(SOLVED) Firefox(foxtab)

I just started using arch again, and I'm missing the topsites browser feature from Mountain Lion. Is it possible to use the "foxtab" extension in firefox with arch? I've seen it working in other distro's.

I found a solution.
Open the foxtab page.
In the bottom left hand corner, Right Click on edit.
Click on Global Settings.
Click on the Advanced Tab.
Click on Trusted Location Settings.
Click on add folder.
And add this path: /home/username/.mozilla/firefox.

  • [half-solved] Firefox won't open GtkFileChooserDialog

    Hey,
i have a rather strange problem: In Firefox i can't open the "Save File" dialogue. Whether it's in Preferences -> General -> Browse (to change the Download directory) or just rightclicking any link and trying to save it - no dice. The download folder is set to Desktop (can't change it) and even though that directory exists and when set to save files automatically, Firefox will not save/download files.
    Effectively, i can't download.
GtkFileChooserDialog shows up fine in any other application, including Chromium.
I can't tell you much about how this happened. I set up the system about a week ago and i have an almost 1:1 identical installation on my laptop where i don't have this issue:
Identical .mozilla folder, theme and gtk configuration, mime configuration, file browser, almost all the same packages, really.
The only differences might be some files in $HOME (though not .mozilla), i've had that partition for years. Though, again, most important config files are shared between the laptop and the PC and i have already deleted the .cache and any firefox related files as well as started firefox in safe-mode. FFS. The PC also uses ATI Catalyst drivers but i doubt that's related.
    WM is Awesome 3.4.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Cheers
    P.S.:
I've found out that setting "browser.folder.downloadList" (in about:config) to 2 (integer) fixes this problem. But it's very shaky, when i try to change the directory in the Preferences it will revert back to "browser.folder.downloadList 0" and the problem reoccurs. So, i won't mark this solved just yet but this a workaround for now. Still don't know why or what exactly is happening.
Last edited by demian (2013-11-30 11:32:35)

Try using Mozilla's Firefox build and see if it still happens.
Also try switching to the open-source ATI drivers instead of Catalyst. Despite your doubt it *may* be the issue.

  • [partially solved] firefox and input boxes

I've updated firefox to 3.5 recently, after update, I noticed that input boxes look too long.
here's a screenshot of www.archlinux.org (pay attention to package search area)
and here's a screenshot from google.
I dont have any problems with midori, it renders the page fine:
I tried changing firefox theme and gtk theme but it didnt help.
So, any ideas about this problem?
    solved
well, i've solved my problem by changing main font from Lucida Grande to another font.
    Last edited by ras0ir (2009-07-14 08:43:05)

I had exactly the same problem but i didn't want to change my system font because i really like the elegance of 'Lucida Grande'.
I tried a bit tweaking Firefox with creating userChrome.css but it didn't work for me.
Then i installed the stylish addon and created a custom userstyle:
    * Bugfix for the firefox input fields when using 'Lucida grande' as system font
    @namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
    input {
    font-family: sans-serif !important;
With this workaround all input fields are at the right size again. Of course 'sans-serif' shouldn't again point to 'Lucida Grande' For me it's 'DejaVu Sans'.
Could someone help me to realize this workaround with a userChrome.css so i don't need the stylish extension anymore?
Also this tweak applies to all 'input' fields - e.g. to buttons, too. How can i specifiy, that it should only target single-line text inputs?
    cheers
    Fat

  • [Solved] Firefox 3 betas give me some weird behaviour with images

I understand that there will be problems with beta software, however I seem to have memory issues with the firefox 2 series, so I thought I'd give the beta packages a try. I'm using the firefox-nightly package from AUR (firefox3b4), and I'm getting some weird behaviour. The same behaviour can be seen in all firefox 3 beta builds, however. It's hard to explain the problem, so here's a screenshot:
Notice that the image appears twice, once in the tab, and once in the tab toolbar next to the title of the tab. It looks like an attempted preview gone terribly wrong. Upon closing the tab, the tab toolbar shrinks down to the normal size and all is well. This happens with most images up to a certain size. Any one else experiencing this problem? Any suggestions? This is very annoying and I would like anyone's input on the problem.

