[SOLVED] filesystem 2014.07-1 + systemd 215: cannot boot

Hi!
With latest systemd + filesystem, i was no more able to boot.
Systemd fails to start initrd-switch-root.service; downgrading (lib)systemd(-sysvcompat) only is not enough, I had to downgrade filesystem too, to be able to boot.
There is probably a problem with the /etc/os-release move (i guess). I tried symlinking /usr/lib/os-release to /etc-osrelease (*after i downgraded to systemd 214*, so i had only filesystem 2014.07) and it failed anyway.
And obviously emergency shell did not show up (don't ask me the reason why...) even if OnFailure says it calls emergency.target...

Hi!
This seems not be fixed for any non default kernel! At least a one successful boot with the default kernel (of Archlinux) is required or maybe the mentioned recreation of the mkinitcpip with a custom-kernel also fixes this. So in other words:
Everyone who doesn't use the Archlinux-Kernel needs to be instructed to rebuild the mkinitcpio for the custom kernel or a reboot with the kernel supplied by Archlinux.
// update
Probably this fix for systemd 215-2 trigger the creation "to late" i.e. not during the upgrade itself?

  • [SOLVED] Setting up system encryption... cannot boot!

I have been trying to set up system encryption with an existing Arch install. I have taken the following steps (based on the Wiki article), but for some reason can no longer boot.
    Steps:
    * Backed everything up
    * Overwrote /dev/sda with random data
    * Created three partitions on /dev/sda: a boot partition (/dev/sda1), a swap partition (/dev/sda2), and a root partition (/dev/sda3)
    * Set up swap on /dev/sda2
    * Set up LUKS on /dev/sda3
    * Moved my original /boot directory over to /sda1
When I power on, grub does not start. Instead, I see only a flashing underscore. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for all of the help (and for being one of the best communities out there).

jnguyen wrote:As a side note, you probably want to encrypt your swap as well. User data may get swapped out and thus become accessible. There are instructions for this on the LUKS arch wiki page.
Yes, I did set up swap encryption as the LUKS wiki page describes. Thanks for the important note.
JackH79 wrote:Did you go through this?
Not completely. Running grub-install did seem to help though -- right now, the grub shell does appear upon boot. I'll try to work through the whole process and report back as soon as possible.
Otherwise, does it seem that I'm mostly on the right path? This is my first time playing with encryption, so I hope this to be a learning experience more than anything.

I had this problem too in my laptop and that fsck solved it very well!
unfortunatly I cannot say the same thing about the external hard drive that is connected to the desktop which has a fat32 filesystem corrupted.. I'm trying to find some courage to format it, because testdisk can only recover the files with some default name.. thats not good enough because 320GB of music, movies and documents isnt very usefull without the real names.. x| I guess this is just not my day

    There's a /sbin/fsck.vfat as well.

  • Systemd 215-4 breaks automount shares

    Hi,
I use systemd automount feature to mount samba shares at boot with the following entry in /etc/fstab :
    //nas/partage /home/hubert/nas cifs noauto,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.device-timeout=10,credentials=/home/hubert/.smbcredentials 0 0
This worked fine until I upgraded to systemd-215-4.
Now, automount fails with the following error :
    systemd[1]: home-hubert-nas.mount mount process exited, code=exited status=32
Downgrading to systemd 214-2 solves the mount problem, but on shutdown, a 90s timeout occurs on unmounting  with the following message : "A stop job is running for /home/hubert/nas
    Any idea ?

After some digging, I answer to myself :
The "mount" issue has been declared on bugzilla  bug #81529 and a workaround is also described by the author (thanks)
The "unmount" issue occurs only for network shares and Wifi network connection (unmounting network share is ok on wired connection)

  • MacBook Pro Retina (Mid-2014) Cannot Boot Camp

    Hi all,
I'm running OS X Yosemite (10.10.2) on my MacBook Pro Retina 13" (Mid 2014). I have tried to boot camp the machine but it's not working. After boot camp assistant has created the Windows 8.1 installation disk and saved all the drivers and software onto my thumb drive, it will then request for me to choose the size of the partition. However at the last step when I click the "Install" button, my computer will restart and boot into OSX. In Disk Utility the BOOTCAMP partition is there, but in System Preferences BOOTCAMP is not listed as a Startup Disk. I have tried to restart the computer while pressing the option key, and startup manager appears. However under startup manager only Macintosh HD is recognised and my BOOTCAMP partition or windows installation USB both do not appear. I have tried to create a partition manually in Disk Utility and open Startup Manager again to install windows from my thumbdrive, but again both thumbdrive and windows partition do not appear. Please help.
    Thanks.

Since you have a Mid2014 MBP, the USB should contain the Windows installer and BC drivers. Make sure your USB is a USB2 flash drive/disk. USB3 will fail.
There should be no hubs between the USB and the MBP and no other external peripherals connected to the Mac.
However at the last step when I click the "Install" button, my computer will restart and boot into OSX.
This indicates that the Mac cannot find the USB with Windows ISO and BC drivers.

