[SOLVED] Garbled sound in Skype with particular microphone

I've been using my Turtle Beach headset painlessly with Skype and Arch for months. Yesterday, a friend told me that he couldn't understand a word I was saying over voice chat, so I performed a test call, and my sound input was being sent in double speed with very poor quality.
I tested with some other applications (Mumble and recordMyDesktop), and the sound came through just fine. Today, I did another test call, and switched to my laptop's built-in mic, and there was no sound problem.
I use PulseAudio and ALSA to manage my sound. This mic and Skype have played nice up until just recently, and I can't put my finger on what could be going wrong. It's only this application with this particular input device.
Any ideas?

Not sure what the problem is yet, just wanted to give a "me too" post so you know that you're not alone.
The headset I'm having problems with is a Microsoft LifeChat LX-2000.
EDIT: Let's try and get to the cause of the issue.
I've tried a regular microphone on the line-in port in my soundcard, that works ok.
So I'm guessing it's USB driver related? Is your headset on a USB port or does it use the mic/line-ic port on your PC?
I've also tried plugging it into USB2 instead of USB3, same thing.

  • [SOLVED] No sound in skype nor grooveshark but in phonon

    I am stuck with this problem. I've tried it all without success.. (arch forums, google, ...)
    I have snd-had-intel installed and in phonon (KDE) i can hear the sound. However, if I open grooveshark or skype, there is no sound. The most strange is that it actually worked several days before..

    I've solved the issue uninstalling pulseaudio and instaling OSS. Now all is going flawlessly

  • [Solved] No sound in Skype 4.3

    I am aware that Skype 4.3 requires pulseaudio, as much as I dislike pulse, skype is one of the main functions of my laptop to begin with so I decided to bite the bullet.
    I installed pulseaudio and pulseaudio-alsa, lib32-libpulse and lib32-alsa-plugins from the official repositories, configured pulse with pavucontrol and other programs are working (being Teamspeak 3 and Chromium)
    Skypes "Sound Devices" settings seems to be detecting pulse properly (mic, speakers and ringing is all set to "PulseAudio server (local)") but no sound comes from skype when I try to make a test sound (nor when I first launch it)
    Pavucontrol does not detect Skype as a sound application when it is running. (Neither recording nor playback)
    What could be the problem?
    Last edited by rabcor (2014-06-27 00:14:22)

    Fixed it, silly me.
    Pulseaudio doesn't pick up Skype as a sound application except for the moments where it is delivering sound (i.e. when I click the make test sound button, it will show skype in the playback list until the sound ends)
    Pulseaudio also doesn't seem to have any reliable way of selecting a default device as far as I can tell (and skype didn't let me do this either) I have a headset and intergrated speakers, what was happening was that skype insisted on using the headset for sound (I assume this happened because the headphones mic was the default mic)
    It is strange how chromium and teamspeak (both set to use pulse's default devices) correctly used the intergrated speaker and the headphone mic like I wanted whereas skype did not. That's why I hate pulse I guess.
    The fix for me in this case was to reconfigure (in pavucontrol) the headphones to "Analog Mono Input" rather than "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input".

  • [SOLVED] No sound on SPDIF with Intel ICH10 Sound Card

    Hi everyone,
    I'm coming from Fedora 12 and recently got a fresh installed Archlinux. I'm very satisfied by the distribution and everything works just as expect for the moment, except one thing : SPDIF output of my sound card.
    I installed the following packages :
    $ pacman -Qs alsa
    local/alsa-firmware 1.0.20-2
    ALSA firmware package
    local/alsa-lib 1.0.22-1

    The following command :
    $ aplay -D front:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 tmp/Norrlanda.wav
    gives me sound on the analog (HP) output but this one :
    $ aplay -D iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 tmp/Norrlanda.wav
    gives absolutly nothing (I tested the HDMI output and it's fully functionnal).
    I unmuted everything that could be unmuted on alsamixer and tested varied combo of options snd_hda_intel model=XXXX (as I read that those type of card can have issue of this kind). I try to delete the /etc/asound.state file, various configuration in /etc/asound.conf. But nothing.
    In last resort, I rebooted on a F12 LiveCD and there… everything works fine ! The SPDIF output works just great, without any manipulation (with the same command as above). I tried to import the configuration of /etc/alsa, /etc/pulse and /etc/modprobe.d from this F12 LiveCD (looking if there was any special options about sound card I can just copy/paste to Archlinux) but this failed one more time.
    I really really don't see what I can do to solve this problem (and I already spend 2 entire days on this issue without any result… frustrating). So if someone's got a solution or suggestion (some configurations I can try) on this issue, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thx to jonnor on the IRC Archlinux Channel, it works now !!
    For everyone experiencing the same problem with DG45 intel sound card (Codec: IDT 92HD73E1X5 to be accurate), the documented module is not the right one. Use model=no-jd if you want to have the SPDIF output functionnal.

