and I had a hell of a time trying to get my games to respond to them. I run XMonad, and boot it directly via xinit. On a whim, I tried activating gdm and logging into a gnome session, and presto, my controllers worked. I got a bare bones xmonad session file going, and eventually switched over to lxdm just for testing purposes, and the controllers would continue to work like a charm.
Now, I would prefer to not to have to use a display manager, though it's not a deal breaker (though they seem to introduce other problems -- now systemd hangs on shutdown when I'm using lxdm). Still, I'm curious as to what kind of an effect the mere activation of a display manager could have on the system which would cause it to properly recognize the gamepads. To be clear, without a display manager, the pads are detected, are correctly listed in /dev/input. and I can even run jstest and see that they respond well (though they seem oddly configured), but games will not recognize their existence, and so they're effectively useless.
Any help would be appreciated.

Here's a list of processes that run when I'm using LXDM, versus XMonad:
kworker/u16:8
kworker/6:2
irq/46-iwlwifi
login
xinit
irq/44-iwlwifi
kworker/2:2
kworker/2:3
lxdm-binary
lxdm-session
gnome-keyring-d
pulseaudio
rtkit-daemon
gconf-helper
gconfd-2
The modules being listed are the same. Definitely an odd problem. I'm just resorting to using LXDM for now, even though I'd rather not. -
Management Services Response Time; per Role or per Deployment? Broken?
Management Services, Alert on Response Time, appears to be incorrect.
Can you help me understand why the Response Time charts for each Role in a deployment are identical? is this a bug?
My Testing
I have 3 Roles in my Cloud Service Deployment. A Web Role, a worker Role, and an extra Worker Role for this test.
Web Role: Light load 0 to 10 requests per hour.
Worker Role: Generates massive net work traffic. Constantly making web service calls to 3rd party data services & running a Distributed Azure Data Cache.
Extra Worker Role: No load. I added it to test this problem. It does nothing other than respond to Management Services Alert pings.
I created 3 Alerts to Track response time. One to each of the 3 roles, testing from within the same data center; San Jose to San Jose. Then added 3 more to test from Singapore to San Jose.
The Result (over several Months)
A. The San Jose charts are identical for each role.
B. The Singapore charts are identical for each role.
C. The set of Singapore charts are very similar to the San Jose set of charts. With slight variations likely due to internet latency & extra load at Singapore.
D. (most Important). The latency is directly correlated to the network load created by the Worker Role. When I turn it off or throttle it, Response Time on all boxes drops. When working at "full speed" network response time rises
to 10 - 30 secs. (very bad)
Conclusion
The Network Monitoring Response Time Alert is not working as designed. It does not show the Response Time for that Role. But seems to be displaying the Response Time for the whole deployment.
My Request
Can you assist me to understand if this is "By Design". If my testing is flawed? or what is going on.
My Goal
Alert the Azure dev team to this so that maybe they can fix it to function as I expected it to. (or for them to explain why my expectations are unreasonable.)
Why is this important?
Poor Network Perf is a showstopper bug that is preventing us from moving into production. I may be able to solve this with multiple instances. But as I lack the granularity to track even at the Role level. I'm stuck.Thank you for your reply.
I forgot to update this with the answer.
It turned out that Azure Portal's Create Alert/monitoring UI has a bug.
The monitoring service is only capable of pining your public endpoints. ie: your Web Roles. Yet it lets you think you can create an Alert to monitor any of the roles within your solution. To make things worse, it shows a chart that suggests it actually is
pinging your worker roles, when it is actually only pinging the public Web Role.
That is why all the Roles in your solution display identical metrics regardless of their load. Even stopping your worker roles will not affect their ping response times.
If your worker role fails, Azure Alerts don't tell you about it.
NB: Using Application Insights to create alerting does not have this issue. But only because it doesn't attempt to monitor your web roles, not because it can alert you to any issues. -
Hello,
I am looking for ideas/help. I currently have a BB Z10 (10.1.0.2039) with Verizon Wireless. The company has a BB Enterprise Server for older devices (I previously was on that). I bought a Z10 several months ago and have been connecting to the corporate network through Lotus Traveler. They do not have and will not implement a BB 10 Enterprise Server. Some in IT informed that if the company used the BB software they could manage all devices..... not accepted.
All my contacts, calendar, and company email is funneled to the BB Hub.....
So my company is implementing a Mobile Asset Management Service that I have to sign up for (Airwatch?). They only support Android and IPhone.
Will future versions of the BB OS support Android Apps.... Soon (I have less than 2 weeks)
I have read where it is possible to put the device in development mode to run Android Apps. I don't know if that will work with this and have no idea how stable the phone is in that mode. I travel internationally so I don't know how a development mode would work overseas. Any thoughts?
I like my Z10 but will need to switch to keep functionality if I can't find a work around
Any assistance ????
Thanks for any help.Hi and Welcome to the Community!
BB10 devices have the ability to run .apk apps via special methods. Development Mode is used only for installing the app...not for normal operation. So you install (side-load) the app in Development Mode, then go back to normal mode for normal operations.
If a .bar file for the .apk app already exists somewhere, you can side load it to the BB10 device and see if it works or not. If there is not yet any .bar file, there is an app called SideSwype that can convert many .apk apps to .bar and install it to your device.
Good luck!

