[SOLVED] Fonts And The Linux Console

I love the Tamsyn font, which I have been using in X, but I was wondering if this font can be used in the framebuffer console as well. Is this possible or is Tamsyn in a format that won't work for the console?
Thanks in advance.

Sweet. And can the font be anywhere? Right now, I keep Tamsyn in my home directory and use "xset fp+" to add the font to X.

  • Customising the linux console

Yesterday i realised something. Most of time i am only running apps inside a virtual terminal, even for web browsing, & that with the exception of firefox which i use mostly when visiting webpages that require from me to have cookies or even worst, nasty scripts, i dont use on a daily basis any other apps that requires an X server running to execute.
That being said, i thought id try running my screen sessions outside of the X server in the linux console. After all, and hopefully some of you will agree with me, it sucks less.
But not all things were perfect...
First anoyance was the font. In the 16 months ive been running arch, i had never bothered changing the default cause i really didnt have to. Luckily the font i use inside X , terminus , works great on the console as well, and with the help of tomkx, i set it to ter-p12n.
Second, i realised that my color & screen setups were built to work great only in X. my lovely dark theme was black in the console. i wish there was a way to set the background to a certain color and define black as a variation. I havent yet found a way of doing that.
Third, i knew all along about fbgrab a framebuffer screenshooter. I installed it but it doesnt work. it says it cant open /dev/fb0. does anyone know how to solve that? i am using the ARCH kernel.
Why am i telling u all this. Searching google for resources on the topic turn out to be not as easy as i had expected. It returns gazillion of unrelated results conserning virtual terminals.
I would appreciate it if someone answered the above questions or some tips & tricks about customising the console even further.

lloeki wrote:no you don't need bootsplash or splashy. you need fbcondecor. as stated on spock's page (fbsplash & fbcondecor author) they have close to nothing in common.
no, i dont think i need this either. i dont need eye candy and pictures as backrounds. also i am not willing to patch a kernel just for this.
im gonna try rephrasing by giving an example:
in my .Xdefaults i can set the terminal backround to #000000 (plain black) and set colour0 to a different colour, one that will differ from the backround. i have tried achieving that in console without success until this point. eg. if i set colour0 to #000000 and colour8 to #22222. the result of both is black (#000000).
all my dotfiles, as well as app configuration files take advantage of the .Xdefaults settings described above. but in console the result is too dark.
even though i doubt it, hope the above make the point i am trying to make more clear

  • Term Boy: A Game Boy emulator for the Linux console

Term Boy is yet another Nintendo Game Boy emulator, with one difference:  It uses ANSI escape codes to draw each 'pixel' in the terminal.  It's a fork of gomeboycolor, a Game Boy emulator written in Go.  Currently sound is not supported and the controls are not customizable, but I hope to fix those problems in future releases.
Only ROMs for the original Game Boy will display properly, since the Linux console doesn't support enough colors for the Game Boy Color.  Your default console font must also be 8x16 pixels and support the Unicode left half block character(▌) for the screen to render correctly.
This is my first package, so any feedback is appreciated!
    Available in the AUR:

I was thinking about doing the same thing with a computer back at home that's just sitting in the corner. My parents are currently throwing it out, which is quite a bummer. Still gonna do it though, but now I can think about using something much, much smaller to access the files on here. For controllers I was thinking about hacking one of my current SNES controllers into a usb connection.
The emulators would be snes9x, gameboyadvance, and maybe MAME. Not sure about GB/C or NES though.
For game selection I was thinking about writing a program or something.

MS Word for Mac has never supported Arabic.  You have to use other apps.  Mellel is best, but Pages 5, TextEdit, Nisus Writer, or Open/LibreOffice should work OK.
Sometimes you can make Word for Mac do connected Arabic if you are editing a document created with Windows Word.

How can I change the font and why is it preventing me from doing so?

    Juan,
No, Acrobat is not a word processor.
More to the point Acrobat lets one "work" PDF and PDF is not a file format designed as a word processing, editing, formating, or page layout file format.
PDF is, essentially, a "final destination" format.
What it is is described in the ISO Standard for  PDF (ISO 32000-1).

If you purchase SBS 6.5 with the upgrade protection now, you'll have to
wait for future releases of Linux SBS. You only get the download now if you
had upgrade protection prior to Linux SBS release date.

