[SOLVED]Emerald/compiz draws window decoration around conky...

Hi! I've recently installed conky for the first time ever and wish to use it as a simple clock. I have edited the .conkyrc to achieve this, however when I start conky, compiz draws the emerald theme around my conky clock.
Having looked around the web, a common suggestion seems to be to add:
!(name=conky)
To my Window Decoration Window Matching config (it's usually set to "Any") in order to exclude conky from having window decorations drawn. Unfortuntely, this doesn't work.
Another suggestion was to add "-conky" to "Any", giving me:
any -conky
However, this removes window decorations from ALL windows.
Here is my conky config:

You sir/madam, are an absolute star. May kisses rain on you from Heaven always.
I only have one problem left.
My clock text is surrounded in a block of black background. How do I remove this so that the text stands purely on it's own, with a transparent background?

I'm currently using compiz-fusion, and I'm having problems starting up my window decorator.
Whether I use emerald or gtk-window-decorator, the result is the same: my entire X server crashes. Here's a nice little log, I suppose...

  • [SOLVED] Alternatives to gtk-window-decorator and emerald?

I want to setup compiz as a standalone window manager, but was pretty disappointed when I found out that gtk-window-decorator requires metacity and gnome-control-center (which brings in way too many gnome dependencies that I definitely don't want). From what I understand, emerald is unsupported and maybe a little more resource intensive than need be? Are there any alternatives for window decoration? All I need is something that can use GTK themes, nothing fancy. Thanks in advance!

There's a version of gtk-window-decorator (compiz-decorator-gtk-no-gnome) on AUR that removes the gnome-control-center dependency. You will need metacity though. I use it with XFCE.
You should know that GTK does not deal with window themes. There is no 'standard', and you can use whatever floats your boat.
Perfect, this is exactly what I was looking for. Hopefully it'll work without problems. Thanks

  • [SOLVED] [Compiz] Gtk-Window-Decorator

Hi guys, after spending the better part of one of my few free days configuring various apps and so on in compiz [I made a fresh arch install]. I finally got to setting my GTK theme away from the ugly defaults. I've installed the Orta theme for now at least, I'll probably change it once a week. The GTK theme sets perfectly fine, I used the gnome-tweak-tool for that, but the decorations(title bar) do not change, they remain the same default theme that gtk-window-decorator has. I have done extensive googling and have not found a solution yet, anyone have a fix?
Last edited by Multimoon (2013-02-17 14:23:36)

The old gtk-window-decorator (I'm assuming you installed the old stable version of compiz 0.8.x from the community repo) still requires certain gconf keys to be set.
If you find setting the GTK theme (using gnome-tweak-tool) and the window decorations (using either gconf-editor or gconftool-2) independently somewhat annoying, you might want to try compiz-devel from the AUR. It's the same version of compiz used in Ubuntu 12.10 and it's stable (at least as far as I've tested, mentioning because the "-devel" suffix might make you think otherwise). The 0.9.x versions of compiz use gsettings instead of gconf, which means that both the GTK theme and the window decorations can be set/changed using gnome-tweak-tool (or dconf-editor or the gsettings utility).
Also, some themes (the Gnome Cupertino theme for example, as well as Ubuntu's light themes) use some form of padding, shadows that the vanilla metacity (from Extra) does not allow, that might also cause gtk-window-decorator to fall back to its default theme. You can actually check whether the theme will be displayed or not in advance using the "metacity-theme-viewer Name_of_theme" command.
I hope that helps, good luck!

  • Compiz, GTK window decorator not getting along with metacity

    Hello,
Today gtk-window-decorator managed to break on my machine, resulting in no window decorations. I'm using emerald as a temporary solution, but I'd prefer to go back to gtk-window-decorator if possible. When I start compiz, the following occurs:
gtk-window-decorator: error while loading shared libraries: libmetacity-private.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I found some posts that suggested using metacity2 instead of metacity, but I'm using compiz-bzr from the AUR which lists metacity as a dependency which conflicts with metacity2. I tried downgrading metacity, but that didn't help. I'm not entirely sure where to go from here.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for your help!
Installing the stable version of compiz got gtk-window-decorator working again, but now I have no minimize or maximize buttons on any gtk theme (only a close button), and gtk-window-decorator throws me
(gtk-window-decorator:23942): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type '(null)' in cast to 'WnckWindow'
gtk-window-decorator: Ignoring unknown or already-used button name "appmenu"
EDIT: This problem was solved by running
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout "'menu:minimize,maximize,close'"
for future reference to anyone who stumbles across this post. Thanks again for the help!