  • No sound using skype with an ipad

    I hope you can help.  I am using an ipad with skype making a video call.  The person I am calling can see and hear me, but I can not hear them.  How can I fix this issue?

    No it's still there.  It's coming from my iMac speakers only on the windows side.  But if I play music through YouTube I hear the music through the headphone jack external speakers.  But that **** sound won't go away.  Did a repair lost all my sounds again.  Just did another repair and that sound came back.
    I went into sounds and turned them off and the sound went away...I listened to every sound there before I turned it off and none of them sounded like the sound I was getting.  At least I can still hear my music through external speakers.  I'm totally confused.  Hopefully you'll have more for me?
        Thanks Jerry

  • [solved] no sound when booting with webcam attached

    Hi everybody,
    hopefully this is the right section to post since I'm not quite sure if the problem is related to KDE or a general hardware thing. ;-)
    Anyway, the problem that I have is that I don't have any sound at all when booting my system while my webcam, a logitech 9000 pro, is attached to the USB port.
    Even when unplugging the webcam afterwards the sound does not work. I need to reboot my system first with the webcam detached and than it'll work again. I also did already manually insert the modules in /etc/rc.conf but no change. Every time it seems that the webcams audio interface will be recognized as the primary audio device.
    When not having the camera plugged in and plugging it in while KDE is up, everything works like a charm.
    But of course it bothers me quite big time to unplug the webcam every time after using it and rebooting the system again after I forgot to unplug it.
    I also checked for other modules to be loaded automatically (compared the output of lsmod before and after plugging in the webcam) but there was no change.
    So does anyone have an idea what to do in order to get the order of the audio devices right?
    Thank you!...

    In your /etc/rc.d/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf try to put zero index for your audio driver, so it will load first. In my case it's this line:
    options snd-hda-intel index=0

  • [Solved] No sound (using Gnome with Pulseaudio)

    Hello,
    I have an issue with my audio. Since yesterday it has not been working, as in no sound in my headphones
    I updated gnome, cinnamon and linux yesterday. I did not however update pulseaudio or anything else alsa related (as far as I can tell).
    Another possible cause could be switching from cinnamon to gnome which I did yesterday (I don't know when exactly my audio stopped working).
    Other relevant facts:
    -My mic is still working fine
    -Using the Xonar DG sound card
    -Nothing is muted in alsamixer
    -not a hardware issue, working fine in dual boot windows
    Pulse audio in verbose mode suggest that the issue is not pulseaudio (as does pavucontrol's visualization):

    My best guess at this point is that something(tm) is wrong with alsa. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this though. Any advice?
    Please let me know if anything important is missing.

    Did you ever have a copy of front channels or a mix of all of them played on the headphone jack with alsa only? I doubt it. If you kill pulseaudio and run following, what channels do you hear from headphones?
    speaker-test -c 8 -t wav -D plughw:DG,0
    This is probably more of a pulseaudio issue, since alsa usually does not copy streams.
    InfamousBlue wrote:I did not however update pulseaudio or anything else alsa related (as far as I can tell).
    Partial upgrades are not supported. There are some remapping examples on the wiki. If you seek a hardware remapping solution try hdajackretask from alsa-tools, it works however for hda compliant cards.

    When playing any kind of sound, my headphones work, but the internal speakers are silent. In alsamixer both Headphone and Speaker are unmuted. So far I made a ~/.asoundrc file, so the HDMI device wont be the default.

    After reading the wiki, and looking at tihs I tried setting the model in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf to laptop, and to ideapad, but none of them worked. Is it only the matter of getting the model right, or is something else wrong?

    I found that Auto-Mute Mode was enabled and my headphones where plugged in all the time, disableing it solved the problem.

  • [SOLVED] No sound only in Skype?

