[SOLVED] enchant update lets sylpheed segfault
Today's enchant update to 1.4.1 lets sylpheed segfault - can someone check the replace-aspell-with-enchant.diff in the package or should I file a bug report? Downgrading enchant works fine.

after updating to iOS 6.0 everything is a mess. i cant get in my CO app game, imessages undelivered, worst of all i cant connect to Apps store. If u were able to solve this pls let me know. or if possible to return to old OS 5.1 that is much better. HELP!
I had the same experience with a new iPhone 5 that I bought last week. Did not have a chance to measure battery life before the 6.0.2 upgrade installed but I set up my phone exactly like my 4S and immediately started running out of power after short periods. Went to Xmas get together with fully charged 5 and 4S. Heading home the iPhone 5 shut down for low battery and the 4S had 65% power. Both phones had two half phone calls on then and no data usage.
That night I fully charged the iPhone 5 and, without lighting it up, put it on my night table. Next morning I picked it up and looked at battery indicator and I had 42% charge with NO activity!
Tried it again next night and wound up with 37% charge. (Slept longer).
Today I called the carrier and reactivated the 4S. Took the 5 to Apple Store and they kindly gave me choice of new replacement phone or refund. I took the refund. Uniquely, the Apple Store said it was Verizon CDMA phones that were coming back.
The are other strings on this with temporary solutions, but from my experience with 7 firmware changes on an HTC 4G phone the problem will continue because the solution will be hardware caused. We are in the days where RTM means Rush to Market - not Release To Manufacturing.
I fear the only solution is to either wait for the next model (I did not notice a really major change in performance over the 4S in LTE heavy Seattle area) - or switch to another manufacturer.
It might be useful for these forums to indicate if you have a GSM or CDMA phone to see which have more problems.

(solved)-Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer

[Solved] Update let me without Eth0 - Atheros driver
Hello everybody
I am not a newbie. I'm a linux user since five or more years, and with Arch almost two years
Recently changed my PC and installed ArchLinux. The new box have an Ethernet Atheros AR8161 so I download, compile and install the driver compat-wireless- 2012-05-10
The network card was working until my last update. I restart the PC and Eth0 disappeared.
I did many tests, but can not get Linux to recognize the network card. I have no Eth0.
Data:
Archlinux almost update, x64
PC AMD family
ip link show show me only LO (loopback interface)
I do not want to give details of the tests because I do not want to influence responses.
Thank you

SOLVED - BIOS UPDATE "SYSTEM DOES NOT CONTAIN the NECESSARY WMI SUPPORT for this VERSION of HPQflash
If you get infamous error when updating HP Portables (laptops/notebooks/ netbooks) BIOS within Windows:
"SYSTEM DOES NOT CONTAIN THE NECESSARY WMI SUPPORT FOR THIS VERSION OF HPQFLASH":
I am posting a solution found for own business laptop (HP 8540W & 8760W) so WebSearch engines index/register it in a few days - future sufferers come here and get a SOLUTION, finally. Disreagrd previous "experts" advises, they don't work 100% & pity on TechSupport folks who get HP paychecks yet don't know products their co. designs/manufactures (on deep Technical level):
Below is a SOLUTION (WORKING) !
Go into Services (Run "services.msc" or get there thru ControlPanel-->AdminTools-->), find following 2 services ==> make sure they're running, chances are they're NOT (as in my case I keep them disabled unless need running):
1) "HP Software Framework"
2) "HP Service" [no typo - a real plain name]
If not running, set Properties-->Manual and click "Start", make sure both are running.
Rerun BIOS updater, choose option for "Within Windows" or something to that effect (using HPQ/ROMpaq updater), rather than "create USB BootDisk on Key", this time it should work without the hassle of a BootDisk creation.
Should work from within Windows environment.
Notes:
a) Likely only one (1) service is responsible - namely "HP Software Framework" for HPQ Updater to fail, but doesn't hurt to reenable/restart both services.
I in fact am responding to other customers who elect to Update BIOS within Windows, perhaps oldfashioned but to me Boot Updater is more natural & always works regardless of WMI Support.
b) After done, don't forget:
*) Recheck BIOS settings - update may've added new and/or changed old, so rescan tobe sure.
**) Go BACK into Windows-->Services.msc & redisable both aforementioned Services if were originally disabled; or you're a computer Pro, you know what you're doing & like me keep all HP services disabled. The ones we got on EliteBook 8760W are pests consuming system resources, you just enable "Software Framework" when occasional issues emerge with HP softupdate (typically no issues) & redisable after use, rest of services are bloatware - some attempt to overrun Windows Wireless console, some seekout HP Networked printers (Ethernet, Wireless, but not USB), some do this & that - I study/know which one does what and decided to disable all. This is called a "minimalist" philosophy & turns your machine into a fast beast, I recently sold a very obsolete 4-year laptop which however handles 3DMCAD & complex designs/simulations, better new machines out fo a store, as new machines are loaded w/bloatware chocking down resources.
BUT nobody is requiring you to disable anything though.
The solution merely states the fact:
These 2 (or 1) services when not running halt BIOS Update "within Windows" (you can still run "BootDisk option", however, if preferred).
Simply restartung them solves your problem. Usually
Ya'll have a good day and enjoy!
===========
BELOW ARE IMPORTANT WARNINGS:
1) IF YOUR BIOS UPDATE STILL FAILS, SOME OTHER PIECE IN WMI SUPPORT IS MISSING - IN MY CASE WAS THESE 2 SERVICES, BUT THERE'S REMOTE POSSIBILITY SOMETHING ELSE MIGHT BLOCK UPDATER. DON'T WASTE TIME & CHOOSE "USB/BootDisk" options instead
2) Once BIOS updater does its job, will ask to auto-restart - let it go on & complete, it will self-shutdown (click "Next" to skip 60-second timer), then do NOT turn it on manually!, wait - it'll turn on by itself in 15 seconds, let it boot into Windows, you're done!
3) WARNING: close other apps before proceeding, be 100% sure your ACpower won't be interrupted or better yet - make sure battery is in/charged (so if ACpower accidentally disconnects, you're autoswitched onto battery) b/c power loss may result in severe damage to internal hardware. In the old days it'd result in fatal damage, these days powerloss would still result in a major repair (ROM chip corruption).
So to summarize: those 2 services I specified, are often responsible for whether HPQ/ROMpaq will or won't run.
Other causes possible, but I've not witnessed; and if so - choose BootDisk option.

