[SOLVED] dwm: Changing terminal background?

Hello all,
I'm trying out dwm and love the simplicity. I've gotten it up and running but am noticing something odd.
- If I have an .xinitrc with "exec dwm" in it and run startx, it starts up but any terminal (ctrl+alt+enter) comes up with a white background and black font.
- If I rename .xinitrc to something like .xinitrc2 and run startx, the terminal has a black background with a white font.
I want the black background and white font with .xinitrc so I can show the date. I've played around with config.h but don't see anything for the terminal colors (only the 1 2 3 ... bar above).
I'm pretty new to dwm so I might be missing something simple. Does anyone have any ideas?

You also need
xrdb ~/.Xresources &
somewhere in your .xinitrc before you call exec dwm, so your xresources file applies each time you start dwm.
This info is in the wiki and it warns against backgrounding the operation.
Using xrdb to source your ~/.Xresources is pretty instant, so in addition to possibly causing problems, there will probably be no noticeable difference in time either.

I think it's because st is not in the repos.
The [community] repo contains the most recent release version of dwm, which is 6.0. In that release (which was made three years ago) the default is xterm. The default for the Git HEAD is st.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot change the lightdm-unity-greeter background

    Hi.
So I installed the lightdm-ubuntu and lightdm-unity-greeter (which needed lightdm-ubuntu) from the AUR, and when I read both the wiki and the web, they said that I needed to install the lightdm package, not lightdm-ubuntu (when I install lightdm-ubuntu, it conflicts with lightdm, forcing me to remove it). So I installed it, used it, saw the nice login screen, but I would like to remove the dots showing up over the background AND change the background. I read that there is a config in the /etc/lightdm folder, but when I tried finding it, it was not there.
    ls /etc/lightdm showed me:
    keys.conf lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf users.conf
    lightdm.conf lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf~
    lightdm.conf.pacsave lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.pacsave
I do not want to have the background of the login the same as my background when I'm logged in, so I don't think gnome-settings-daemon-ubuntu and accountsservice-ubuntu should be needed. And even if they are, I would like to find a way to change it without installing those packages, since I can't install them easily -- this computer is a school computer and is connected through a filter, which unnecessarily blocks many sites (like say, eclipse.org and gnu.org, but that is not the point), and freedesktop.org is one of them.
I would appreciate if anyone knows how to do that.
    Thanks.
EDIT: Solved. faidoc's answer was priceless.

hi everybody from the Indian Ocean , especially Rodrigues Island-Republic of Mauritius !
I am now running a Archlinux Vm with 3 desktop environemnts such as Gnome, Mate and Xfce4 . I am encounting a conflict file issue between lightdm , lightdm-Ubuntu and lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf !
The system says that lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf creates a conflict and , when installing Unity as per " chenxiaolong :https://github.com/chenxiaolong/Unity-for-Arch" or through the Wiki method I am always stuck ! I don't even have the " /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/com.canonical.unity-greeter.gschema.xml" ! The nearest I've got is " com.canonical.unity-gtk-module.gschema " ! This means that even lightdm-ubuntu-greeter cannot be installed ......What must I do ?

    Hello,
How do I change the background color of a row in a table indicator? I know how to change the background color in a active cell, but that is not what I want. My first intent is to make the background color of the first row a unique color, such as green, just to highlight the top row of the table.

I have done this before by using a for loop to change the active cell of a row in order to give the appearance that the whole row is turning the color at once.

  • How do you change the background color of a page in projects

I'm making a new photo book in projects.  the theme I've selected has black pages.  I would prefer white pages but can not change the background or I would like to change the theme without having to start all over again.  I have no change theme button in the upper right hand corner.  Any suggestions?

Don't know what version of iPhoto you're using but in iPhoto 8 (09) we have this to change the background in the Folio theme:
Wereas in iPhoto 9 and later we have this:
If you don't that in the version you're using try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion delete the contents the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:

    EDIT:
It was my mistake, the truth is that this application can change the background color, but does so in a cumbersome way.
Each note can change the background color (individually) and to make it globally, you must remove all existing notes and the new notes then take the chosen color :S ...anyway.... issue solved

It is probably more likely that your imported pictures are just covering the background of the button.

