[Solved] Failing to start dhcpcd@eth0 inside libvirt-lxc vm

What the subject says.
I was thinking that this could be some systemd 197 related problem. I've downgraded
to 196 and the problem remains. I have the latest version of all packages (linux, libvirt, etc.)
See the log below, please. Note that the there is a eth0 interface.

I'm trying to get this running without using systemd.
I restart the domain, and do
# ip link set eth0 up
# ip link show eth0
14: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP mode DEFAULT qlen 1000
link/ether 02:00:00:00:00:17 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
# dhcpcd eth0
dhcpcd[44]: version 5.6.4 starting
dhcpcd[44]: eth0: if_init: Read-only file system
dhcpcd[44]: eth0: interface not found or invalid
What does this mean? I googled for it, but didn'g find anything
In the guest, the only filesystem marked as read-only is /sys.
Any idea?

  • [SOLVED] Can't start dhcpcd service

    Hi,
    I installed arch freshly and for some reboots connecting to the internet worked. Somehow I managed to mess it up.
    I tried connecting to a openVPN network (which btw. failed) and when I came back to my other workplace, I could not connect to the internet.
    The ethernet device is up according to ip link. When typing systemctl start dhcpcd@enp8s0 it tells me:
    Failed to start [email protected]: The name org.freedesktop.PolicxKit1 was not provided bz any .service files
    Any hinters how I can restore the default settings I had after/during the installation? My openVPN connectivity problem is a whole other problem, but it would be nice if I could connect to the internet when a router is available...
    Thank you!

    Yes I did use sudo, but let me try as root too.
    So after login as root:
    #systemctl enable dhcpcd.service
    Created symlink from /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/dhcpcd.service to /usr/lib/sysstemd/system/dhcpcd.service.
    #ip link set enpd8s00 up
    enp8s0 <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    So this results in a working DHCP:
    ● dhcpcd.service - dhcpcd on all interfaces

    Oh, actually, systemctl status dhcpcd.service > text did output me something for enp8s0 and not just the wireless connections (which I ignore at this point). Let me reboot.
    So this is the newest log. Everything run as root right after reboot.

    To me, it seems like dhcp is running on ethernet now, but since I have no router at this place (only way to connect to the internet would be establishing a openVPN connection) these logs seem perfectly ok to me. The only thing bugging me right now, is that the wireless card is turned up by default.
    Am I correct with the assumption that connecting to a router should work now?

    Do you have any fglrx specific configuration? Do you have anything in your /etc/modprobe.d ?
    Could it be that fglrx is compiled for previous versions of kernel and this is a problem?
    I don't have any specific fglrx configuration and in /etc/modprobe.d/ I have a file called modprobe.conf that contains
    blacklist radeon
    fglrx
    I dont think fglrx was compiled for previous versions of the kernel because I used the kernel that the latest release contained. My kernel version is 3.16.3-1.

  • [SOLVED] failed to start kde, kdeinit4 depends on libpng15.so.15

    Hi,
    I made a minimal kde installation (kde-base). When trying to start kde with xinit, I got the following error:
    /usr/bin/kdeinit4: error while loading shared libraries: libpng15.so.15: cannot open shared object file: No such file of directory
    I check with:
    ldd /usr/bin/kdeinit4 | grep png
    which return:
    libpng15.so.15 => not found
    I update my packages with Pacman -Syu without any success
    The libpng15.so.15 seem to no longer exist (have been replaced by libpng16)
    I'm only using the official repos
    I'm a total newb. I made some research before posting but I'm out of any clues
    and sorry for the bad english...
    Thanks for any help

  • [SOLVED] dhcpcd@eth0.service failure

    I am trying to move from initscripts to systemd on a server I have no physical access to (luckily I do have a rescue system...).
    With only network left in DAEMONS, connectivity comes up just fine, and I see a "dhcpcd -q" process running in the background.
    However, removing that last initscripts daemon and using [email protected] fails.
    The server has eth0 only and a static IP.
    % sudo systemctl start [email protected]
    Job for [email protected] failed. See 'systemctl status [email protected]' and 'journalctl' for details.
    % systemctl status [email protected]
    [email protected] - dhcpcd on eth0
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]; enabled)
    Active: failed (Result: resources) since Tue, 16 Oct 2012 11:26:05 +0200; 44s ago

