[Solved] Displaying NTFS volume in Computer?

I've searched endlessly and can't find a solution so far. My NTFS drive is mounted via fstab using ntfs-3g, but the the icon doesn't show up in Computer.
Would it be possible to make my NTFS drive show up in Computer (Gnome)? I hate having to navigate to /mnt/Backup each time instead of seeing it in Computer when using nautilus.

You're right.
I'm surprised the answer was that simple.:|

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

  • Writing to a NTFS volume

    Dear all,
a month ago I bought an external drive (WD - My Passport) to store my iPhoto library as it was taking too much disk space. Although I've read that Snow Leopard does not provide default writing capabilities for NTFS, everything worked fine since a week ago, when I suddenly noticed that the volume apparently lost its writing permissions.
I've seen a bunch of references talking about changing the fstab, but diskutil is not providing me any UUID! I've also seen that some people solves this problem with NTFS-3G, but I've it looks like it does not support 10.6.
Any hint on that? Since then I cannot update my iPhoto library and is being really annoying!
    Cheers

No offense, but I could never get it to work reliably for me. I admit I have not used it for almost a
year (since 10.5.x). It would work acceptably at times, but other times it would be slow as molasses
(copying files) or Finder would be lock up. Sometimes when copying from NTFS volumes OS X would
lock up tight and the only way out was to cut the power. I noticed the problems would surface
mostly when some other Mac Fuse dependent programs were being run at the same time (such
    as Parallels Desktop).
To be fair though, I suspect the Apple 10.5.x Hard disk driver (for my machine) as being partly to
blame as most of the external disk mounting and lockup problems disappeared when I upgraded
    to Snow Leopard.
I suspect Mac Fuse also. I have had various versions of Mac Fuse that didn't work well on my
machine either. When I first put Snow Leopard on my machine I had to use Tomas Carnecky's
compiled version of MacFuse 2.1.7. to get True Crypt working. Now they updated True Crypt and
I have had to use the new Public 2.1.5 Beta version of Mac Fuse to get the updated True Crypt
    working.
Being a software developer I am sure you are aware of the endless problems various hardware
combinations and configurations can dish out. No offense, but I had to switch to Paragon NTFS
to be able to get a solution that worked reliably on my machine.
Some folks use your NTFS-3G product without any problems whatsoever, but like I said,
different hardware combos yield different results.
I have not tried Tuxera, actually I had not even heard of it until a couple of days ago.
The name is cute, how (if you don't mind telling) or who, came up with the label?
Linus Torvolds and that familiar Penguin comes to mind when I here the name.
It's not because NTFS-3G is free, that I don't use it.
I am a die hard "free" fan, I love "free", as in free lunch, free software, free money and of course
    free BEER!

as you can see my partitions are being mounted TWICE which is not what I want or expected!
is there more documentation on what systemd does with mounts that could explain why i have multiple mount points for partitions or is this due to systemd discovering my partitions & mounting them at points based on label names & then parsing my FSTAB as well!
I have read the wikki but there is very small info there & the links have not provided an explanation for this unwanted behaviour

    OK,
After being spurred on to try to do this thing properly, this is what I came up with today.
My fstab line (for a USB NTFS disk):
    /dev/sdb1 /media/samsung ntfs-3g noauto,users,rw,nodev 0 0
Then I created the /media/samsung folder and gave the audio group read/write permissions.
It seems that non-root users can only mount an ntfs partition if they use a version of ntfs-3g with fuse included, so I replaced ntfs-3g with the version from AUR, having removed from the PKGBUILD file the option "-with-fuse=external" (see this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=44844 ).   I also had to set
the ntfs-3g binary to setuid-root, dealt with here: http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g … privileged (note- the instructions say this is discouraged, but it seems using ntfs partitions in linux requires some compromises).
I can now mount the drive as an ordinary user.
Then I set mpd back to run as user mpd, checked the audio group had access to all the mpd folders, and all was well.
One hiccup which you might not have: mpd was unable to access my (external) sound card at first.  To solve this one, I used
    chmod 770 /dev/snd -R && chgrp audio /dev/snd -R
As far as I can remember, that's everything.

  • Unable to read NTFS volume on OS 10.4.7

    Hi All,
I have an Maxtor drive formated as a NTFS volume, which works well with my PC. It is my understanding that in OS 10.4 (or 3) I should be able to mount this drive as a read-only drive on my Mac. When I connect the drive to the Mac it says that the drive is un-moutable and asks me either to format, ignore or eject. Can anyone help?
    THanks

Run WhatSize and see what it shows. People have found what should have been 4k in /Volumes only the drive didn't mount, and now there is 60GB under the Volumes directory.
Look in /private/var for tmp also.
Any P2P BitTorrent or something running and putting software or video in hidden directories?
I run fsck regularly, or boot from another drive and repair the drive. Only time I repair permissions is before or after installs, or if the "Ignore Ownership" was turned back on (which should be off).
25GB is close to 10% free space, which according to MicroMat, is about when hfs+ can run into too many file fragments for the directory to handle, and you end up with a lot or corrupt directory and files aren't available.
If you have Applejack, delete the cache files, but at least run fsck, and do some deep cleaning for now, backup with CCC, do an erase, zero the drive, and restore. But make sure you have a backup soon.
Besides WhatSize there is also Path Finder 4 and OmniDiskSweeper than can help identify where disk space is being used.

