[solved] fdisk alignment not sticking on /dev/sda1

Hey everyone.
There are several statements that SSDs should be properly aligned.
So i went ahead and aligned my Intel X25-M following this guide on the OCZ forums.
After partitioning the SSD with fdisk using proper alignment, i confirmed via 'fdisk -l' and 'fdisk -lu' that the alignment is correct.
My next step was installing Windows Vista X86_X64, where AS Benchmark again confirmed a proper alignment (128 K as suggested by Theodore Ts'o or 512 K, as suggested in the guide linked above, i tried both).
However, when i checked with fdisk again to confirm the alignment once more, the alignment for /dev/sda1 seems to have shifted. I also get the message, that partition 2 doesn't end on a cylinder boundary.
Right now, it should be 32 heads and 32 sectors per track to result in a 512 K alignment. But fdisk shows 255 heads and 63 sectors/track for /dev/sda1, which is, from what i understand, the standard used by linux. The other partitions seem to be just fine.
I've read that there might be an issue with partition 1 shifting but i also heard it could by avoided by starting partition 1 on cylinder 2 instead of cylinder 1. Unfortunately, that doesn't change anything for me.
Can anyone tell me what i did wrong?
Regards,
demian

You can avoid it by using /dev/sda1 for /boot or swap. You should still start /dev/sda1 in cylinder 2 though.
Also, remember to adjust the offset of all the logical partitions in expert mode. Otherwise they'd start sector 32 as you can see in the bottom code tags in my first post.
For example, here's my current installation:

  • [Solved] Alsa Config not sticking: Muted at reboot

    Hi everybody,
When I reboot, I have to manually unmute alsa each time.
I have tried alsamixer in the terminal and using M to unmute Master and PCM ( the only two I need).
Also the commands: (I used this before on Debian)
    amixer set Master 100% unmute
    amixer set PCM 100% unmute
I've Googled a bit as well as searching the forums,
Is there an "Arch Way" of editing the alsa.config file? or maybe something else i'm missing.
    Thanks

rson451 wrote:Add 'alsa' to your DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf.  This will store the current volume levels before shutting down and restore them at boot.
    Also, run

as root, after setting the volume to your desired levels..

  • No /dev/sda1 for flash drive w/custom kernel [solved]

I think I may have made an error selecting the right drivers for my kernel or something. When I put my flash drive in with the official arch kernel, /dev/sda1 is created. However, when I put my flash drive in with my custom kernel, it does not. The weird thing is when I do a tail /var/log/messages.log, it gives me this:

I tried adding it to the kernel, but it did not work. I think usb_hid is just for usb keyboards/mouses/etc.

  • Placing root filesystem on /dev/sda1/FOLDER [SOLVED]

Is it possible for me to place a root filesystem inside a folder on a partition?  If so, what would the menu.lst line look like to boot the thing?
    Example:
On /dev/sda1 I'd like to have:
    /archi686
    /arch_x86_64

Sounds like you want btrfs's subvolumes. This would be extremely awkward with any other filesystem and would require hacking on mkinitcpio.

Mods feel free to delete this thread. It's less than useless.
    It is now!
It was, but since there were responses to it I don't think it's useless anymore.
I just made a mistake, instead of
    dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/home/junior/boot bs=512 count=(size of partition)
    I did
    dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/junior/boot bs=512 count=(size of partition)
    which output the error
    No such file or directory
It was a pretty rookie mistake.