    Oct 16 11:26:05 cutie.skaaf.net systemd[1]: Failed to start dhcpcd on eth0.
    The relevant part of journalctl comes in two shapes, I'm not sure what that depends on.
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx systemd[1]: Starting dhcpcd on eth0...
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx dhcpcd[14105]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process

    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx systemd[1]: Failed to start dhcpcd on eth0.
    Oct 16 11:26:05 xxx systemd[1]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.
    and
    Oct 16 11:27:14 xxx systemd[1]: Starting dhcpcd on eth0...
    Oct 16 11:27:14 xxx dhcpcd[14145]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process

    Oct 16 11:27:14 xxx systemd[1]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.
    Now maybe this is trying to tell me that dhcpcd is already running? However the result is the same with "systemctl restart ...".
    Upon boot up with no network DAEMON but [email protected] enabled, I simply can't get in.
    I also tried editing /usr/lib/systemd/system/dhcpcd\@.service and making everything explicit in ExecStart, but I don't see any more useful output, and systemctl still claims the start failed.
    Running dhcpcd eth0 explicitly gives no error exit code:
    % sudo dhcpcd eth0
    dhcpcd[14347]: sending commands to master dhcpcd process
    Questions:
    - why does systemctl think the start failed?
    - can I find any more debugging info anywhere? Perhaps reboot with sytemd dhcpcd only and redirect journalctl logs to a text file that I can then view from the rescue system?
    - why does network DAEMON manage to start dhcpcd, while systemd fails?
    Thanks for any help or pointers in advance!

    Glad you got it working. I would go ahead and mark it as solved.
    nickray wrote:Is there a way to do the "systemctl enable" from a rescue system (by editing some file), as was
    possible before with /etc/rc.conf? Otherwise I would never have been able to solve this .
    When you do a systemctl enable, it shows you what it's doing, making a symlink. If you need to do it by hand, you just have to make the appropriate symlink in /etc/systemd/system to the service file in /usr/lib/systemd/system
    nickray wrote:Scimmia, any pointers to read more about the DHCD/DHCPCD issues?
    The place I usually start is Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhcp
    To put it simply, it lets a DHCP client (dhcpcd = dhcp client daemon) request networking information from a DHCP server. The server selects an IP from the pool of IP addresses that it has, and sends that information back to the client along with all the other needed network configuration info. The client automatically configures everything and you're up and running without having to do any manual configuration at all.

  • [SOLVED] Asus 1005PE ethernet | Atheros AR8132 | dhcpcd eth0:timed out

    Hello, this was solved through the following process BUT:
        pacman -Syu updated my system and kernel. After that update I needed
        to reverse the line that I changed before in rc.conf. I change it back to
        MODULes=() [removed !atl1c atl1e] which leads to atl1c being loaded
        autmoatically. Seems they fixed the problem in a update.
    These threads helped me:
    (   I )http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=78891
    (  II )http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-setup-n … aunty.html
    Current driver for AR8132:
    ( III )AR81Family-linux-v1.0.1.6.tar.gz http://partner.atheros.com/Drivers.aspx
    Hardware:
      Asus eeePC 1005PE with Atheros AR8132 ethernet device.
    uname -r:
      2.6.30-ARCH
    Problems:
      eth0 not showing up at ifconfig
      ethernet device not showing up at lspci
      at boot error ar "Start Network"
      dhcpcd: timed out
      ridiculous count of errors Tx, Rx ..
    Removing battery and power cord for a while and then booting without lan cable helped
    recognizing the ethernet device at lspci (and eth0 at ifconfig if I remeber right). Plugging
    the lan cable produced a high count of errors at Tx, Rx.
    (II)
    Get the driver (III) and get it ready(II):
    tar -xzvf AR81Family-linux-v1.0.1.6.tar.gz
    cd src
    make
    make install
    (the note about "#define IRQ_HANDLED 1" (II) wasn't necessary for me. My guess is they updated the driver and it is no longer necessary.)
    edit the /etc/rc.conf, prevent atl1c from loading, add atl1e:
    MODULES=(!atl1c atl1e)                                         [should look similar to this]
    reboot
    After reboot the error "dhcpcd: timed out" or "eth0: interface not found or invalid" was fixed,
    "ping -c 3 www.google.com" was successful.
    lsmod shows atl1e and ifconfig shows eth0.
    I hope this is useful to someone, it took me a while to figure it out.

