[Solved] Early ATI radeon start so vconsole.conf font will work

My console font gets set as per vconsole.conf then changes back to default when the radeon driver and/or KMS starts.
There's no VGA= on my kernel line and no other framebuffer drivers, so according to ATI#Early_start I can set this, but where, the kernel line?
AGP speed can be set with radeon.agpmode=x kernel option, where x is 1, 2, 4, 8 (AGP speed) or -1 (PCI mode).
somehow that will cause an early start? How do I know what AGP speed I want?
Or if I use method 2 from that wiki, adding radeon to Modules in mkinitcpio.conf, having never messed with that file, do I have to comb through lsmod and make sure that anything not in lsinitcpio -a is listed before radeon in modules? How do I know if/which of the suggested 'something'_agp modules to load?

I would go with the second method, editing /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.
stozi wrote:How do I know if/which of the suggested 'something'_agp modules to load?
You could try combing the lsmod output with:
lsmod |grep agp
and figure which module needs to be placed first in the MODULES array. Additionally, as stated in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Font#Examples_2, you need to append the consolefont hook in the HOOKS array near the end of the file. That way, the console font is set after KMS and not before, which I believe to be the issue.

  • [solved] vconsole.conf FONT setting is not respected in systemd

I recently converted my Arch system to a pure systemd setup (as described here), and everything seems to be working as before.
    Well, almost everything.
Prior to switching over to systemd, I had already moved all config settings (except for the DAEMONS line) out of /etc/rc.conf and into the individual config files, and at that time, I had set up /etc/vconsole.conf as follows:
    KEYMAP=us
    FONT=ter-216n
    FONT_MAP=8859-2
When running under initscripts, this was working fine, and I would get the nice Terminus font at my console TTYs. Now, running under systemd, the consoles are no longer using Terminus. Instead, I just get the default font (whatever it's called). It's as if the FONT I set in /etc/vconsole.conf is being ignored.
systemctl reports the following, indicating (I think) that the systemd-vconsole-setup service ran successfully:
    [owner@computer ~]$ systemctl status systemd-vconsole-setup.service
    systemd-vconsole-setup.service - Setup Virtual Console
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-vconsole-setup.service; static)
    Active: active (exited) since Wed, 08 Aug 2012 08:31:51 -0700; 9h ago
    Docs: man:systemd-vconsole-setup.service(8)
    man:vconsole.conf(5)
    Process: 151 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-vconsole-setup (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    CGroup: name=systemd:/system/systemd-vconsole-setup.service
So, I'm stuck. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Yes, you're right. I have updated my /etc/vconsole.conf accordingly.
However, I just tested this, and it turns out that my FONT_MAP mistake was not relevant to my original problem.
progandy wrote:I didn't modify the file, but then I use Early KMS start for my radeon driver.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … _KMS_start
Interesting. It turns out that using early KMS start also solves my console font problem. I think I prefer this solution, since it doesn't involve overriding systemd-vconsole-setup.service. Enabling early KMS start feels like a less invasive change. As documented here, I simply added i915 to the MODULES line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, and then rebuilt the /boot/initramfs-* files.

  • [Solved] Conflict: ATI Radeon HDMI vs onboard sound crashes PulseAudio

Firstly, please excuse my ignorance about audio issues!
I have a mate running Arch who has an ATI Radeon HD5450 graphics card (using radeon driver) and onboard sound also. He doesn't want to use the graphics card for audio purposes at all. He's getting (seemingly) random switches between PulseAudio thinking its default audio sink is the onboard sound and the graphics card. When the latter happens, PulseAudio crashes out.
(Tried setting the kernel boot parameter 'radeon.audio=1' to try and make the HDMI audio work, but to no avail. Though card is in radeon driver matrix saying HDMI audio feature should work with this card.)
Issuing these commands usually gets things up and running again:
    pulseaudio --start && pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.xxxxx.analog-stereo
where alsa_output.xxxxx.analog-stereo is the appropriate string from the 'Default Sink' line of the ouput from the command:
    pactl stat
Tried switching the HDMI input/output off using pavucontrol but after an indeterminate time it creeps back and kills off PulseAudio.
Can the graphics card be blacklisted as a soundcard by PulseAudio or Alsa in some way?
Any ideas to resolve this most welcome!
PS: Had a look through the Arch Wiki on PulseAudio and it helped quite a bit with understanding pactl and pacmd commands.
Edit @29/01/14: Problem solved - by going deeper to kernel level!
    From the wiki:
If both devices use the same module then we can use the *enable* parameter from snd-hda-intel module, it's an array of booleans that can enable/disable the desired sound card [put in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf]:
    e.g
    options snd-hda-intel enable=1,0
    Useful commands to check situation:
    cat /proc/asound/cards
    cat /proc/asound/modules
    aplay -l