  • Unicode Fonts In Bash In The Linux Console

    Hello Everyone,
Is it possible to have a Bash prompt similar to the one below using the default Linux Console? Or do I need to install Fbterm or KMSCON?
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … Forum_.231
This is on a newly installed system. My vconsole.conf looks like this:
    FONT=ter-222b
I tried using the Lat2-Terminus16 and LatArCyrHeb-08 fonts but they don't seem to have the characters that I want, specificially the ┌─ and └──╼ characters. I also installed the bdf-unifont package but it seems to be only for X as I could not load it using setfont. I am using Bumblebee with the official NVIDIA drivers but I don't think that would affect the fonts in the console.

    Works fine here:

When I try echo -e "\xE2\x98\xA0" at the console or in an Xterm I get a sold rectangle instead of ☠, although I can copy and paste from the Xterm to this form and I get the ☠. Maybe Terminus does not support the glyphs for the ☠ character?

  • [SOLVED] Fonts in the chromium UI are garbled

    Hi,
Fonts in the chromium UI are garbled like this:
    Pop-up menus are also garbled.
Does anyone out there know how this could happen?
The problem makes my favorite web browser almost unusable, as I cannot see what I'm typing and cannot read the UI menus. Navigating becomes sort of like walking through a room blindfolded.
I have searched google and these forums but did not encounter the exact same problem elsewhere.
Since this is the first time I have encountered this, and this happened on quite a fresh install on a laptop, I might resort to another clean install and not install the unused theming stuff I have installed now (and that I didn't keep track of). I suspect this has something to do with GTK and Pango but I'm not quite sure..
But, if anyone has a suggestion..
    Thanks!
    ## UPDATE
I solved the issue by installing google-chrome-dev from the AUR. First, my intention was just to see whether I would have the same problem with regular chrome. I did, but I also noticed something when I looked at the console output: fontconfig was throwing an error.
So I looked at my fontconfig version, and saw that it was fontconfig-git. I didn't need that to be the git version so I downgraded to fontconfig. After that everything was back to normal. So, there is some evidence that google-chrome-dev, chromium and chromium-dev do not work well tied to fontconfig-git. I am now a happy camper

  • The state of ID3v2 support in the Linux console

Being a Windows user that only recently started to gain a genuine interest in adding Linux to my list of proficiencies, my music collection is 90% composed of MP3 files with ID3v2 tags; a sort of expected setup on Windows machines.
I particularly enjoy the more recent ID3v2 -- as opposed to ID3v1.1 -- because this allows me to store the song lyrics withing the music file. Very useful because it simplifies file management, while removing the need to be online, and many windows players (I use foobar2000) can read all the extra fields in the ID3v2 header.
For the past days I've been trying to find a console music daemon or player for Linux that fully supports ID3v2. I haven't been able to do so. For some reason that I cannot understand, the norm is ID3v1.1 support. As I understand, the Linux community tends towards the Ogg format which implies 'Vorbis comment'. Unfortunately, 'Vorbis comment' specifications suggest that type of metadata should reside on a separate stream. Which really doesn't make much sense to me when the data is so intrinsically connected to the file as is the case of music lyrics. But specifications are specifications, so I can understand I won't see many developers willing to break them. What I find curious however is why the lack of ID3v2 support. What has been stopping the community from developing full support?

Indeed foobar2000 is life changing for anyone who comes across it. It's been my player for many years. Excellent news that it is supported under Wine. I don't have the necessary resources to support it under this VMWare setup I'm currently running Arch on. But that will be a probable solution once I fully migrate to a standalone computer. Thanks Orph.
0mark wrote:PS: As far as i know, there is no common semantic to the extra fields. And then, after switching through some player, you may end up with a lot of fields with alien names and data that hat no obvious meaning.
The fields are well defined under the standard. Essentially it is all controlled by a header that specifies content and sizes of each frame. Then the frames follow with said content. As long as a player follows the standard, it's just like any other metadata that needs to be implemented (say, Vorbis).
I'm not really trying to bring a critic here. I confess seeing no support for ID3v2 shocked me. I wasn't expecting that. Instead I trust there's a reason somewhere. It's not of the Linux community in general to squander a standard. Unless... perhaps, there's a general lack of interest because ID3v2 has really only been fully implemented by the MP3 format and this format is proprietary?

Upon running the admin console I am getting this error "java.Lang.ClassNotFoundException.javax.help.HelpBroker" for some reason I am not going to be able to get any online help at all???
what is the problem and how can I fix this?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • When moving a page from one pdf to another I see a message "consolidating fonts" and the added page does not view properly

I am working with multiple PDF files in Acrobat Pro XI.  Sometimes when I move a page from one PDF to another it does not view properly.  It was fine in the source PDF, but not when moved to the desired PDF.  I also see a message momentarily across the bottom of my screen that says "consolidating fonts".  What must I do to fix this?