    Hello,
    I installed Arch yesterday on my Asus 1005PE and am trying to get online since.
    Wired should be easier but there is a problem.
    I am connecting through a router with DHCP. While booting it fails after
    'Starting Network':   'dhcpcd: eth0: interface not found or invalid'
    Same error when I enter '/etc/rc.d/network restart'.

    This is already in my rc.conf:
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    MODULES=()
    USELVM="no"
    HOSTNAME="newton"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond)
    I don't see lines missing there.
    Unplugging the power cord and removing the battery for some minutes helped somehow (found that odd tip through google). I booted without the lan cable connected and the Atheros AR8132 / L1c was recognized.
    Got a new problem then. /etc/rc.d/network restart leads to:
    :: Stopping Network [DONE]
    :: Starting Network [BUSY]
    dhcpcd: timed out
    [FAIL]
    dhcpcd eth0 leads to:
    dhcpcd: version 5.0.6 starting
    dhcpcd: eth0: waiting for carrier
    dhcpcd: timed out
    Suprisingly the 1005HA has the same ethernet device and should be working out of the box..

  • [SOLVED] apache daemon fails to start on boot, but rc.d restart works?

    I installed apache from the official repos and followed the instructions in the wiki for configuring it. I checked to make sure the http user exists, and I /etc/hosts looks good (to me). Upon boot, the daemon fails to start and I can't load local web pages, but running "rc.d restart httpd" works just fine. Since I'd rather not start it manually every time I boot, is there a way to fix this? Also, httpd is the last daemon in my DAEMONS array.
    /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
    # This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
    # See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
    # In particular, see
    # <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
    # for a discussion of each configuration directive.
    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
    # what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/httpd/foo_log"
    # with ServerRoot set to "/etc/httpd" will be interpreted by the
    # server as "/etc/httpd//var/log/httpd/foo_log".
    # ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
    # configuration, error, and log files are kept.
    # Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
    # ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
    # at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple

    Per the wiki, I also tried commenting out the line that reads
    LoadModule unique_id_module modules/mod_unique_id.so
    Either way, it still fails on boot.

    The SIGTERM are from reboots, yes. I'm not absolutely sure that the process isn't running; I just know that I can't access http://localhost immediately upon reboot. I have to restart the httpd daemon, which works fine. How would I be able to tell if it's just hung?
    I checked everything.log, and I don't see anything that leaps off the page to me.

    All I notice is that my system's time is having a few problems, since you'll notice that events occur at 22:00 and change, then 17:00 and change, then back to 22:00 and change afterwards. Could this be the problem? I've had the CMOS batteries peg out on me suddenly in the last few weeks. I would hope this sytem is not also suffering a similar fate. Nothing else was happening on my system except for the standard processes from /etc/rc.conf and other standard ones, since I've just been rebooting, checking the logs, then posting here.

