  • [SOLVED] Empathy does not work after gnome upgrade

    Hey there,
    I have upgraded gnome from 2.26 to 2.28. Almost everything is perfect (in fact apps start faster than before) but empathy does not connect to msn or any other protocol.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Tks

    So now we have solved the problem:
    + I deleted all hidden folders and configuration files that belongs to empathy and telepathy
    + I deleted the mission-control folder
    And that's it. Everything is ok.
    Gracias mil.
    don't forget to mark the topic as solved
    p.s. did you check the permissions or did you just remove the files? for other people with the problem, you know.

  • [SOLVED] AMD Microcode update failed (on Xen host)

    I have an Arch system running as a VM Host based on Xen 4.4.1
    It is yet unclear to me why the VMHost (Dom0) cannot update the CPU microcode of the AMD Opteron 3365.
    The following errors appear.
    [ 9.664531] microcode: CPU0: patch_level=0x0600081c
    [ 9.664548] microcode: CPU1: patch_level=0x0600081c

    I am aware that Xen can do some early loading of microcodes, since I have found clues in the Xen git logs.
    But I guess Xen does not update the microcode, since the OS in Dom0 believes it is necessary to update the microcode.
    Does anybody have a clue why updating the CPU microcode from within Dom0 fails?

    I have solved the issue by using the Xen early microcode loading with the following changes.
    Copy the correct microcode binary to the boot folder.
    sudo cp /lib/firmware/amd-ucode/microcode_amd_fam15h.bin /boot
    Edit the Xen command line in /etc/xen/grub.conf from
    XEN_HYPERVISOR_CMDLINE="dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M xsave=1"
    to
    XEN_HYPERVISOR_CMDLINE="dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M xsave=1 ucode=-1"
    Hardcode the /etc/grub.d/09_xen configuration file to load the binary.
    From
    menuentry "Xen ${XEN_VERSION} / Arch Linux ${_KERNEL_PKG_} kernel" ${CLASS} {
    $(save_default_entry)
    if [ x\$feature_all_video_module = xy ]; then
    insmod all_video
    fi
    set gfxpayload=keep
    insmod ${BOOT_PART_FS}
    if [ x\$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
    search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root ${BOOT_PART_HINTS_STRING} ${BOOT_PART_FS_UUID}
    else
    search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root ${BOOT_PART_FS_UUID}
    fi
    echo '$(printf "Loading Xen %s ..." ${XEN_VERSION})'
    multiboot ${REAL_DIR}/${XEN_BASENAME} ${REAL_DIR}/${XEN_BASENAME} ${XEN_HYPERVISOR_CMDLINE}
    echo 'Loading Arch Linux ${_KERNEL_PKG_} kernel ...'
    module ${REAL_DIR}/${_KERNEL_FILE_} ${REAL_DIR}/${_KERNEL_FILE_} root=${GRUB_LINUX_ROOT_DEVICE} rw ${GRUB_LINUX_PARAMS}
    echo 'Loading Arch Linux ${_KERNEL_PKG_} kernel initramfs ...'
    module ${REAL_DIR}/${_INITRAMFS_}
    To
    menuentry "Xen ${XEN_VERSION} / Arch Linux ${_KERNEL_PKG_} kernel" ${CLASS} {
    $(save_default_entry)
    if [ x\$feature_all_video_module = xy ]; then
    insmod all_video
    fi
    set gfxpayload=keep
    insmod ${BOOT_PART_FS}
    if [ x\$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
    search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root ${BOOT_PART_HINTS_STRING} ${BOOT_PART_FS_UUID}

    search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root ${BOOT_PART_FS_UUID}

