[SOLVED]e17/gnome media started displaying on desktop.

I deactivated the desktop media display in gnome with gconf-editor, and recently installed e17.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to disable the media desktop icons that have suddenly reappeared in gnome (and incidentally in e17, too.)
I found it in the e17 config menu.  now I feel a bit foolish.

I agree with ya there. I have been poking at e17 off and on, and I do enjoy it. I rather like gnome too, but it is slightly more work to get interesting looks. Your's sounds like an interesting arrangement. I haven't had the time, or spare cash, to branch out into dual monitor setups.
I have found fluxbox and fvwm to be perfect for those times when I just need a quick system up with a couple of basics, like a browser of a real fast WYSIWYG text editor. (sorta like Asus's 15-sec embedded distro) I am planning to put one of them on top of a near core Arch install, and compare it to Puppy, just for kicks.
The only one to really drive me nuts is KDE, and ya, I  know there is a pretty good sized contingent of hardcore KDE fans here on Arch. Something about the way it is organized bothers me, but I just can't put my finger on what it is precisely.
Wow...   at least we are running tangent to the topic in a solved thread.

  • [SOLVED] Black screen when starting GNOME via GDM

    Hey guys,
I'm a bit of a Linux newb, so apologies in advance for any stupidity on my part.
I've just installed Arch in VirtualBox by following the beginner's guide, plus sudo, and now I'm trying to set up GNOME.
I've installed the following packages, with all of the extra packages for GNOME selected:
    gnome
    xf86-video-fbdev
    xf86-video-vesa
    virtualbox-guest-modules
    virtualbox-guest-utils
Since I want GNOME to start, I've run systemctl enable gdm. I haven't made any changes to any configuration files related to X, GDM, or GNOME.
When I boot GNOME seems to load, and the display size scales to fit the size of the VirtualBox window, but it freezes on a black screen.
Here is the journalctl output for the boot:
    -- Reboot --

    Thanks for the response.
I disabled gdm, installed xorg-xinit, and ran startx. It briefly switches to a black window at the correct resolution for the VirtualBox window, then exits.
There's no journalctl entries for it, but there was an X log in /var/log:

properly), started displaying video anomalies (lines); testing
(TechTool Deluxe 3.1.3) indicates the video is failing.
The graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1600. Is this reasonably
replaceable? If so, is the "MPC ClientPro 434 All In One ATI MXM X1600
PCIe 128MB Video Card" I found on eBay (for $25, used) essentially the
    same unit?
My soldering skills are, sadly, poor.
And it only dawned on me a couple days ago that because this iMac does
not have a Core 2 Duo processor, it will not be able to enter the
    "Lion" generation.
    Thanks,
    Patrick
PS Are manuals for this model available? I have a copy of the Peachpit
Apple Training Series "Desktop and Portable Systems, Second Edition"
but it only goes up to the G5 20" iMac. There doesn't appear to be a
3rd or later edition in the series.

  • HT201302 The laptop I was using to upload photos from my iphone is no longer good and I want to use my desktop instead but it is displaying an error that the iphone has no photos in it. How do I start using my desktop to upload my photos from my iphone5?

The laptop I was using to upload photos from my iphone is no longer good and I want to use my desktop instead but it is displaying an error that the iphone has no photos in it. How do I start using my desktop to upload my photos from my iphone5, is there any software I need to download?

Photos on the phone in the DCIM folder are those located in the camera roll. Photos that are synced to the phone from the computer cannot be accessed in this manner. They are synced and the only way to manage them is to connect the phone, go to the photos tab and un-select the folders you want to remove or go into the folder photos are located in and remove the photos you no longer want to sync. Then sync the phone and the photos will be removed.