    Lloyd ,
Follow these steps for Acrobat 11 .
    Launch Acrobat>Tools>Print Production>Acrobat Distiller
Now in Acrobat Distiller follow these.
    Select Standard in Default settings.
Go to Settings and select Edit Adobe PDF Settings.
Select Fonts and in the font source window select the fonts you want to Add.
Click Save As and then OK.
    See if this helps.

  • The "nvidia-beta-ck" aur package and the "linux-ck" package issue?

I use the linux-ck unofficail repo to install the BFQ scheduler enabled kernel.  Today it upgraded to the 3.8.8 and it updated fine but the 319 nvidia beta drivers weren't installed after the update.  So I reinstalled the nvidia-beta aur package and everything was fine.  Is there a way for it to automatically hook the nvidia drivers into the kernel -- say with dkms or will I need to re-install the drivers everytime the kernel updates.

I think there's an nvidia-all package in the AUR no?  You can probably modify that to work with the beta package.

  • Oracle Linux and the Linux Foundation

According to several blogs and resources, Oracle has been a long time partner and supporter of the Linux Foundation. The Linux Foundation ensures that Linux remains free and technically advanced by marshaling the resources of its members and the open source development community.
Some of the Oracle Linux enhancements, such as Dtrace and Ksplice require a ULN support subscription. It seem obvious that not all Oracle enhancements are freely available. Are Dtrace and Ksplice open source projects? How does it fit into GPL licensing and the tasks of the Linux Foundation?

Red Hat has done a good job to promote Linux for enterprise systems and work with vendors to support RHEL. The product evaluation license and paid subscriptions for necessary updates and Red Hat products was obviously something Red Hat did to make money. Not really knowing GPL back then I though it was unethical to sell Linux. I'm not necessarily a fan of GPL and I guess most people don't understand that it is a copyleft license, which does not prohibit to sell a program for money, but requires to provide the source code.
I think the business concepts of RHEL won't work much longer in the future - Oracle Linux is a good example. So if RHEL gets cheaper, will Oracle screw in the price tag again? The price spiral can only go down. Why not ending it and find better ways to get paid.
People who already have a ULN subscription will probably be happy to try Oracle Linux exclusive value-added components, but will people who are interested to try these add-ons be willing to buy a subscription? I think no serious business buys any cats in the bag, not even for a pittance or just because it's Oracle.
Most business software today is complex enough already. Software evaluation and fancy licensing are show stoppers. The criteria to choose one product over another are often rather vendor loyalty, lemming syndrome, fear of incompatibility, fear to be left behind, market share and cost of ownership. For a serious businesses, the perception or guarantee of future product support is more important than saving a few bucks.
Linux does no longer have to prove that it is a serious and reliable operating system. It think Oracle could benefit from providing everything Oracle Linux for a free subscription, not necessarily GPL. There would be more people trying Oracle Linux for fun or to see what the exclusive features are all about and eventually become enthusiasts and buy a technical support contract for running Oracle products in a business environment, in which case Oracle does not have to be cheaper than RHEL anymore. Competition on the level of technical features will improve a product, a cheaper price won't.

  • [SOLVED] XTerm and the Terminus font

I having difficulty getting the Terminus font to display correctly in xterm.
    In .Xresources;
When I use "xterm*faceName:Terminus:style=Regular:size=10" I get missing characters, like the curly quotes in man pages.  This line is from the wiki.
When I use "xterm*font:-*-terminus-medium-*-*-*-14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" there are no missing characters (that I've found).  However, the display output (like paging a text file, for example) is much slower.  Too slow, so I go back to the missing characters config.
One other issue I've noticed, which may be related.  When I use the control-mousebutton menus, they display very slowly taking 2 or 3 seconds to draw. This happens even without loading my .Xresources file.
    Also note I'm using fontconfig-infinality-ultimate.
    My complete .Xresources file:

You commented that this flavor (the XLFD form) is slow with both xterm and urxvt.
As I noted, the problem is in how the server handles the fonts.
urxvt's equivalent to xterm's "-fa" option is a feature introduced by konsole (a "xft:" prefix on the string).
Actually you don't get "all" of the characters.  To see this, use xfd.  The 10646 encoding appears to be the
original terminus (a small set of 256 characters) with a few others added.  But most of the 0-65535 range is
    filled with a filler-character.
