[SOLVED] Encrypted install without LVM

I always installed my encrypted systems without LVM, on Debian, Ubuntu and openSUSE. Basically my partition scheme is:
/boot
/swap
/home
I've been trying to run the system for 2 days without success.
After install+reboot, a password is asked for the "main" disk (configured on /etc/default/grub) and then everything hangs. I press Ctrl+C then after being asked for the root password (and typing it) I can log in and manually mount the other partitions, but no DE can load.
I'll put my install scheme so you can understand better, and, if requested, I can upload my conf files such as grub, mkinitcpio etc.
Install process:
# loadkeys br-abnt2
# modprobe dm-crypt
# cfdisk
After creating all partitions:
# cryptsetup -c twofish-xts-plain64 -y -s 512 luksFormat /dev/sdaX
# cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdaX cr_sdaX
# mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/cr_sdaX
# mkswap /dev/mapper/cr_sda3
# swapon /dev/mapper/cr_sda3
# mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1
# mount /dev/mapper/cr_sda2 /mnt
# mkdir /mnt/boot
# mkdir /mnt/home
# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot
# mount /dev/mapper/cr_sda4 /mnt/home
# nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
# pacstrap /mnt base base-devel
# genfstab -L -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
# arch-chroot /mnt
# nano /etc/locale.gen (same locales as the 1st time)
# locale-gen
# nano /etc/locale.conf
# nano /etc/vconsole.conf (KEYMAP=br-abnt2)
# ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/Brazil/East /etc/localtime
# mkinitcpio -p linux
# nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
Now I edit '/etc/mkinitcpio.conf' and add 'keymap' and 'encrypt' to the HOOKS line, right before 'filesystems' and then rebuild the image.
# echo junior > /etc/hostname
# passwd
# pacman -S grub
# grub-install /dev/sda
Now, in '/etc/default/grub' I edit the line 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=”"' to 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=”cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:main”' then I run:
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
#exit
#umount -R /mnt
#reboot
Now, after install, the system asks me for the /dev/sda2 password, it says it's clean, than hangs. I press Ctrl+C, it says I can continue/rescue/etc, I type my root password and then mount the other partitions.
Funny thing is that it can't mount /home and after I mount it manually it tries to continue to boot, but hangs again. Then again I press Ctrl+C and I log in as root. I also isntalled xorg/nvidia/xfce to see if it loads after manually mounting the partitions but no success, I have to start it manually.
So, if any of you successfuly installed Arch with an encrypted FS w/o a LVM = PLEASE!! HELP!
Regards.

mr.MikyMaus wrote:Do you have "root=/dev/mapper/cr_sda2" set as a kernel boot parameter?
Yes, although I think the ro option should be changed to rw:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:cryptroot root=/dev/mapper/cryptroot ro"
I got to the point where it asks me for the / password and then for /home too, but it hangs there, home is not being mounted nor swap. I'm on the system now but as root and with xfce.
For some reason I can't upload my files so I post them here.

  • [SOLVED] Encrypt-Hook with LVM-on-Crypt fails to encrypt root part...

    Hi,
I think that since the mkinitcpio (0.14.0-1) update (and the regeneration of the initramfs for my kernel) the encrypt hook doesn't work anymore. (At least for me)
I have my root filesystem in a LVM, which physical volume is encrypted with luks.
Here are my hooks from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block keyboard keymap encrypt lvm2 resume filesystems fsck shutdown"
Output when I let it generate the initramfs:
    % mkinitcpio -p linux
==> Building image from preset: /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset: 'default'
    -> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux.img

But I am able to mount in manually within the emergency shell by executing:
    $ cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda3 system
    Enter passphrase for /dev/sda3:
    $ lvm vgscan
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Found volume group "vg_system" using metadata type lvm2
    $ lvm vgchange -ay
3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_system" now active
    $ exit

    Thanks for the link.

ok, I found a temporary workaround that seems to work for me,
I edited the file /usr/lib/initcpio/hooks/lvm2 to add this:
    run_hook() {
    lvm pvscan --cache --activate ay
Now, this will activate all lvm volumes regardless of lvm.conf, but it suits my needs for now.
This solution didn't work for me.
On boot time I was not asked to enter a password for the encrypted partition.
That's the reason I thought it was the encryption hook.

