[SOLVED]firefox/thunderbird spell checker and the mass of languages

Hey guys,
I'm looking for a possibility to remove some entries from the spell checker language selection. Even without any extra language pack installed, there are about 15 different English version available. I have to write emails in more than 3 different languages per day, so it takes about 5 seconds to find the right one in the big list. So any one knows a "hack" or addon that can hide or remove some of these entries, so i can leave the 7 important ones i really need? I want to use the precompiled from the official repo, but if only compile from source will do it im fine with it.
thanks in advance.

/usr/share/hunspell containing all dictionaries that where used. a lot of them are only links to en_US or en_GB. deleted them, and now the spell checker selection only contains the ones i need. Thank you.

• RH7 - Spell Checker and Smart Index Wizard looking in all folders?

Hi all,
RE: RH7 - Spell Checker and the Smart Index Wizard looking in all folders instead of just TOC topics?
While running the Spell Checker and the Smart Index Wizard I am getting the impression they are looking in *all* the folders under the Project Files folder, and not just the topics I have chosen to insert into my TOC. Is this true? If so, is it possible to set RH so that it only looks in TOC topics?
TIA
- avraham

Hi Peter -
Thanks for your reply. Yes, the pop-up topics are in the same
folders as the other topics and I am choosing "Any Status" (right
now all of the topics in the project are the same status anyway).
What's even stranger is that after I posted my original
message, I found that it picked up about five of my 100 or so
pop-up topics, yet ignored the rest. I cannot find ANYTHING about
these included topics that differs from the ignored topics.
Bizarre.
Since I need to move forward ASAP, I am now going through
each pop-up topic individually and using the Smart Index option on
the Topic Properties Index tab. It works just fine; is just
time-consuming, but actually may end up saving me time on the Index
in the long-run, since I can define which keywords Robo adds to
each topic on the front-end (not have to prune out worthless
entries later).
My guess is that this issue may have to do with the
conversion of the files from RH 5 to RH 6. It shouldn't - all of
the pop-up topics were added after I converted to RH 6, but I've
noticed odd things can happen when you bring a project into a newer
version of the program.
Thanks again, Peter.
I don't have an answer but I have a workaround that
I can live with!

Hi, can someone please tell me why the spell check in pages doesn't work. I went to preferences and enabled this auto spell checker and have set the language to british english. But still it doesn't work while it works perfectly in TextEdit.

Inspector > Text > More > Language
Only applies to selected text, like making it a particular font.
It is not a setting that sticks. If you continue to paste in text from elsewhere particularly the Internet it will have a different or None language set to it. You need to select it and make it B.E.

Make sure that Firefox closes properly and that that there are no longer Firefox or plugin-container processes left on the Processes tab in the Task Manager. Otherwise session restore will reopen the page(s) from the previous session.

Writing in pages in Afrikaans. Spellcheck keep on correcting to dutch. Switched off spell check and also looked in System preferences - keyboard. this stops the "Auto-correct" but does not help me with Afrikaans or other language spell check. Where do I get languages other than what Apple offer and where is the dictionary, Library, spelling files.

You are basically limited to what Apple deigns to offer.
Try LibreOffice [free] which has a huge selection of languages.

I updated Firefox on my Mac (10.6.8), and now history is not remembered (that option is checked) and the back button won't work. Help?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

• Is there a way to make the spell check work on the entire web page without making the content editable? Or at least those boxes that appear when you enable spell check on the entire page, can you make them disappear?

I found an addon that allows you to spell check on the webpage but it make the entire page editable and these boxes appear on everything i highlight. Can i get rid of the boxes?

I had thought this situation was solved but it just got worse. In addition to being without service for several days I am now being charged a cancellation fee for a broadband service that BT disconnected in error. BT Vision was also terminated by BT but the set up charges are still in place. Does anyone know who the relevant Ombudsman is? I called BT from America on Friday - for an hour - while someone called Aruj sorted out why there is an order 'in progress' that I didn't initiate; why I have fees relating to a problem created by BT and why there are references to a house move that didn't take place and a BT Vision service I no longer have but didn't cancel myself. He assured me it would be rectified and my bill would be reduced by 139 pounds and we would get confirmation of this later that day. I asked him what chance there was that this would not actually happen - he said no chance at all; my new bill would be 23.50.
There was no text message. An online chat person today told me there had been a fee reduction request which had been declined and there was nothing else he could help me with as he dealt only with broadband. But he would get BT Vision to email me. They always seem so helpful.............
I'm sure I'm listed somewhere as 'a problem', there's no other explanation for why I get the runaround

• I lost my spell check with the last update

I lost my spell check icon with the last update from firefox. I would like to have it back.