  • [solved] Starting urxvtc on desktop 1

I would like to start a urxvtc on a specified desktop via the OpenBox autostart file, but I don't know how to do this.
At the moment I have the following entries to get urxvtc started, after starting OpenBox, on desktop 1
    autostart.sh:
    urxvtc &
    rc.xml:
    <application class="URxvt*">
    <decor>no</decor>
    <skip_taskbar>yes</skip_taskbar>
    <focus>yes</focus>
    <position>
    <x>10</x>
    <y>10</y>
    </position>
    <layer>below</layer>
    <desktop>1</desktop>
    <maximized>false</maximized>
    </application>
    .Xdefaults:
    urxvt.geometry: 202x65
When I start a second urxvtc, it opens on desktop 1 with the geometry 202x65. So I'm using Xterm to get a terminal on the desktop I'm working in at that moment.
It would be nice to know the command to start a urxvtc with a certain geometry on desktop 1 via autostart.sh. And to start an second urxvtc on the desktop I'm working on at that moment with the normal geometry whenever I need it.

Let me say hello everyone, thats my first post here
I would like to do the same think with urxvt like NeoXP and i have some questions.
    1) do i need urxvtd (daemon) and urxvtc (client) to do this? or can i do this with only urxvt?
    2) what must i do if i want to run this automatic urxvt but not in desktop 1 but in 4 for example? I ask becouse i think that he run on 1 desktop default. Maby i'm wrong, but i can't understand where its specified that this is desktop 1 for example.
    cheers - udzio

  • Gnome 3 starting in fallbackmode

    Hi all.
I've a Inspiron 9400 with a Radeon Mobility X1400 card. Gnome 3 starts in fallback it says that card have no accelerated support, but when I try a Fedora Live with Gnome 3 it starts correctly in standard mode.
I'm not using t xorg.conf file and I'm using the open source drivers xf86-video-ati (the same as Live Fedora).
    Some logs:

Ok, compilation successful with the above patch applied. I also rebooted to make sure everything will get loaded for scratch and applied export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none in /etc/environment. So far:
    1) Fonts are looking just fine, no artifacts whatsoever in the panel or elsewhere I got so far.
    2) Applications menu still crash.
    3) GTK2 applications also crash. I opened up leafpad, it run, but failed to open a file and crashed the entired desktop. I have no oxygen-gtk installed on my system.
Generally speaking I like GNOME 3 quite much, not as much as GNOME 2, but crashing the whole desktop by just one application or just something less importand like the menu, its just a show stopper. I hope they will somehow fix these issues in the next releases.

  • Mobile media query adjustments effecting desktop - Fluid Grid Layouts

Why do css changes in mobile media queries cascade through to the desktop view, and where is the freakin manual for all this stuff?  I still can't get my head around why anyone would want this. Mobile is the least of my concern, as it's less than 12% of my traffic. Desktop first! Any help?

First off. Watch your mouth Ben. We are  Adobe customers. This is s Dreamweaver forum, correct? Where's the desktop first method in Dreamweaver?
So you're saying how can design be more important that the user experience???  BECAUSE IT STARTS WITH DESIGN.
I have spent countless hours working directly with Adobe and many others in an effort to help answer some of these FGL Dreamweaver questions,a and maybe help create some useful workarounds.  Nancy has helped me with several things successfully in the distant and recent past and I do appreciate her efforts. I think I said that.
Did you just want pick out one tiny insignificant thing and use the forum to come beat me up?
Second, where were you when this question was asked previously? (and not only by me)  Now all of the sudden, you chime in with more redundant information.
Third, this topic is widely discussed everywhere and is often frequent frustration by many skilled designers and developers. Why are we doing this?
Fourth, if a clients mobile traffic is less than 15-20%, mobile is not my focus, but responsive is.  And Dreamweaver is our tool.
With that said, I don't prefer that mobile media queries override my desktop media queries. But I do respect the mobile user experience.
We survey all of our customers. So far,  about half of them have said that they prefer the desktop site on their mobile devices, and hate most mobile sites,  and get angry when there's not option to view the desktop site. We are currently working on a switch for this. So there goes 50% of those "user experiences"  Another large percentage doesn't care. And a select few do. But I think it depends on the site. If it's your bank, you want mobile. If it's a wedding planner, a desktop will win out. These are real numbers. Not some Hype.
Im not understanding how mobile media queries overriding  desktop is useful when using Dreamweaver/html5boilerplate for a simple responsive design. (unless there's something am missing)  We have used the program for over 10 years now, and will continue to use all Adobe's products and realize it's work in progress.
Would you please post some of your web work. Maybe I can learn the answers from you. Or a portfolio.
OR maybe you can answer a question specifically. display:block  is overriding desktop display:anything.