  • I duplicated a picture and now iPhoto (11) is cloning that picture replacing all the other photos and only when I click directly on them I can see the real picture! How can I solve the problem without losing any saved picture? Shall I re-install? Thanx

I duplicated a picture selecting CMD and D but, suddenly, iPhoto (latest version '11) started cloning that picture and replacing all the other photos with it.
Only when I click directly on one photo I can open it and see the real picture it is.
But the preview is always the duplicated one...
I tryed to duplicate another picture just to see if it turned out ok but the only changement was the duplicated picture!
I started repeating the second duplicated one instead of the previous one but my issue remained the same.
So, how can you help me to solve this problem without losing any saved picture?
    Shall I re-install iPhoto completely?
Thank you very very much in advance!!

As Larry says, restoring the back up is the fastest and best solution. Otherwise:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Encrypt initrd hook: resume support without LVM

Arch supports resume from encrypted volumes, but only if you encrypt everything in a LVM volume and use it for both the system and the swap.
Personally I do not like LVM that much, and in general it's a layer of complexity that should not be required for encryption..
So I modified a little the "encrypt" hook, and added support for resume.
The needed kernel options are the same as for the "encrypt" and "resume" hooks. no modification needed there.
For the swap partition you specify the encrypted partition or encrypted UUID, the script handles the rest.
    basically it adds this checks:
if a luks swap partition is found, then decrypt, update "resume=" variables and try to resume.
if the swap partition is not encrypted it tries to resume anyway.
tries to use the same keyfile for both root filesystem and swap.
if keyfile fails, revert to password.
tries to use the same password for both swap and root filesystem. If it fails it asks for another password.
The only thing left to test is the tuxonice resume from file feature, which should work, but I haven't tested it yet, and I need some help there 'cause there might be a problem, like opening twice the encrypted partition or something like that.
You can find the modified hook (I call it "encrypt_resume") here:http://pastebin.com/mShQU7JD
If you don't want to substitute your "encrypt" hook remember to copy the encrypt install script.
    # cp /usr/lib/initcpio/install/encrypt /usr/lib/initcpio/install/encrypt_resume

  • [Solved] pacman see's a tarball that I installed without pacman??

Okay, before the "you need to use pacman for that" comments begin, I've aparently been doing things the hard way.  I finally read up on the ABS.  Been putting it off because I thought it was only for making new packages to add to the database.  If it isn't in pacman, then I went straight to the AUR.  Couldn't find it there, I haven't installed it yet, until yesterday, when I took a tarball that I had for TeamViewer7, unpacked it, and ran it outside of pacman.
Well, I've got a better grasp on ABS now, so I've already taken the liberty of clubbing myself on the head.  But, funny thing.  I typed pacman -Qm and to my surprise, there sits TeamViewer7.  So.... pacman saw my install without running pacman??  I suppose it's possible that I tried to install through pacman with an AUR package but it was giving me problems so I scrapped it and installed my tar file.  Just curious why it's showing up on pacman.

Found it, thanks everyone.  I didn't think to use the query tool, still kind of new to pacman.  I dug through the man page real quick to find the info that I needed:

  • [SOLVED] Encryption hook doesn't prompt for key

Everything installs pretty smoothly until it tries to decrypt the root partition, it doesn't prompt for the passphrase. It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know the  size and RAM installed.

What OS will your Garmin work with? Funny there was someone else that did that and upgraded to Yosemite and regretted it.
I'd say Lion if your Garmin is compatible.
Both Lion and Mountain Lion are downloadable from the Apple Store:

  • System encryption :: Luks on lvm or Lvm on Luks?