  • [SOLVED] "Superblock could not be read" error on install

I've been trying desperatly to install Arch Linux on my main computer but this error almost always shows up after 1 or two reboots (usually when I'm finished installing base system and about to install Xorg):
    :: Checking Filesystems
    /dev/sdc3:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternative superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
I installed Arch by following the install guide and choosing Auto-prepare partitioning where I chose EXT4 as FS for /home and / I believe, so Im guessing the filessytems are set-up properly.
I have no idea why this error keeps coming back reinstall after reinstall (with complete format of HD in each reinstall). First I thought the HD might have gone bad so I tried installing arch to another HD and the error still shows.
Sometimes if I reboot enough times the error doesn't show and sometimes it just doesn't go away, seems like it's kind of random.
The harddisk I am installing to is a 30GB IDE Maxtor harddisk (a couple of years old) and I also tried with a 40GB Seagate IDE harddisk both with no success. When I installed I had 2 other harddisks in my system; a 60GB OCZ agility SSD and a 640GB Wester Digital both on SATA channels, but they are unplugged now.
I'm really lost as what to do here, I love Arch Linux and have used it for some time on my laptop but I never had any kind of problems like this.
Here's output from 'fdisk -l' run from the "maintanence mode" I get into when the error shows "Give root password for maintenance".
I find it weird that Arch tells me the error is on "/dev/sdc3:" when my harddisk is /dev/sda (my other two harddisks are unplugged, but it shows the error both with and without them so I guess it doesnt matter):
    fdisk -l
Device        Boot    Start         End          Blocks                Id       System
    /dev/sda1      *        1             13            104422             83       Linux
    /dev/sda2               14            587          4610655            82      Linus swap /Solaris
    /dev/sda3              588           1544         7687102+         83      Linux
    /dev/sda4              1545         3738         17623305          83      Linux

How many hard drives you have installed at the moment?
Atm I have 3 HDs installed; my Arch HD, my OCZ agility and my Western Digital.

PirateJonno wrote:To find your UUID look in /dev/disk/by-uuid and use readlink to find the equivalent sdXX.

Thanks, I used blkid and set-up UUID in /etc/fstab and it seems to be working now.
Can anyone explain how come that the /dev/sdx assignments seems to be randomly distributed among my HDs on each reboot - is this normal? I tried using 'blkid' on a few reboots and noticed that the problem occured everytime the HD arch is installed on was NOT assigned to /dev/sdc, but when it was assigned to /dev/sdc (which was in fstab) it worked fine.
Isn't it weird that Arch seems to assign a different /dev/sdx number to each harddisk on reboots? I mean, if this is normal, why doesn't Arch use UUIDs by default? At first I thought the different /dev/sdx assignments was caused by changing boot order in the BIOS, but the assignments seem to change even when I don't enter the BIOS and just reboot without touching a thing - one reboot it works and one it doesn't (due to differnet /dev/sdx assignment to my Arch hd).
    EDIT:
I found the answer to my question on http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Per … ice_naming - Arch randomly assigns device nodes so it seems the UUID fix is the way to avoid unbootable systems.
Is it possible to make Arch use UUIDs in the install so I don't have to configure it manually afterwards? (Why doesn't it use UUIDs by default?)
    Thanks for the answers,
    John

  • [SOLVED] GRUB2 does not process hooks: System doesn't boot

My initial system was an SSD where /dev/sda1 was my boot partition and /dev/sda2 was an (encrypted) LVM containing home, root, var and swap. Since all partitions were ext3, I decided to do a clean format to ext4 and copy my data back on the partitions. First I archived everything but home with the arch live CD onto a server with:
    rsync -a /mnt/* root@server:/path/to/backupdir/
Everything went fine, but after copying back, the system would not boot (it was GRUB Legacy). Since it was not in the MBR but on sda1, I figured I could upgrade to GRUB2 now. So I followed the described procedure (from a live CD) and installed GRUB2 (this time into the MBR of sda. I then regenerated the image via mkinitcpio -p linux and generated a configuration file.
When I try to start the system, GRUB2 gets loaded, but after the two messages for loading the ramdisk it remains silent for some time (no output at all) until it finally complains it cannot find my root. But I did not see any output of any hook being processed (including encrypt) so of course it cannot find my root, since it is still encrypted.
I reformatted my boot partition again and reinstalled and regenerated everything again (I copied the directory contents from my backup but moved the old grub folder). Still the same issue. I know I could probably just reinstall everything and restore the settings, but I'd really prefer to restore my system, since this should be a lot faster.

