[Solved] File "Save As" takes more than 20s before dialogue box opens

Whenever I use File "Save As" in any non-kde application (eg firefox, medit, kino), the dialogue box opens immediately but then takes more than 20 seconds to display the contents of the initial directory, after which I can then save the file. Alternative directories can then be selected instantly without problem. Starting File Save As again, causes the same long delay, so its not a caching issue. This occurs in XFCE4, LXDE & KDE.
KDE apps, however, list the contents virtually immediately, indicating that its not a disk or filing system problem.
The XFCE4 theme (under Appearance > Style) is Foresight, and the icon theme is Nuvola. Changing these does not make any apparent difference.
This is on a SATA drive with 84 GB free running Arch 64.
Can anyone suggest how this can be rectified?

Many thanks for that - problem solved.
The file contained 323 lines pointing to a single directory with multiple subdirectories, none of which was a removable device.
Moving the file to another location, resulted in the File Save As operation functioning properly.
Not sure if I actually use gtk-bookmarks as it hadn't been modified in over 6 months.
Anyway, thanks again - its made a big difference.

Hi,
From few days, it takes more than 30-60 minutes to open Firefox on my laptop. I am on Vista & have got Anti Virus as well. I have already tried to reset firefox, have uninstalled and installed it again. My firefox version is 29. But nothing seems to help.
Can you please help in this regard, as I really do love using Firefox, but due to this issue, I am forced to use other browsers.
Thanks
Gaurav

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/fix-problems-connecting-websites-after-updating
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

• At first launch of a fdf file, Windows installer takes more than 30 min

I updated my Acrobat 9 software. After that, I noticed that at the first launch of a .fdf file, the Windows intaller works for about 30 min (during which time I cannot do anything) before opening the file. After that, evryting seems normal. I have Acrobat 9 on several machines (University License) and this happens for each of them. I have instructed my co-workers to rename the .fdf files as .pdf to avoid this problem, and to only try to open theur first .fdf file when they know they have at least 30 min free... Why is it so ? This problem did not occur with previous versions of Acrobat.

Just for the heck of it, I renamed a FDF file to a PDF file and tried to open it, no go. I was able to import a FDF to the original PDF. The install option is a bit of an issue and I am not sure what to say to that. It may be looking for the PDF file on the hard drive and not actually be trying to install Acrobat. I opened a FDF in the same folder as the PDF and it opened right up. Otherwise, I think the location of the PDF has to be encoded in the FDF file. The form name is typically at the end of the FDF file (OPEN in notepad or such to look at the details of the FDF). You will not that it does not start as %PDF, but %FDF.
As I mentioned, Acrobat is likely looking for the original document listed at the end of the FDF file.

The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup... Restore as New...
Restart / Reset

Backing up, Updating and Restoring
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...

I used scripting brigde to add a movie that has size bigger than 5GB, exactly after two minutes iTunes return a failed, but the processing of the file is actually added to iTunes Library successfully. The copying take more than 5 minutes to complete. Why the iTunes Scripting Brigde returned failed when it is actually success? It occurred exactly 2 minutes after submit the request to Scripting Brigde. Is this 2 minutes related to the Apple Event time out? if it does, how do I get around this problem? thx

I can tell you that this is some of the absolutely worst customer service I have ever dealt with. I found out from a store employee that when they are really busy with calls, they have third party companies taking overflow calls. One of those companies is Xerox. What can a Xerox call center rep possibly be able to authorize on a Verizon account? I'm Sure there is a ton of misinformation out there due to this. They don't note the accounts properly or so everyone can see them. I have been transferred before and have asked if they work for Verizon or a third party also and was refused an answer so, apparently they aren't required to disclose that information. I spent a long time in the store on my last visit and it's not just customers that get the runaround. It happens to the store employees as well and it's beyond frustrating.

• Save an empty document in InDesign CC and Illustrator CC takes more than 3 min.

Save an empty document in InDesign CC and Illustrator CC takes more than 3 min.
The same if you open an empty document.
I monitored the application status using Activity Monitor and every time I saved a document the application didn't respond then, after about three minutes, comes back to life.
I'm working on a MacBook Pro, 2.6 Ghz, 8 Gb Ram with OS X 10.9.
Please let me know If someone else had the same issue because I use Adobe softwares not only for my personal job but also to show people how Adobe software works...
Thanks.
Andrea Spinazzola

Adobe Drive is the reason!
Please communicate this to everybody massively because I think is the reason why many Adobe CC users refer about bad performance.
I heard many issues related to this and no one talk about this.
Thanks Hank.

• My iMac 21.5 Inch takes more than 10 minutes to boot. How to solve??

I have just installed Mac OS X v10.6.7. The iMac just boot super slowly. It takes more than 10 minutes to become responsive...
How can i solve the problem???