Wow! This issue was solved in #archlinux by Nuked. Apparently I had some funky bits in my .mozilla directory. Removing it solved the problem. Remember kids, IRC is your friend. Anyone else experiencing weird stuff with their Firefox install should give this solution a try.

  • How to solve Firefox keep accessing Program Files when I open it?

When I open Firefox, instead of showing the homepage(which is google.com for me) it bring [file:///C:/Program%20Files%20%28x86%29/Mozilla%20Firefox/]. I don't want it to be this way but I don't know how to solve it.
    please help :D

Open a new window or tab. In the address bar, type '''about:config'''.
If a warning screen comes up, press the '''Be Careful''' button.
This is where Firefox finds information it needs to run.
At the top of the screen is a search bar. Enter '''browser.newtab.url'''
    and press enter. '''browser.newtab.url'''
tells Firefox what to show when a new tab is opened.
    If you want, right click and select '''Modify'''. You can change the setting to;
    '''about:home''' (Firefox default home page),
'''about:newtab''' (shows the sites most visited),
    '''about:blank''' (a blank page),
or you can enter any '''web page''' or '''about: page''' you want.
The same instructions are used for the new window setting, listed as
    '''browser.startup.homepage'''.

  • [SOLVED] Firefox won't let me access my online banking

    Hi,
I have a desktop icon for my online banking on my desktop for one click service. All I have to do is click, Sign In and I am there.
Lately my computer has been in the shop for shutting off problems. I just got it back and tried to access my bank account through the icon (and also by bypassing the desktop icon, too by going directly to the website and trying to sign on from there) with no access.
I sign in my username and it takes me to a page that says:
    Service Error
We could not proceed because of the following error(s):
Messaging error occurred. If sending a reply please remove any non-keyboard characters from your response as replies cannot contain special characters.
I don't know what this is talking about.
When I try using Internet Explorer to try and sign in to my bank, I am able to do so.
This tells me that Firefox is somehow blocking me. Can anyone help me fix this problem? Firefox used to do this just fine (allow me access to me bank).
    Thank you.

  • [SOLVED] firefox and thunderbird freeze

Hi, since a few day I've had issues with both firefox 9 and thunderbird 9. Firefox starts normally, but whenever I touch try to open a menu it freezes. If I start ff from a terminal I don't get any error error messages it just hangs. Killing the program from the gui does not work, but I when started from the terminal ctrl-c kills it without any problems. The problem only occurs for the main toolbar, my bookmarks bar works fine, as do the home button, url bar and such. Thunderbird shows similar freezes, but they occur consistently after starting the program. I think the problems started after upgrading to version 9, but I am not entirely sure, since I don't use the laptop on which the problem occurs much for email and browsing.
I tried renaming my .mozilla folder so I could make a fresh start, but this had no effect, nor did starting firefox in safe-mode. I also tried downgrading to 8.x but then it froze on startup. Since gtk3 was updated at the same time as well, I tried downgrading that one as well, but to no effect As the program is frozen the memory and cpu use are normal.
Does anyone have any suggestions towards finding a solution?
[edit]I have two arch installations on this laptop and just tried updating the other (somewhat neglected) install. In this one all works fine.I'm trying to go over the differences between the two now.[/edit]

The output is mostly gibberish to me but it did help
When I click a menu button in firefox the output of strace turned into a seemingly endless loop of the following
    readlink("/home/patrick/.pulse/6d395381881edc62e30ef1dc0000052a-runtime", "/tmp/pulse-PKdhtXMmr18n"..., 99) = 23