  • [solved]Network fails to start sometimes

    Hello!
    I'm having a problem with my network. Sometimes it fails to start. Usually, a reboot solves this. Here is the error log:
    [root@claudia log]# cat errors.log
    Aug 6 03:16:28 claudia dhcpcd[3194]: dhcpStart: interface eth0 is not Ethernet or 802.2 Token Ring
    rc.conf:
    # NETWORKING
    HOSTNAME="claudia"
    # Interfaces to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each interface then list in INTERFACES
    # - prefix an entry in INTERFACES with a ! to disable it
    # - no hyphens in your interface names - Bash doesn't like it
    # Note: to use DHCP, set your interface to be "dhcp" (eth0="dhcp")
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0)
    # Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each route then list in ROUTES
    # - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    hosts:
    [root@claudia log]# cat /etc/hosts
    # /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
    #<ip> <hostname> <hostname>
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost claudia
    # End of file
    What should I do to solve this?
    Thanks and regards,
    Gustavo

    I'd say it's because since the ethernet over firewire module is loaded too,   it's counted as a network device too - and which one gets to be eth0 depends if the NIC or ethernet over firewire module is loaded first. There are many solutions to this:
    1) If you don't need ethernet over firewire, keep it from being loaded by putting the module name (eth1394 I think) in MOD_BLACKLIST in /etc/rc.conf, like this:
    MOD_BLACKLIST=(eth1394)
    2) You can make both eth0 and eth1 (and perhaps other NICs too) start up together (I do this with my 2 NICs). To do that, make the rc.conf network section something like this:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo eth0 eth1)
    Then you should put a @ in front of "network" ( @network ) in the DAEMONS array unless you like waiting for a NIC that won't start

  • [SOLVED] SSHD fails to start

    Hi to everyone.
    his is my 1st post and the second day I have bee playng with arch linux. I installed everythig up to gnome and everything worked just fine. Nevertheless I'm a newbie and I didn't manage to have sshd working. I followed the wiki but it simply fails to start (either at boottime or from commandline)
    The error message is:
    :: Starting Secure Shell Deamon         [FAIL]
    What can I do ?
    Thanks in advance for any help

    I'm not sure why but it works ... and Yes the reason why I was getting "FAILED" when trying to start sshd is because it was already working on port 22.
    I didn't realized this earlier because I couldn't connect from another computer and I thought that was the reason while, in fact, was something else ...
    (for the sake of knowledge during setup my ethernet card was eth1 and after setup the kernel set it up as eth0 but boot-time scripts didn't complain therefore the sistem booted flawlessy with a eth1 apparently working. Changing in rc.conf from eth1 to eth0 solved the problem)
    By the way thanks for the guide and the nmap tip which will cam handy in the future.

  • DHCPCD fails to start automatically?

    I just reinstalled Arch on one of my machines (a hand built AMD APU based system on an FM2 ? motherboard). It has a Realtek ethernet card built into the motherboard. The ethernet card was recognized when booting from the USB install "disc", but when booting after the install the network card is recognized (I can see it as a Realtek card running using an r8169 kernel driver/module) by invoking
    lspci -v
    and it does show up in my dmesg file. Curiously it is named enp1s0 instead of eth0, but dhcpcd does not automatically try to query for an ip address. dhcpcd does actually work when I invoke it manually by
    dhcpcd enp1s
    I then get a working network connection.
    How do I make sure that dhcpcd runs on startup?

    Trilby wrote:Enable the service. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dhcpcd#Running
    Can you elaborate a little more? I did visit that wiki page but am still uncertain of how to proceed. BTW when I tried to start dhcpcd invoking it as "dhcpcd.service" it failed and reported an error but did work when I specifically named the network card with "dhcpcd enp1s".

    Hi bluebanana 66,
    Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
    There are a few reasons why you might receive this message after installing iTunes. You may need to verify that iTunes has been completely removed before trying to install again. See this article for the steps to completely remove and reinstall iTunes:

    I get the same error but my ServerRoot is ok. (/etc/httpd/)
    So I really have no clue aboout what to do.
    this is my .conf

    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
    # See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
    # In particular, see
    # <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>

    # Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding

    # consult the online docs. You have been warned.
    # Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
    # of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
    # server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
    # with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so 'log/access_log'
    # with ServerRoot set to '/www' will be interpreted by the
    # server as '/www/log/access_log', where as '/log/access_log' will be

