[solved - faulty hardware]nvidia - serious problems after last update

I'm trying to fix this for 3 days now...
After last nvidia update i rebooted and my screen looked like this:
http://img3.imagebanana.com/img/qogzxehj/img_1702.jpg
So I googled a bit, tried to create a new xorg.conf with nvidia-xconfig, tried several things in xorg.conf but nothing worked. A downgrade to previous version failed. I was fed up with it and restored a backup from the week before and.....got also this messed up screen.
I even get some strange stripes/distortion in BIOS splash screen now or when I boot from a live-cd:
http://img3.imagebanana.com/img/29u0495s/img_1698.jpg
Next day I added a "Mode Section" to xorg.conf and everything seemed to work again - until the screen turned off because of inactivity (no suspend or hibernate), I moved the mouse and everything was f**** up again.
As things are now: I have this strange distortion in my BIOS-bootscreen. When X starts this messed up screen from the screenshot appears. I can switch to a console. If I switch to runlevel 3 and immediately back to runlevel 5 I get an apparently working desktop. But the windows don't redraw, the program windows won't refresh if I move them around. Everything looks strange and so on.
I played around with xorg.conf, loaded some Modules, tried several depths and resolutions, added a modeline, nothing. Reinstalled nvidia in runlevel 3, tried the nv-driver (brought up black screen with some red pixels, system only reacted on magic sysrequest..). Vesa driver works (resolution 800x600)...I also wanted to boot from 2 Knoppix CD's floating around here but they both came up with a black screen, at the other hand a Clonezilla live-cd is working (with 800x600 and 1024x768 and this distorted pixels, see second screenshot from above).
Is it possible that my VGA Bios is corrupted or something? I suppose this because of the distortion in the boot screen...A guy in the german archforum gave me the advice to look if
dmesg | grep -e mtrr -e MTRR
produces any output - it does not.

Ok, recently the exact same thing happen to me and my 6800.
These were the kernel's last words before everything froze hard. From everything.log,

Googling that, I stumbled upon this and I though jackpot!
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=123912
There seems to be a known problem all the way back to the start of 180.51 driver series. But the weird thing is the previous version(180.44) had no problems whatsoever.
Also, my logs never showed this other error they were clamouring about...
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.
[mi] mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping.
Adamant that a hardware failure at this point is too coincidental, I attempted first installing nvidia-beta and nvidia-utils-beta from aur as suggested by the post. Then, I tried downgrading the to the previous nvidia. Then, the previous kernel. The same thing keeps happening albeit with weird frequencies. There were times when it could last well over 5 hours, even on wesnoth. However, the thing that usually broke it is firefox loading with the usual 150+ tabs. This puzzled me even more. The graphic card isn't even related to this. Maybe its ram? Went on ram swapping spree again to no avail.
A couple of reboots later, weird graphical distortions appeared right after BIOS. Then it really hit upon me that this had to be a hardware problem! It was only when I fiddled desperately with the bios settings when I noticed that my Northbridge/chipset fan is spinning at 0rpm! Opened up the case and sure enough, its dead. I hacked and replaced it from my old AMD cpu's fan. Funny, my intel CPU fan just died a while back. Replaced it with the chasis fan. Can't be bothered to shop for these.....
Still, I booted up, thinking the bug will still be there since the chipset supposedly has nothing to do with graphics problem. To my surprise, it's totally gone! Elated yet puzzled, I sought out trying to rationalize the whole event. Afterall, it's only through understanding these that one is able to troubleshoot effectively. A quick search on google on the northbridge yields the answer. In fact, the northbridge does have something to do with the graphic card. It acts as an interface for high speed devices. No wonder firefox caused it to crash too!
Lessons learnt
If the frequency of crashes seems too random, consider that it might be a hardware overheat failure. This can easily explain why "the next morning everything works fine".
If weird stuff happens outside of the OS, eg. while rebooting, it's most likely is a hardware failure.
should be a big coincidence if the card dies because of heat problems in the second I updated?
It really isn't such a big coincidence. This depends on the frequency of your updates. Most people update every week or even every few days.

These are user to user forums. If anyone knows the answer, they will give it.
You can always call Apple support which may charge a fee or you can patiently wait for an answer here, which is free.

  • My iPhone's iMovie, the clip sequence/audio/timing all off, a serious problem since last update

clip sequence and timing won't save at the desired position, having to go through the movie again and again re-timing it, just wont remain in place to produce desired imovie, worthless if nothing will set as you wish. An error after last update.