    Hi there!
If you're using the latest kernel spin (3.13), you don't have to really put that kernel parameter in your bootloader config anymore because it's enabled by default already. Which DE are you using? GNOME, GNOME Flashback, Cinnamon and Unity have all integrated with pulseaudio and no extra configuration is needed. If you're using Xfce, LXDE, KDE or any other WM/DE, you'll have to install pulseaudio-alsa and alsa-utils to get it working. That made my HDMI audio work out of the box on my ancient KDE session with the open source driver.
    I hope this helps!
    Best of Luck
    Hi,
okay I just removed the kernel option, thanks for the advice!
I'm using xfce and I already had installed pulseaudio-alsa and alsa-utils, anyway the strange thing is that before switching to headphones (on the other card) it worked, but now it seems that is dead...
    Thank you for helping!

  • Vconsole.conf does not work correctly

I have a freshly installed arch with systemd. The problem is quite simple, i need the consolefont "lat2-16" to display my Czech characters correctly.
    If I use
    setfont lat2-16
everything works fine. But this obviously doesn't last after reboot. The solution should be putting the FONT in vconsole.conf, right?
    my vconsole.conf :
    KEYMAP=cz-qwertz
    FONT=lat2-16
    FONT_MAP=8858-2_to_uni
but the tty loads the "default" font, i.e. some other than I need. Do I have to put "setfont" to some script or what to make it work? What could possibly make this simple thing not work?

Try adding your graphics driver to mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilding your initramfs. See this thread.

  • Microsoft keyboard, blank screen.how START install cd so emacG5 will work?

I have a microsoft keyboard, not the apple so i can't open my cd rom that way.
My screen just stays at the grey screen with white apple and black rectangle glitch.
I need to start the install cd (which isn't the original - if that makes a difference any)
How can i start the install disk with all these complications? And how will i know if it's a failed computer and no longer my inexperience and ignorance?
please help, i've been at this for a few months!!
emac g5   Mac OS X (10.0.x)   broke. grey screen.

    sally stone,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Holding the mouse button down at startup should force-eject all removable media and open the optical tray.
Is the OS X Install disk you're trying to use a commercial disk? The commercial OS X discs for 10.3 and later have black labels, while the model-specific discs that ship with a particular Mac have grey labels and are further labeled with the name of the Mac model for which the disc was made. You'll need either a model-specific disc that matche the particular eMac model (matching graphics hardware especially; don't try to use a nVidia graphics emac disc on an ATI graphics Mac), or a commercial OS X disc, a version at least as great as the OS X version that shipped with the eMac in the first place (e.g., don't try to use a OS X 10.2 disk on a 1.25 GHz eMac). Doing otherwise will mean you're trying to use an OS X disc that doesn't have the full set of drivers needed for the particular eMac model you have.
You can check eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model to help determine if you have the correct startup disc.
How to use the startup disc to check the hard drive is explained in Using Disk Utility and fsck
If you haven't already done so, try How to Start Up in Safe Mode after disconnecting everything except the keyboard and mouse.
Is the mouse an optical USB model? There have been posts from at least one user who's problems turned out to be due to using a PS2-to-USB adapter on an old mouse --- avoid those adapters!
What discs do you have that came with the eMac? In particular do you have a separate eMac Apple Hardware Test (AHT) CD or an eMac-specific Restore DVD with AHT on a DVD partition?