    Hello,
I was reading up about lvm and luks and decided I want to encrypt my system. Until now I have been using truecrypt to encrypt a data partition which get mounted during boot. I recently bought myself a netbook and since then I've been pondering how to make the most use of HD space and keeping it secure should it get stolen.
I have 3 Harddrives in my tower. One of the HDs is my backup drive. The other two are for OSs. What I would like to do is
    1) Create an encrypted volume group on HD 1 (has about 650 Gb).
    2) Create 2 LVs for /root /home on HD1
    3) Rsync /root and /home to the LVs  HD2 -> HD1
    4)  HD2 secure erase
    5) create VG on HD2 and add it to VG on HD1
    *** My Question ***
While reading up on lvm and luks I came upon this article and I'm not quite sure which one is better suited for my situation. I don't know how easy it is to grow/add to an encrypted vg or lg.
There are two ways of setting up an encrypted disk using LVM:
    1. Create the LVM and encrypt every volume separately
    2. Set up LVM on top of an encrypted partition

Update : Using badblocks on /dev/sda4 didn't work as intended. It completely wiped /dev/sda.  One way of going Windows free.
Luckily enough windows 7 was still able to boot without a partition table (scratches head), so I was able to copy some saved games and the downloads folder.

AFAIK you cannot resize luks/dm_crypt devices, so you lose a lot of the flexibility if you put luks on top. of lvm.
personally i do full disk encryption with luks/dm_crypt, then lvm on top of that.
btw the arch installer supports both scenarios out of the box.
Sounds like what I'm doing right now. I encrypted my first HD then added lvm on top of that. It took a little while to get a seperate boot working and chroot to get all the files setup how I want. At the moment I'm randomizing a 2 Tb harddrive 10 hours 85%. Once it finishes encrypt the drive and add lvm on top. I'm not quite sure if I can grow my /home with the space from the 2nd drive and how to decrypt it during boot

  • I have deleted all my videos songs and photos from my iphone 4 but when i connect to itunes it still shows 17gb free. how can I solve this issue without restore. Total storage of my iphone is 32 gb.

I don't see an issue, but if you mean why didn't you get most of your memory back you need to see what else is using storage. Go to Settings/General/Usage. Wait a bit for it to calculate storage allocation, then when it finishes you can see how much storage each app uses.

  • How to do a clean install without loosing anything

    Hi all,
I (foolishly) installed Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard as an update to my existing 10.5.8 Leopard install last year. Ever since I've had a host of small but annoying problems, that no one else seems to be complaining about. (For example in the finder half the time when I right click on a file the pop-up menu disappears after half a second and I have to click and hold to keep it open so I can make a selection.)
I'm starting to wonder if some of the problems I'm having are caused by the upgrade install, instead of a fresh install.
So I'd like to do a clean install of the OS, but it's been so long since I've done that I've forgotten how that works. How can I do a clean install without loosing all my data? Do I have to pull all my data off the hard drive, wipe it clean and start from scratch like you do on a PC, or is there an easier way? (I hope there is an easier way.) If someone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

I'm starting to wonder if some of the problems I'm having are caused by the upgrade install, instead of a fresh install.
I did an upgrade install on my old MacBook Pro, and it worked just fine. The key is that the system has to be in good working order when the update is applied... if there are minor problems, those problems can be magnified by an upgrade.
Of course, this may not be your problem... have you checked all your software and hardware for compatibility with Snow Leopard? One site that you can use, though it's by no means comprehensive, is:
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
So I'd like to do a clean install of the OS, but it's been so long since I've done that I've forgotten how that works. How can I do a clean install without loosing all my data?
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do a true clean reinstall. In a nutshell, here's what you need to do:
    1) Back up all your data. Make sure you've got application serial numbers stored somewhere!
    2) Now back up all your data in another place. If you don't have two copies, you won't have any backups after the next step... the backup from step 1 becomes the original, and a poorly-timed drive failure would ruin you.
    3) Reboot from the Mac OS X install disk (SL disk in this case)
    4) Erase the hard drive with Disk Utility
    5) Install the system
    6) Update everything to the current version via Software Update
    7) Install any apps you need
    8) Update those apps if necessary
    9) Reconfigure anything that needs it (network settings, appearance preferences, etc)
    10) Copy +only documents+, no settings files, from your backup, preferably manually rather than with Migration Assistant (which can sometimes copy more than you might want it to).
That's about it! For assistance with any of those items, just say the word.

