[Solved] Full NTbackup of Exchange 2003 restores but fails to remount on last week's SBS2003 disk image

Edit - solved - needed to remove present mdbdata folder contents before starting a restore.
Bit of a long post, sorry - trying to tell the whole story.
I run SBS2003 in a virtual machine. I stop the VM and copy the virtual disk file to another drive once a week as part of the backup routine. I also take full ("Normal") online NTbackup of Exchange each night. There is only one storage group, containing
a mailbox store and a public folder store. At one time I tested the restore process for exchange and it worked as I recollect, but it isn't now.
I took one of my backups from last week and restored last night's full Exchange backup from the active server. I dismounted the stores in Exchange System Manager (ESM), marked the databases as able to be replaced by a backup, and ran the bkf file in NTbackup.
I was able to watch the files being replaced and rebuilding in the explorer window while the NTbackup was running. I had marked the NTbackup as "Last Restore" and "Mount after Restoring". The NTbackup restore process completes successfully.
When I go to ESM I find that the stores are not mounted. I try to mount them manually and get an error c1041724 from ESM on each store, saying restart ESM or the Information Store Service. Restarting both still gives me the c1041724 in ESM when I try to mount
the stores. restarting the server vm completely leaves me with the stores still unmounted, same errors from ESM.
I check the application events after I try to mount the stores, and I get these events:
1. ESE event 100 database engine started.
2. ESE event 102 database engine started a new instance.
3. ESE event 619 database from backup set on which hard recovery was not started or did not complete successfully
4. MSExchangeS event 9519 error 0xfffffde0 starting database
5. MSExchangeS event 9518 error 0xfffffde0 starting Storage Group.....MDB failed to start
then two ESE events saying database engine stopped.
RE event 619, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810199, case 1, says "This issue may occur if you do not select the Last Backup Set check box."
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/253931 says the same thing, Last Backup Set not checked during the restore. But I did select that box. (FYI, NTbackup calls it "Last Restore Set" - same thing?)
RE event 9519 error 0xfffffde0,
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258529 says "the Storage Group attempted to restart after a crash, and that the database was restored (but not hard-recovered). In other words, the hard recovery log file replay process was not successfully completed,
or was possibly interrupted."
RE event 619, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810199, case 1, says to run eseutil /cc on the temporary path where restore.env is located. I do so and get error -939523485. I am directed to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328639/EN-US and I see the four events on the KB article are in my event viewer. The article says "old log files are out of sequence with the log that is mentioned
in Restore.env" Event 458 says "The logfiles E0005C75.log and E0005C9D.log are not in a valid sequence". Log file E0005C75.log is in the temporary folder with the Restore.env file. There is no E0005C9D.log in either the temporary folder or the
mdbdata folder. The mdbdata folder has only an E00.log and an E00.chk, and res1.log and res2.log. I do find in the working server that there is a E0005C9D.log.
It sounds like I'm missing some logs from the backup. But it's supposed to be a full Normal backup. I find no mention anywhere that one needs to go back into the running server to copy logs out. What am I missing?

OK, so here's something interesting. Noting that the errors implied I was missing logs (from my "full" backup-?) I said why not also back up the whole exchange database folder too? Then I might get those missing logs. So I set NTbackup
to do an online backup of the Information Store, and the exchange mdbdata folder's contents, in the same bkf.
I try to restore the bkf first to my test server, doing just the information store first and leaving the extra mdbdata folder unchecked. Also, the "Last Restore" box is UNchecked so the logs won't be replayed when the restore is done. After that
restore runs, I then uncheck the information store backup and check the mdbdata folder, and run the restore again. The new logs come in now. (I can't run them both in the same restore, information store has to be first, then mdbdata folder.)
After NTbackup is finished with both restores I go to ESM, right-click the stores and Mount them - no eseutil commands. The databases mount just fine, no errors, and I can log in with remote exchange on a test client's IE, no issues; all emails and
calendar posts from the previous day, up to 5PM when the backup runs, are present. The only problem, besides no Microsoft or other websites that I can find saying a full backup needs a supplemental backup to be full, is that my backups are twice
as big as they were before, from copying the databases twice.
So a "full" backup from NTbackup isn't full enough, and a non-documented shot in the dark gets the restore to work.
Is my server issue-matic, or is something not right here with NTbackup?

My ipod has received error code (9).  I have tried to restore, but failed.  Any idea how to restore back to original settings?

    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • How to restore imovie '09 projects from external HD and old HD disk image.