  • Nvidia + GNOME + Compiz + GTK Window decorator = Glitchy window border

Running Compiz + Nvidia. The window border sometimes goes wacky as seen in the screenshot, but not always. Happens with any GTK theme I have tried.
Does anyone have any idea what's causing this?

  • Usage of Compiz - no Window Decorator

    Hello guys,
I'd like to use compiz so I installed the whole compiz-fusion packages and started the fusion-icon. Now I selected Compiz as my Window Manager and GTK Window Decorator as my Window Decorator because I still want to use Metacity.
The problem is that now Metacity will be not displayed until I select Metacity instead of Compiz as my Window Manager.
What could I do to use them both?
    Thanks

When you use compiz you don't need metacity, and you can not run the both at the same time, and even if you could, it wouldn't make any sense to do so.
What is it the real problem here? No window decorations?

  • Xfce & Compiz & Emerald - no window decorations

Hi, I'm having a problem with my fresh installation of Archlinux i686. I choosed my favourite desktop environment - Xfce4, but I'm not able to get it working with Emerald and Compiz. When I try "emerald --replace" Emerald won't load and I don't see any error message either. On the other hand when I try running "compiz --replace ccp && emerald --replace &" my window decorations disappear and I see this in my console:
compiz (cube) - Warn: Failed to load slide: freedesktop
compiz (video) - Warn: No 8 bit GLX pixmap format, disabling YV12 image format
fuse: failed to access mountpoint compiz: No such file or directory
The result is the same with or without Window decorations Compiz plugin turned on or off. Only thing that can save my ass is running "xfwm4 --replace" which restores xfwm4 and kills both Emerald an Compiz.

  • Firefox has no title-bar/border in emerald & compiz fusion [SOLVED]

I am running compiz-fusion in gnome with emerald as the window decorator and everything is working fine apart from firefox. When it starts up it has no title-bar or window border and appears to be in full screen mode (since nothing else is visible) but actually isn't. I have absolutely no experience working with window managers and am clueless as to what the problem could be.
    Can anyone help me?

I've also found myself facing the same behaviour of the firefox window; I got bored of the F11 x2 workaround, and tried to start firefox from the terminal, to see if there were any strange error message.
Magically, it started with the correct size, not covering anything it should not.
And now it always open correctly from the usual launcher.
Maybe it can be another way to try... for me it worked.

  • Gtk-window-decorator doesn't show window decor for background windows

I've gotten Compiz install and working fine except where gtk-window-decorator is concerned. It starts ok, but it only draws window decoration for windows in focus. The area where the decoration should be is clickable and brings the window into focus. Occasionally there is corrupt graphics where the background windows decoration should be.

Emerald works okay, but I'd rather use the gtk decorator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't want to be a bastard and all, and know that it's only been a few hours since I posted commenting that I have the same issue, but does anyone, absolutely anyone have any clue what is happening?
I have also tried running git compiz fusion and the issue is still there.
Also, when running emerald, the windecorations display fine but there are no shadows - at all.
When using gtk-window-decorator, the shadows exist but are of a similar color to my wallpaper and seem to glow and are definitely not shadowy... The decoration of the inactive window is completely transparent, save for the shadow and occasionally, parts of it render seemingly randomly looking garbled.
The issue is quite annoying since gtk-window-decorator is much faster than emerald and offers better integration with GNOME.
I'm using a GeForce 8600GTS with basically the same config files as the OP. I'm running 32-bit Arch.
I'm using the nvidia driver (as in current - I've installed the system today) and by checking nvidia.com, the version I have, 169.12 is the latest stable one.
So pretty please, with sugar on top, how do I get this working properly. This is the first time I've ever encountered the issue and so, could it be related to Arch configuration or to faulty packages?
Please help, anyone. It's quite frustrating and I really want fully-operational compiz.
    Thanks everyone.
    Sorry for double posting/shamelessly bumping.