Thank you for your reply. I looked further into the grub.cfg and removed the quiet part. Apparently the problem is that it runs all hooks but does not prompt me for a passphrase when running the encrypt hook. Why does this occur?
Edit: I solved this: apparently I forgot to specify a cryptdevice. Since the article about dm-crypt does not talk about GRUB2, I missed that. I will rework that section to specify GRUB2 and GRUB-Legacy

As you can see, pvcreate cannot find /dev/sda9.
If I look in /dev, there is no entry for /dev/sda9 (but sda1-sda8
    are there).
What do I need to do to create the /dev/sda9 entry?
    Thanks.

It turns out that rebooting "fixed" the problem. After rebooting pvcreate on /dev/sda9 worked.
Anyone know the name of the command/process which adds device special files to the /dev directory
    during boot?

  • [SOLVED]arch on usb stick, boot error

    Hi,
i would like to create a i686 rescue usb arch install.
after googling a lot ive tried to install arch on my usb stick and get it booting, what ive done:
My x2 is running arch64, so i started with:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch64_Install_bundled_32bit_system
Changed HOOKS in mkinitcpio.conf to(for usb support at boot):
HOOKS="base udev autodetect usb ide scsi sata filesystems"
    And regenerated the mkinit file:
    mkinitcpio -p kernel26
    Thx to MrElendig, #archlinux
Grub install: according to the "flash linux" install guide i used:
    grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/mnt/usbkey /dev/sda1
But now the system stops with:
kinit: Cannot open root device sda1 (8,1)
    kinit: init not found
    any ideas?
    greets
    metalfan

using the HOOK autodetect wasnt a great idea since i used another system for testing the stick, removed it and added usb instead.
Thats it, some minor modifications are needed. Will add the steps to the wiki somewhere below "usb booting".

  • [NOT SOLVED] Gnome will not start

I'm editing this original message by way of summing up so that anyone coming here with a similar problem will know what to expect if they read further:
I believe the reason Gnome would not start on the machine in question was that it made too many demands on the available hardware (see desm0te's comments below).
For this reason I decided to switch to LXDE as Desktop Environment which works well on the restricted hardware. I did not investigate the Gnome related problem any further.
    The original message follows:
After a successful installation of the basic command-line Arch according to the Beginner's Guide, I went on to install Gnome according to instructions in the Wiki.
I Did not want Gnome to start automatically but only when I type in the command startx.
This it does, but all I get is the nice blue "curtain" background - no black bar at top of screen with Actions, date , name etc...
    and no cursor.
One funny thing was - this afternoon while I was concentrating on another machine - the black bar suddenly appeared (apparently for no reason) showing the date and my name but with the X cursor
from the X11 environment. However as soon as I moved this cursor to the bar and clicked, both dursor and bar disappeared never to return .
I decided to redirect the stderr of startx to a file in the hope that it would give a clue as to what was wrong.

    desm0tes:
To take your points one by one:
    1. I am now quite happy with LXDE too. The problems I mentioned last night seem to have gone (???!!!) and I can just start LXDE from my user account. Maybe later, I'll realize what I was doing wrong or rather what I did to make it work... . Now I just type:
    startx
    having put:
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
    in .xinitrc.
    2. Thanks for the tip about yaourt. I shall try that sooner or later.
    3. Well as I said - I don't understand what I was doing wrong -  which makes me feel a bit stupid and is rather annoying but looking on the bright side it's fine to be able to start-up, have a legible screen and logout successfully - which I couln't do before. I now have to figure out how to expand the contents of LXDE a bit but that's the fun of it!
LXDE starts up nicely with minimal possibilties but I can change look & feel and customize the panel settings.
    "Menu" contains:
        Accessories:
            File Manager
            Image Viewer
            LXTerminal
            Leafpad
            Xarchiver
        Internet:
            Avahi SSH Server Browser
            Avahi VNC Server Browser
        Office:
            ePDFViewer
        System Tools:
            Avahi Zerconf Browser
            Task Manager
        Preferences:
            Customize Look and Feel
            Monitor Settings
            OPenbox Configuration Maanger
            Preferred Applications
        Run
        Logout
All of these start up OK and work, on cursory examination, except the Avahi Browsers which I don't understand and which appear to do nothing as no window appears on screen.
    4. I'm not quite sure I can yet see the use of a login manager such as SLiM, since I seem to get on quite nicely without it but since I've heard it mentioned a lot I'm sure I'm just missing the point.