My iphone 4 started displaying a message box with the following message: "This accessory is not optimized for this phone. You may experience noise and loss of battery."  My question is: Why is this happening and how do I fix it? (I'm losing battery power precipitously). Thanks in advance for any assistance with this question.

Thanks Kilted Tim, you solved the problem. I'm mightily impressed at the simplicity of the solution!

  • Help!  Batch Capture Changes My Logged Clips' Media Start & Media End

I'd be very grateful for any help on this.
I log a tape with about 40 clips ranging from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. I select the clips and start a batch capture. Everything appears to be capturing normally and I receive no error messages or dropped frame warnings - after my last clip is captured I get a "Successfully Captured" message.
However, as soon as I click "Finished," all of my clip media start's, media end's, and durations in the log window arbitrarily change to weird times. All my media start points are 26 frames too early (I've tripple-checked that "Add Handles" is indeed deactivated), and the media end points make no sense at all.
A clip that was once 44 seconds long is now only 12 seconds long, the media end point moved a whopping 34:03 too early. Another clip will become 2 seconds longer, the media start point still shifted back 26 frames, but with the media end now 31 frames too late. Checking the original files on my drive confirms that only these weird, unusable segments are what has been captured.
What complicates things is that I just discovered today that if I capture locally to my internal hard disk, the clips capture normally (the times remain unchanged). But if I set my capture scratch to my external hard drive (a LaCie F800 2-TB RAID-5 using Firewire-800), that's when the clips start changing themselves. I ran disk utility and found no errors on the drive, and have never had a problem with it or any part of my configuration until the last month or so... the only changes to my system being the regular use of Software Update.
On top of that, my colleague is experiencing a similar problem with batch capture changing his clip times, even though he is using a different computer (single-processor G5), a different video deck (Sony DHR-1000), and a different storage medium (Apple Xserve RAID).
So my question is: What is happening! The only thing I can think of is that perhaps some update has a bug - but I can't find anyone with a similar problem online.
Any help on this would be extremely appreciated! Thank you in advance for your advice.
    Dual 2.3GHz PowerPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4) Deck: JVC CU-VH1 / Storage: LaCie F800 2-TB RAID-5
    Dual 2.3GHz PowerPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Here's an update on this. Both my colleague and I have confirmed that if we capture to an internal or external drive that is not a RAID FCPro batch captures just fine.
But, if the drive we are capturing to is a RAID (in my case a LaCie Biggest F800 and his case an Apple Xserve), then we get dropped frame reports and/or clip in's and out's changing after the batch capture is complete.
We even tried reformatting one of the xServe's and rebuilding it as non-journaled, it didn't solve the problem.
It seems impossible that we're the only ones to be experiencing this problem... does anybody have any help or suggestions!?

I was capturing some tapes so I can start the editing work. Everything was going well, but I noticed a problem with one of the reels, which will make my life **** if I don't take care of it now.
All reels are OK, except one. I made a batch list and captured the clips. The thing is, in the problematic Reel, the media start and end timecodes are lost after the capture.
After the editing proccess, I intend to recapture the used clips in 10 bits, so those lost timecodes are essential to me.
Does anyone have any idea of what can solve this problem? I have tryed recapturing, creating new projects and bins, etc, nothing worked.
    My fcp version is 6.0.6.

My solution for these problems is to copy the tape and digitize that. Make sure you start the recording deck first so it generates new code.

  • How do I change media start timecode?

