Solved! Fix / Repair Nova Button / One Key Recovery after replacing SSD - Walkthru! Yoga 2 Pro

I created this full walkthru for people who upgrade / or replace their hard drive / SSD drive on the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro or other Lenovo products that has the Nova button - One Key recovery solution. I did this on my Yoga 2 Pro. So it should work perfectly for those owners for others I'm not certian but it should be similiar for other Lenovos.
Essentially this will rebuild your laptop back to factory settings including full nova button functionality without having to buy the lenovo recovery disks. It took me several days to piece this together from everything on the web into an easy to follow step by step process so I hope you appreciate / enjoy it And I hope it saves you lots of time.
The process is not that hard but you are completely wiping your hard drive yourself. All your data will be gone. Bear this in mind. You have to be bold enough to try it. And it's not for the faint of heart.
Read through the whole thing first before doing it step by step.
Here we go.
There are a lot of steps but it's a fairly simple process.
Requirements at least 2 USB sticks - One 4 GB or more
Necessary Files:
1. Okr8 Engineer - Wipes the hard drive and creates the necessary paritions to bring Lenovo drive back to initial state.
This is the file you really need.

2. Power Iso - Properly burns Okr8 on a bootable USB for installation purposes.

3. Download copy of Windows 8.1 OEM version - Wish I had found this link before!

For the Yoga Pro 2 you do not need the Windows 8.1 serial as it's imprinted directly onto the bio for others laptops laptops. Use produkey to find you're serail if you lost it you don't have a Bio embedded laptop: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html
4. Get Necessary Lenovo Drivers - Easily accessible on the Lenovo website. Just go and download the drivers you need for you laptop.

First section:
1. Download the OKR8 file. You'll need to install utorrent or bitorrent if you downloaded it as a torrent and not my personal file.
2. Download, Install, then Open PowerISO.
3. Select - Tools - Create Bootable USB drive - Select Yes to Run as administrator - Find the OKR 8.iso on your hard drive and burn to the USB stick.
4. Next create the windows 8.1 usb stick as well. Download Windows 8.1: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
5. Run the Microsoft file and select English > Windows 8.1 and > 64 bit
6. Burn the Windows 8.1 to USb through the software.
7. Relax and have a coffee while it creates the usb stick.
8. Download and save the necessary lenovo drivers onto another USB stick, external hard drive or onto one of the 2 USB sticks you are already using. Valuable if you only have one computer.
Please note: You install all this stuff at your own risk. Propertly back up and save all your old personal data first onto an external hard drive. This process will wipe everything off your drive, including all the paritions (including the old recovery parition if you have one there) and you'd won't be able to get it back.
Having access to two computers is helpful. But if done property you should be good with one. I will not be responsible for any mishaps. This is cowboy computing. Typically for people with too much time on their hands or who are obsessive compulsive types
Second section:
1. Turn off computer.
2. Press Nova button, wait, enter into Bios. Goto to boot mode and switch boot from UEFI only to 'legacy mode". This allows you to boot to the OKR 8 USB your prepared.
3. Shut down computer
4. Insert OKR 8 USB
5. Press Nova button again - Select Boot- Select - USB drive with OKR 8 on it.
6. Let the OKR 8 USB load. - A Windows 8 screen comes up.
7. Once it loads click the check mark and hit the button with chinese letters. This whole software is in Chinese and not in English. Don't worry.
8. Wait patiently. It will say 'done' but it's not all done until the popup windows appears and says All Done. Then REMOVE the usb and reboot.
9. Important* - Reboot the computer and let the OKR 8 software load and install on the recovery parition - It finishes the installation after you reboot. It will reboot again and load into the One Key Recovery Panel software.
Yay! Now select shutdown from the One Key Recovery environment.
10. Press Nova button again > enter bio > and switch back to UEFI mode. *Important* If you try to install Windows through USB legacy mode. You will get a GPT error when trying to install windows onto the hard drive.
11. Shutdown again.
12. Insert the Windows 8.1 USB. Press the Nova button again. Select Boot Options: Boot from the Windows 8.1 USB.
13. Windows 8.1 loads. Select Install.
14. Choose Custom Install and Install Windows 8.1 to Parition 5 - "Windows8_OS"
15. Let Windows Install. Remove USB stick when asked.
16. Reboot. Go through standard windows setup. Install all drivers and program you want in preparation to save the intial factory recovery state.
17. Get your yoga 2 pro or laptop up to the initial specifications you want and then shut down.
Section 3:
1. Now it's time to create the initial backup onto the hidden recovery parition so you can reset the laptop back to inital specs whenever you wish including when you want to sell or give away the laptop..
2. From a shutdown state - Goto system recovery through novo button again.
3. Once it's loaded press CTRL+Shift+O to pull up the command prompt window (Shift + F10 was previously suggested. It did not work for me, maybe on older machines)
4. At the command prompt type in: diskpart
5. type: list volume
6. Look for the letter of volume that is labelled PBR_DRV (eg. H) - This is the hidden Lenovo recovery partition where the initial factory backup image will be saved to.
7. type exit
8. type: H: or whatever volume it is.
9. Your directory should change to H:
10. Type: cd onekey\osimage > This takes you to the correct directory.
11.. You're almost at the end!
12.. Type: osimage /nopbr
13. Type: osimage /fb
14. Wait ten minutes while the initial backup is saved onto the hidden recovery parition
15.. Profit!
16. type exit - Reboot - You're Good to Go.
17. Rock On!
18. Enjoy Life again.
Lots of work but worth it in the end !
Should also work for when windows 10 comes out.