  • Gtk-window-decorator transparency / opacity

    hi there,
since I replaced emerald with gtk-window-decorator, things work better now. But I have no clue, why I can't turn off the titlebar transparency for inactive windows. No transparency only works for focused windows, but not for unfocused. I already checked my  Compiz settings for trailfocus, add helper, opacity, but they're all deactivated. Plus, I checked the Settings for gtk-window-decorator with gconf-editor: I changed /apps/gwd/metacity_theme_opacity to 1 (which should be the key), but it just doesn't help.
Any hints or ideas? Am I overlooking something?
    Thanks!

even though I created ~/.config/gconf/apps/gwd/%gconf.xml myself, nothing changes. Except mouse_wheel_action.

  • How to configure gtk-window-decorator

I've always used emerald as a window decorator with compiz [standalone], however, the very latest dev version of compiz is no longer compatible and I haven't been able to find a fix.
Therefore, I've fallen back to gtk-window-decorator, but I haven't been able to find ANY information on how to customize it.
Is there a theme editor similar to emerald-theme-settings?  Are there any built-in-themes?  Or am I just stuck with the default ugly look?
Some places refer to gconf, and gconf-editor, however I sincerely have not been able to understand it, or how i'm suposed to use it.
There are no man entries for gtk-window-decorator, and I've found no configuration files anywhere.
    Thanks for any hints.

Oh... When using one of groups of Compiz other than the -dev ones, you'll need to install the gtk-window-decorator gconf schemas after installing the core package.
    export GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/usr/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source; gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /usr/share/gconf/schemas/gwd.schemas
This will fix up the git package you created from mine and removed the above functionality from. I think it works for the other packages too, but I'm not entirely sure the schemas aren't installed to /opt along with everything else.

no error when starting a normal gnome session
    i have no idea....
if i only had an error code while running fusion-icon....

In compizconfig settings manager > effect > window decoration should be enabled. Check that.
Another you'll need are in Window management > move window and resize window.

  • [SOLVED] compiz wont use gtk-window-decorator with xfce

for the life of me i cant get ccsm to keep "gtk-window-decorator --replace" to stick in the Command line of the Window Decoration plugin section. it keeps switching to "emerald --replace"
is it because im using xfce and not gnome? xfce uses gtk right. anyone have this issue? its not that i dont mind emerald, just on some other distros ive used i can change it no problem, most of those were using gnome though so maybe thats it

n125 wrote:I was actually wondering how to completely install Compiz 0.9.x under Xfce earlier. I managed to successfully install and get running compiz-core-git, ccsm-git, compiz-plugins-extra-git, compiz-plugins-main-git, compizconfig-python-git, and libcompizconfig-git; all from the AUR. But when all was said and done, I was left without a window decorator. I wanted compiz-decorator-gtk, but I couldn't find it in the AUR and the one in the community repo wouldn't install due to not having compiz-core installed (I had compiz-core-git), which left me stuck going back to 0.8.8 for now.
Had you enabled 'window decoration' in CCSM??? (4 compiz 0.9.x?) On install, it is probably not enabled (along with resizing, moving windows, etc). It also won't pick up your 0.8.8 settings - so you need to set up CCSM settings from scratch.. Also, Compiz should have built gtk-window-decorator when you compiled it. (which is why i believe that you didn't have CCSM comfigured correctly with your new version of compiz).
    as for the compiz packages in AUR, can't give you much advice there, as i build compiz myself, using Scott Moreau's build scripts;
    git clone git://anongit.compiz.org/users/soreau/scripts
there are a few build scripts - for both 0.8.8 and 0.9.x - whichever ones end in '++' - are for building 0.9.x ... for both series, there are scripts to build all of the addons / plugins.
building it yourself, may not be your ideal approach, so i would recommend trying the AUR pkgbuilds for compiz 0.9.x , but this time have a look in CCSM, after you install the new version and make sure that you have enabled all of the important stuff like move, resize, window decoration, etc.
You also might want to read through compiz' Wiki, the trouble-shooting section covers your 'no-window-decoration' problem ~ as it is quite common.
