[SOLVED]fsck hook with new mkinitcpio.conf

Last night when I upgraded mkinitcpio it provided a new mkinitcpio.conf file as a pacnew. When comparing this new file to my previous config file the only difference I found was that the new one included the fsck hook. From what I've read it says that this hook is strongly recommended but only gives a reason for it if you have a separate /usr partition, which I do not. I have separate /boot, /swap, /, and /home partitions. Should I include this hook? Does it hurt? Doesn't matter?

You should have checked the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio#HOOKS too:
Adds the fsck binary and filesystem specific helpers. If added after the autodetect hook, only the helper specific to your root filesystem will be added. Usage of this hook is strongly recommended, and it is required with a separate /usr partition.
I did check the wiki. I mentioned what I had gathered from my reading in my original post, perhaps you should have read it. I then went on to explain that this didn't give much indication for including the fsck hook without a separate /usr partition. So I came here (Newbie Corner) to ask if someone could help me with my understanding, which Gcool was so kind enough to do.

  • [SOLVED] Encrypt-Hook with LVM-on-Crypt fails to encrypt root part...

    Hi,
I think that since the mkinitcpio (0.14.0-1) update (and the regeneration of the initramfs for my kernel) the encrypt hook doesn't work anymore. (At least for me)
I have my root filesystem in a LVM, which physical volume is encrypted with luks.
Here are my hooks from /etc/mkinitcpio.conf:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block keyboard keymap encrypt lvm2 resume filesystems fsck shutdown"
Output when I let it generate the initramfs:
    % mkinitcpio -p linux
==> Building image from preset: /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset: 'default'
    -> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux.img

But I am able to mount in manually within the emergency shell by executing:
    $ cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda3 system
    Enter passphrase for /dev/sda3:
    $ lvm vgscan
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Found volume group "vg_system" using metadata type lvm2
    $ lvm vgchange -ay
3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_system" now active
    $ exit

    Thanks for the link.

ok, I found a temporary workaround that seems to work for me,
I edited the file /usr/lib/initcpio/hooks/lvm2 to add this:
    run_hook() {
    lvm pvscan --cache --activate ay
Now, this will activate all lvm volumes regardless of lvm.conf, but it suits my needs for now.
This solution didn't work for me.
On boot time I was not asked to enter a password for the encrypted partition.
That's the reason I thought it was the encryption hook.

  • Problems with new mkinitcpio/0.8

ok so it worked for a while, but i'm pretty sure that was because the kernel wasn't updated.
so i had sda sda1 [...] and it worked great.
then i installed a SATA controller and raptors 10000 rpm sata disk.
(and tried to make it my main disk after copying over lots of data, which didn't work, but that might have been my own mistake somehwo so just leave it out of this discussion)
now the computer would boot, but only when using the SATA as backup disk(not bootup disk).
To recap i basically have two physical disks.
on the old one i have windows c and d. and linux xfs partition and swap partion.
on the new one (SATA) i have a copy of my linux partition with all the files, but for some reason this one won't work as a boot partition. (this one is also XFS)
also grub doesn't let me TAB-complete the device names like i've could sometimes in the past. like /dev/sd[TAB] -> /dev/sda. all i get is a bunch of /dev/loop? files and some other stuff.
so for now i'm thinking: screw XFS and install ext3 on the new disk then make it my boot disk and hope it works.
also this new mkinitcpio stuff confuses me. I just want to boot my computer! Can someone provide me some mkinitcpio.conf's that would work with the above scenarios?
A screenshotguide explaining what happens if you set these and these options in mkinitcpio.conf during the different stages of the boot would help a lot of people i think.
Right now i'm downloading base-0.8-beta and going to burn it(in windows now) as fast as i can buy some cd's so i can get into my old system and chroot in and fix it somehow, since now it's not even booting at all, even with the new disk unplugged.

well i would post mine, but it wouldn't be very useful as it's dependent on hardware...
basically if u don't modify the mkinitcpio.conf then everything should work as normal..

The problem was in rc.conf. Im posting the file with the fix, the network modules were being loaded in the wrong order on the modules array and I think I had a module missing. Anyway posting it:

  • Larch 5.3. Kernel panic in produced live media with new mkinitcpio 0.6

After updating to new mkinitcpio 0.6.x, any Larch 5.3 live media produced, does not boot, but hangs in a kernel panic.
Perhaps gradgrind, you should have a look at it.