This could be something as simple as a corrupted cache or as drastic as a failing hard drive, but try the less drastic first. Back up all your data and run Onyx 'automation'. You could empty all your caches manually, but Onyx will do it in one click. If Onyx doesn't resolve the start up issue you will have to start thinking about more drastic measures.

• QUERY TAKES MORE THAN 30 MINUTES AND IT'S CANCELED

Hi
I have one workbook and sometimes it takes more than 30 minutes to be executed, but Discoverer cancels it, Does anybody know how to alter this? I mean if the query takes more than 30 minutes i need it to be finished.
Any help will be appreciated.
Best Regards
Yuri López

Hi
You need to alter the timeout settings and these are located in multiple places.
Discoverer Plus / Viewer using this workflow:
1. Edit the pref.txt file on the server located here: $ORACLE_HOME\discoverer\util
2. Locate the preference called Timeout and change it to your desired value in seconds. The default is 1800 which means 30 minutes
3. Save pref.txt
4. Execute applypreferences.bat if running on Windows or applypreferences.sh if running on Linux or Unix
5. Stop and restart the Discoverer server
Discoverer Administrator using this workflow:
1. Launch Discoverer Administrator
2. From the menu bar, select Tools | Privileges
3. Select the user
4. Open the Query Governor tab
5. If "Prevent queries from running longer than" is checked, increase the limit
6. Click OK
Note: if "Prevent queries from running longer than" is not checked then the Timout in the pref.txt controls how long before the queries stop. If it is checked and it is lower than Timeout you need to increase it.
Let me know if this helps

• Splitting an event takes more than 3 min

Hi,
I have about 8.000 photos in my library and 2.500 photos in a single event. Now I want to extract a set of pictures from this event and move it in a new event. Is there a faster way doing this than splitting the event before and after the set of pictures? This created 3 events and then I have to move the 3rd event back into the first, the 2nd event is what I want to keep.
BTW, with over 8.000 pictures in the library, is it normal that splitting an event takes more than 3 minutes?

Danielle
Flag the pics you want to move to the new Event and the go Events -> Create Event from Flagged Photos. That will probably be faster.
BTW, with over 8.000 pictures in the library, is it normal that splitting an event takes more than 3 minutes?
I wouldn't have thought so, but it might take a while with an Event that has more that 2,500 pics in it. Remember, Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents). So splitting an event literally means creating a folder and moving files to it and so on.

• How to make an indicator takes more than one input

Hello,
I want to know how to make an indicator ( like gauge for example) response to more than one case strrcuture result. In other words, how the indicator can take more than one input and move based on different input values ( the arrow of the gauge moves to different angles basesed on the logic structure and not only to one degree).
Thanks in advance,

YES, you got it right Coastal !
This is what i want to do,
I dont know how to establish this output in the software, i am still learning LabVIEW.
I put a merge block to join the outputs but it didnt work.
check it in the attached VI file.
I am sure it is an easy thing but I dont know how to implement it.
Any help you provide is appreciated,

• IChatAgent takes more than 100% of CPU

The iChatAgent takes more than 100% of CPU. It works normally for 10-15min with little CPU usage but then takes 100% of CPU and stays like that until I quit/kill the process. I tried waiting for hours to see it might go down is usage, but no, and the cpu fan remains on continuously.
I simply use it for text based chatting, and have disabled audio, video, microphone etc, and still this behavior that I can't use it for more than 15min.
Here is the iChat version: Version 5.0.3 (745)
Macbook Pro/10.6.4/Intel Core i7
I have tried removing ~/Library/preferences/com.apple.iChatAgent.plist as suggested elsewhere, and that hasn't helped either.

Thanks again Ralph.
No, I do not have any add-ons, just out-of-the-box ichat without any audio, video in use.
At this stage unfortunately, I can't continue using iChat as it hogs up the CPU in less than 15min. And that I do not experience any problem with other chat-clients such as AIM or jabber, so switching over to those until there is a resolution.

Every time I login, I have to select Country. It takes more than one attempt to select one. What could be done to save it so I don't have to select it repeatedly?

Is this PSE 12? You should not be logging out. In PSE 12 log in = activate. When you log out you are deactivating PSE. Just leave it logged in.

• When recording a Video demo slide in Captivate 8, pressing the [END] key takes more than a minute to stop the recording. Why is there such a lag?

When recording a Video demo slide in Captivate 8, pressing the [END] key takes more than a minute to stop the recording. Why is there such a lag? Additionally, the software I record experiences terrible lag times. For instance, It may take 15 seconds to display a 2-digit number I typed into a blank field. the same software has no lag issues when I'm not recording it.

Yes and no. The CPTX file is on my PC. Our software that I'm making the demo of is on the network. but I'm not the "IT Guy" so I can't provide specifics; however, I work at a computer software company and we probably have more servers than employees. The network hardware is kept current. I've been making similar tutorials for 10 years and haven't run into this issue until switching to the subscription Captivate.