  • Is FCPX compatible ATI Radeon HD 2600

Is FCPX compatible ATI Radeon HD 2600 ?
    Thanks

There is a work around - which of course Apple won't tell you about.
If you have another Mac which will allow the download - you can back that up, then simply drop the app into your Mac Pro or iMac with the ATI Radeon HD 2600.
I and a few others have done this and it all works fine!!!
Of course Apple will not support this, but frankly I've never needed their support, just these communities pages for these products.
So far FCPX is working just fine.

Even if they make it available, does this change mean other Radeon 5870 based cards will work in the system? If so, does this mean Radeon 5870 based eyefinity 6 cards will work with the new mac pros, and hopefully the old ones with a driver/software update? That would make it an even more significant refresh from a graphics point of view...
In any case, if other 5870 based cards would work, that would be the easiest solution for getting hold of the required card as there are loads of cards already available for purchase based on the 5870 GPU...

    Hi guys:
I recently got a 300hd for my Toshiba and need to run all my software; which wasnt running on Vista; so I install Windows XP SP2 on my new HD.
So far all my USB, ethernet, sound, mic and other are runnind good; but when it comes to the video, is nothing but headaches and trouble.
The Toshiba website doesn't support XP, so I went to the ATI web site and found the ATI Radeon 3100. mothernboard integrated, after installatio, nothing works and gets black.
Many things I tried, and yet can't make it work, I'm only running VGA mode and I can't take advantage of my video capabilities.
I need the video ASAP, as of my software won't run on VISTA or runs with major problems.
Please, anybody with a trick or a better video driver.
Be advice my computer didnt come with any drives CD or software replacements. I download everything from the web.
    Thanks

I think Flgrx simply does not support cards that are that old anymore. Use an older version or use xf86-video-ati which probably will be the better choice for you card anyways.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro + ATI Radeon HD 4870 = Not working

Just took delivery of my new HD 4870 video card today. I installed it in my Early 2008 Mac Pro and booted up. I got a picture no problem on one monitor, but nothing on the other. Furthermore, the display perfpane was missing a lot of controls, like Arrangement and Detect Displays and whatnot.
I did a bunch of rebooting and swapping of cables, and determined that both the mini-display port and the standard DVI connection will drive a monitor. However, if both are plugged in, the only active display is the one plugged into the mini-display port, and there's no option to setup the secondary display.
So I booted into bootcamp, and it automatically recognized both display ports, and mirrored my desktop on both monitors. I downloaded and installed the latest windows drivers, rebooted the machine into windows once more, and was able to configure a multiple monitor display with no problem.
This tells me it's not the card and it's not the motherboard.
Booting back into mac OS, I discovered that it doesn't even recognize that the card has video ram. It thought I had no video ram in the system.
So, this all leads me to the conclusion that Apple shipped me a card that it has not yet provided driver support for.
Hey Apple, can I have my 4870 display driver now?

    Hi again,
It was funny to read all your answers on my iPhone while away from my computer. I could have reply on the iPhone but I preferred to wait to give you all the procedure I used to install the beta driver successfully this morning.
To start, I found this link:
    http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=155477
and followed the "4870 INSTRUCTIONS", starting like suggested by doing the "First, follow the 4850 INSTRUCTIONS above"... (See the link)
I would like also to specify that I did this without having installed the card physically yet. So I kept my HD 2600 in the computer, followed all the steps excepted for the step 3:
    3. Reboot with -f -v (kextcache/verbose mode)
There is no -f nor -v switches available for the reboot command at the shell prompt. I simply rebooted as usual "Pomme -> Redémarrer".
After the reboot, all my software was still working as expected with my HD 2600 card, meaning that these steps are specific and active only for the HD 4870 when it's detected at boot-up.
You may have to Google for the string "Kext" in order to get the application to install the file ATY_Motmot.kext. For your information, ATY_Motmot filename is the same string as the one found under "System Information ->PCI cards" under "Name".
    I get:
    ATI Radeon HD 4870:
    Name: ATY, Motmot
The article is not clear regarding where to find the OpenGL.framework to backup before installing the downloaded one. I found mine under:
    /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.5.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework
After having shutdown the computer, just after the reboot that proofed everything was ok, I removed the original HD 2600 card and put back the new HD 4870 and boot up...
Then I check the "System Information" and found both "Quartz Extreme" and "Core image" supported!
    I launched Aperture, got it!
I launched Final Cut Express, got it!
I launched Starry Night Pro Plus, got it! Then I checked the OpenGL settings in Starry Night Pro PLus and activated both options:
    Use shaders where available
Use AllSky shader (Not compatible with all hardware)
When I was doing these actions with my original HD 2600 card, the software was giving me a warning that my hardware did not support these options and that it could crash.
This time, with the HD 4870, it accepted my settings and give me back a very beautiful blue sky with much more shades!
So in conclusion, it works very smoothtly with my system and I am writing this with two monitors, having bought the MiniDP to DVI adapter this afternoon
    I am happy!
P.S.: A girl from Apple support called me back this afternoon regarding my problem. She was very happy two when I told her that I did apply the beta driver and that it was working very well...
    Good luck and best regards...