I don't think I'll have time to look after fixing larch-5 any more. If anyone is desperate to keep this branch alive, please contribute code!
My next priority will be to get larch-7 working with the new mkinitcpio.

  • Solved flicker problem with newer fglrx drivers

This has been annoying me since the move from 8.29 to 8.30: I have an integrated Xpress 200 on my laptop, and newer proprietary drivers caused the screen to flicker. This has caused me to stick with the older drivers, which restricted upgrades to X.org and the kernel. I was misled by some posts on the Internet to believe that this was the result of using custom modelines.
I have finally solved the problem yesterday. I am posting my findings in case anyone else has been suffering from the same behaviour.
The newer drivers come with an ACPI script, installed under /etc/acpi. The script is invoked every minute and inspects the current power status (i.e., A/C or battery). It then invokes
    aticonfig --set-powermode=[MODE]
to adjust the driver to the new settings. Each time this command is executed, it causes the screen to flicker.
Obviously, there is no need to run the script if the power mode has not changed since the last call. I have therefore modified the script to first check the current driver power mode, and execute the mode command only if a new setting is required.
    I hope this helps someone.

I need my hand held a bit here...
this seems to be the problem I'm having, ie the ac/battery event being called too frequently, but have no idea how to edit the script. I'm on an asus w3n, will it help to replace apci with asus-laptop and apcid daemon...or just add those and leave acpi daemon?
    apologies for my numbnut newbie-ness.

  • [solved] connectivity issues with new connection....

Hey all, I recently moved and had to get a new internet connection.  Because cable is so expensive in the city (~$57/mon for 1.5MB Cable) I went with DSL (~$36/mon for 3.0MB DSL).
I have the standard SBC DSL modem, connected to my wireless router.  I'm 90% sure the wireless connection is stable.  The phone lines may be crappy in this building, but I've switched to different sockets here and there.  I'm not sure exactly what it is, but my connection intermittently hangs - no, wlan0 stays connected so it's not that.
What I'm looking for is a way to diagnose this... some logging tool that would be able to tell me where my hang is... I'm not a network guru, so I really wouldn't know what to do...
Thanks for any help you can provide...

phrakture wrote:OT: Think it would hurt anything to remove the fan connector from the processor on an 866P3 - the heatsink is pretty large, but the fan is irritating sounding and I don't feel like paying $20 for a good fan for a shitty machine
You can drop it's noise quite a bit by using an adjustable rheostat and using the 5/12 connections to power it.  That's an old OC'er trick.  With your older P3 rig, I doubt the mobo has a fan speed detector, limiting you from posting.  If it does, it won't work since it needs a ground at 0V.  Basically, you'll be running your fan at a slower speed.
Check the OC forums.  I'm sure they dot links to do it.
Oh, by the way Phrakture, I remember my old P3 800.  I had it with just a heatsink for a while, but it ran too hot for my tastes.  I got away with a bare naked PII-400 all the time, but I've been too afraid since then.
[edit]By the way, here's some info for a 7V fan. Just do a google on "7V" fan and you'll get the results I was talking about earlier.  Basically,
" You use the yellow 12v wire as the power connector to the fan and use the red 5v connector as the fan ground.  The fan sees the potential difference between the 12v and the 5v so is run at 7 volts.  Fans can be run at 5v but some will fail to start and air flow is low."[/edit]

  • [SOLVED] pentadactyl compatibility with newer firefox versions

Firefox 34 broke pentadactly (even with a rebuild of pentadactyl from mercurial) - and a comment on the addons page suggests that development of pentadactyl may have stopped.  With luakit in mothballs and portix putting dwb on the back burner I'm running out of browser options that don't suck.
mod note: posts 1-12 here were split off from Grr thread.
EDIT: while this post was not originally intended for troubleshooting, feedback on the grr thread turned it in that direction.  To provide direction for the thread, the initial issue of version incompatibility is solved below, but a remaining bug for hint symbols remains.