  • [solved] cannot boot from dd usb and cannot install 64 with unetbootin

    hi,
been trying to install arch for almost 24 hours now. i just cannot manage to setup USBs to boot from.
first i was using unetbootin, but when the device not found error came up i tried using the methods recommended in the wiki. however, my hp elitebook 2540p cannot boot from the usb created using dd or imagewriter. so i went back to unetbootin and figured out the error was that the syslinux.cfg file needed to have ../../ replaced by archisobasedir=arch archisolabel=KINGSTON. now however, i cannot seem to figure out how to install a 64 bit system. when i run pacstrap all packages have i686 at the end, which i assume means its the 32 bit one.
    help
EDIT: ok i have now used 3 different USB sticks and run
    sudo dd if=~/Downloads/archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso of=/dev/sdd
on them. plugging them into the 2540p the laptop just wont boot. it wont get past the first hp screen, where i normally press esc to enter the menu so i can choose boot options. the usb just blinks and nothing happens. this same problem happens with imagewriter in windows.

    i wrote exactly
    sudo dd if=~/Downloads/archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso of=/dev/sdd
as mentioned in the edit above, the computer wont get past the hp screen where one gets the option to press the esc key... the usb just blinks and nothing happens...
    EDIT:
no the usb was not mounted...
the image was checked with both sha1sum and md5sum...
    EDIT2:
ok so i think i am in... i reformatted the usb with fat filesystem, and then went through the second instructions from the wiki, ie installing "Without overwriting the USB stick"... But i am still wondering why i couldnt just do the normal dd method. Is it that the hp bios cannot read certain filesystems?

  • [SOLVED] Filesystem check failed on LVM partition...

My server experienced a power outage last night, and I noticed today that it wasn't booting correctly. Apparently, the storage partition, /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-lvolstorage fails the filesystem check. The first time I booted into it, I ran a manual check and answered (y) to the questions. Now when booting, it quickly displays a bunch of numbers and that scrolls for a little while (goes too fast to understand what they are...). Then it says:
    ####Filesystem Check Failed####
Please repair manually, blah blah blah
I'm not really sure what to do. Running fsck does the whole numbers scrolling across the screen thing again, finally asking if I want to clone multiply-claimed blocks... =/ I don't want to answer yes anymore until I get someone's input. <_<
EDIT: It said before that there are 81 inodes containing multiply-claimed blocks... Then it said a certain large file (inode #20) has 27818 multiply-claimed blocks shared with 24 other files, and it then lists other files.
    Last edited by XtrmGmr99 (2010-05-21 14:14:25)

It went ahead and fixed the filesystem, however some of the files (music files mostly) are corrupted and won't play. I have backups of those so it's no big lose, as long as the file system works now.

  • [SOLVED]How to show/retain systemd messages like in Debian/Ubuntu?

So I'm just in vanilla install, nothing fancy. But I see that there were very few systemd messages at boot, only fsck's at partitions, unlike in Debian/Ubuntu where it shows everything? How do I make it like that?

I don't use an SSD, I think. But thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot boot from raid1 after upgrade

My system cannot boot from software raid(1) after upgrading the kernel to version 3.2.13-1. I realized then, that mkinitcpio.conf was overwritten (probably missed that in a previous upgrade). So I put back "mdadm" to HOOKS and "raid1" to MODULES. Unfortunately it didn't help. This is the boot-up screen:
    Any ideas?
Last edited by dito (2012-03-28 13:10:52)

Thank you for your answer. I replaced the mdadm hook with mdadm_udev and updated my mdadm.conf. Removing the hd configuration stuff from grub then finally did the trick. Works again!

  • Cannot boot into Windows XP, should I replace hard drive?

THE PROBLEM: I have not been able to boot into or use Windows XP (SP2) for almost 3 years. I have been using Linux instead for 3 years and am using it now. The Windows Recovery process only half works, it works up until you have to boot up the computer from the hard drive. Then it no longer works. The computer will load the files from the TOSHIBA Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD that came new with the computer onto the hard drive. But when you get to the point of booting off the hard drive, with newly added Windows & Toshiba files, nothing happens. It does not boot up into Windows XP. In fact I can see the newly added Windows & Toshiba fileson the hard drive when I boot into Linux (Live) off the hard drive.
THE HARD DRIVE (Specs below): I ran a SMART Data check using a Linux (Ubuntu) Disk utility on the hard drive and it passed everything except for Reallocated Sector Count. There are 20 bad sectors. I called the Toshiba 800 # on the DVD and they told me that the problem may be the hard drive. A new TOSHIBA Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD costs $40. Toshiba also said there is no Windows XP Recovery Console on the DVD.
CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM: I think, and TOSHIBA agreed it is either the hard drive or corrupteD files on the TOSHIBA Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS: I have found a couple of sites that seem to have instructions for making a  Windows XP Recovery Console CD. And I have thought I might try to run some Windows XP Recovery Console commands  from such a CD, such as fixboot, fixmbr, etc. The try to see if I can boot into Windows XP from the hard drive. If I can, then that might suggest he problem is corrupted files on the TOSHIBA Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD. If I still cannot boot into Windows, then maybe I should replace the hard drive. This should be very easy to do.
QUESTION(S): Does anybody have any comments or suggestions? Does my approach sound good? Do you have any other suggestions?
I have a TOSHIBA Satellite L25 S1216 that I bought new in early 2006. It has a 40 GB (5400 RPM) Enhanced IDE (ATA-6) 9.5 mm height hard disk drive in it. User removable, i.e., it is easy to replace.
    Thank you,
    Bob
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