As far as I can tell, Windows 8.1 is merely an windows update, so the license key from your BIOS should still work. If you already updated your machine to Windows 8.1, and a fresh install of 8.1 didn't complain about license key, then you should be able to create a new recovery image from it. For Windows 10, if I am not mistaken, when you upgrade from Windows 7/8/8.1, some hardware ID is stored on a MS server to flag this machine has a windows 10 license, to make it possible to perform fresh windows 10 install in the future if needed. This means if you never have windows 10 installed, then you cannot use it to build the recovrey image (the key from BIOS won't work). But if you have 10 installed, you can always activate it during the process of creating recovery image. Once again, all these are based on my knowledge and I haven't attempt to do them, so I cannot tell if this will definitely work. Try it and let us know

Hi, I don't think this is the answer the user is looking for. Although the mentioned procedure does in fact create a usable image of Windows, the question remains for One Key Recovery.If used, OKR will revert the machine back to factory install, meaning Windows 8.Can Lenovo clarify if there will be some sort of update to OKR so it will revert back to Windows 10?Or our future options will be:1- use OKR to get back to Windows 8 and manually update to 102- update to 10, make an image and restore Windows 10, bypassing OKR? One Key Recovery 8.0 - windows 8.1 - create new partitions

Dear Members,
Looks like I am again back to the start of the loop regarding the one key recovery after checking with Lenovo customer support. Can you help me on the below. However, I still feel that the well documented procedures for One Key Recovery 8.0 is missing rather than just explaining the navigation. I have z50-70 59436412 laptop with prebuilt windows 8.1
Apart from other (recovery,OEM, others) partitions I have 2 partitions which are C (windows 8.1) 890 GB and D (drivers) 25 GB However I want to create additional partitions (4) to organize my files. Can I directly go to diskmanagement and shrink the C volume to around 300GB and then create more number of partitions from the available space?
Is it mandatory to create a recovery media pendrive with bootable OS? As per Customer support "YOU NEED TO MAKE A RECOVERY MEDIA PENDRIVE WITH BOOTABLE OPERATING SYSTEM AS CHANGING THE NUMBER OF PARTITIONS WILL BREAK THE OKR METHOD AND OKR WILL NOT WORK!!! i.e., I will not be able to reset my laptop to factory settings when I create more partitions. Can some one confirm this? Also, if I make a bootable OS, and during restore doesn't it prompt for a key to make the windows OS as genuine?? Can I make a bootable OS on multiple DVDs (as one DVD isn't enough)? Is the approach same as in the case of making on one DVD?
I haven't took the system backup. I want to make more partitions (shrink C volume and create 5 more partitions for easy maintenance). Will I be able to restore my system back to factory settings (using NOVA key) eventhough there is number of partitions mis-match (initially 2, now around 6 paritions)? I am not worried about my data, as I will have backup of important files into external hard disk which I will restore later using other software

If I have a system image after creating all the partitions then will I be able to restore using this image without issues?
Say if the harddisk is crashed and I have the backup image on external OS. Can I restore the image back on the new harddisk? Should the number of partitions be same? Also, should the size of each partition also be same?
Suppose I have a partition on harddisk itself to store backup images (img1,2,3,4,5) and when I need to restore to image 3, and after successful restore, I am sure that will loose the image 4 and image 5 on this partition. Can I be able to restore my system to say image 2 if needed in future when I am running on image 3. Also, is there any limit on the number of system restore for a specific image?