    I have sound working on my system completely, sans Skype. I did not have PulseAudio installed when I installed Skype, yet Skype somehow put "PulseAudio Server (local)" in audio settings. Installing pulseaudio didn't really help - pavucontrol doesn't see my card for whatever reason.
    Help?
    Ninja edit: I did try this:
    echo "autospawn = no" > ~/.pulse/client.conf
    no luck
    Edit2: the above command helped, I just forgot to run killall pulseaudio. Sorry for wasting database space
    Last edited by Deusdies (2011-04-11 22:09:34)

    Actually I don't consider this solved since after rebooting, the solution doesn't work (unless you kill pulseaudio again). It's a bit of a hassle to kill pulseaudio after each reboot. Especially when I use pulseaudio for other things while using skype. Currently I have no sound in skype after configuring pulseaudio from the wiki. Other software works fine under pulse except skype. I am running Arch x86_64 and I have installed skype from multilib, lib32-libpulse and other required packages listed in the wiki. As mentioned before the topic solution works but is tedious. If anyone knows a way to get skype fully working with pulseaudio under Arch x86_64; please let me know. Thanks

  • Skype says i have a problem with my microphone

    Hi,
    So i bought my first laptop computer and it came with windows 8. At first i said oh w8 looks really neat but after less than a minute i was already hating it. The fact that i cant turn off all this redesigned UI's is really annoying. So i tried to use skype, when i call or receive a call and i answer it, the call gets terminated immediately and skype that " there has been a problem with my microphone ". That is, my mic that is built in the pc.
    If i use mumble teamspeak or even audacity, i can record and use the mic without problems, so its not a hardware problem, its just this crappy software. In my audio settings i have " Microphone (Realtek HD Audio)" selected.
    As if this vomiting minimalistic design wasnt enough, i have to deal with configuration problems that programs that are 5 mb (audacity ) dont have.
    Terrific job.

    Owkey i had the same problem with my computer but i will explain now to you step for step how to solve this and its pretty easy.
    NOTE: this is for the winsdows 8 version not desktop. Yust saying.
    Step 1: Launch Skype in the winsdows 8.
    Step 2: press the flag buttom on you keyboard with the C combined.
    Step 3: Click on settings.
    Step 4: Click on permissions.
    You will see a smal bar that will allouw you to activate is de-activate anny hardware tools from skype.
    Step 5: Make sure webcame and microphone on ON.
    Step 6: Call friends and have a good time
    Hope you can use this to enjoy your Skype experience.
    Yours sincerely,
    Chris Nubcake

  • High pitched sound - something to do with internal microphone ??

    Suddenly my Powerbook has started emitting a high pitched sound through its speakers. You know one of those high frequency ear-blowing sounds when a PA system is being set up and the mic is getting tested and the amp's turned up too loud?
    I'm not sure exactly what I was doing when it started, but I think I was making or receiving a telephony call via iChat. During or just after the connection process (which didn't work for some reason but that could've been a problem at the other end), this high pitched squeal started. I can get rid of it by turning down the output volume - the squeal disappears but that of course turns all other output sound down as well. The sound disappears when the volume is turned down about half way.
    But...even if the sound is turned down half way, if I put my hand over the left speaker, the sound comes back. No sound comes back if I place hand over right speaker. I assume then that the inbuilt microphone is under the left speaker area, and this has something to do with the inbuilt mic.
    The only other thing that's happened in recent times is that I used this Powerbook's audio line-in port to record some sound from an audio casette recently. I used Audio Recorder 2.0 for this. I can't imagine this has been the cause, but thought I'd better mention it. If I go into the Sound Preference panel, I can stop the squeal by changing the sound input device from internal microphone to Line In.
    Anyone have a clue as to why this is happening and how iit can be fixed?
    Many thanks, Steven

    Hey, great suggestion Burn. It prompted me to look at iChat preferences, since that was the only application that I've had open which might engage the internal microphone.
    Within iChat Preferences, I clicked on the 'Video' icon, and for the 'Microphone' setting I saw that 'None selected' (or something like that - that option has gone now?) was in place. So I changed the setting to Internal Microphone. The whistle or screech was still there. Then I changed the setting to 'Line In'. No more screech!!
    A good result, but is this the way it's supposed to be? Does having the setting as 'Line In' mean that I have to plug headphones in whenever I want to use iChat for internet telephony? Unless I manually change to Internal Microphone, but then I suffer screeching again?
    Cheers, Steven

  • Reports of 17.0.0.169 with garbled sound and vid on rtmp streaming w/jwplayer?