I don't think Firefox normally has a spell-check icon. Was it on an add-on toolbar? Do you recall Firefox saying that particular add-ons would be disabled for compatibility reasons?
Let me guess that you used the spell check on the Google toolbar. Extensions for Firefox, such as the Google Toolbar, include a list of compatible Firefox versions. Currently, the Google Toolbar only goes up to Firefox 4. However, people have tested and it actually works on Firefox 5, so there are two workarounds:
(1) Edit a file to revise the range of compatible versions
(2) Install an add-on that lets you ignore the range of compatible versions
This thread has info on both approaches: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/837142 google toolbar does not work with firefox 5.0. why not! | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Help].
If it wasn't the Google Toolbar, a similar strategy still might work...

• Croatian (or any foreign language) spell check and dictionary

What do people from non-english speaking countries do with OS X's limited dictionary.app?
I am specifically talking about the Croatian language (Hrvatska), although would be happy to hear from anybody from any country on how they solved the dictionary/spell check issue for their own language.
I am struggling to find a list of Apple Dictionary.app plugins or extra dictionaries to install.
Now I know MS Office 08 has a Croatian dictionary (altho I can't really get it working) but what about native OS X apps?
I have found a 3rd party solution called CocoAspell (free) but am having limited success with it.
I would even be prepared to build a Croatian dictionary plugin for Dictionary.app if somebody could link me to some sort of instruction set.
I'm surprised Apple have not gone to the trouble of building more dictionaries for Dictionary.app
What do Russians, Chinese, Hungarian, Brazilian, Italian eetc etc do when they want a spell checker / dictionary for their language? Buy MS Office 08???
How does Apple resolve this issue (esp the spell checking) in apps like Pages?
In my hours of research into this area it is clear Apple have not really addressed this issue despite the fact it would be so easy for them to solve.
Can anybody help me out / point me in the right direction?
thanks
d0z

As a matter of fact I found the working Cro dictionary at the same ftp link you provide above shortly before you posted it. Nevertheless your great efforts are fully credited. Thanks for your excellent assistance!
I have also been in contact with the developer of Dictionary Cleaner who tells me the 2.0 verison of his software will be able to import comma separated txt wordlists. Nice.
Good as CocoAspell is I feel Apple should already have integrated this functionality, together with downloadable dictionaries from their site, into OS X.
I was unable to get a working Cro dictionary, or Custom dictionary, working in Office 08 for Mac. Interstingly the windows veriosn of the product offers the full gamet of proofing and spelling tools for the Croatian language (and manay, many others).
So both Apple and Microsoft are guilty of letting down their International customers. I am unimpressed by both. How difficult would it be for Apple to add better sprell checking and MS to port their proofing tools for office to the Mac version.
For the record (and MBU developers): When you change the language in Office 2008 for Mac to Croatian (and prob many of the other languages in the list) ALL the spell checking stops and any Custom Dictionaries are ignored.
Switching back to English restores spell checking but then the Custom Dictionary is opened with Roman text encoding and all the special letters in the Croatian alphabet are ignored, thus rendering the Custom Dictioanry list only 30% effective since 70% of the words in the language contain special characters.
The develoepr of Dictionary Cleaner should consider these sorts of problems regarding the text encoding of word lists.
Finally I'd just like to mention the confusing nature of Croatian text encoding:
The 'input menu' tab of the international System Preference pane would seem to imdicate Croatian is Unicode. Although encoding text files in Unicode-8 mangles the characters. As it does too using another text encoding called Croatian (Mac OS). The encoding that actually works is Central European (Windows Latin 2). Go figure.
If anybody knows anything about the subject of text encoding I'd love to know more. Useful links also welcome
So in conclusion - Come on Apple!, sort it out with interbational sprell check.
p.s. more downloadable non-English dictionaries for Dictionary.app too please!