    echo '$(printf "Loading Xen %s ..." ${XEN_VERSION})'
    multiboot ${REAL_DIR}/${XEN_BASENAME} ${REAL_DIR}/${XEN_BASENAME} ${XEN_HYPERVISOR_CMDLINE}
    echo 'Loading Arch Linux ${_KERNEL_PKG_} kernel ...'
    module ${REAL_DIR}/${_KERNEL_FILE_} ${REAL_DIR}/${_KERNEL_FILE_} root=${GRUB_LINUX_ROOT_DEVICE} rw ${GRUB_LINUX_PARAMS}
    echo 'Loading Arch Linux ${_KERNEL_PKG_} kernel initramfs ...'
    module ${REAL_DIR}/${_INITRAMFS_}
    echo 'Loading AMD Microcode'
    module ${REAL_DIR}/microcode_amd_fam15h.bin
    Rebuild the grub configuration file
    sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    And reboot
    Check with the following command that Xen is running
    dmesg | grep xen
    Check with the following command that the microcode has the correct version
    [arthur@orion1695 ~]$ dmesg | grep microcode
    [ 9.379631] microcode: CPU0: patch_level=0x06000832
    [ 9.379645] microcode: CPU1: patch_level=0x06000832
    [ 9.379662] microcode: CPU2: patch_level=0x06000832
    [ 9.379676] microcode: CPU3: patch_level=0x06000832
    [ 9.379692] microcode: CPU4: patch_level=0x06000832
    [ 9.379710] microcode: CPU5: patch_level=0x06000832
    [ 9.379724] microcode: CPU6: patch_level=0x06000832
    [ 9.379738] microcode: CPU7: patch_level=0x06000832
    [ 9.379823] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.00 <[email protected]>, Peter Oruba
    [arthur@orion1695 ~]$
    And as you see in this example, there is no attempt to update the microcode anymore, since it is already up-to-date.
    I hope this helps other people facing this issue.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome 3.2 fail - black screen with cursor on login

    I have tried to get gnome 3.2 to work properly for at couple of hours now..
    I get a black screen with a cursor, when i should get the login screen.
      And it just stays there at least for 10 min (tested)
    To log in i have to restart GDM once or twice..
    And then suddenly i get the login screen.. Sometimes rendered correct, other times it is not, but it works ok...
    Once i have logged in there is no problem at all..
    /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log - first attempt is a fail..

    Stunts wrote:I also had that problem, altough on a different computer. And by themeing not working I mean "I can't change any dconf settings". It was due to ~/.cache being owned by root (go figure).
    Unfortunately this is not the case for me.  I erased the directory, just in case (perhaps this was stupid), but this does not help easier.  Somehow gnome-settings-daemon is not started, or crashes somewhere on the way.  When I start it manually, then it works.
    I have erased the color plugin (/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libcolor.so) as per advice somewhere else on this forum, but this did not help either.
    Most themes don't work on Gnome 3.2 tough due to an API change. You'll just have to wait for the theme authors to update them.
    I am using the default theme (I believe), so I think this is not the reason in my case .
    EDIT: It was not easy to figure out how to start up gnome-settings-daemon manually. So for the record, I found it in /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon (not in my PATH).

  • Known Issue: People Picker fails to launch in Desktop when PickContactAysnc() is called (Windows 10 Insider Preview SDK and tools, April 2015 release)

    When you launch the People Picker in desktop using PickContactAsync() API, the app will fail to start.

    There is no workaround for this issue. However, you can still complete the process of setting or changing your name.

  • How to solve the "Method invocation failed" error in script?

    Hello,
    I'm trying to modify the script that enumerates all the txt (csv) files on folder and deletes empty columns, but with no luck. The script is working when I execute it on single csv file. But when I put script on loop, it generates errors:
    Method invocation failed because [System.Management.Automation.PSCustomObject] does not contain a method named 'split'.
    At C:\scripts\populate.ps1:25 char:1
    + $b = $line.split(",")
    + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        + CategoryInfo          : InvalidOperation: (split:String) [], RuntimeException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : MethodNotFound
    The script looks the following:
    $files = Get-ChildItem C:\scripts\Results\csv\* -include *.txt
    #Process files by performing a search and replace
    foreach ($infile in $files)
    $infilen = 'C:\scripts\Results\csv\'+[io.path]::GetFileName($infile)
    $infile = import-csv $infilen
    ##remove blank coloumns##
    $cStore = @() # array to store used column numbers
    $rNumber = 0
    foreach ($line in $infile)
    if ($rNumber -eq 0)
    {# ignore header
    else
    $b = $line.split(",")
    $fieldNum = 0
    foreach ($field in $b)
    if ($field -ne '')
    if ($cStore -notcontains $fieldNum) {$cStore += $fieldNum}
    $fieldNum += 1
    $rNumber +=1
    # array $cStore now contains column numbers with values
    $cStore = $cStore | sort
    foreach ($line in $infile)
    $nLine = ""
    $c = $line.split(",")
    foreach ($ar in $cStore)
    $nLine += $c[$ar]+","
    # remove trailing ,
    $nLine = $nLine.Substring(0, $nLine.Length-1)
    $fnFriendly = [io.path]::GetFileNameWithoutExtension($infile)
    $result=$fnFriendly+'cl.txt'
    Write-Output $nLine >> $result
    Also I have found the explanation on this error on this
    link but it seems this is not the case.  Can you help to solve this?
    Thanks!

