[Solved] GE60 OND GPU fan issue

Please, for the love of anything holy, someone help me get this fixed, it's making me lose my mind.
Like dozens upon dozens of other people, I have the fan issue where it stops and speeds up every 10 seconds or so. The only time it doesn't do this is if I hit the fan button for 100% fan or if I start up a game that requires the fan to be used. If that's not happening, it's silence followed by a speed-up followed by silence, repeat. It's making me go insane.
I flashed my bios to the latest version.
I can NOT flash the EC firmware and the instructions on MSI support tell me to do something that doesn't exist. The zip I download has 3 files, none of which do anything. The win flash file doesn't exist. I contacted MSI support and just get automated crap responses.
I tried downloading MSI afterburner but naturally, the bios doesn't allow for fan adjustment. Thanks MSI!
If anyone has any idea on how to make this stop, please, please, please help me out. I've seen the youtube video with 16,000 views of the guy having the same problem so I'm not alone. I just use Windows 8 so the fixes don't seem to apply. Thanks ahead of time. I'm currently in Afghanistan so I'm probably 12 hours ahead of most people here but I'll keep checking this thread looking for answers. I appreciate it.

Followed the instructions with the DOS flash for EC firmware. The computer has now been running for 10 minutes without WRRRRRRRR........WRRRRRRRRRR.........WR RRRRRRRRRR.
It's amazing so far, I hope it lasts. It's peace on my ears and sanity and, hopefully, I won't have to shut down the computer every time I leave the room in fear the fan will rattle out of control again and break something. On another note, have you guys talked to MSI about putting those instructions right on their EC firmware support page instead of the WRONG instructions they have listed right now?
Also, the fan controls that Syre had still won't download. (hopefully not needed anymore) Maybe it's an issue with the internet here but it always cuts off about 2/3 of the way into it.
Thanks for the help everyone. I'll be back bitching/moaning if the problem starts up again but hopefully that won't happen.

    MSI GT70 2PC-1044US - HDMI / GPU / FAN issues
I am having trouble with my HDMI port on a brand new MSI GT70 2PC-1044US . Whenever I plug my HDMI cable from my notebook to the TV, after a few minutes (5 - 20 minutes), my fan will start reving at around 5k RPMs and sounds like a jet engine. When this happens, according to MSI Dragon Gaming Center tool/monitor, the GPU temp reading hits 255 degrees Celsius, which is clearly a glitch. I used another monitor, msi afterburner, and when this HDMI problem happens, this tool reads a normal 40 degrees Celsius.
Here are the things I have tried so far but the problem keeps reoccurring:
    1. Called MSI tech support, sent me the link to the newest BIOS and updated it
    2. Called MSI tech support again, claimed the HDMI is controlled by the intel graphic controller, and they recommended that i update intel drivers (every software tool on my notebook says it's the NVIDIA GPU that controls the HDMI port /shrug???), so i did this as well.
    3. Called MSI teck support again, they suggested I send the notebook back to MSI so they could take a look at the hardware. I did not do this because I did not trust the tech guy and did not want to wait a few weeks to get my notebook back
    4. Luckily, the store I bought my notebook at was nice enough to replace my notebook for a new one. I got home, tested it, and the same thing happened. So I think we eliminated faulty hardware.
So now what? What else can I try?

have you done EC reset? https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/how-to-reset-the-ec-embedded-controller
can you try to plug the HDMI into your dell screen[insteal of sharp TV] to check if the same issue will hapends?
Install latest Intel GPU drivers from: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphics
    then retest
-Yes, I did the full EC reset. Once the EC flash was done, I removed the power cord from the back and the battery and let it sit for a few minutes before restarting.
    - My Dell monitor is old, and does not have an HDMI port, but I will try a different cable on a different TV.
-I already have the most recent intel graphic controller drivers, this one of the things the MSI tech support guys asked me to do by phone

  • MSI GE60 0ND infamous fan issue

    Hello,
I have a GE60 0ND and I'm encountering the fan issue where the fan keeps starting and stopping even when the computer is idle. It is becoming infuriating and I want to make this stop.
Reading about the issue I gathered that I had to update the firmware. So I did, using a bootable key set up with rufus.akeo.ie tool, and then after booting on it calling ecall.bat. I did the procedure not to mess up EC (removing battery and charger, waiting 10mn before booting). I then checked the FW version from the BIOS system info and it reads
    Bios Version: E16GAIMS.10E
    EC Version: 16GAEMS1 Ver4.05
So yay, I guess? But the fan keeps spinning up and down as it did before. Should I update the BIOS to 10F as well? How should I proceed not to mess my notebook up?

Okay so I suppose there is some kind of transition here... My computer doesn't do his fan weirdness while idle anymore a few minutes after startup (it kind of does some weird clipping (?) sound at time but I'll probably just have to clean the fan). Sorry for the inconvenience, the info on this forum in invaluable.
Yes, that's my point to wait it for 15 minutes
Because from my personal experience it makes the same thing several times in the past
and it fixed by his own few minutes later and then was fine
so i suspect its some kind of checking/or cleaning FAN mechanism like you said sometimes after startup
but what triggers this behavior is not known
from my experience its rare but can hapend sometimes

its not because of dust, it does this at new machine and year later i've checked the FAN multiple times and it's in perfect conditions
but haven't notice this issues from 7-8 months
but of course open the NB to check your FAN to check it!
    this is always helpfull