• Thunderbird spell-checking for non en_US broken

Hi there,
Is someone else experiencing issues with spell-checking support for languages other than en_US?
Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to write and compose a new message
2. Click on the "Spelling" button in the top toolbar to select the dictionary.
In that selection I used to see all my installed dictionaries. Now I only see English (US).
Installed dictionaries:
hunspell 1.3.3-1
hunspell-de-de 20131206-1
hunspell-en-gb 7.1-2
hunspell-nl-nl 2.10g-1
hunspell-pl 20120911-2
Tested with the following versions of Thunderbird:
thunderbird 31.1.1-1
thunderbird-beta-bin 33.0b1-1
It does not seem to be an add-on issue since I also tried it with all add-ons being disabled.
Other programs still properly use the installed dictionaries.

With these (latest) versions of official x86_64 packages:
$ pacman -Qs hunspell
local/hunspell 1.3.3-1

• Pages spell check and Mac dictionary

I find it annoying that Pages' spell-check is not synchronized with Mac Dictionary/Thesaurus. There are words I type that are shown as misspelled, but exist in the Dictionary program. Why not sync the two? It's annoying how many legitimate words Pages thinks are misspelled.

bk,
Welcome to Apple discussions.
I completely agree. OS X's dictionary and thesaurus are excellent, and it would be nice to have them integrated into Pages spell-check and learned words functions.
Please leave feedback for the Pages team.

Hi Guys,
Right now I think that the control cl_wfd_html_text_viewer would do the job, but I need first documentation or examples in order to learn how to build tables or add input fields in HTML.
Any suggestion?

• Spell check and word suggestion doesn't work Droid 4

My wife and I both have Motorola Droid 4s. I have had mine for almost a year, and she has had hers just a week. After I factory reset mine to fix a spell check problem, I noticed that the spell check still doesn't automatically fix errors, and there is no word suggestion. Her's is doing the same thing. When I looked for this issue online, I found numerous other Motorola Droid 4 owners having the same problem.
Since we text a LOT, this is certainly a major inconvenience. We would like to know if there is a fix for this issue, is it OS version and phone specific, and when an update/fix can be expected.
Thank you for your time!

The settings you gave me are the same as I and my wife have set except for the keyboard and input methods. For us, android is checked but disabled (gray), moto chinese input is checked, and swype is checked but disabled and gray. Same as it was when spell check and suggestions didn't work. Now ours is working but what is really interesting is that we never changed anything since it wasn't working. We just woke up the day after posting this and it was working. Hmm. I left the moto chinese checked because why tempt fate?
Thank you for your reply and information. That fact is, my spell check worked for a year and then suddenly it did not. My wife's didn't even out of the box, then the day after I post, ours works perfect. Coincidence? Who cares. =)

• Onscreen font size for "spell check" and "font"

How do I increase the onscreen font size for "spell check" and "font"? I just tried to spell check a document and the font size was so small I can't see what it says. Also, when you click on 'font' to change it, I wish the list of fonts was larger so I could see it clearer. I have pretty good vision so it's not that, it's just the size of the font....it must be at least 6! Thanks for your help.

Hi, Diane. I don't know what sort of display you're using, but it sounds like you have a flat LCD display. At any resolution lower than its maximum, a flat-screen LCD display is always blurry, and the lower the resolution, the blurrier it is. This is because unlike a CRT display, an LCD has a fixed number of physical pixels in it that can't be changed. If you instruct it to "pretend" it has a smaller number of larger pixels by setting it for a lower resolution, each of the "pretend" pixels has to be made up of several real pixels instead of just one, and no pixel can be (for example) half white and half blue: a pixel is an indivisible unit that is always all one color. So the only way the hardware can use several pixels to represent one larger one is to gradate the colors of those pixels as best it can to approximate the intended image, and that inevitably spreads the gradation out — which is exactly what blurring is. This is just an inbuilt property of LCD displays, not a defect that needs to be (or can be) fixed. The solution is to buy a display that works well for you at its highest resolution — which will probably mean a lower-resolution display than you have now.