Disclaimer: I dont use OKR .
Based on the documentation and posts I have read about OKR, it requires your HDD partitions to remain the same size as factory shipped. What the Lenovo customer support center stated to you is correct! ANY change to the C or D partitions sizes will cause OKR to FAIL. (there are posts stating such failure after changing the partition sizes).
The OKR create recovery media is designed to work with a Pendrive. It will not work with a DVD.
You could try running Windows backup with the backup being stored on the C drive or on a second HDD/usb,etc.
FYI. A HDD can only hold 4 regular partitions. Above 4, you would have to allocate EXTENDED partitions.

How to obtain data for one key recovery

I have a probleme with "one key recovery" partition.
I had re-size differents partitions, and I could'nt use one key recovery... I had an error message.
so, I had re-installed windows 7, and now, I 'm looking for data to restore the origin instalation...
Can I found CD or DVD with factory configuration ?

Since you have resized the partition, one key recovery wont work. You can take a look here but i cannot guarantee that it will work

One Key Recovery

My G560 was puschased in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by a friend last March 2012 and was brought here in the Philippines and was given to me. the COA sticker says it has Windows 7 Home Basic OS but when i opened it, it has Win 7 Ultimate installed. now i'm getting a windows not genuine notification.
i also found out that my disk drive 3 partitions, C, D, E.
i would like to revert my machine to its supposed original OS but i don't have the original installation CDs that is why i'm thinking of using the One Key Recovery.
will this revert my OS to its original state?will it affect my important files (located in partition E of the drive) should i choose the One key recovery?

You might want to search
MiniTools Partition Wizard, I would recommend you dont use it to do anything with partition size or changing any mbr or partition info.
MiniTools will allow you to look in that 14.75 hidden partition and see if the OneKey Recovery image is there... Sounds like its there. Shows zero bytes used in the disk management, but will have maybe 9gb oem image in it or several chained, to make your drive back to new.... exept I dont know how it will handle that logical partition..
Little hard for me to figure out what you've written there. 5 drives ???? I assume the 97gb is marked Active.
I am concerned your D unalocated drive is saying Logical. It should be same simple basic disk NTFS as the others. That is where the backup lenovo OKR was originally and where your backups normally might be if you dont have a remote drive to do backups to.
or to keep data files or whatever you want there.
I dont know if i should tell you or not, because again I don't know exactly what you have... but back it up... push the one key button. - see if it offers to restore it to new.
If nothing really is in that unallocated partition marked logical... maybe do some web reading see if you can turn it back to a simple basic vollume first.

One Key Recovery for S10-3t

I got my new s10-3t and feel that there are certain problems with Windows 7 and/or driver installation. Secondary portrait screen orientation does not work, and, even more strange, I cannot remove the Lenovo Screen Rotation program from the computer (using Control Panel) - after uninstallation it is reported to still remain there. There are other minor problems. According to Yigit's advice, I am going to perform a one key recovery (OKR) of the system in order to get clean windows and drivers.
There are several questions. Knowing the answers could help me a lot during the OKR process, since by no means I might be considered as an experienced user.
1. How to start the OSR process:
a) Use the OneKey Recovery program whose shortcut I have preinstalled on my desktop, and choose System Recovery
b) Switch off the computer and then switch it on with a small button in the upper-left corner of the keyboard

2. Are there any important choices (questions) that I have to make (answer) during the OKR process? I mean really important choices, not like language, time or user name choice, etc.
3. Would it be possible during to OKR process to change the size of the partitions in my hard disk? Presently I have Local disk C: - 187GB and Lenovo D: - 30GB. I would personally prefer to have C around 100GB and the rest to be D:. Disk C: should contain windows, drivers and programs, and D: my personal files, like photos, musics, movies.
4) After OKR is over, I will get the computer:
a) with Windows 7 only, no drivers at all and no Lenovo preinstalled programs
b) with Windows 7 and drivers, at least basic ones in order to get connected to Wi-Fi internet, to have sound and normal graphics
c) as it was shipped to me, with Windows, drivers and all the Lenovo preinstalled programs like VeriTouch, VeriFace, SmileDock and others, that I have already removed as useless for me.
d) Should I perform any backup prior to OKR? I have no personal files on this computer, i.e, absolutely nothing to loose. Presently I backed up (onto my flash drive) only the drivers from the Lenovo D: disk.
e) Does the system sit in \\?\Volume{64...} where it is going to get recovered from? I do not see this partition in Windows Explorer, but I do see it in Defragmenter.

if you have external dvd rom, i suggest you to burn factory default backup, just in case.

there's a hidden partition for system & recovery files.it's better not to see cause if you see hidden partition under windows, one key recover stops.