    Hello Adobe,
    I run a website that uses live streaming rtmp to the jwplayer6 video player.  Starting today, some viewers who downloaded Adobe Flash player 17.0.0.169 are getting very garbled sound and video that speeds up/slows down.  This is happening on a number of users on various platforms: Win 7, Win 8.1, Linux and various browsers; Firefox, Safari, Opera, and IE (reported so far).  Some folks are reporting it happens only on Firefox and not Chrome.  Thoughts?  How to proceed?  We are telling our users, unfortunately, uninstall the latest version of Flash and rollback.
    Frank P.

    Hi Jeromie,
    I'm and end user getting disastrous garbling and speeding via Ustream Streams.One broadcaster I watch was able to almost elimate the issue by reducing the quality of the outgoing content I believe.  It would be beneficial if you contacted Ustream yourself so they can notify their subscribers of a work around.

    Hi Simon,
    I'm really sorry to hear that your event may be impacted.  I'd highly recommend that you reach out to Ustream.  We would be more than happy to share technical details with them on how to configure the streams to work around the issue.  We will have a public beta available for download before your event at http://www.adobe.com/go/flashplayerbeta/, but realize that this is a sub-optimal solution.
    Ustream employees can send me a private message via the forums (just click my name), and I'll be more than happy to put them in contact with an engineer that can offer guidance.
    Thanks,
    Jeromie

  • [SOLVED] No Sound in Gnome - Problem with GStreamer?

    I've been using other distros for awhile, but this is my first time with Arch. Spent most of the morning getting it setup and now I'm pretty much done except getting sound to work I believe.
    So, not sure what info I should give troubleshooting wise, please ask if anything else is required. Alsa detects it fine, but gstreamer gives me the following error:
    No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
    Last edited by kryptobs2000 (2010-07-10 17:33:01)

    Just tryed playing a wav with aplay and it didn't give me any errors, but I didn't hear anything if that helps anymore. Running a amixer set MASTER 70% unmute also gives me the unable to find simple control 'MASTER',0 error too, though I can change the volume fine with alsamixer so I'm not sure why that is. The correct module is loaded (snd-hda-intel). Otherwise I'm at a complete loss.
    edit: amixer set MASTER 70% gives me the same error on an ubuntu livecd where sound does work so that seems normal. I don't know what changed, but I can now open the volume control so the gstreamer error goes away, however I still can't get any sound, be it with aplay or something else. I'm starting to think the solution may be to pass on arch and move to something better.

  • [SOLVED] No sound with Chromium, libpepflashplayer problem.

    Hi,
    I had problem with no sound in Chromium when using the flashplayer, but it all worked in Firefox.
    The problem was the chromium-pepper-flash player that I used as described in the Wiki.
    with that player I get following message when starting Chromium:
    ALSA lib setup.c:565:(add_elem) Cannot obtain info for CTL elem (MIXER,'Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack',0,0,0): No such file or directory
    But if I use:
    Shockwave Flash
    Version:    11.2 r202
    Location:    /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
    Type:    NPAPI
    I got sound ok, unfortunately the player crach much more often, something that was the reason I changed to  chromium-pepper-flash player
    Any ides why I do not get sound in Chromium with chromium-pepper-flash player?
    Best regards.

    To share my findings.
    The problem was a the settings in asound.conf.
    My old "asound.conf."
    # conver alsa API over jack API
    # use it with
    # % aplay foo.wav
    # use this as default
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave { pcm "jack" }
    ctl.mixer0 {
    type hw
    card 1
    # pcm type jack
    pcm.jack {
    type jack
    playback_ports {
    0 system:playback_1
    1 system:playback_2
    capture_ports {
    0 system:capture_1
    1 system:capture_2
    Left since I was playing around wirh PureData and Jack.
    All my outher audio apps like mpd, xbmc worked just finde with this one but not libpepflashplayer.
    My new asound.conf
    # use this as default
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 0
    ctl.mixer0 {
    type hw
    card 0
    With the new one also libpepflashplayer works OK.
    Using libflashplayer was a very bad option for me because it crash so often. libpepflashplayer much more stable for me.
    All the best.

  • [Solved] No sound with a nVidia MCP51 High Definition Audio

    Hello,
    The sound doesn't work with my nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio sound card. I've installed the packages alsa-utils and alsa-oss.
    $ lspci | grep Audio
    00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
    $ aplay -l

    If I try alsaconf:
    No supported PnP or PCI card found.
    The sound works natively with Ubuntu. I use Archlinux 64 bits.
    Thanks in advance

    Are you using the nouveau (open source nvidia) driver? If yes, it seems that HDMI is not yet implemented: http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix
