[SOLVED] Font rendering messed up after latest freetype2 upgrade.

I haven't touched my font configuration, but the appearance of most fonts has changed across the board (i.e. in every application) since I upgraded to freetype 2.4.6 yesterday. In particular, the fonts are less strong, and in LibreOffice Calc in particular the spacing is messed up at certain levels of magnification despite having hinting enabled. Here is my ~/.gtkrc-2.0:
gtk-icon-theme-name = "nuoveXT2"
gtk-theme-name = "Clearlooks"
gtk-font-name = "FreeSans 10"
gtk-xft-antialias = 1
gtk-xft-hinting = 1
gtk-xft-hintstyle = "hintfull"
gtk-xft-rgba = "rgb"
I have tried many combinations of AA and hinting, and nothing seems to work. Fonts do look slightly differently when I change the hinting settings (except in Calc), but they do not look as crisp as before the upgrade. Can anyone help me?

It figures that I fix this right after giving up and posting to the forums. It seems that either (1) Xresources overrides gtk settings or (2) Libreoffice ignores gtk settings. I had not had any ~/.Xresources file, but after creating one:
Xft.dpi: 96
Xft.antialias: true
Xft.rgba: rgb
Xft.hinting: true
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
and adding
xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
to ~/.xinitrc,, the font rendering has returned to normal across all applications, The strange thing is that I didn't have an Xresources config file before when the rendering was working fine. It's also weird that fonts in GTK apps looks crisper with Xresources configured than they do with the same configuration in ~/.gtkrc-2.0. I can't figure out why, but at least it's now working.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME is messed up after full system upgrade

I ran a full system upgrade today (last one was about 1-2 months ago) and it went smoothly.
Everything boots normally, and my default GNOME desktop also boots, but all the icons are messed up, as can be seen in this screenshot.
And worst, the overlay panel (e.g. when pressing the Windows key) is completely b0rked and unusable.
The GNOME desktop is the default one with no modifications that I know of. I tried searching for existing issues but didn't find any.
    I'm running Intel Graphics on:
    $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
    Any ideas?

While typing the post, I bumped into https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gn … ncorrectly
After setting and re-setting my monitor resolution, things seem to fall back into place.
Looks like I'll use the scaling factor hack for a permanent fix.

  • Can't activate after latest iPad upgrade. Advises me to go to iTunes but it won't get off the error screen.

Can't activate after latest iPad upgrade. Error message advises me to go to iTunes but it won't get off the error screen.

I am the original owner of an ipad and it woke it yesterday requiring me to activate it using the original apple id used to set it up.
It will not accept my apple id and password.
It does not show up in my icloud under devices.
I have tried hard restart (home + power) and itunes recovery.
I am out of ideas and have not found anything for original owners (as opposed to someone who bought it from someone else).  I did see some posts from last year where a few people had the same problem and took it back to apple and got a refurbished unit given to them since customer service and engineering couldn't fix it.  I was wondering if this was related to the recent ios8 upgrade. Anybody else have ideas or same problem before I hike down to the apple store for mercy?

I think the spacing now is correct, while before it was wrong. The only "problem" is that you got used to a bad font rendering, and now that it has changed for better you feel like it's different and don't like it.
Really, *most* of the problems that people find in Linux's fonts are just because they are used to the awful default fonts from Windows XP. Yes, people can even get used to those fonts and believe they're good!!! And when they see correct fonts in Linux they think they're bad...
What I would do is remove the MS TTF fonts. They work bad in Windows and worse in Linux. You should use Bitstream Vera or DejaVu if you want good quality fonts (especially in web pages).
But, then again, you might think that they look wrong just because you're not used to it... Oh, well...
What does correct font / correct spacing mean ?
IMO, that doesn't make any sense, because that's a totally subjective matter, like many other things in this world.
BTW, I love how fonts look in Windows, and I think that must be the only thing MS got right. Thus, I'm using ms fonts in linux, and a rendering as close as possible (no autohinting or antialiasing or subpixel rendering).
Similarly, I could find a woman beautiful that you would find ugly or just average. We are all different, and it's better that way

After latest upgrades it seems that anything gtk-related (2 or 3) is drawn as garbage, see image on http://i.imgur.com/g57D0KS.jpg

I have the same problem too. the same graphic card model.
I temporarily change the driver to 'vesa' or 'fbdev' to make it render right.
but it may cause the resolution smaller.
    any suggestion ?