  • Sickbeard fails to start. "Unable to write PID file" [Solved]

    I've installed sickbeard from the AUR but can't seem to get it started.
    when running "sudo systemctl start sickbeard.service" I get the following output:
    Job for sickbeard.service failed. See 'systemctl status sickbeard.service' and 'journalctl -xn' for details.
    'systemctl status sickbeard.service' provides:
    sickbeard.service - SickBeard daemon
          Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/sickbeard.service; disabled)

    Feb 23 14:49:19 arch systemd[1]: Failed to start SickBeard daemon.
    Feb 23 14:49:19 arch systemd[1]: Unit sickbeard.service entered failed state
    And it looks like 'journalctl -xn' provides about the same info:
    -- Logs begin at Tue 2013-01-08 17:25:44 CST, end at Sat 2013-02-23 14:53:29 CST. --
    Feb 23 14:49:19 arch sickbeard[11518]: Unable to write PID file: No such file or directory [2]

    -- Unit sickbeard.service has failed.
    -- The result is failed.
    Feb 23 14:49:19 arch systemd[1]: Unit sickbeard.service entered failed state
    Also, here is the current systemd file for sickbeard, if that helps:
    [Unit]
    Description=SickBeard daemon
    After=network.target
    [Service]
    EnvironmentFile=/etc/conf.d/sickbeard
    User=sickbeard
    Group=sickbeard
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/sickbeard --nolaunch --daemon --quiet --config "$SB_CONF" --datadir "$SB_DATA" --port "$SB_PORT" --pidfile=/run/sickbeard/sickbeard-8081.pid
    Type=forking
    TimeoutStopSec=20
    PIDFile=/run/sickbeard/sickbeard-8081.pid
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    So I guess obviously the important part is "Unable to write PID file: No such file or directory [2]", but I'm not really sure what that means or how to fix it. I've played around with the PIDfile configuration for the systemd service (tried renaming from sickbeard to sickbeard-8081) but I always get the same error.
    Any ideas?

    The sabnzbd systemd unit file doesn't use a pidfile. Not sure why. It would make more sense there than it does for sickbeard, because IMHO sickbeard should run as the user who owns the target tv-series media folders. Using tmpfiles.d just causes a headache when you are going to update it using the AUR package.
    I installed it once using sickbeard-git from AUR, changed the systemd unit file and /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/sickbeard.conf to match my user, chown -R'ed /opt/sickbeard, ran "pacman -R --dbonly sickbeard-git", and ever since use "git pull" to update. That also works directly from web interface.

    It's odd, because D-BUS will start but hal will not... Anybody have any suggestions?
    * UPDATE (10/08/08): Did a full system upgrade and removed dbus from daemons array in rc.conf. UDEV EVENTS Processing speed seems to be back to normal.
    ** SOLUTION UPDATE: After removing custom ntfs-3g fdi policies from /etc/hal/fdi/policy/, hal seems to load without any problems. This seems to be a bug, since my policies were working at one point, and I believe a hal update caused the problem. I'll see if I can track down the exact hal version that it breaks on, and submit a respective bug report for it.
    ** OFF-TOPIC UPDATE: Using hwdetect --modules to get a modules list, and using these modules in rc.conf with MOD_AUTOLOAD turned off (and also in mkinitcpio.conf and running mkinitcpio -g <path>), seems to have dramatically increased my "Load udev events" processing time. After doing this, my udev speed went from almost 4000ms to literally < 500ms.

    you have dbus starting before hal but hal starts debus by default so please try this...
    DAEMONS=(...@acpid @hal @alsa...)
    and delete debus from that line.
    Removed dbus from the daemons array and hal still won't start. Also, I noticed that the "Loading udev events" portion of the boot process seems to take a lot longer than it used to. Last boot, it took about 19130ms, whereas it used to take < 3000ms. Could these be related?
    Also, I ran a full system upgrade, both udev and hal were upgraded.