  • How to add a code so my drag and drop movie clip will not stick  once it is dragged to final place o

Hello all and kglad, I have to use the old drag and drop code on my movie clips, but the problem is when I drag the movieclip to the area on my .swf file once i release it, it sticks to the hand mover.
I am encloseing the action script I am using could someone or kglad tell me what is missing from the code so that once it is released it will not stick, see code below
    circle.onPress = function(){
    startDrag(this);
    circle.onRelease = function(){
    stopDrag();
I am desparate for help on this must get project ready for this afternoon
    Seal55

there's nothing wrong with that code but it would be better to use:
    circle.onPress = function(){
    this.startDrag();
    circle.onRelease = function(){
    this.stopDrag();
but that won't solve your problem.  there must be something else going on like a depth issue.  you may need to use swapDepths() to bring your circle under the mouse when releasing.

  • Flash [?] drive not appearing in /dev/disk/by-uuid

I'm not sure if "flash drive" is the correct term or not ... the filesystem I want to mount is on a Sansa c240 MP3 player (a refurbished unit I bought last week), which connects via USB. Now, I *can* mount the drive, and have been able to all along, but I would like to add a line in /etc/fstab, using the device name from /dev/disk/by-uuid, so I can mount the thing conveniently under my regular username. But the device is not listed in /dev/disk/by-uuid (I've checked many times over the last couple of days).
That's not how it started, though. When I first brought the thing home and plugged it in, it did appear in /dev/disk-by-uuid. But I ran into some difficulties, and in the course of trying to make the player play nice with Linux, I formatted the drive once or twice using the player's internal command--still no problem as long as I did that. But then, following somebody's recommendation, I ran mkfs.vfat on the partition under Linux ... and that seems to have coincided with the device's disappearing from /dev/disk/by-uuid.
Now, I gather that USB flash drives and such don't always have UUIDs, but this one apparently does:
    # blkid /dev/sdc1
    /dev/sdc1: LABEL="Sansa c240" UUID="CC07-5165" TYPE="vfat"
And, as you can see, the partition is definitely visible, and I can mount it as /dev/sd*1, and copy files to it. It also has an entry under /dev/disk/by-id, just not under /dev/disk/by-uuid. Any ideas why that might be, or what I can do about it?
    TIA for any tips.

Sorry for the necrobumping..but I have the same problem on a headless server running the  2.6.31 kernel, and not just with  flashdrives  but any usb storage: I see the uuid with blkid, yet they don't show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid/ . I can mount them with /dev/sd[a-z][0-9] but I rather use uuids in my mount-scripts. Is there any solution other than making the symlinks in /dev/desk/by-uuid myself?
    <edit>
    solved it myself:
The cause was 'OPTIONS="last_rule"' that I added to some lines in a udev-rule file I made in /udev/rules.d/ for automounting usb drives based on the ones here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ude … SB_devices. After removing those parts both my udev rule gets executed and the links in /dev/disk/by-uuid are created when inserting a usb drive.
    </edit?

  • MAX settings do not stick

Hi - I'm trying to use FTDI drivers to simulate a COM port from an USB connection. Most WinXP SP2 or 3 machines have no problem, but I have one machine where having run MAX to ensure correct port operation, on quit and relaunch MAX shows a port conflict. This can be cleared with the available controls, but recurs the next time MAX is started. The settings do not stick. The subsystem (a TTi QL355TP power supply) does not see the communication either on this machine, and is OK on the others.
Environment: LV 8.2.1, MAX 4.1 or 4.2.1 . Would prefer not to upgrade LV to more recent version at this stage. LV 8.2.1 re-installed.
Any help or nudges much appreciated.