  • [SOLVED] Font rendering doesn't work as expected on github

    Hey!
I have a problem with the font rendering on github. On Windows it looks normal, but on Arch it looks a bit bold.
Here a comparison picture how it looks on my arch desktop and on my windows desktop:
So, how can I solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance!
    Last edited by sh4nks (2014-01-10 15:33:39)

As per bohoomil's recommendation, I created and installed the ttf-ms-win8 font package.  At some point, I had an issue with libreoffice actually not actually showing any fonts at all.  After much browsing, I found others who reported the same thing and that the removal of the ms fonts solved the issue (it turned out to be segoe I think).  In the mean time, I tried using the google fonts (ttf-google-fonts-git) and was quite pleased with them… until I navigated to the github page, which was awful.  So in the end, I resintalled the ttf-ms-win8 font package, as the free fonts were apparently insufficient.
So the point of this story is that although I think you can "fix" things to a degree by modifying the font configurations, this is actually a simple case of not having the available font on one's system (and github defaulting to something crappy, as mentioned by nfisher.sr above).
Take this story/post with a pinch of salt though, as I simply put my font configuration needs in the hands of the amazingly capable bohoomil and his infinality-bundle.  I just do what he tells me to do, and my fonts look amazing.

  • Font Rendering Got Bad After 32.0 Update

After the recent update, the font started to get badly rendered. Kind of blurry with jagged edges and transparent parts. It used to be okay D:
Sometimes it becomes okay for a moment as I scroll down on pages, and sometimes when I stop scrolling, the font stays as it is; as if there are specific positions for the text to render properly. However, not all of the fonts are affected. Only the ones inside the scroll area.
On times that the font renders properly, the bookmarks font, title bar, and tab names are unaffected and still appear not-smooth. Same thing does not happen on other browsers. All my other system fonts look okay; it's really just Firefox.
    Restarting Firefox = didn't work
    Restarting Computer = didn't work
Tried setting up Clear Type = didn't work
Tried enabling and disabling Hardware Acceleration on Firefox = didn't work
Tried enabling and disabling the Graphics card itself = didn't work
Tried just about all of the suggestions I found on Google = none worked
Tried complete uninstall and re-install of Firefox 32.0 = didn't work
    Graphics Driver are updated ~
    Windows is updated ~
    I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
    Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6800
I fixed it by downgrading to Firefox 31 which makes me sure that 32.0 is the culprit. As I was about to send the message on top; I tried downgrading as my last resort and it worked. Now I'm only sending this as a report. I am hoping you'll figure out what caused it because I am quite strict (OC) that everything in my PC must remain updated >_<; thus I want to use Firefox 32.0 as much as possible.

No one to help on this ??????

  • Font rendering is poor after a hard reset

After a crash, I had to power off my MBP. Since it rebooted the font rendering has been poor. I have posted an image here to show you the difference. It is slight, but the font rendering used to be much more crisp. Now they appear too soft and blurred around the edges.
    http://img.skitch.com/20100508-xmrup6hx2q3eqqqkj6rekhg6hc.png
Can anyone tell me what might have happened and how to fix it?
    Thanks!
    Mason

Looking at the image, it seems that your computer has changed its font smoothing setting.
You can alter this by going to System Preferences->Appearance and ticking the "Use LCD font smoothing when available" box.
It doesn't apply to running applications, so you need to quit and restart Safari to see the change.