[SOLVED]Nightly update as user
Yes, I searched but couldn't find related information. Surprising actually!
I had installed the stable Mozilla Firefox package 7.0.1, then uninstalled it and installed Nightly via AUR https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19830
Now, updates are available but it won't let me install them( run as user). Is there anyway to do this without using yaourt/pacman but via the default firefox updater, as a user?
Using Arch x86_64 and Openbox if that matters.
Thanks!
Solved, see my post below.

This did it. For anyone who might have the same issue, do this.
1. login as root in terminal
2. see where nightly is installed.
mine is in /opt/firefox-nightly10.0a1
3. chmod -R 777 the firefox directory
4. exit, run firefox-nightly as normal and update from the Help menu.
Thanks everyone for help!
This is the best arch-hacks and simplest help I have yet found in all Arch (distros) forums. Firefox (nightly and aurora) updated as it suppose to do, without having to be the QUEEN of England (or the pope) to use pacman which "anyway" would be telling me again that keys or packages are corrupted lol ahahah;)
But I did this, as a way to update future other install as well like google-chrome for example.
sudo chmod -R 777 /opt/
This is the kind of "mark as solved" I wanna see and go for whenever I do a google search (or any search to get to the point
Thanks;)
this is making my day... on top of the fact that there is a brand new motherboard-processor-memory kit arriving here in the next hour to put in some box laying around AM D happiest guy tonight happy happy happy -
[Solved again] Updated to linux-3.10.8; Can no longer boot
Hey everyone.
So, linux-3.10.2-1 just dropped to the [testing] repos, and I got it through a standard -Syu. Along with it were upgraded libxfont, linux-headers, lirc-utils (and I installed extundelete during the same command).

Then, because I am on a UEFI system, I copied the initrd images and the vmlinuz image over to my ESP (just like I've done many a time before), and now the system won't boot. It doesn't throw any errors; rather, as soon as UEFI selects the entry to run, the computer just sits there (there is nothing in the logs so far as I can find).
I've booted with a live medium and I've tried regenerating the images and recopying them (the checksums of the images changed, so I figured that might do the trick), but it's still a no-go. Is there something obvious that I'm missing? Has anyone else run into this problem?
[Edit]: Though this appeared to be solved with 3.10.3, the problem appears to have returned with 3.10.8. No actual solution has been found. As with before, a new kernel has been released (3.10.9) with which this issue does not exist…
All the best,
-HG
Last edited by HalosGhost (2013-08-21 17:01:46)So I added /boot to my fstab with option "auto" to not rely on the systemd-efi-generator and /boot was mounted just fine. Then I set noauto,x-systemd.automount and the autofs mount point was created as expected. Then I removed the /boot entry in fstab again and the systemd-efi-generator seems to work fine again...
I'm seriously confused right now...
btw, I did all of this mit kernel 3.9.9 booted. 3.10.2 doesn't boot on my system, it's the famous ""EFI machine randomly hangs while loading kernel" bug again. But this shouldn't have anything to do with the kernel install problem...
edit: I just realized that my "btw" is actually what OP describes. I should have read the thread completely, sorry
Either way, as far as I can see these are two separate issues. The EFI bug with the long thread that I mentioned above and the fact that /boot seems to not mount in some cases. I did some more testing regarding this, but I still have no idea what is happening. I could have sworn there was no automount point set up by systemd at some point, which would have made sense. But I can't reproduce it anymore...