Have you tried the restart/reset/restore troubleshooting path?  That would be the best initial set of steps to take, particularly in a situation like this.

  • How can i write on ntfs volume ?

Can you help me to mount ntfs volume in R/W.
    Thank you!

But if one day Apple add support of ntfs write
I seriously doubt Apple will ever do that. It isn't worth their time to put that much development into supporting NTFS write capability.
Paragon went through Microsoft's validation testing and approved it.
Note that I already stated NTFS-3G is free. Also note that there are two different versions of NTFS-3G on the page I linked to. Tuxera NTFS is not free, but is twice as fast as the free version towards the bottom of the page. Both support 64 or 32 bit OS X startup.

  • ITunes Music Previously On NTFS Volume

    Greetings,
I have previously saved the contents of my iTunes to an NTFS volume (Win-7 on a PC) and now need to copy them over to 10.9.3. While OS-X will only read these files (which is fine for copy purposes) I am wondering if, once copied, anything need to be done to the perms prior to launching iTunes.
Current version of my OS-X is 10.9.4.
Any assistance greatly appreciated, and thank you.

Nothing aside from copying them to a writable drive is needed.

    No, not lifetime.

  • External USB NTFS volume

Actually Arch (up-to-date, dbus and hal running) detects that external USB drive as reiserFS, and mounts it accordingly... (= just a couple of directories visible). It's a single NTFS 200G volume, I just want proper read-only access under Arch (no "captive" and such stuff installed).
Any idea on how to modify configuration files (leaving aside static fstab entries) to access it properly?

khazdar wrote:I think you need to compile the ntfs module.
The system can read NTFS volumes- actually I have no problems mounting an XP partition present.
I just don't want to create a permanent fstab entry for the USB disk, but rather let fstab-sync manage it, but I am clueless about the proper hotplug settings.

The next best thing to displaying it on the computer would be a projector or monitor. We've used our iPads to display documents onto a projector, and a PC monitor would work the same way. We used the iPod to Composite Cable found here -- http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB129LL/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Not sure if you just want it on a larger screen, or if you wanted to view it on your desktop.

1st and most important is GRUB, i wanted to dual boot with windows vista, i have windows vista installed on another partition but now, after i installed arch, it doesnt show on GRUB. How can i solve that problem, i really need it because my family is not using linux.
    2. I cant make the Display manager work, i could install xdm but when i type username and password it redirects to the same xdm. BTW, i followed the documentation from arch's website.
    3. I can not open NTFS partitions, i have installed something called ntfs-3g but didn't help.
    Thanks for help.:)
Btw, i need a network manager so it will connect to wifi network automatically like in ubuntu or windows, i dont want to do "iwconfig ..." evey time ...

But why use a display manager at all if you're the only one in your family using Linux? To keep away the plebeians?

Thank you very much, now i have windows and i dont care about display manager
I think you're confusing it with a bootloader.
    - A display manager lets you choose a user, and depending on the manager perhaps even a desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, etc) or a window manager (Openbox, xmonad, awesome, etc).
    - A bootloader lets you choose which operating system you want to start.
Yeah, i meant, now, nobody from my family will call me and say "WTF have you done with the computer ", bc i am the only one who uses computer not only for inet. Now, they will use windows:)

  • [SOLVED] Mounting /home on an NTFS volume

    Hi all,
After having some issues with other Linux distros on my new laptop, I decided to give Arch a try -- after all, it seems like everybody who uses it loves it. For the most part, things went well, but after installation I noticed that all of my files are owned by root and sit in the root group.

Obviously, the permissions mean I can edit these files freely from my user account. But still, every other distribution I have used for a reasonable amount of time -- RHEL, Mint, OpenSUSE -- has set the owner, group, and permissions completely differently. Is this normal for Arch, or did something go wrong during my installation?

Much to the contrary graysky, it's not offtopic. It's why all the files in his home dir are root:root. As such, his whole point is moot.
    Typical case of user error.
Even if you like NTFS, there's no point in using it over native Linux filesystems. There are only drawbacks to using NTFS on Linux. There are better ways to share your data than to make your homedir NTFS - like creating a separate data partition on Windows and mounting that somewhere on Linux (but NOT on /home).
rhallen: please change your topic title to reflect what's really going on . Now it's misleading.