    You are importing a CSV file which implies that you are creating an object (pscustomobject) and each item in that object is represented by $line. The issue is that this $line has multiple properties (for each column of the CSV) that you need to decide
    on which one to split:
    $c = $line.propertyname.split(",")
    I'm not sure, but it seems that if you are trying to split by a comma, then maybe you are assuming that you did something similar to a
    get-content on the file in which the original approach that you have done would work.

    Can you please provide more details? How exactly did you change the build directory, and to what did you change it to? Also, how can I do the same from within packer, as I'm trying to install lib32-sane from the AUR and it gives the exact same error you got.
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED] external USB HDD fails to install arch w/boot device ERROR

    I've been working on installing arch linux via an external USB harddrive (specifically seagate free agent go 320GB) for 1 week now, and everytime I failed - until TODAY! thankfully I found this post, where user Dieter@be references this link, which displays BUG ID#17231 at the top titled "Can't boot LiveCDs 2009.08 (/dev/archiso doesn't show up)". the bug report states ::
    I can't boot the LiveCDs 2009.08, neither netinstall nor core.
    When it tries to access /dev/archiso it shows these messages:
    :: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
    ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
    You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
    reading further thru this bug report, I found a very insightful post by Heiko Baums (cyberpatrol) where he says the following, and I quote ::
    Problem found. The link /dev/archiso wasn't created.
    After
    ramfs$ cd /dev
    ramfs$ ln -s sr0 archiso
    ramfs$ exit
    it continued booting correctly.
    And sg was also loaded after this. ;-)
    as you see, the bug report was for the CD version, not the USB version - yet, my issue with the USB bootdisk was the same, (no matter which boot disk I tried = netinstall, core, .img, .iso, etc) meaning I got the EXACT same error = "ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ..." ! well, I figured that I'd try one of the new fancy ISOs found @ http://build.archlinux.org/isos/ - specifically I use/used archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso.
    upon running Unetbootin from windows 7, and choose to install the ISO archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso to my first partition on my USB harddrive (that first partition being FAT32, and had already been set as bootable previously), that completed successfully. I rebooted, and choose to boot from USB drive, the ISOlinux bootloader came up as normal, I choose DEFAULT and off it went.... sure enough, it errored out at the same place as listed in the bug report ::
    :: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
    ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
    You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
    this time though, I issued the following 2 commands ::
    ln -s /dev/sdb1 /dev/archiso
    exit
    from there, EVERYTHING worked as it should!
    to recap: the solution for me was create a symbolic link pointing /dev/archiso => to my partition which held the archlinux netinstall (which is where I told Unetbootin to install it to)! done and done. I felt this needed to be posted here, as I could not find this solution after MANY google searches, archlinux wiki searches, forum searches, etc. honestly, I think it would be prudent to have this tidbit of information added to the Install from USB stick archwiki page as a side note to those that may run into this issue.
    this is not the FIRST time I have run into this problem with a USB install of archlinux, but this is the FIRST time I found a fix! thanks to all the great posts I reference here, without this information I dont think I would have been able to install archlinux on my new alienware m11x laptop.
    -peace-
    PS: no amount of rootdelay=XX  nor pmedia=usb  nor usbdelay=XX would work in my above attempts either.

    FAT16 here. Parted Magic sees my USB drive as sdd. I tried your way and surprise, surprise, it didn't work.
    ln -sf /dev/sdd /dev/archiso
    mount -t vfat /dev/archiso /bootmnt
    mount : Invalid argument
    I thought maybe you meant mount -f vfat /dev/archiso /bootmnt instead. I tried it too, it resulted in a kernel panic.
    What else can I try besides installing from a IDE/SATA CD drive ? Because this issue is NOT solved. At least not for me. Wonder if "archlinux-2010.04.05-netinstall-i686.iso" from the here will solve it (really hope so).
    SOLVED IT HERE (with yet another image): http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=93645

    It looks like all the errors stem from LIBTOOL being undefined.  This should give you something to google on.  It *may* be as simple as adding
    LIBTOOL=/usr/bin/libtool
    to the Makefile(s).  But the proper solution would be to fix the autoconf/autotools input file that sets this.  As I have never had a need for those tools, I don't know much about their workings.
    I also wanted to suggest that xcompmgr may do what you need.  There are many bells and whistles that it lacks, but some of the core functionality of cairo-compmgr is duplicated in a very lightweight package.

  • [SOLVED] dkms think "make" fails despite that it exits successfully.