[SOLVED] Windows Update not working after Cloning Hard Disk!
Lenovo T61p with Intel Turbo Memory - Cloning HDD with Advanced Format (4K Cluster) HDD
I have been beating my head against my desk for the past day trying to figure out the problems I am having.
I have a Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate Installation
I cloned my old 100GB HDD onto a 500GB HDD to increase space however after doing so I am unable to update windows, turn windows defender on, or install any Microsoft Products. I am even unable to install WindowsActivationUpdate or Microsoft Security Essentials.
I have tried many FixIt tools to no avail.
I have run SFC /SCANNOW
I have run CHKDSK
I am stumped.
****RESOLUTION****
After doing some digging I found the solution. Since I had cloned the drive, the old AHCI driver wasn't updating Windows with the correct sector size. Updating the AHCI driver with the latest from Intel solved all the issues I was having.
**Note**
Install the Lenovo Driver First -- Reboot
Lenovo Driver: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001676
Install the AHCI Driver Manually (iaAHCI.inf - Do this in Device Manager) -- Reboot
Intel AHCI RST Driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=20110
***DO NOT INSTALL RST GUI IT WILL REMOVE TURBO MEMORY DRIVERS!!!***
Windows Update = Working
Windows Defender = Updating
Windows Installations = Working

But it still says Windows 7 Activation was Successful.I only discovered this problem a month after replacing my system HDD with an ssd Drive for a Vista sp2 Dell studio 1735 . But in my case all drivers were up to date. However this post triggered the right path to a solution. Though it is more
a workaround ... . Perhaps this will help others, an even more perhaps bring a microsoft engineer to make a small adaption to the vista windows update tool ....
So the problem seems that Windows Update checks for its datastore if the file is alined with the HDD underneath. But it seems that this check fails for an ssd with a 4K sector size.
Lucky I had another HDD in my laptop, which is required for this work around to work :-(. So the following shows the problem (and I think Windows Update does an alike test).
cd \windows\SDold\DataStore (so use cd \windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore if you didn't try the "ren" action yet as mentioned in many posts)
esentutl /g DataStore.edb -> (result) Operation terminated with error -583 (JET_errSectorSizeNotSupported, The physical sector size reported by the disk subsystem, is unsupported by ESE for a specific file type.) after 0.15 seconds.
cd D:\ (to a 512 byte sectored HDD )
esentutl /g C:\Windows\SDold\DataStore\DataStore.edb -> (succeeds! normal verification output)
So I tried (the junction tool can be downloaded from sysinternals):
net stop cryptsvc
net stop wuauserv
robocopy /mir C:\Windows\SDold\DataStore D:\DataStore
robocopy /mir C:\Windows\system32\catroot2 D:\catroot2 (I now think this is not needed, but I started with an Technet post (and many others ...) that put me on the esentutl track... , which is also why the "net stop cryptsvc" is present.)
C:
cd ..\SoftwareDistribution
rmdir /s /q DataStore
junction DataStore D:\DataStore
cd ..\system32 ( again not sure if needed, also counts for the next 2 commands).
rmdir /s /q catroot2
junction catroot2 D:\catroot2
net start cryptsvc
net start wuauserv
And windows update worked again ! Check the C:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log
Of course this is just a workaround, but perhaps this puts another searcher on the right track. And perhaps it makes a Microsoft engineer update the responsible code ... as to be aligned on disk does not seem crucial for the databases used for this "application"
Sorry had to remove links for sysinternals and cc734083(v=ws.10).aspx (esentutl, which is a vista specific command) both Microsoft links, as Microsoft has not yet verified my account ... -
I work for User Testing, which uses a Java-based screen recorder to make videos of people using commercial websites and offering spoken feedback on the site. Since installing the Java 1.6.0_33 update for Snow Leopard on my MacBook, the User Testing screen recorder does not recognize that Java is installed, and won't work.
If I switch to Chrome, all works smoothly. I have the latest version of Firefox, and have installed the latest updates. I have opened Java Preferences in my Utilities, and made sure that the checkbox "Enable applet plug-in and Web Start applications" is checked. I have cleared the cache and cookies in Firefox. The problem still persists.
User Testing says no other Mac users have reported the problem, and so they cannot help me. I rely on a Firefox add-on that is not available for Chrome to notify me of new User Testing jobs (which are normally claimed in seconds), so it is not practical for me to simply switch to Chrome or another browser.