    Hi there,
I would suggest you do a reload of the software after a full backup, I would suggest you load using desktop manager and see if it gets back to normal. Also check if the settings have not changed especially for location/GPS services which can be demanding on power.

  • Dual screen problems after last updates

    Hello everyone,
it was long time since our Arch gave me some problems, but then now I'm fighting furiously with dual screen configuration with new gnome. Let me explain.
I upgraded the home PC that I hadn't update for months, so I updated more or less everything ... kernel, nvidia drivers, gnome, etc..
The PC has always been dual screen (no twin view, without xinerama), two screens (one on a LCD monitor and one on a TV) where I could run separate applications independent.
Now, after the update, when I launch any application in the second screen (the TV) it starts on the first (screen).
Obviously I have't made any changes to xorg.conf before and after the upgrade. I also tried to recreate one with the nvidia-tools but nothing ...
Can you help me? Someone had the same problem?
I post my xorg.conf, I hope that someone has a hint. I can no longer watching movies on TV and it is very annoying!

Writing the post a tried to install fluxbox, and then... all ok. In fluxbox all works fine. I think this is a problem related to the new gnome screen configurer.
I post an image of gnome screen configurer vs nvidia-tools.
Googling around I found that new gnome screen configuration (using xrandr) is not compatible with nvidia drivers. Could be this the source of the problem?
    Help please

    Hi,
Does your Mac go to the sleep status when you close the cover? If so, the remote session can be terminated due to time out and the time out value may be redesigned in the latest versions.
    Thanks.

    Thanks a lot
Just want to add that I had to edit grub at start up and add "single" at the end of the kernel line.
The reason is that switching to runlevel 3 didn't work for me.

  • Vim+gnome terminal+xfce - problem after last update

I use vim in the tabbed gnome terminal in the xfce4 desktop.
After todays update I have serious problem with editing file.
I see rendering artifacts, mixed syntax colors, I can fix it with redrawing vim screen or resizing terminal.
    Have you noticed something similiar?

Fixed with vte 0.16.4-2. vte was rendering uninitialized things on the screen, making random alienated things appearing in your terminal.

  • Reconnect problems after last updates

After installing the last updates the Microsoft Remote Desktop programm cannot reconnect anymore.
For example: i open a RDP connection. Close the cover of my MacBook Pro, wait 5 minutes an open it again. In the past the connection was re-established without any problem. After installing the last two updates the RDP session freezes and give a time-out.
When i close the failed session and open a new one. The connection works fine. Also when i close all sessions before i close the cover of my Macbook Pro, i can connect fine. On my older Macbook (without the updates) i still can reconnect (as before).
Maybe any setting i can change to fix this issue ?

  • Problems after last update of Director+Flash Assets

    Hi All
I posted a question a week or so back about major problems
with an existing project after I updgraded with the last update.
Aftre the update Flash buttons no longer fired events and runtime
errors ocurred when you created 2 sprites from the same cast member
    etc etc.
I took this up with Support and to my great surprise they
didn't seem to know anything about it. After a few days I I
    recieved the following reply:
You have basically updated to the new Flash Asset Xtra and
all Flash component V2 will not work any longer. I can confirm the
Flash asset Xtra for Flash 8 doesn't currently support Flash
components.Unfortunately I don't have any info if this will be
changed in the future as it looks it has been done on purpose.
I believe its best option is to replace all components with
standard buttons or if he has Flash he can create his own buttons
or movie clips in there and bring them into Director
This seems to suggest that they no longer support the Flash
components that are shipped with Director. Great huh?
I'd be interested to hear what you all think. I think it
stinks - well that's the polite version!

