[SOLVED]External HD: Auto-mount in read-only and only root can access
So I followed the advice in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 88#p583088 regarding using udev to auto-mount my external 60gb harddrive, and it works. The only problem is, it is being mounted read-only and I can only view the contents via sudo or as the superuser.
Can anyone guide me in the right direction I need to go to get this changed? I have already once tried to recursively chown everything on the harddrive, but that didn't seem to work. The syntax I used from that above article specifies "rw" as one of the options for the mount command, so I am stumped as to why this happened.

I have a strange issue with an external drive automatically mounted as read-only whenever I plug it to my laptop :
[sclarckone@archLaptop ~]$ mount
/dev/sdb1 on /run/media/sclarckone/dd type ntfs (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0177,dmask=077,nls=utf8,errors=continue,mft_zone_multiplier=1,uhelper=udisks2)
And I can't remount it as read-write :
[sclarckone@archLaptop ~]$ sudo mount -o remount,rw /dev/sdb1
mount: cannot remount /dev/sdb1 read-write, is write-protected
But of course, I'm able to mount it as read-write on other operating systems.
I have udisks and udisks2 installed on my system. I also belong to the storage group so I thought I could mount a filesystem as a normal user but I can't :
[sclarckone@archLaptop ~]$ mount /dev/sdb1 dd/
mount: only root can do that
I don't know whether it is relevant to this problem, but I have systemd and polkit installed as well... Does anybody has an idea of where the problem could come from ?

Stop external drive auto-mounting with utf8=1 option
The filenames on my external disk aren't showing up right. I've used and am using a typical GNOME setup, and this only started happening when I stopped upgrading for a long while, then went with a complete re-install.
A little experimenting showed that mounting it without the utf8=1 option fixed those filenames. Given the labyrinth of HAL, DBus, udev and DeviceKit, how do I stop my vfat external drive mounting with utf8=1?
There's more info over at the cross-posted thread in Desktop Environments, but I felt it would be more appropriate to ask here instead.I've "fixed" the issue by adding this line to /etc/fstab:
UUID=3BEC-9DA3 /media/WD\040Passport vfat rw,user,uid=1000,gid=100,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=0,noauto,flush 0 0
This stops the utf8=1 option being used when I hotplug my external disk.
However, GNOME now has a phantom "WD Passport" external drive icon. It never seems to point to anything, and whenever it's so much as selected, an error dialog appears saying that nothing is mounted there. Another, actual drive icon can access the disk, but the phantom icon is annoying.
Does anybody have a better way of setting mount options in this setup than using /etc/fstab?
If not, does anybody know how to get rid of the phantom drive icon? -
After updating to 10.1, projects/events that I had on an external HD are not recognizable by FCP, and only open up as TextEdit when I try to open them in Finder. I appreciate your help. Thank you.
You do not open the project from Finder. You do that from FCP. They are in the library.

Start by partitioning the drive as required for the Mac:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Now click on the Erase tab in the main menu, then select ExFAT from the Format Type dropdown menu. Click on the Erase button. This format is read/write on both the Mac and the PC. If you have a problem with it on the PC, then format the drive the same way using the Windows formatter. -
I've been using numbers for iPad and I accidentally deleted a column. And the auto-save feature saved that and now I can't undo it. Does iCloud storage have backups of saved files from like 10 minutes ago? I have numbers synced to iCloud.
I tried to undo it but the app crashed.
I am hoping there's like a previously saved version of my file in iCloud somewhere.No, iOS does not do short term incremental back ups to iCloud such as you get with Time Capsule.It backs up when you do soo manually, or if set properly, when the device is plugged in and connected to WiFi. It will not have saved your changes as of 10 minutes prior.

my time capsule says it only has 473.24 gb for my back up of 534gb. the only back up I can access when I enter the time machine was yesterdays so any idea what is happening? I have the latest irmware update.