  • "Change desktop background" instantly hides when opened

I have a rather strange issue that's a nuisance. When I right click on the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background," the system preferences pane opens, but automatically is hidden (similar to if you press cmd+H). I have to click the icon to restore the window.
This does NOT occur if I first open System Preferences and then select "Desktop & Screen Saver," or if I open "DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefpane" from quicksilver.
I have tried deleting com.apple.desktop.plist and restarting, but this did not solve my problem. I think I may have experienced this problem in Lion as well, but I currently experience it on Mountain Lion.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

This same thing happens to me, and while not the end of the world, it is defintely annoying.  Have you figured it out?  Thanks!

  • Issue with desktop Opt/Click (right click) & 'Change Desktop Background'

I have an issue with the opt/click in the desktop in ML 10.8.2. The 'Change Desktop Background' using opt/click (right click) works after reboot, but fails to open (work correctly) thereafter. The 'System Preferences' icon bounces in the dock but nothing else happens, I have either click on the SP icon or re-opt/click (R click) again to get it working. All else seems to be in order but not this. I have tried this with 2 complete full installs & still doesn't work correctly (same issue. I have reported it to Apple, but I was wondering if anyone else experiencing this problem?

So, here's what I've learned so far.
Fresh reboot.  Works fine.  Close and try again, doesn't work.  This you already know.
Here's what I tried to see if it makes a difference:
    I removed:
    ~/Library/Caches
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.*, com.apple.systempreferences.* and com.apple.desktop.*
    That didn't help.
I tried it in safe mode.  Same issue.
Here's something interesting I noticed.  If you open terminal and killall Finder, that refreshes it and makes it work again... for 1 try.
This does, in fact, seem like a bug.
For reference, I'm currently on a mid 2012 macbook pro.  Running fully updated on mt lion.

  • Diff terminal background on diff OS clones

    Hi
Maybe cryptic title, but I would like to have the following.
I have three osx snow clones on my system, because of testing my current developments.
They are most identical to each other and once a while when needed they are cloned using CCC ( CarbonCopyCloner ).
The differences between those clones are controlled afterwards with a script ( echelon.sh ) that make the changes I need.
But the changes in the terminal I would like to have is difficult to control.
First to recognize in which terminal on what clone I am working.
To start with, how can I change the background color of the terminal, depending of the clone partition name <;-)> easier to recognize the next mornig, when I am not yet awake </;-)>
Let say I have the following clones:
    Chimera
    Chimera_CL1
    Chimera_CL3
    and I want
    Partition Name Background Color
    Chimera white
    Chimera_CL1 yellow
    Chimera_CL3 lichtgreen
*My Question is:* +Is there a way in the ~/.bash_profile or ~/.profile to check from what partition ( name ) is started?+
Above is a sample to let me start from, but I also need some different aliases on the diff clones.
I could use three .bash_profile files and copy it with my current echelon.sh script at the right clone, but that means that I have to control more files instead of only one .bash_profil file.
My echelon.sh script is on each clone, but have knowledge where it did start from. It knows the current / path and partition name. So not really excitement.
    Thanks in advance

Maybe not as powerful, but you could use a different Color prompt depending on which clone you are using.
    if [[ $WHO = master ]]; then
    # Black on Red "I am Master> " prompt
    PS1="[e[30;41;1m]I am the Master> [e[0m]$"
    elif [[ $WHO = clone1 ]]; then
    # Blue on Cyan "Number One> " prompt
    PS1="[e[46;34;1m]Number One> [e[0m]$"
    elif [[ $WHO = clone2 ]]; then
    # Magenta on Blue "I'm a Second Cousin> " prompt
    PS1="[e[44;35m] 'm a Second Cousin > [e[0m]$"
    fi
"WHO" is just a made-up variable you get to provide provide for testing.
    Here is a color table:
    # Prompt
    # -foreground- ----bold---- -underline-- --reverse--- -background-
    # black e[30m e[30;1m e[30;4m e[30;7m e[40;fg;1m
    # red e[31m e[31;1m e[31;4m e[31;7m e[41;fg;1m
    # green e[32m e[32;1m e[32;4m e[32;7m e[42;fg;1m
    # yellow e[33m e[33;1m e[33;4m e[33;7m e[43;fg;1m
    # blue e[34m e[34;1m e[34;4m e[34;7m e[44;fg;1m
    # magenta e[35m e[35;1m e[35;4m e[35;7m e[45;fg;1m
    # cyan e[36m e[36;1m e[36;4m e[36;7m e[46;fg;1m
    # White e[37m e[37;1m e[37;4m e[37;7m e[47;fg;1m
    # Reset e[0m
You can also change the title, but that is not as useful, but can be helpful if using multiple tabbed Terminal windows. Just add the following escape sequenct to your PS1 prompt:
[e]0;This Is My Tab Title ]