    reformated and all fine

  • Many problems after last update

Ok, I will tell my actions step by step, because this update and my Arch now = big mess.
I started the update (yaourt -Syu) in the end of January. Because my internet connection is not always working properly, I have to repeat this many times to start the actual update (after downloading ALL the packages). This time, I couldn' t download all the packages and then I went on my winter break. After I returned home, I continued update (1/2 Feb). Firstly I' ve done yaourt -Su to end this old update and then yaourt -Syu to download rest of the packages. And then I restarted my Arch...
What happened first was, that Entrance (I use e17 as my graphical environment) was not working. Using LiveCD (the consoles are not working - agetty is broken, but it had been broken long before this update) I changed it to GDM. Also not working. Then I switched to KDM from KDEmod. It worked. I couldn' t start E and in LXDE panel was broken. I started KDEmod and everything from Qt worked fine. But all GTK was broken, and I couldn' t start any NetworkManager client. And not only. I discovered, that many of programs need older version of libpng (libpng12.so.0) and some of them also libjpeg (libjpeg.so.7). I borrowed these files from my friend, who also have Arch, but hardly ever updates it and copied to /usr/lib. The programs started working. But soon, all KDE and stuff broke. I discovered, that newer versions of libraries are not detected. I switched to GDM. Now I am running GNOME. Qt(mod) is not working since it needs newer versions of libraries. And for more, none of my network interfaces is working. I tried to connect to wireless network and by cable and nothing of it worked (with NetworkManager). I can' t even connect with my loopback interface to eg. CUPS (I can' t print) or MPD (I can' t connect to server by MPD client)!!!
And now I need your help...
    What I want:
    1. WORKING NETWORK!
    2. Programs - how to make them use newer versions of libpng and libjpeg.
    3. Entrance - all I know is "Id "x" respawning too fast. Disabled for 5 minutes"
    4. Enlightenment - it' s not working anymore! How to get it to work?
If someone knows, I would need also help with consoles. I installed fbgetty (agetty is not in repo anymore) - how to configure it to make the consoles? Or how to get agetty to work? ("Id "c<number from 1 to 6>" respawning too fast. Disabled for 5 minutes" - all I know about consoles not working). I have changed them from /dev/vc/<number> to /dev/tty<number>. but it wasn' t working. And it isn' t now.
    Please help me!

I tried starting enlightenment_start from console, and here is the result:
    phitherek@phitherek-laptop ~ $ enlightenment_start

Can somebody help me with this. I have the latest packages from ftp.archlinux.org. I guess libecore is the problem...
EDIT: Maybe not. I made scripts, which logs output of enlightenment_start and enlightenment, linked them to KDM Enlightenment Session, logged out and tried to run e...

    Can someone help?
EDIT2: ok, I tried arche17 script and e works now quite fine (not including strange fonts in menu and modules, desktop problems like disability to move icons and double launch of programs after clicking a shortcut).
So, finally, after long time since update, my system is working more or less like before it (When I say system, I don' t mean Arch itself, but Arch with my favourite WM and my settings). I won' t update it for a longer time now, because I want it to work
    Thank you everybody who helped!

  • Volume problems after last update

I cannot control my volume at all. I see the volume is all the way up but I also see the restriction symbol as if theirs no speakers, but I can hear sound just very low.

If your using iTunes check the volume slider there.
Do the same for other App's and YouTube Videos.
Then if your volume levels are still low or off, reset your > NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Are headphones or speakers plugged into your headphone jack...? If so, try unplugging them and readjusting the volume.

  • Serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220.

Experiencing serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220 1TB. Mac Finder totally locked!
I had to format the External hard drive with a Windows PC (fat32), then format again with my IMac (mac Journal.) and hopefully restored data from time machine backup.
So far so good but system looks unstable. Some software were not able to write on the hard drive. Some strange things happens. With Mountain Lion never had an even minor issue.
I read many discussion regarding problems with WD, just wondering if anyone had the same problems with Lacie and if there is any tip to solve the
    problem.
    Many thanks.
    Marco

Thanks very much for your reply.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a solution because the article refers to whom have configured the drive with included software and drivers that came with the drive.
This is not my case, I never used any third party soft ...only OS X disk utility ...

  • N80 problems after last FW update

    I have the following phone:
    Type:RM-92 (N80-1)
    Code:0527480
    FW version:V 4.0707.0.7 (28-03-2007)
After upgrading to this firmware, I was faced with two rather irritating problems.
    1) I've made a backup of the phone. After upgrading the FW, I restored the backup. Now, when I power up the phone, it says "Installing" after it boots up. Then, after a couple of seconds it says "Untrusted software found on memory card, install manually blah-blah". I installed all but one of these "untrusted" files, but I cannot remove from the list one which I no longer need. Application manager is set to allow all aplications and never check certificates online. Question is how to remove this sis file which I no longer need and which is, probably, causing this to happen.
And a mental note to Nokia, if they ever bother to read this - don't try to make the phone smarter than it should be - if I say I want to allow installation of all software, do not bother me with "untrusted" stuff.
    2) a bigger problem is that service commands do not work. Tried entering them on the standby screen and from messaging/options, same thing happens. The phone says it's "requesting" the wanted data, but no reply from my service operator appears on the screen. It's not a probem with the operator, as other phones work correctly

Wow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum.  Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is.  Apple is not here.  It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off.