Thanks for reply. I can't obtain a screenshot at the moment, but the MAX display is a standard diagnostic I've seen on other occasions. Select a COM port in 'Configuration', and the "Port Settings' tab at the bottom has 'Conflict' added. The screen area above shows two columns of 'Settings', one from MS Windows, the other from MAX. These columns disagree in (for example) speed or flow control. Pressing 'Validate' aligns the two, 'conflict' disappears, 'Save' at top of screen appears to save correctly, and everything's fine. Except that the application this setting relies on still has a communication problem, and if you restart MAX the screen display resets to how I described above!
Re-install or repair of NI software does not fix it, nor does re-install of USB drivers. A corrupt data file on this machine would fit the observed evidence - are you able to point me to all the files that MAX may write? A corrupt MS Windows Registry entry might do it also, I guess. Do you know of any tools for checking or fixing such problems? The problem was triggered by a clumsy cleanup of installed NI software that was aborted partway through. The system is installed with a customer making a clean install of everything difficult and we are right at the point of having to write an unattractive workaround that uses a lower level serial interface to allow us to use NI Spy to eke out the required functionality.
    Any help appreciated.

I'm having trouble with port settings not sticking in mac mail.  When I start Mac Mail (v5.1, running in Lion) the program won't read mail in my iCloud account because the port settings are incorrect (port 143).  I click on the "Use SSL" box, which changes the port setting to 993.  I save the changes and everything works fine until I quit and restart the program.  The port settings revert to 143 and the SSL box is unchecked.  The issue, obviously, is that the changed settings are not being saved.  I deleted the iCloud IMAP account and reinstalled.  It reinstalled with the correct 993 SSL setting, but as soon as I quit the program and restarted, it reverted to 143, no SSL.  Anyone have an idea what is going on?

To solve the problem of mail port seetings not sticking required deleting the Accounts.plist in this mail directory:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist

  • [SOLVED] LVM volume not found while booting

I have an error while trying to boot with both Syslinux and GRUB (GRUB was my 1st choice but I got this error so switched to Syslinux). It's BIOS system, my boot is on /dev/sda1 and root is inside LVM on /dev/sda2. It states that device /dev/mapper/TheVG-RootLV can not be found so the problem is with LVM. There is lvm2 hook in mkinitcpio.conf, dolvm in my kernel line... what could I do wrong? I had no problem with this exact setup on my UEFI system and GRUB. Boot partition is loaded even if it's also inside LVM (that was the case when I was trying to run it via GRUB). GPT partition table.

This has been an ongoing issue with the Arch Linux LVM2 setup since it was changed to using lvmetad.  You did nothing wrong.  My home server still sits on an LVM, so what I did was downgraded lvm2 and device-mapper on that machine and have been ignoring the updates until I can find a better solution... though I haven't been looking very hard.
Also, with mkinitcpio, there is no "dolvm" command line parameter.  It runs the LVM2 stuff depending on whether or not you have the lvm hook in your mkinicpio.conf (or add it otherwise with the command line).  So yu can safely remove that.
The reason that Grub is able to read the /boot partition, but then it can still fail to find the rootfs is because these are two separate things.  Grub has its own system to give it LVM compatibility.  So it uses its stuff to read that, gets the information it needs, then loads the kernel and initramfs. It then passes the system off, at which point, this process of detecting the LVM and finding the rootfs happens all over again, albiet with the kernel and native linux userspace tools.
My laptop was on LVM2 when this change occurred.  It worked for a while, and then just totally borked... well not toally, but it was way inconsistent and super frusturating.  So I changed to btrfs.  There is a thread about luks and lvm2 not booting, but it is actually just about lvm2, as the luks part of it was just cioncidence.  You may want to ahve a look there because there is a slight change you can make in your lvm.conf that might help.  It helped in my case, but it only made it slightly less borked, which is why I eventually changed setups.
Edit: I remember the edit having something to do with a filter... or global filter... something about having it not scan floppies and cdroms and whatnot.