  • Ati Radeon 9800 Pro won't start up mac!

I just got this Ati Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB AGP from ebay and installed it promptly but my mac just won't start up!
I tried placing back my existing nvidia card and it booted up fine. Am i being ripped off with a PC version or something? I noticed there's a extra piece of chip to insert from my old nvdia card but not the new ati one.
But i checked on the net and found that the ati radeon 9800 mac cards also do not have that extra chip.
    Here's a URL of the card i bought. (http://i4.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/da/aa/1988_1.JPG)
Any idea or advice guys? Thanks in advance.

    Hi-
The image is just a stock image from ATI, of a 9800 Pro- which one is impossible to tell.
Since you are calling the card a 256mb version, the card is a PC card (unless it,s blue). It was advertised as a Mac card? If so, it has been flashed. BUT, if it is an 8x AGP card, it needs pins #3 and #11 taped to work in your 4x AGP QS. See this article.
Do you have the eBay link to the card that you bought (the listing)?

  • [SOLVED]/etc/vconsole.conf doesn't react to any change

    Hi,
I'm new in Arch Linux, so sorry if I'm missreading something.
I try to change my font and keymap using this manual: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KEYMAP
So i edit /etc/vconsole.conf like this:
    KEYMAP=cz-lat2
    FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
but nothing change, even after reboot. "kbd" is installed.
Btw. when I run "setfont Lat2-Terminus16" the font is changed (but just this session).
    Thanks

It doesnt work in any form.
I tried to add i915 to my mkinicpio to modules, but when I run:
    [dan@localhost ~]$ sudo mkinitcpio -p linux

  • [SOLVED] Dell Studio 1555, arch64, touchpad + ATI Radeon HD, Catalyst.

    Hi everyone.
I have a strange problem, that these days is a pin in my ass. My touchpad is not workig, and I need it because I am traveling alot. I checked the wiki. I tryed to set the touchpad via xorg.conf and hal, but it is not working.
That is what I am getting in my xorg log file:
    (II) UnloadModule: "synaptics"
    (II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input//synaptics_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "synaptics" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
I have xf86-input-synaptics-1.2.0-1 installed on my machine.

I have Ati radein hd, and I am using catalyst 11 driver. I added: "IgnorePkg   = xf86-video-vesa xorg-server xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-keyboard xf86-input-mouse" in order to use the old xorg so I can use the catalyst new driver, and it is working. Is this the reason form my touchpad?
If you have some ideas, or you need more data, just ask.
    Thank you all,
    Regards.

You need the older synaptics driver.
    xf86-input-synaptics-1.1.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz
After downgrading, you should add xf86-input-synaptics to the IgnorePkg line.

  • ATI Radeon HD5870 - gains? Early 2008?

Anyone tried one of these with Color yet? In particular, though it's not officially supported, I'm keen to know if it will work with an early-2008 8-core... from AppleInsider:
Though listed requirements state that the card will only work with a mid-2010 or early 2009 Mac Pro with a PCI Express 2.0 slot, reports have indicated that the ATI Radeon HD5870 will also work with the early 2008 Mac Pro desktop.

as far as has been reported here, the ONLY issue with the Apple-firmware 5770 in Macs before 2010 is related to playing copy-protected movies. There have been no other problems, but there have been a few (surprisingly few) failures.