  • Change sidebar background color

First, themes do NOT solve this problem.
I want to change the background color of the bookmark- and history sidebar. Changing themes does NOT change that background color - at least none of the 100 or so that I tried.
I asked Google, but nothing seemed to match, which is strange, I'd think LOTS of people would ask this (I'm usually LAST asking for any GUI changes, I always use what is there without changing a thing, but this light gray background is a bad fit for most websites right next to it).

This code in '''userChrome.css''' will do that. Change the color code to what you want. <br />
    <pre><nowiki> #bookmarks-view, #historyTree {
    background-color: #DDDDDD !important;
    } </nowiki></pre>
    http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css_colors.asp
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css
This add-on makes it quite easy to work with the 3 "user" files. <br />

I was trying to change my desktop background, so I right-clicked my mouse and choose 'change desktop background option'. The first time I did this, nothing happened (however i noticed that the 'system preferences' icon on my dock was bouncing after I did that). When I tried to do the same thing again, it worked.  I did this several times and I noticed it will only work on the second time. fyi I was not having this issue till today. Anyone else facing the same issue? Do I need to format my laptop or re-install my ios to remove this bug?
sorry for my bad English. Thanks!

    hi! thanks for the reply.
I tried to follow the instructions, but I don't understand with the last instruction which says "Restart the computer and open System Preferences (or problem program) and reset all your preferences again"
I went to restart my computer (after deleting the com.apple.system...), and it doesnt solve the issue. However, I noticed that deleting the com.apple.system the "change desktop background" will work once. but if i close and do it the again, it wont work (same thing if i restart my laptop). I know i am just being anal about this small issue lol, but i noticed some other users experience the same thing as well as me.

  • Change the background colour of windows system-wide? (non B/W)

I have difficulty reading on a white background, but find the White on Black theme doesn't work for me either. The background colour which works best for me is #F9EEE2;. I can work for nearly twice as long in a window with that background colour.
So I prefer apps which allow me to change the background colour of their windows (e.g. [PathFinder|http://www.cocoatech.com>, [iTerm|http://iterm.sourceforge.net>, [Journler|http://wiki.journler.com/index.php?title=Main_Page], [OmniOutliner|http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnioutliner>, [BBEdit|http://www.barebones.com/index.shtml], [TranslateIt|http://mac.gettranslateit.com>). I'll pay for this feature.
However, I often don't have the choice. For example, [PoEdit|http://www.poedit.net/index.php] is the only OSX-native gettext .po editor (since Snow Leopard killed Cocoa-Java and thus [LocFactoryEditor|http://www.triplespin.com/en/products/locfactoryeditor.html]) , so I have to use it. I asked the developer if he could add a preference to change the background colour of the window (PoEdit is Carbon). He replied that this sort of preference should be system-wide, shouldn't it?
From the Linux POV, yes, it should. Do we have that sort of option in OSX Snow Leopard? Previous OSX theme apps ShapeShifter and Mystique are respectively not yet compatible with OSX, and not available any more. I had a look at [ThemePark|http://www.geekspiff.com/software/themepark> (which does support 10.6), but don't know where to start in editing resource files. So what are our options for changing window background colour system-wide? (Or is there a Carbon plugin or library the PoEdit developer could use to embed that preference for his app.?)
Thanks for any help you can offer with this.

I asked a similar question before...as far as I know, there is no option to change this system-wide...short of creating a new color profile or using some hidden Terminal command.