I'm working on a project that was handed to me after a significant amount of capturing had already been done. Much of the footage (I'm praying that not all of it is like this) was captured using Capture Now, so there is no room left for pre-roll on any of the clips I am now trying to recapture (literally like 2 frames). I searched the forum and the web for a solution, but came up with some solutions that didn't work in my particular case. I have made the clips offline which for other users seems to have solved the problems of not being able to edit the Media Start/Media End timecode, but I still cannot get it to work.
Could it be that since I've used the clip in a sequence, it will not let me edit the timecode? Assuming there is some solution, and I am able to change the timecode, will any clips in sequences be trimmed to match the changes (for example, if I used the beginning of a clip in a sequence, and have now changed that clips beginning timecode, will it automatically trim the clip in the sequence or will it not reconnect at all?)
    I'm working in FCP 4.5.
    Thanks a bunch

    Hey Jack
]Thanks for your continued posts Peter.
Always happy to help out, but thankyou for the acknowledgment! Often busy stressed people on this board forget that essential ingredient of good manners! So thank you!
]Does that really solve it? I'm not sure that it does
Absolutely! I had exactly your situation a couple of years ago, when I took over a job from someone who hadn't left any room on clips. I gave adding extended handles a shot, and it worked.
Once again I am just sorry I did not remember this workaround sooner.
As always, I would do a little test run first. I have mentioned this previously on the board, but I will again because I find it an invaluable tip:
]<small>A good little technique I have gotten into over the years is learning any new functionality in FCP with what I call my “dummy” project, dummy.fcp.
]This is just a normal FCP file with a couple of dozen clips, a few sequences and so on. Nothing too fancy, but designed to tap into most of the essential features, and broadly represent a typical type of job I do.
]Every time I want to try something new, and am worried I might damage existing work, I close the project I am working on, make a duplicate of dummy.fcp, and experiment on that. And I do it a couple of times, just to make sure for myself that the new functionality is well understood and predictable. I even try and do it wrong a couple of times, just to see what the results of mistakes would be like... Better learning through mistakes on your dummy ...
]If things go crazy, I have lost nothing, my current real-life project file is safe, and one of thee following is true:
]• I am doing something wrong -- so I log on here
    ]• I don’t understand the functionality - so I log on here
]• FCP might have a bug -- so I log on here
]• All of the above -- so I log on here</small>
I recommend that you -- and everyone else! -- make one of these dummy projects for yourself, and try this solution out. And keep a copy for later, when you come across that next possible workflow enhancement / project destruction tool.
    Regards
    Peter

  • Edited gnome menus with Alacarte - gnome wont start anymore!

    Hi!
First off; I've had this problem about a year ago, and the only thing that repaired it was to reinstall Arch... I made a similar thread at the time, but didn't get any help.
I use Alacarte to edit my gnome menus, but when I delete the items that I dont use, the next time I try to log into the computer, gnome wont start. It stops loading the desktop while the splash-screen shows, and I can see the mouse-cursor and conky in the background, but no menus or panels, and the splash-screen wont go away either.
Luckily, this time I had both openbox and gnome installed, so I was able to use openbox to write this thread.
Anyone got any tips on how to fix this without reinstalling my os?
    Cheers

Okay so I found a way to work around this problem. If I create a new user it works again, BUT I want my old user back. If I delete my main user, and recreate it with the same username etc, will it use my old home directory with all my settings etc?

If it's in your Dock click it and hold, check the Options and see if it's set to Open on Login.

  • Always mirrors (won't start with extended desktop)

Since upgrading to leopard, I have the following problem: Whenever I plug my MacBook into a particular external monitor (a projector with 800 X 600 resolution), it automatically goes into mirroring mode - even if I last used it in extended desktop mode. I can then turn off mirroring, but all my windows have shrunk (to fit 800 x 600) and have moved. I leave mirroring off when I unplug - but then the next time I plug in, the same thing happens. I want it to start in extended desktop mode, and not automatically enter into mirroring mode. Any ideas?

10.9.3 and 10.9.4 have known issues with displays attached via Thunderbolt (for example see here Second display problem with 10.9.4 and 10.9.4 - Thunderbolt display for 6630M (Mini mid-2011) still broken ).