    Greetings. I have a laptop with my own kernel module that I update every now and then.
    So far I made it compile just fine.
    Next I did create a PKGBUILD and a dkms config for it. It worked flawlessly as well, and it has been working for a while.
    But recently, with the latest updates. dkms starts to spit out errors about my dkms package.
    I go in and check what's up.
    Now some strange things starts happening:
    if I try to make dkms to update my module, it ends with an error:
    Command:
    sudo dkms install asus_oled-sg/r103 -k $(uname -r)
    Output:

    So it contains a few notes and warnings, but it compiles just fine. It has generated a .ko file.
    Yet dkms thinks "make" failed. Why?
    If try this, it works:
    cd /var/lib/dkms/asus_oled-sg/r103/build/
    sudo make clean
    sudo make
    No errors, same set of notes and warnings. exit status 0, as it should be.
    Then why do dkms think it has failed?

    Well I finally solved it.
    I had to make some adjustments in the given examples at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dy … le_Support
    Looks like I tried to overdo it. Old versions of PKGBUILD and dkms.conf that previously worked, led me astray.
    This is how the files now look like: (slightly different from what the wiki page above gives. I had to make some adjustments.)
    PKGBUILD:
    _pkgbase=asus_oled
    pkgname=asus_oled-dkms
    pkgver=r103
    pkgrel=6
    pkgdesc="Driver for small OLED displays found in some older Asus laptops. Ugly-patched for >3.14 kernels."
    url="http://lapsus.berlios.de/asus_oled.html"
    arch=('x86_64' 'i686')
    license=('GPL2')
    depends=('dkms')
    makedepends=('sed')
    provides=("${_pkgbase}")
    conflicts=("${_pkgbase}")
    install="${pkgname}.install"
    source=("${pkgname}.tar.gz"
    "dkms.conf")
    md5sums=('SKIP'
    'SKIP')
    build() {
    cd "${_pkgbase}-${pkgver}"
    make clean
    make
    rm modules.order
    package() {
    # Prepare Makeile
    sed -i 's/depmod/\#depmod/g' "${_pkgbase}-${pkgver}"/Makefile
    # Install
    msg2 "Starting make install..."
    make -C "${_pkgbase}-${pkgver}" PREFIX="${pkgdir}/usr" DESTDIR="${pkgdir}/usr" INSTALL_MOD_PATH="/usr/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/extra" install
    # Copy dkms.conf
    install -Dm644 dkms.conf "${pkgdir}"/usr/src/${_pkgbase}-${pkgver}/dkms.conf
    # Set name and version
    sed -e "s/@_PKGBASE@/${_pkgbase}/" \
    -e "s/@PKGVER@/${pkgver}/" \
    -i "${pkgdir}"/usr/src/${_pkgbase}-${pkgver}/dkms.conf
    # Copy sources (including Makefile)
    cp -r "${_pkgbase}-${pkgver}"/* "${pkgdir}"/usr/src/${_pkgbase}-${pkgver}/
    dkms.conf:
    PACKAGE_NAME="@_PKGBASE@"
    PACKAGE_VERSION="@PKGVER@"
    MAKE[0]='make'
    CLEAN='make clean'
    BUILT_MODULE_NAME[0]="@_PKGBASE@"
    DEST_MODULE_LOCATION[0]="/extra"
    AUTOINSTALL="yes"
    asus_oled-dkms.install:
    post_install() {
    dkms install asus_oled/${1%%-*}
    pre_upgrade() {
    pre_remove ${2%%-*}
    post_upgrade() {
    post_install ${1%%-*}
    pre_remove() {
    dkms remove asus_oled/${1%%-*} --all
    Seems this was more like a package problem than a problem with the kernel module itself, as I first thought. Hence the thread placement.
    I am now marking this as solved.

    But I have lots of gspca's:

    The only difference I have with respect to a standard installation is that I downloaded an older version of the backport drivers, and in doing so I surely re-installed gspca.
    So my questions are: where is systemd-module-load searching for gspca? How can I persuade it to search in the right directory? And in any case, why is it searching for it in the wrong place to start with?. Just in case,

    Problem solved, thanks to both of you guys. For some resason, I had a webcam.conf file in /etc/modules-load.d containing the single line *gspca*, which is not a module: both modprobe and insmod fail, because the correct module name is one of those listed in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/media/usb/gspca. They are called gspca_benq.ko       gspca_konica.ko and so on. I simply deleted the file since I  do not need it.
    As for backport drivers: this site, http://drvbp1.linux-foundation.org/~mcg … backports/ has the most recent versions of Linux drivers, backported so that older kernels can install them (I understand this is not a concern for fellow Archers). Whenever I need to upgrade (mostly on Debian) or downgrade (a few times on Arch, because an older version of a driver is free of a newly minted bug) I download these drivers, compile them and install them from source.