Brand new G560 - function keys all launch "One Key Recovery"

The subject line says it all - whenever I try to use one of the special purpose keys, such as volume-up or volume-down, instead of doing the marked task, the lap top launches one key recovery instead.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Sigh. Never mind - first time with a lenovo keyboard, I mistook the little key with the red label at the top of the keyboard as the f-key modifier instead of the fn key at the bottom.

How to use one key recovery-help!

this is a follow to my querry last time since the machine that i have doesnt have the original OS installed contrary to what is indicated in its COA.
i went to disk management and found these 5 drives:
non-letter drive Healthy (OEM Partition) 14.75 GB
C: (system, boot,..., primary partition) 97.56 GB
E: (Primary Partition) 324.35 GB
LENOVO (D): Logical Drive
unallocated drive of 101 MB
what is a logical drive by the way?
does it mean that i still have the Original OS? how will i use the One Key Recovery?

Lenovo G460 Windows 7 One Key Recovery with a Linux Partition

Hi All,
I recently bought a Lenovo G460 Notebook and installed linux on it to dual boot with WIndows 7. There was a problem with sound which I got fixed and everything is working fine now.
My question is:
Will me linux partition be there as it is If I recover the windows 7 partition using one key recovery?

One key recovery is not working in g560

i had deleted the partition D... now i m having two os linux and windows 7..
when i m pressing the one key recovery button it willl display the msg like
x:/windows/system32>
how can i clear this problem..

run one key recover under windows, burn recovery dvds then use them.
probably linux installation has deleted some system files.

OneKey recovery Will access the Factory image backup installed hidden on your computer,
It means that it will revert how you got the system from the store.
Also
Windows 8 Disk can be ordered from Lenovo(fees may apply).
If you want to create an updated backup
On a Windows 8 / 8.1 what You could do is a Backup drive using this method.

IdeaPad S300 & Windows 8 & One Key Recovery 8

Hi, I bought IdeaPad S300 with pre-installed Windows 8 system. I need to create recovery disk, but this model is not equipped with DVD burner. I decreased C partition size and created new primary E partition on remaining space, so partition table is just changed...
1. Is there any possibility to prepare recovery USB flash drive?
2. Can I do this using One Key Recovery 8?
3. What's the difference between making recovery disks using OKR and Windows 8 Reset your PC feature (there is option to create disk from recovery partition image)?
4 Did I lost a chance to recover factory system from hdd recovery partition using OKR?
5. Can I recover my factory system using USB flash drive in this case?
6. All partitions on hdd will be recreated to factory arrangement after recovery?

Regarding your questions:
1. The Lenovo One Key Recovery 8.0 supports recovery creation on a USB Flashdrive.
2. Yes, you can create a USB recovery drive using One Key Recovery 8.0, you may find this utility by typing Recovery on the start screen.
Spoiler (Highlight to read)
3. The difference between the OKR 8.0 and the Windows 8 Recovery are the following:
3a. OKR creates a .wsi backup file while Windows 8 Recovery creates a VHD file.
3b. In restoring the files, OKR 8.0 requires you to boot from the one recovery button while Windows 8 Restoration can be done inside of Windows or by booting from the recovery usb drive.
4. If you didn't delete the One Key Recovery 8.0, you can still create a recovery drive using OKR 8.0.
5. If you created a recovery drive using OKR 8.0, you will need to launch the One Key Recovery button to restore the image. For Windows 8, you can refresh windows or use the usb recovery drive to refresh it (same procedure applies in refreshing)
6. Only the preload OS partition (Drive C:\) will be created after recovery. Any other partitions will not be restored. If you want to clone your HDD (sector by sector), you will need to use a third party application (i.e. Acronis or EaseUS Disc Clone. - Note: backup your data before making changes to your OS).