I changed my itunes password only and now I can't update any of the apps I downloaded using the old password. I tried signing in with the old password with no luck. Can someone help please?
Have you signed out of your iTunes account on the device/computer that you are using and signed back in with the updated password ? That should 'refresh' the account on it, and you should be able to use the account's new password to download updates to its apps

How Do I find out what app is auto-mounting a network share and stop it?
I have a new laptop, the 13" rMBP. I installed Steam and wanted to use the network share on my server to store the game files. Everything went OK. I closed Steam, disconnected the share and shutdown my laptop. When I opened my laptop later on at work, it started to try and mount the network share.It keeps on going it. I removed the Steam app and all files related to Steam that I could find. I've looked at fstab, auto_home, auto_master and a large list of other files and directories and I *still* cannot find the offending file that's auto-mounting the share. It's really frustrating.
The share auto-mounts when I am home but not on the desktop or in finder. I find it by looking at /Volumes/ in terminal. If I mount the share manually under /Volumes/ it shows as Games-1 and mounts on the desktop under Games.
Does anyone have any ideas on where I should be looking to find the offending process/file/daemon?

Trevorthanks for the reply but are you sure about this? What difference would it make? Why 5 apps?
Even if it does work, which I doubt, at some point, I will have to resync ALL my apps again and surely the same thing will happen again, and I will be none the wiser. I still won't know which app it is. There must be a way of finding this out.
Any ideas?
What is really freaking me out is how it is connecting to my carrier (who is charging me) with Cellular data switched off.......?

Auto mount of USB sticks and hard drives?

I'd like ArchLinux to auto-mount USB sticks, hard drives, etc... when plugging them in. How do I manage to do this?
These are my daemons: DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond dbus hal ntpd alsa gdm)

Removable Devices. Whenever I mount it via KDE4.4's Auto-mounter. it
sets all files to be owned by root.

I know KDE does not mount anything, it asks HAL. nothing is in
/etc/fstab but in /etc/mtab and in /proc/mount I got

$ cat /proc/mounts
/dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4

I like all my files and folders to be owner by me and NOT by root.

The error looks like you have a different version of gcc-libs / glibc than the app was built against.

10.4.4 CD mount gone, but DVD and VLC work, can burn a disk, but won't show
Super drive seemed to work after 10.4.4 and iTunes upgrades for several days until yesterday when cds, either commercial, RW or burned in iTunes refuse to mount. DVD works fine, and I can burn CD's in iTunes, they just won't show up on this G5. Inserting a cd does not trigger itunes or CDDB lookup. Only thing that may be different is that I used a Lexar Jump Drive Secure recently to transfer some files. Seemed to stop working after that. I can access the drive through Toast and Disk Utility by the way, and inserting a DVD works just fine to launch DVD player. There is no change in drive preference settings that I can find.
Any suggestions? Haven't yet tried Archive and Install just in case there's something obvious with this upgrade. If the Lexar installs any drivers, I'm not sure how to uninstall them. Seems as though there could be an incompatibility there. This drive does install a password program that has worked in the past...
There were some issues shared by many Mac users when first going to Tiger with poor reads in the Superdrive...these seemed resolved up until now...
I use this G5 for audio editing for two radio shows, so I sure need to get the cd function back...

Dual G5 2.0 GHZ 2 GB Ram Mac OS X (10.4.4)Problem solved. Proven to be 10.4.4 upgrade. Attempted archive and install, but computer would not boot from CD (though Mac Install disk DID mount properly, but restart would not boot). Tried swapping to another DVD drive, same problems so NOT hardware, NOT firmware as suspected by Apple Care support.
But since DVD's appeared to mount properly, tried Mac DVD install disk...worked perfectly, and now Audio cd's mount fine with either DVD drive.
Will try upgrading again to see if problem is reproduced or if it was a corrupted initial install... -
I have an external network hard drive with a shared music folder (WD MyBookLive), which I can access from Home Sharing and play music on my Windows computers. On my new Mac, I can see the drive and the music in Home Sharing but the tracks will not play. All the other authorized computers in my home network show up in Home Sharing and I can play the content. What's the solution?