Trilby wrote:That's certainly an improvement.  I use hints most often on the index pages of these forums.  While I already knew I could tab through, this could take several dozen tab presses to get to the link I wanted.  Typing a few letters narrows it down so one or two tabs will get there.  Still a far cry from just the number - but better than reaching for the rodent.
I had changed it to use the home keys for hints, so it's not toooo painful, if still irritating.

  • S2disk mkinitcpio.conf question

    Hi there,
I wasted some hours today to get hibernation working properly.
My setup is an unencrypted /boot partition and an encrypted lvm volume group which contains swap and root partitions.
Using uswsusp (because of the s2both feature) I followed this ("poorly written") guide: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/S2 … e_intramfs
Putting the uresume hook before filesystems as mentions in the article, it always complaint it couldn't read the snapshot file.
Then I tried to put the uresume - hook _after_ (on the right side of) the filesystems hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and it worked.
The snapshot file comes with the root filesystem which you have to mount first, so thats logical anyway.
My question here is: Am I doing the right thing here? If yes, why is this part of the article completely wrong? Not very helpful ...
    greetings
    rd

My configuration is the same as yours, and my hooks look like this:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata lvm2 uresume filesystems"
More generally - It's a wiki, which means it can be wrong. Correct it, and enjoy the warm glow that contributing creates.

  • [SOLVED]Bad manipulation with mkinitcpi = No booting

    Hi,
In order to accelerate arch booting, i removed udev from HOOKS list in mkinitcpio.conf, and regenerated the kernel image. Now Arch isn't bootingv:(v, what should i do to fix this?
Last edited by maroxe (2010-07-21 16:15:05)

    maroxe:
Yes, follow the above guide on how to chroot you environment. Put udev back in to the HOOKS section of /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and regenerate ramdisk with "mkinitcpio -p kernel26".

  • [SOLVED] How to restore kernel image after wrong /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

I wanted to learn a bit more about the kernel and boot, and I'm afraid I cannot start up my ArchLinux anymore.
I updated the /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to make the boot faster (with this reference: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/01/30 … initcpio/) and executed #mkinitcpio -p kernel26
I thought that if there was any problem, I could start up with the "fallback image". Certainly, there was a problem (probably I didn´t loaded all the modules required) and when I tried the fallback image, I experimented the same problem:
    Root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/...' doesn´t exist
    ramfs$
In fact, both images are the same (or at least they have the same size)
I tried the ArchLinux liveCD to recover my system. There's no recovery service, so I started up the CD-ROM, mounted my ArchLinux partitions, generated the images and copied into the /boot of my Archlinux partitions. But the same problem is still there.
What could I do to fix it?
    Thank you in advance

Thank you. I follow your instructions and it worked (perhaps it would be simpler with a "#pacman -Sy kernel26"). I didn't know the command chroot and it's really interesting.

I have a similar problem, (read more in this thread), and I solve it by booting off the Live CD, and doing the following:
(replace sda1 with your / partition)
    cd /
    mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt
    mount -t proc proc /mnt/proc
    mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/sys
    mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
    chroot /mnt /bin/bash
    mkinitcpio -p kernel26
after that, I exit chroot, unmount all of my partitions and reboot...:
    cd /
    umount -a
    exit

  • [SOLVED] is the fsck hook needed if the systemd hook is present?

Hiya. The Wiki isn't really clear about this. There are some instructions about building a systemd based init image here, but nothing about fsck.
On the silent boot page there is a entry about fsck , more specifically letting systemd check the filesystem instead of the fsck hook, which involves copying configuration files.
I understand both entries, but after migrating my init image to systemd, I keep getting systemd-fsck messages on boot, and now I have a couple of questions:
Is my disk being fscked twice?
Is the fsck hook needed anymore? What would happen if I remove it?
If I want to turn off the output, can I follow the instructions on the Wiki?
What is the general recommended approach with systemd and fsck?
I skimmed through this thread, but I must say I didn't become any more educated on this topic.
    Thanks.