Additional Needful Things: USB DVD Burner Slimline , a mount of DVD writeable Discs (not practical CDs a lot more) , Time approx. 2-3 hours,a big portion of patience
Prefer this as First big operation when you bought the machine, later is possible, but not recommended.
Note : When nessessary parts or partition moved or deleted/overwritten  it is to late...
Start your engine , when Windows is ready to go...
Plug your DVD Burner in ...
Press the One Key Recovery key on your Ideapad or click the (from now abbreviated OKR) OKR Button on screen ..
You should see this Menu next..
Choose Create Recovery Disc got this next Select Recovery Disc Type:
Choose the Factory default recovery disc
click next button brings you to Step 2 Factory default recovery disc
Insert an empty writeable DVD ...
after a short recognition it shows you the write speed
when its ok ... press next ..
be patient OKR start writing and checked the whole disc , that takes time..
should be 3 discs Windows 7 Starter or 4 discs when Windows 7 Home Premium
depends on preinstalled programs configuration ..
this procedure takes time, even on Atom based systems,from time to time it looks like machine gets hung up, but it doesnt...
If you want a bigger sized harddrive, and / or you want most all recovered, OKR creates a bootable first disc , so you can change your harddrive... if that whole procedure is done.
plug in your USB DVD burner , start your Ideapad.
press F2 to get into BIOS settings ...choose BOOT set first boot to USB-DVD and exit ...
or press F12 (Fn-F11) that provoke the Boot Device Menu, meanwhile insert your first disc that OKR create for you ...
boot from disc..follow the instructions to recover , OKR ask you to create new partitions (or delete old)
answer with yes ... when procedure is done , your new HDD is filled as same than the factory HDD, with one exception
you cant rewrite with OKR ,choose factory recover disc again, when press next ,
you got a warning, factory restore is not available...
But that doesnt matter , from now on.. you can , resize or delete partitions, without have to fear,
emergency recover via dvd is yours ...
Note: Factory Recovery disc creation could be done one time...
Note: Resulted Factory Recovery could not recover the procedure to do it again ...
If you like that program , you can save your straightline running windows with all your work via system backup..
and could create recover existing backup image or running system ... creates a bootable disc same as done above...
but recreate only your windows partition itself , not the whole hdd ...
Note: Why dont choose a flashdrive for "factory restore" ?
Its not provided by OKR 6 / 7 to save @ other media...but you can save your personal backup on those media...
complete HDD backup is around 20 GB .. so flashdrive size last min 32GB ...
at this time flashdrive more expensive than, bought a USB-dvd burner plus a mount of writeable DVDs..

Regarding your questions:
1. You can try to install Windows 8.1 Enterprie (90 days trial). If that works, you can run a diagnostic on the HDD.
- Try Windows 8.1 (download link)
- Create Bootable USB or DVD with Windows 8 ISO
2. You can try these steps to verify the hard drive's health:
a. Use one of the bootable diagnostic tools below to test the HDD
- Lenovo Diagnostic Solutions (see Bootable DIagnostics)
- Seatools (for Seagate / Samsung HDD)
- Data Lifeguard Diagnostic (for Western Digital HDD)
b. Remove the HDD on the G570 and use a USB 2.5" SATA Enclosure to convert it to an external drive that can be read on another PC. From here, you can use HD Tune or the tools above to verify the HDD's health.

Flex 14 Ideapad Windows 8.1 not able to start or recover using One Key Recovery

I have a Flex 14 Ideapad with Windows 8.1. This was bought in Dec-2013. In the last 6 / 7 months I have has Windows crashing many times. The crashes used to end with a message boot media not found. Each time I used the One Key Recovery to restore the machine to factory setting.
Recently, I faced an issue around user id files not being able to be loaded at the initial startup. This time also I used the One Key Recovery to restore the system. After this I have has another windows crash and now the One Key Recovery also is not working.
What can be done now to make the system work again?

When you start up the system with the NOVO-Button, there should be an option for BIOS.
Do you see the hard drive in the BIOS?
Another option is this:
You can use an USB-Flash Drive to start the system.
For example you can give Ubuntu a try, a good tutorial to do that can be found here:

If this system start up without any problems, we can use it to test your system.

What is one key recovery? - G580 (DOS)

Could any pelase let me know what one key recovery is for, in case of DOS.
I have bought a laptop with DOS.
ALso please let me know how to do that/

One Key Recovery is the program which works with pre-loaded Operating System only,
OKR helps user to restore system to factory default using a button, take backup and create factory disks
Lenovo creates three partitions on the installed Hard Disk Drive:
1. The smaller drive commonly known as the C drive which contains Windows and your pre-installed software. The C drive should NOT be resized otherwise your OneKey recovery may no longer operate.
2. The larger drive known as the D drive which is ready for storing your personal data files such as videos, music, pictures etc. Both the C and D drives are visible in Windows but the D drive is MUCH larger to hold all your personal data. The C drive should NOT be resized otherwise your OneKey recovery may no longer operate.
3. The Service Partition (the partition without a drive letter) is used by the One Key recovery system to backup and recover the C partition. This invisible partition requires only 18GB to 20GB of HDD space. The service partition should NOT be deleted otherwise your One Key recovery will no longer operate.
One advantage of having these partitions is the protection of your personal data. In the event you need to use the One Key recovery system, the personal data stored on the D drive will not be erased as the files on the C drive are restored.
Disk Management is an installed tool which will allow you to view these three partitions. You may access Disk Management by selecting Control Panel -> Management Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management.

Since you have bought a dos box you can install windows 7 and use the inbuilt recovery option