Interestingly, when checking my plugins in order to fill out the information required below in this help request, I was sent to a Firefox page that says "For your safety, Firefox has disabled your outdated version of Java. Please upgrade to the latest version."
When I click the link, it says that Apple supplies its own version of Java, which of course I have already installed. Guess this is the root of the problem, but how do I fix it?
EDITED TO ADD SOLUTION:
After even more Googling, I eventually stumbled on the solution. In the Firefox menu, I chose Help>Troubleshooting Information, and clicked "Show in Finder" under Application Basics. I then quit Firefox, clicked on the Profile folder, deleted the file "pluginreg.dat", and restarted Firefox. Java now shows up among my plugins, and is enabled by default. The failure of pluginreg.dat to update automatically was supposed to be an old Firefox problem that has been solved, but apparently that is not always the case.
Thank you to everyone who answered.I read somwhere that firefox disables certain versions of java because it might give control of your computer to other malicious websites
I think you have to go to the java website and down load the version you need and enable it in firefox's prefrences
Sorry I may be a veteran in using firefox, but I know very little since I hardly had problems with mozilla untill just very recently hope this helps -
IPhone 2.0 Update let down on original iPhone!!!
APPLE, YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!! HAS ANYONE NOT NOTICED THAT THE SPEAKER VOLUME FOR YOUR IPOD ON THE ORIGINAL IPHONE HAS GOTTEN MUCH MUCH LOWER?
I NOW HAVE TO PUT MY EAR UP TO IT TO LISTEN TO THE SONG! WOW, IT IS SOOOO LOW?
AM I ALONE? SO ANNOYING!!!Sad news. This happened to me long ago when I upgraded from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4 .. the volume just disappeared. I took it to the Apple store where the Genius said he'd never seen that happen before. He spent about 3 minutes testing the phone then ..
gave me a brand new one. He said that somehow the update had affected the volume somehow, he didn't know.
All that to say, after that experience I was leary about upgrading to 2.0 but I did it yesterday and wouldn't you know it .. I can barely hear the ipod or anything again. Apparently this is a rare condition that happens to only a small group of iPhone owners. My warranty expires in August so I'm scheduling an appointment at our Apple store. Hopefully they'll give me a 3G phone. I imagine that's what they'd have to give me if they don't sell the old ones anymore. I suggest that you make an appointment at your Apple store too. Take the phone in, let them listen to the volume .. perhaps this is all good news if we get brand new 3G phones for free. -
[SOLVED]Pacman update fails
Hi,
Yesterday everything was working great but today it isn't anymore.
The problem
I did
pacman -Syu
Output:
sudo pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
core is up to date
extra is up to date
community is up to date
archlinuxfr is up to date
:: The following packages should be upgraded first :
pacman
:: Do you want to cancel the current operation
:: and upgrade these packages now? [Y/n]
So i choose Y and i get this:
resolving dependencies...
looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: package-query: requires pacman<3.5
:: pacman-color: requires pacman=3.4.3
What does this mean and how can I solve this?
As described here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=907659
I removed yaourt but this didn't solve the problem
Thanks in advance!
Last edited by tgoossens (2011-03-24 12:11:46)I had this same problem, and I went through the instructions as posted, but it must have removed pacman in the process. Now, I cannot update anything. I went through the stickied topic on pacman but it didn't work. I found some instructions on downloading pacman and installing it manually, but now every time I run the pacman command I get:
pacman: error while loading shared libraries: libalpm.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I googled that and none of those instructions work for me. Is there a way I can save my system?
Edit: And now my laptop has the same error preventing me from updating Pacman, what should I do to resolve that one? I would think that something in the repositories needs to be fixed and this is probably a bug, considering the home page doesn't say anything about it.
Edit 2: I did the following
sudo mv /usr/lib/liblzma.so /usr/lib/liblzma.so.0
And now pacman works, but it cannot find a single mirror that I have set up, it says "error retrieving file" on everything.
Edit 3: Nevermind, I give up. I'm going to wipe and reformat my computer. This is RIDICULOUS. I hope the same problem doesn't happen to my laptop, what is the *official* way to fix the "package-query: requires pacman<3.5" problem?