  • [SOLVED] citrix-client wfica fails

    Hi,
    I have installed the latest citrix-client from AUR and followed the instructions for copying in the .ini files, and have updated my Arch system today.  I am running on x86.
    When I try and run a Citrix app in Firefox, nothing happens.  If I run Firefox from a terminal and click a citrix launcher link I get the following output:
    execv wfica failed
    The launcher link is a .aspx link which returns some html with javascript that replaces the document.location with a link to the .ica file.
    Any ideas on what the issue might be or how I could debug further.  I have spent the last couple of hours searching for similar issues online.
    Nick

    I had this same problem. I solved it by deleting /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/npica.so, restarting Firefox and associating the ICA file to /usr/lib/ICAClient/wfica.

    Hello,
    Since I updated the linux-kernel to 3.2.8-1 modprobing the kernel module powernow-k8 fails with:

  • [SOLVED] fglrx(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler

    Hello!
    I'm new to Arch so please forgive me if I'm asking about something obvious.
    After spending many hours on reading and comprehension of Arch philosophy I finally dared to install Arch 2007.08-02 (Don't Panic) on my computer Fortunately I was prepared for text-mode configuration, but obviously not prepared enough... My first major problem is with the X server. I have followed strictly the instructions from the wiki and installed xorg and catalyst drivers afterwards (for Radeon X800 Pro). Now probably something is wrong with my xorg.conf, which you can see below, but there's also a bit more sophisticated problem causing this type of message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    (II) fglrx(0): Shutdown CMMQS
    (EE) fglrx(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] removed 1 reserved context for kernel
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA 0x2000 at 0xb7c78000
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] Closed DRM master.
    I couldn't find a solution either on this board and on the web as well, so I dare to ask for a little tip what to do to solve this
    Thx in advance.

    Hello quad3d@work Thanks for the interest, but I've already solved this problem. I think it was something with my xorg.conf file, because when I made some changes to it, suddenly all started to work. If You are still interested in the output of the above command, well, here it is
    [zibi1981@felipe ~]$ cat ~/.xinitrc

    after search the forum, I found a post last year
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=833711
    I only have the file " install " in /var/lib/pacman/local/filesystem-2011.08-1/
    ls -l /var/lib/pacman/local/filesystem-2011.08-1/
    total 4.0K
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.6K Aug 10 07:41 install
    I checked another machine which also installed Arch Linux,
    it's package number is filesystem-2011.04-1
    ls -l /var/lib/pacman/local/filesystem-2011.04-1/
    total 12
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 287 Jul 23 12:49 desc
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1804 Jul 23 12:23 files
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1623 Apr 8 18:08 install
    Should I just copy the " desc " and " files " to my computer, then run `pacman -Syu` again
    or
    Upgrade that machine's filesystem to 2011.08-1, then copy the files to my computer to fix it ?
    ( I am afraid of upgrade error again)
    Thank you

    I just upgraded filesystem to 2011.08-1 on my VM
    then copyed the " desc, files " under /var/lib/pacman/local/filesystem-2011.08-1/
    to my computer, and reinstall filesystem and kernel
    $ sudo pacman -S filesystem --dbonly
    $ sudo pacman -S filesystem

    upgraded filesystem (2011.08-1 -> 2011.08-1)
    $ sudo pacman -S linux
    after edited /etc/fstab,  reboot the computer
    During booting I got some filesystem error warning
    system automaticlly checked and fixed those errors on root partition and reboot again
    Then I can boot into X now

    after searching on the web, I found that maybe an old harmless problem related to kernel ?
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=293179
    also found an error in  /var/log/daemon.log
    Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.Avahi': timed out
    there is already a post about it, but not having a conclusion yet
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=124485
    Every things seen to work fine now
    After few more test and reboot, I would mark this post [solved]
    Thanks to everyone for replying m(_ _)m
    P.S.
    There is still a problem when using virtualbox 4.1.2-1 after reboot, but I think that may not related to this post
    If I try to upgrade kernel of the VM to 3.0.2-1  ( currently 3.0.1-1 ), will cause VirtualBox and my computer crash
    generating some assert error, produce segfault when I tried to type any command in shell
    unable to launch any program in X, but if I switch to tty*, I only got
    INIT:Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
    So I have to push the reset button to force reboot
    after restore VM to previous snapshot, not having any problem so far