I moved the imovie events to an external HD (directory iMovie events) and did a fresh install of OSX (for other reasons). Now would like to restore my iMovie projects. I have an image of my hard drive from before the reinstall. Anybody got any hints? I had a number of hours of editing in on some video stuff from my wife's family. Could redo it I guess, but if I could salvage it, it would be great.

Did you move the Events to the external drive using iMovie? or using the FInder?
Let's assume you used the Finder. (If you used iMovie, the fix is simpler. Post back)
First, move the iMovie Projects from your image of your hard drive to the <your user name>/Movies/iMovie Projects folder.
Then move the iMovie Events from the external drive to the <your user name>/Movies/iMovie Events folder.
Then start up iMovie and all should be well.

  • IMac applications see my iPhone 5s but cannot display the photos.  Last week I was using Image Capture with no problem.

I have an iMac 10.8.4 and an iPhone 5s. I recently downloaded 110 photos and 10 very short videos using Image Capture v.6.2.  I plugged the phone into the iMac, all of the photos appeared in Image Capture, I selected all and sent them along to a folder on an external hd.
However, this week, attempting the same procedure, I get nothing.  Image Capture sees my phone but does not display any photos, just a big blank window.  Same response from iPhoto, Aperture, and Lightroom; they all recognize the phone but none of the photos appear.  Insight would be appreciated!  Thanks.

    Hello WellShoot,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with importing photos from your Camera Roll using Image Capture.  You have taken some really good steps already to troubleshoot this issue.  The article below has a few additional troubleshooting steps you can take:

  • Exchange 2003 users are unable to send attachments larger then 8 MB to Exchange 2010 users on the same LAN

I am migrating from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010.
Users who are still on Exchange 2003 cannot send attachments any larger than around 8MB to Exchange 2010 users on the same LAN.
Users on Exchange 2010 can send large attachments to fellow Exchange 2010 users without issue.
I do not have any quota restrictions on Exchange 2010.
Had a look at the Exchange 2003 Connector but could not see any reference to attachement restrictions.
    Has anyone come across this?

  • Will the email client on my MacBook Pro remove mail from my Exchange 2003 in order to receive it?

I just received my new MacBook Pro yesterday and I have an Exchange 2003 server that I would like to work with the email client. now I know some email clients in certain modes will download the mail from the mail server removing it from there at the same time. My question is will the email client remove the mail from the server in order to receive it? I want the mail to remain in the mailbox so I will still have it available at my office later. I am honestly not certain what version of OS X it is, and I don't have it handy, but I just bought it last week. Thanks!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    If that fails:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards

  • MS Exchange 2003 and IIS Server

I recently purchased the 3gs with the understanding it would sync through MS Exchange at my work. Below is what my IT people say is the problem. does anyone understand this and how to solve it"
"The difficulty is actually the same problem we’ve had before with active sync and it’s not an iphone issue but an issue with the exchange configuration. We do not have a front end IIS server in our exchange 2003 environment but on the same box as exchange. That being said there is a known issue with setting up active sync to work properly with out either adding a front end IIS or hacking up the registry as a possible work around on the exchange box which could actually hose the system and bring email down in which we would have to start from scratch. Maybe I could look again after July 1st but right now researching another way could take a while".

There's nothing you can do to fix this specific issue since, as your own IT folks say, it's not a problem with the iPhone. If it's a problem with their Exchange server setup as they say, that's something only they can fix and you'll have to wait until they do.
If, however, they have the mail server set up to provide IMAP accounts, you could be able to set up your iPhone to connect to it following the instructions for connecting to a "normal" email account (the "other" option in the Mail setup).

  • Installation / cleaning exchange 2003

    Hello,
In our environment, we used to have exchange 2003 but the server is crashed and not turning on. Also, we are not concerned about restoring its data.
I want to install Exchange 2013 but am not able to do so as the AD is still recognizing that there was an exchange 2003 version installed.
What is the best way to clean the active directory so that I can proceed with installing the exchange 2013? My current environment is based on Windows 2012.
    Thank you
    Goldenberg

I would reinstall Exchange 2003, restore your databases, and then perform a 2step migration to 2013 if you want to go to Exchange 2013.

  • Remove Exchange 2003 Problem

We are trying to upgrade our 2010 Exchange to 2013 Exchange but install tells us that 2003 Exchange cannot be on our domain. We used to have 3003 Exchange but someone uninstalled it but parts of uninstall failed.  How can I remove the recognition
of 2003 Exchange in our 2010 Exchange manager?  It shows 1 Exchange 2003 server but we want to remove that server from our domain.  Thanks.