[SOLVED] WINE 1.3.27 segfaults
I had a nice working setup of Steam and some steam games (civ4 and team fortress 2 mainly), used last about a week ago.
After pulling up wine 1.3.27 with the usual upgrades, wine now keeps on segfaulting:
kjozsa@walrus:~/.wine/drive_c/Steam$ wine Steam.exe
fixme:process:SetProcessShutdownParameters (00000100, 00000000): partial stub.
Segmentation fault
I've moved away my ~/.wine and did a fresh install of Steam with the exact same results, not even the Steam window can be brought up (notepad and explore.exe works correctly though). Any ideas what could go wrong or how to get more details about the problem?
Edit: a clean install of steam using winetricks gives the same segfaults too
Edit2: I'm using the multilib wine package on arch64
Edit3: appearently the problem may or may not be related to the wine update itself but was clearly caused by the upgrade of the latest nvidia-beta package. With the beta package 280.13.1 was working, 285.03-1 caused the segfaults and now rolling back to the stable 285.03 is working again.
Last edited by kjozsa (2011-09-02 05:56:36)Have you tried uninstalling the new version of wine and installing the older one that actually worked? I've installed wine-dib from AUR and that works without issues as long as I don't enable WINEDIB. The major difference is that is wine 1.3.11 instead of 1.3.27.

You see the stripes?
I use arch in x64 system with a xpress 200m card (using the open source drivers).
Someone have in cache the old version?
Thanks!

[SOLVED]Compiling kernel fails with segfault
Hi guys,
I'm out of answers.
The situation :
Compiling kernel randomly stops with : "segmentation fault" and never runs through.
Reissuing make will make it continue until it will fail at some other point.
Background:
The system feels completely unstable to say the least, but nothing 100 % reproduceable ( vuze(java) crash, firefox/chromuim flash sites crash every 120 seconds, X crashes once a day , for instance when moving tvtime around, kernel oops daily, sometimes hard lockups, logs of yesterdays oops : http://pastie.org/private/imrqdzdbejdb3jxn4czuw )
But only the kernel compile is 100 % reproduceable so this must be fixed asap.
Specs:
intel e8400,nvidia gtx260, 2 G ddr2,Gigabyte EP45-UD3R, "gigs of space", off. arch kernel 2.6.33-ARCH , x86_64, "bigtime" cooling :
cpu temps 50 C° max during compiling
What configs/packages are important ? I got paranoid and ditched my old makgepkg.conf and used a newer *.pacnew file , I used to have :MAKEFLAGS="-j3" but not in this config :
http://pastie.org/private/4ryshivi2hgyqenjlkicg
local packages:
local/gcc 4.5.0-1 (base-devel)
The GNU Compiler Collection
local/gcc-libs 4.5.0-1 (base)
Runtime libraries shipped by GCC for C and C++ languages
Anything else updated daily.
The blowup:
http://pastie.org/private/hoamev0sli7zapbr0xvpbq
What I tried:
fsck -f: it fixed two inodes, but still the same behavior
badblocks -nvs : three hours of badblock testing, 0 hits
memtest : two passed runs, no errors
stress from AUR, 15 minutes :
stress --cpu 8 --io 4 --vm 2 --vm-bytes 128M --timeout 15m
stress: info: [26841] dispatching hogs: 8 cpu, 4 io, 2 vm, 0 hdd
stress: info: [26841] successful run completed in 900s
Max coretemp was 52 C° during stress.
The usual footnote statement ^_^ :
On w7 _everything_ runs stable.
And not only stable , I'm able to OC this box to 4.5 GHz and game under w7 without a prop for hours, well this is what it was build for at some point.
Conclusion:
So I'd say hardware wise this box kicks ass and now software wise my Arch kicks me in the a**.
I doubt there is a faulty hardware part, but what else could it be ?
Last edited by tuxfusion (2010-05-17 22:48:06)Update:
Trying to compile another big package just to have another result, gcc itself now :
- segfault after 4 m18 s
- segfault after 5 m50 s
Update²:
I think I found a faulty BIOS setting in my non-OC profile concerning DRAM termination, which said "normal" where "auto" would be correct.
My OC-profile has this setting correct and since I run this profile in Arch only it might explain that w7 did not fail.
Still have to verify this but i makes perfect sense, only gcc seems to trigger this. Compiling gcc still running with over 10 minutes in the game now.
After hitting 4.5 GHz with OC I must have reset the non OC-profile wrong.
*slams head on desk*