Solution Manager Service Desk - Segregation and Customization of HR Tickets
All -
The Solution Manager Service Desk is a great tool for incident management in a system landscape that includes SAP, as well as other technologies.
I wanted to find out whether tickets that contain sensitive information (HR-related) can be segregated and "hidden" from support team members that are not supporting any HR functions.
Also, is there a way, assuming tickets can be segregated by function or support team, that the email message users receive upon the creation of the ticket can be custom tailored?
Thank you in advance!
Scott WatsonHi Scott,
Yes it is possible and there are various ways to achieve it
for e.g you can use the security concept below to hide from non relevant team members using
authorization object CRM_ORD_LP
check this link

New Partner Function in CRM (Solution Manager Service Desk)
Hi CRM Gurus!,
Even if this problem is present in my Solution Manager Service Desk I'm creating this thread here in CRM Forum because I thin'k I need the experience of one CRM Expert. Í´ve created this question in Solution Manager Forum also but I hadn´t solved my problem yet.
We add the partner function called "Additional Partner", but I don't know why in the tab "Partners" in the CRM transaction we want to add a new partner but in the partners combo the new one does not appear in the list.
The procedure that I did was: I created a new business partner function and I added this new function to my partner determination procedure, then in SPRO: "Define Partner Determination Procedures" -> I set the option "Only Functions Assigned in Procedure".
These are the values. fro my new function:
Function: ZSLFN004
Text: Additional Processor
Abbrev.: ZAMS
Function Cat.: 0008 Person Responsible
Usage: CRM Customer Relationship Managem.
Relatshp Cat: CRMH06 Is Responsible BP For
The partner functions in my procedure are:
00000001 Sold-To Party (CRM)
00000046 Approved by (CRM)
SLFN0001 System Administrator (CRM)
SLFN0002 Reported by (CRM)
SLFN0003 Support Team (CRM)
SLFN0004 Message Processor (CRM)
ZSLFN004 Additional Processor (CRM)
But in the transactions when I try to add a new partner in the partners tab only the follow functions appears in the combo:
00000001 Sold-To Party (CRM)
00000046 Approved by (CRM)
SLFN0001 System Administrator (CRM)
SLFN0002 Reported by (CRM)
SLFN0003 Support Team (CRM)
SLFN0004 Message Processor (CRM)
I don't know why my ZSLFN004 is not listed in the combo.
By the way, my function was created as a copy of SLFN0004.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
Gustavo BalboaHi Vishant,
Thanks for your answer, but some one in the Solution Manager forum gave me the answer few minutes ago :). The problem was that in some transaction types (I don't know wich ones or if it aplies to all) the category 0008 - Person Responsible can only appear once, my partner function was a copy of the function SLFN0004 - Message Processor and that function is defined with the category 0008, so I had 2 partner functions defined in the category 0008.
To solve the problem I just adjust my Z function and put the category 0016 - Service Team and let the relationship empty. Then the partner function is now showing in the combo at partners tab.
Again, thanks anyway for the time that you take to answer my question.

Request management service issue with SSL Sites
Hi guys,
I've configured up the request management service, but after start the service on our wfe servers (even before to configure specific web applications), our ssl sites begin to fail and the event viewer start to alert several errors, by the other hand,
sites over 80 port with no SSL works as expected.
I've found some similiar scenarios without a happy ending. Below you can find some of the main errors in event viewer and ULS Logs. In
this post solved a very similar issue using ssl host headers with a unique ip but we are using fqdn certificates so it is not an option for us.
I've already checked the
good posts from Spencer Harbar and He says that is good idea to use host named site collection, but this is not an option for me because we need to use Self Service Creation and mixed authetnication, besides, None of the Technet literature that i've reviewed
says something about don't support path based site collection.
So far, the only way to avoid this errors is not using the service(discouraging finding), These are some errors we got on Event viewer and logs:
Machine 'MACHINENAME (AppPool(_LM_W3SVC_515444293_ROOT))' failed ping validation and has been unavailable since '3/28/2014 3:55:48 PM'. (Just starting the service Event viewer begis to have a bunch of this errors)

Medium Mapping URI from 'https://HOSTNAME:443/Style Library/somos-sura-css/inicio/inicio.css' to 'https://MACHINENAME/Style%20Library/somos-sura-css/inicio/inicio.css'

Seems like it tries to find a site with the machine name, not the host name registered in the Alter access mappings (like portal.acme.com) .
I would appreciate some feedback about this. Another posts with similar issues:

Regards,Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you had an issue about the Request management service with SSL sites.
It’s a known issue that the request management service could not work with the SSL site.
We had already reported the issue to the product team, as a workaround, if you want to use the request management service, you can change the https site back to http.
What’s more, the SharePoint 2013 SP1 has been relased, you can install it to check whether it works.