    rmdir("/tmp/pulse-BtWOtBrBLg7x") = 0
    nanosleep({0, 10000000}, NULL) = 0
    readlink("/home/patrick/.pulse/6d395381881edc62e30ef1dc0000052a-runtime", "/tmp/pulse-PKdhtXMmr18n"..., 99) = 23
lstat64("/tmp/pulse-PKdhtXMmr18n", 0xbfe89d70) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
    umask(077) = 022
    mkdir("/tmp/pulse-OHwEwCYtPIhw", 0700) = 0
    umask(022) = 077
    symlink("/tmp/pulse-OHwEwCYtPIhw", "/home/patrick/.pulse/6d395381881edc62e30ef1dc0000052a-runtime.tmp") = -1 EEXIST (File exists)
    rmdir("/tmp/pulse-OHwEwCYtPIhw") = 0
    nanosleep({0, 10000000}, ^C <unfinished ...>
I assumed the .pulse folder is related to pulseaudio, because of the name and the contents, so I uninstalled pulseaudio and friends and deleted the ~/.pulse folder. Now firefox and thunderbird work again as they should. And as a bonus spotify finally works again as well. Pulseaudio has been giving me a headache on this laptop but I don't understand why it interfered with firefox.
    Thanks for helping out.
If the glibc problem turns out to persist I can undo the solved tag ofc.

  • [SOLVED] Firefox and Thunderbird intermittently runs without a window

I'm having an intermittent problem with Firefox and Thunderbird. When I attempt to launch either firefox or thunderbird the respective application will show up in htop (I see a bunch of firefox threads) but no window appears and the CPU load is 0%. When the application (Firefox or Thunderbird) is running but not visible, the mouse and keyboard remain fully functional; e.g. I can launch a new terminal and switch work-spaces without trouble. Repeatedly killing the application and restarting it will sometimes result in the application loading properly (i.e. I get a fully functional window with working menus, etc).
I'm currently using Firefox version 8.0.1 and Thunderbird version 8.0 with the i3 window manager on my Macbook 5,1 (with nvidia drivers). I did a full system update about a month ago. I've not experienced this problem on my workstation: a custom built AMD system with ATI graphics. Both my macbook and custom workstation are using the same versions of i3, Firefox, and Thunderbird.
I did a little experiment and temporarily switch over to fluxbox for a while. While using fluxbox I was unable to replicate the symptoms; both Firefox and thunderbird appear to work fine. But, since the problem is "random" it is hard to say for sure if this was just a coincidence.
I tried launching firefox and thunderbird from a terminal: no errors or output of any kind are printed to the terminal even when the application window does not appear. Launching Firefox in safemode does not appear to have any influence.
I saw a similar bug report on the mozilla website dating back a few years (version 3.0 I believe of Firefox). But I didn't see any links to a solution or explanation of the problem.
Any advise on how to debug this?
    Thanks in advance.
(I appoligize if this has already been addressed somewhere else. My search attempts did not yield any relevant hits.)
    EDIT: marked as solved
Last edited by bsilbaugh (2012-03-14 23:23:52)

I recently did a full system update, which includes a kernel upgrade (from 3.0 to 3.2), and the symptoms have disappeared. Firefox and Thunderbird appear to be functioning normally.
It's still not clear what was causing the original problem. I guess I'll just have to live with the mystery.

  • How to solve Firefox update error message?

Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again." The solution I have found to solve this on a previous version, does not work for this Firefox release. Has anyone who had this issue found a solution for this bothersome problem?

Well, that did not work either.

  • [SOLVED] firefox problems with Twitter and google+

I've been having some issues with firefox. I don't know if they are related, but they've been getting on my nerves.
First off, Twitter just shows a blank page with the background picture. I can't view any twitter posts at all.
Secondly, pages which check for browser compatibility all seem to report that my browser isn't supported (it is). For example, Google+ gives me a "Your Browser is no longer supported." page while the list of supported browsers states: "Linux : Chrome, Firefox 3.6 and up".
I'm using the latest version of firefox from extra (7.0.1-1). Also, these problems are not new to this version, as they have been occurring for as long as I've had this computer (~10 months). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Solved, you were right - I installed the gtk-xfce-engine.  It looks exactly the same now.  Also, I installed the font theme I'm using on my 64-bit system, and because I'm sharing the home folder in my 32-bit chroot with my 64-bit system, it all came to life without configuration.  Thanks for the help!