    Hi,
Yeah, removing an Exchange server is never an easy job. According to your description, only some partitions of your Exchange 2003 server aren't removed. In this case, I recommend you remove your Exchange 2003 server through ADSIEdit:
    Navigate to this path:CN=Configuration,DC=DOMAIN,DC=LOCAL>CN=Services>CN=Microsoft Exchange
    >CN=EXCHANGE_ORG>CN=Administrative Groups>CN=First Administrative Group
Right-click and hit delete your Exchange 2003 server in the container CN=server.

    Hi,
I think that you have to fill mandatory attrbute in exchange form.
Please fill User Logon Name, Recipient Type, Database, Alias attributes on exchange user form while provisioning.

  • Unable to Restore Disk Image of TM Backups

I am trying to Restore disk images of TM backups to a newly formatted (OSx extended - journaled) 500MB firewire drive. I created 2 partitions, One for each TM image of the backups for my two Macbooks. When I follow the prompts to restore in DU, the process starts and then fails. I am sure that I am missing something. Can I get some guidance from the experts please?
I am preparing my machines to upgrade to Snowleopard, but I need to be sure I have my backups in place before I make room on the internal hard drives for the upgrade.
    Thanks in advance,
    Capt Ron

    Captron wrote:
You are probably sorry you got into this one. I have not explained it well. I guess it boils down to this: Is it possible to restore my TM backups on a new volume, from a disk image of the original backups?
I've never tried it, but apparently not. In Leopard, only Disk Utility and SD are known to work.
In answer to your questions, the original backups (one for each computer) were copied to a disk image. Both computers were originally backed up on separate drives, but the addition of another computer to the family necessitated combining the TM backups for my 2 laptops onto one drive. I could not copy them using the method in the FAQ (#18) because I wanted to use the same drive, only with 2 partitions. I tried adding a partition with DU but it failed each time due to lack of space.
As long as each partition was at least as large as the corresponding old drive, that should work. But you can't copy, say, 100 gb of backups into a 50 gb partition: you must copy the entire partition into a new partition. If the old partition was not full, and old backups were not scattered over the empty space, you may be able to copy a larger onto a smaller partition.
Do you still have the original backups? If so, assuming they were each used exclusively for TM, had TM begun deleting old backups?
If so, and if the new drive can be partitioned into 2 partitions each at least as large as the old disks, try it again. Be sure to check the *Erase Destination* box; you cannot copy them properly without that.

  • Exchange 2003 - Backup / Restore

    Hi all,
I have inherited an exchange 2003 server (I know it is EOL, but stuck with it for now) I have had a situation were there are 4 mailbox stores on a storage group and the HQ office has requested a mailbox restore from a year ago. There is a third party backup
software which runs a full backup nightly onto tape, fortunately there are monthly tapes and I have located the relevant tape.
I recently ran a restore onto the recovery storage group of the mailbox store which I believe had required mailbox, however I set the restore job not to auto mount it, after the backup completed I got the following error in the application log when I tried
to mount the mailstore in the RSG, eventid 619 source ESE.
I have located a microsoft article that explains that the restore did not complete a hard recovery and this can be performed using the eseutil with the /cc switch. I have looked at the following articles in regards to using the /cc switch (hard recovery)
My query is as follows: the restored job copied the .edb and .stm files to a single location on the data drive and then the log files are on the same drive but a different folder called temp. In this folder there are 10 E00.log files and 1 restore.env file,
also this server has 3 other storage groups each with 4 mailbox stores. Obviously one of these is the one in the RSG. If I run the eseutil /cc command against restore.env will this only replay the logs from the same directory. For example eseutil /cc d:\restore\temp
The restore.env and E00.logs are in the temp directory and the edb and stm are in d:\restore\mailstore, I just want to ensure the the E00.log files from live mailstores does not get effected.

    Hi,
As you know, after April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, offer free or paid support options, or update online content such as KB articles for Exchange Server 2003. Online content may remain available as long as Exchange 2003
remains in the Self-Help online support phase.
Companies running Exchange 2003 after April 8, 2014 will be responsible for their own for support. More importantly, because Microsoft will no longer provide security updates, companies that choose to continue running Exchange 2003 accept the risk associated
    with that.
    Best regards,
Regards, Please mark it as an answer if it really helps you.

  • Steps to restore a failed exchange server 2003

If I have a recently taken full backup of my failed server what are the steps to restore it.
I mean, After installing OS, then may I have to create the domain or restoring full backup creates domain automatically?

    Hi,
Firstly, I’d like to explain, if you want install the Exchange server on the server you have installed OS, I recommend you just add the server into domain and create the domain on another server. Because it’s not recommended to install Exchange sever on