  • After latest ubuntu upgrades for firefox installed, MarketWatch website only displays the mobile site

After latest Ubuntu patches installed (which included Firefox updates) http://www.marketwatch.com always displays the site www.marketwatch.com/m
For some reason marketwatch thinks I am on a mobile device

Not only marketwatch, but also [http://www.dennys.com Denny's] and [http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com BigCharts].
    My solution is as follows:
First type 'about:config" in the address bar...
then in the Filter bar type "user"
Now find "general.useragent.compatMode.firefox" and double click on it to change it to "true"
    Now try the above sites.

  • [SOLVED] Font render/refresh fail after upgrade

After upgrading last Thursday some applications have trouble rendering or refreshing text.
    LibreOffice
    Claws-Mail
In claws-mail, I do see some of the text re-appear after scrolling. For LibreOffice the problem only manifests itself in the menu bar, not in the document contents.
I don't think it's related to the OpenJDK bug mentioned on this board since claws-mail doesn't depend on OpenJDK.
Can anyone give pointers on where to investigate the cause of this problem?
Update: problem seems xrandr/dual-screen related, see my later comment.
Final update: xf86-video-intel was the culprit, see my steps for downgrading.
Last edited by wlen (2014-06-23 12:29:43)

Hooray, managed to find the cause.
Looked through all the packages that were upgraded on that day, you can find these in: /var/log/pacman.log
Then proceeded to downgrade all the packages related to video/fonts things that I recognised; 'intel-dri', all the '*mesa*' packages, 'wxgtk' and 'xf86-video-intel'. Tested after every downgrade, and it turned out only 'xf86-video-intel' caused the font render bug.
    The upgrade in the log:
    /var/log/pacman.log
    [2014-06-18 02:21] [PACMAN] upgraded xf86-video-intel (2.99.911-2 -> 2.99.912-1)
    The downgrade:
    wget http://seblu.net/a/arm/packages/x/xf86-video-intel/xf86-video-intel-2.99.911-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    sudo pacman -U xf86-video-intel-2.99.911-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

  • System fonts became so big after latest virtualbox update

I'm running Arch Linux 64 as a guest on a Windows 7 host, with Virtualbox 4.3.28. After upgrade from May 19, systems fonts suddenly became so big (at least tripled). I am a newbie here, don't know how to attach a screen shot.
I've narrowed down to these 2 package upgrades:
    community/virtualbox-guest-modules 4.3.26-7 -> 4.3.28-1
    community/virtualbox-guest-utils   4.3.26-3 -> 4.3.28-1
If I skip these 2 package upgrades, and all other packages upgraded to the latest (including Linux to 4.0.4), the fonts are normal.

This problem seems a little complicated. It is related to screen resolution but strangely. On W7
    1) if I shrink the screen resolution smaller, say 1024x768, and stay with this small screen, the fonts are normal everywhere.
    2) When boot up the VM, I cannot use a large resolution like 1920x1200 (as my VM was running under before the recent virtualbox packages upgrade). Otherwise, all fonts become so huge. So I detoured this out by booting in small resolution.
    3) After booting up in small resolution, if I increase the resolution, say back to 1920x1200, the fonts on the console (my case terminator) stay fine. However, when I start applications like Sublime Text, Claws mail, the fonts on those applications' menu bar become so huge. The fonts inside Sublime Text are normal. But the fonts inside Claws mail are huge too.
    4) After booting up in small resolution, if first start up the applications, then increase the resolution, say back to 1920x1200, all fonts are fine everywhere.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot start Xorg server after latest update

The latest version of xf86-video-ati seems to have stopped my Xorg server running. I did my usual update this morning and got the new version of this driver along with a xorg-server update. On rebooting, I get the following error in Xorg-0.log

I have tried rolling back to the previous version of xorg-server & xf86-video-ati and my kernel (standard 64bit) but none of these help.
The only solution I have is to remove the xf86-video-ati driver and use the vesa driver. This as least lets me run the Xorg server.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or know of what has caused this?
    Thanks,