Do you have access to another Mac with a disk drive?  If so you can do it in one of two ways:
1 - on the Mac with the optical drive launch Disk Utility and make a disk image of the iLife 11 disk. Connect the two Macs together and transfer the disk image to your MacBook Air.  Mount the disk image and install from it.  I have my iLife disks saved that way for quick and easy reinstall when necessary.
2 - connect the two Mac together so you can access the MBA from the Mac with the disk drive. Insert the iLife disk, and install from the second Mac to the MBA.

  • Looking to run windows on my MBPro through Bootcamp or Parallels, but would like to use a downloaded Windows 7, is it possible to install without the Windows Disc?

Looking to run windows on my MBPro through Bootcamp or Parallels, but would like to use a downloaded Windows 7, is it possible to install without the Windows Disc?
Need to set up a workstation on my MBPro that will only run on Windows. Im willing to use Bootcamp or Parallels to see what works best. Need to get this set up this week to enable working from home on my MB - rural and hoping to buy Windows 7 online - am I able to get windows working through either bootcamp or Parallels without the actual Windows disc? Bootcamp set up guide calls for a disc.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, the answer to your question is yes, it IS possible to install Windows in Parallels without a disc, using an .iso image file.
Boot Camp since OS X 10.8 also installs Windows without a disc: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4889551?tstart=0
Parallels has complete documentation, series of forums, and a knowledgebase. You can also download the current release of Parallels 9 and try it for free for a few weeks before you decide to purchase it.
The Parallels Desktop for Mac product page: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/
The Desktop for Mac forums: http://forum.parallels.com/forumdisplay.php?58-Parallels-Desktop-for-Mac
    Documentation: http://www.parallels.com/support/desktop-virtualization/desktop/#c12970
The Knowledgebase for Desktop for Mac: http://kb.parallels.com
The primary difference between a Boot Camp installation and a Parallels installation is that in the Boot Camp installation, you're installing Windows into a separate partition on your internal mass storage device (hard drive or SSD) and then rebooting your Mac directly into Windows.
In Parallels, you're always running OS X on the Mac and Parallels is running a Windows virtual machine.
Not to get too technical here, but it is also possible for Parallels to run an installed Windows Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine. If you're evaluating system performance with a trial copy, that might be the way to go, because you only have to install Windows once on Boot Camp as a dual-boot system, then install Parallels Desktop and run the Boot Camp partition as the virtual machine.
There is a performance difference between the two, with the Boot Camp Windows installation being faster, but without the convenience of running both Mac and Windows applications simultaneously offered by Parallels. Sometimes that convenience outweighs a performance hit.
I can't give you more Mavericks and Parallels 9 specifics, because I'm currently running Windows 7 with Parallels 7 on OS X 10.8.5. Parallels 7 will not run on OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
I've been using Parallels (to run a few old rarely-used WIndows applications with features that would require a steep learning curve and major expense to purchase and learn a similar Mac app) occasionally since Parallels 3 and Windows XP. With each new release of OS X, each new release of Parallels, and each new Windows release, there are ALWAYS 'early adopter' bugs that get worked out over time.

Need to know your Mac model. If it's a PowerPC, the max OS is Leopard 10.5.x. If it's an Intel procesor, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (for $29) & later to Lion.