My plan is to try to use the TOSHIBA Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD to load the WIndows XP files onto the hard drive, then use the Windows XP Recovery console CD I downloaded from here
    http://www.proposedsolution.com/downloads/download-windows-recovery-console/
by using commmands such as fxmbr, fixboot, etc to see if I can get the computer to boot up into Windows XP.
    Good plan, Bob!
Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console for advanced users
A backup plan would be to obtain a Windows XP installation CD from eBay or wherever. They are super cheap now. Then you could install Windows clean and add the drivers and utilities from the website here. Or you could use it to repair-install Windows.
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
You are entitled to activate Home Edition for free. I understand that even after Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP (in April), they will honor activation attempts.
I wouldn't mess with SSDs. And stick with IDE PATA drives. You won't need to worry about advanced-format technology since that didn't come along until the very recent SATA drives. Your BIOS should support 120GB (KB303013).  Some here.

  • Cannot boot from osx or cd, help

    Hi,
I have a problem. My macbook 5.1 boots only to windows, not to cd or osx. I am not sure what has happened but I think I installed the latest security update. I have a backup with time machine (osx) and vista with windows backup. I can wipe the whole disk clean (I do this only if I am absolutely sure it will work, CD is now unresponsive, what about if network fails...).
However, I cannot boot from CD, to verbose mode or to single user mode. None of the keys work (eject, c, s, v, cmd+c, cmd+v, cmd+s) anymore at startup. My installation dvd is stuck into the cd-rom. The eject button does not work in windows (otherwise the vista works perfectly). Also the refit screen has disappeared.
This problem is caused (to my knowlege) due to following actions:
    1. security updade => failure to boot osx (hangs to apple-logo and shuts down)
    2. recovery from time machine to 2 days old configuration (last known working)
    3. current status, no cd, osx or startup buttons
This is my work computer and I need the linux (osx) part on monday. Please help.
    Juha
    Technical details:
    - refit
    - osx leopard
    - macbook 5.1
    - vista created with bootcamp
    - timemachine 500Gb

I got the problem worked out. Now that I have the possibility to boot from cd I used the recovery from timecapsule again. Now it worked more properly. There is some issues with some programs and data (missing), but thats another story.
Last time I left the recovery program calculating the space needed (step 1) overnight, as takes a lot of time. I finished the step 2 (choose recovery date and copy the files) in the morning. I was not at the computer when it did the thing and I only saw the text 'recovery complete'.
Apparently there is a 'feature' that if you lose the connection between steps 1 and 2, the recovery program copies the network path that is empty (connection lost -> empty path). The program thinks everything is copied and gives 'recovery complete' message.
The problem is now mostly solved, some programs are not recovered. This is seen as question mark icons in the tray. Overall I have succesfully recovered from the latest security update.
    Juha
P.S. My original login name has disappeared from this forum. I am the same guy as Dv3. Could some admin mark this as solved.

    That makes sense.
    1. Restore the default VDC config.
    2. Create your second VDC.
    3. Restore the second VDC config.
Don't forget to have a backup of any license files that you may have purchased, for example MPLS.

  • TS1587 My iMac 27" model mid 2010 cannot boot

My iMac 27" model mid 2010 cannot boot , it shut down after apple logo running a while. It happened after I'd installed ntfs-3G and restart the system

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Illustrator CC 2014 (18.1.1) won't boot! Can you help?!

I have a MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009) running 10.10.2 (14C109) and Illustrator CC 2014 (18.1.1) won't boot. It crashes IMMEDIATELY! I've already uninstalled and reinstalled it. I REALLY need this software. It's my primary production App. Can you help? Thank you!

    bb,
There have been reports on an issue with Extensions Suitcase a while back.I wonder whether that can still be relevant:
Here is the Extensions Suitcase 5 update that may solve the issue:
    http://www.extensis.com/support/product-support/suitcase-fusion-5/
    Direct update link:
    http://bin.extensis.com/SuitcaseFusion5-M-16-2-5.zip
Or you may consider an upgrade to Suitcase Fusion 6:
Otherwise, there may be something relevant in the Other options (follow the link with that name), such as item 1) or 11).