I just had a quick look on how these things fit together. Short answer: If you want the root filesystem to be checked in the initrd (and therefore before mount) you do need the fsck hook.
    Long answer:
systemd-fsck just uses fsck.* to check the disks (see source code line 288ff.). If it does not exist, systemd-fsck just quits. The reason for this is clear: fsck tools are made by filesystem developers, not by systemd developers.
The fsck hook is the only one that installs these binaries (fsck.*) into the initrd (see grep -r 'fsck\.' /usr/lib/initcpio). That means: No fsck hook --> no filesystem check in the initrd.
    Now to your questions:
DoctorJellyface wrote:Is my disk being fscked twice?
No. The root filesystem is checked in the initrd if the appropriate fsck.* tool is available. All other filesystems are checked after leaving the initrd.
DoctorJellyface wrote:Is the fsck hook needed anymore? What would happen if I remove it?
It is needed if you want the root filesystem to be checked in the initrd and therefore before being mounted. If you remove it it might be checked after leaving the initrd while being mounted read-only. But I did not test that and don't know if Arch actually does it this way. You may quickly test this yourself.
DoctorJellyface wrote:If I want to turn off the output, can I follow the instructions on the Wiki?
If you use systemd in the initrd you would probably have to edit the files directly in /usr/lib/systemd/system, because mkinitcpio copies the files from there. They will be overwritten on every systemd update so that is not a very nice approach. For all output after leaving the initrd you should be able to follow the steps in the wiki (copy to /etc...)
DoctorJellyface wrote:What is the general recommended approach with systemd and fsck?
My recommendation would be: Keep the fsck hook, because it is the only way to check the filesystem before actually mounting it. It works nicely with the systemd hook.

    Hello y'all,
I just discovered that the 'systemd' hook in mkinitcpio.conf disables resuming from hibernation on my system. After I switched back to 'udev', it works all fine again.

  • Airport Express problems with new MAC MINI and DLINK router SOLVED

Hi just thought I would post this as it may well help others experiencing similar frustrations with new core duo mac mini and wireless connection or quality problems across the network / internet etc
I have a 3 week old, new mac mini core duo 1.8ghz 2gig ram, 120gb disk - First Mac, connecting to my exisiting wireless network via DLINK ADSL Router 2MB Broadband also one windows laptop and pc also wireless on the network and two airport express potins to stream itunes to
    Problem was briefly
Mac worked fine, but the network connection just far too slow, laptop and pc, 1800+ kbps downstream mac mini 90 - 150kbps (http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp)
also if i ping the router directly from terminal (ping -c 20 192.168.1.1) average response 12+ ms with 20% packet loss, yet laptop and pc avg 2ms no losses
Spent 2 evenings on frustrating calls of more than 1 hour each (due to being cut off , then ring back and closed etc etc) and carrying out a the helpdesk troubleshooting (I am an IT consultant I think I am above this level), eventually an archive and install of the os as well
last night I call for the third time, insisting I dont wish to carry out any further troubleshooting, and want it replaced and resolved or my money back
I receive a call back from product specialist (not sure if thats mac mini specialist or airport) but we resolved the issue (his knowledge far superior to the help desk do this do this attitude)
between us we carried out the folowing and resolved the problem and I am now very happy
mac now downstreaming also in excess of 1800kbps (as expected for 2mb broadband)and no packet loss
This problem was resolved by switching off the turbo option hidden away in the routers settings, under wireless configuration
Supposed to improve performance, but its rubbish and will make hardly any difference under mac os to the speed but will certainly affect your mac mini performance(you may have a similar setting switched on in your routers and mac os dont like it)
We stumbled across this by first disconnecting one of the airport express devices from my dlink network, and using it on its own default apple wireless settings, effectively making it a standalone wireless network, and not via the dlink router
we then carried out the same ping with the ip address of this device (from airport admin utility default 10.0.1.1) and the results were fantastic 2ms avg no package loss
this established it was something with the router, and how we then interrogated the routers settings and found the turbo on option within wireless configuration
you may not be able to replicate this if you dont have an additional network you could join (such as airport express), but probably worth checking your own router settings for something similar
Hope that may be of assistance to others, sorry that its a bit long winded and garbled, but I'm just so excited to finally get my new mac working as i would expect it to
Also perhaps insist on speaking to a product specialist immediately that the helpdesk are unable to help you

Hello macfar14. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
For just streaming iTunes and/or for sharing a USB printer, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) just needs to be configured as a wireless client ... which you already attempted to do.
Just to be sure nothing was missed, here are the basic steps to do this:
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing wireless network's Network Name or SSID>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