  • Month Owned MSI GE60 Apache Pro Fan Issues

    Hi everyone,
I have had my MSI GE60 Apachce Pro 15" laptop for a little over a month now.
For the first month, I could barely hear the fans when leaving the laptop idle or using non-power hungry applications that do not involve gaming, such as browsing the web or watching videos. Now, however,  the fan seems to always be running at a medium intensity, even when idle. As soon as I boot up the laptop, the fan is much more noisy than it used to be and stays that way.
The program HWinfo64 shows my CPU temperature at usually 41 degrees Celsius. Moreover, turning on the Cooler Blaster feature does not decrease the advertised 5-10% temperatures either. In fact, it increases the heat to around 42-43 degrees Celsius.
My desk is usually completely dust free, so I do not think dust is the issue here. I will have to open up the back to be completely sure, but I do not want to void my warranty for something as silly as cleaning it out (There is a void sticker right above one of the necessary screws to remove the back casing. I will contact MSI to inquire about this because I read that MSI will allow owners to remove this sticker in certain locations without voiding the warranty).
Could there be any other reason besides dust that could make my fans this noisy? Does anyone have suggestions on improving it? Thank you.

Try to remove battery and hold power button for 5 sec.
I tried that a few times, but it did not work. The fan noise is becoming unbearable tbh. Considering selling it now :/

  • Fan issues galore

So (i'm not sure of the name of the fan) the fan that is on the face of the tower with the internal speaker attached to it...went nuts and I could not get it to stop. I was told to change out the PRAM battery. I did that. Still an issue. I was told to do a clean install of leopard. Did it. Still didn't solve the problem. Out of frustration, I unplugged that fan from the motherboard and now my hard drive fan is going nuts. All of my temps are normal, nothing above 50 degrees F. Do I just need a new fan or is there something i'm missing?

I was having fan speed issues and reinstalling the drivers for my graphics card (ATI x1900 and ATI Display utility) and restarting has apparently fixed it. I had noticed my OpenGL graphics weren't running properly and the 'Flurry' screen saver was choppy, as well as issues with DVD playback (error -70017). I was trying to fix those problems and it ended up solving them and the fan issue as well.
So maybe try reinstalling your graphics drivers and rebooting. Might be worth a try. Hope this helps.

    Specs:
    MSI GE60 OND
    CPU: Intel i7-3610QM
    Memory: 8gb
    discrete graphics: nvidia 660m
    OS: Windows 7 ultimate 64bit
Was having issues with laptop, i reformatted and updated all the drivers. still did not fix.
    The issue:
When playing games (tested on BL2, CSGO, The Forest, TF2) with the 660m it runs fine for about 5min then starts to freeze/stutter (both sound and video).  The FPS drops from around 120+ to around 20 for about 30seconds then snaps back to 120+ for another 30, then repeats.  This does not happen when using the integrated video.  Temps are staying in the 40-70c range.
    Thanks in advance!

  • MSI GE60 0ND - Fan Issue - Cooler Boost Button

    Hello,
I have a problem with my MSI GE60 0ND. The fan / cooler boost button above the keyboard is always glowing and sometimes very light flickering. The fan spins at a normal and quiet level.
When I press the button the fan starts spinning up and stays at the high level. The ligt of the button keeps glowing, but the flickering stops completly. When I press it again the fan goes back to a normal level, but the light keeps glowing.
I recently updates the EC-Version, because I had an issue with my fan which was really annoying. Before the EC update my fan kept spinning up and down every 10-20 seconds.
The temperatures ware always at a normal level. I own my MSI GE60 about one year. The spinning fan issue started just one month ago, but was fixed trough the update.
Some detailed information about my notebook:
    MSI GE60 0ND
    Bios: E16GAIMS.10F (Release version)
    EC-Version: 16GAEMS1 Ver4.05
I'm using Windows 7 x64 and tried also Windows 8.1 x64. Both have the same fan button issue.
Installing / Uninstalling MSI SCM utility didnt make any difference.
    Regards
    Thomas

fan is constantly spinning with the same, average speed. It goes faster when on stress but continue to spin when system is idle
    Bios Version: E16GAIMS.10F
    EC Version: 16GAEMS1 Ver4.05
Sorry to spoil that, but the fan was indeed always spinning before, too. But very quietly at a low rate! You could observe rotational speed in RWeverything and it did NEVER stop with that notebook (GE60) and the EC-version 14.04
If you want to go back, check out my post here. There are the old firmware files included as well. But read the readme.txt thoroughly first!

  • BIOS UPDATE for GE 60 - GE70 0ND (GPU BOOST ISSUE)

I and some of my friends have GPU boost issue with MSI GE60 and GE70 0ND ... (GTX 660M) in TURKEY
We also have a forum for this issue and number of members increases day by day.
We have E16GAIMS.513 BIOS in our notebooks.
One of our friends sent his laptop to technical service and they downloaded newer BIOS 514 (WIN8)and this GPU issue is solved.
However, since there is no update for 514 BIOS in download tab, we cannot update our BIOS and GPU issue continues.
Can you upload this newer 514 BIOS update to download tab as soon as possible.
We are expecting your positive answers.

Quote from: pshywar on 30-March-13, 04:35:40
I think we should wait that this update is uploaded to main website in order to prevent some compatibility or etc issues.
BIOS update is a important issue and it can causes irrecoverable problems. So, we continue to wait
That's a good point; while I got back I was thinking of flashing it but had a re-read of the step-by-step guide before doing so and thought otherwise. Best wait for the official one, that is if they release it.
I'm also going to contact the customer service support to have this included in their download section. I made enough noise for them to update the HD Audio drivers, so here's to this getting the inclusion as well.
Quote from: Prema on 30-March-13, 05:59:24
It was a test, they may never publish it...
But they included the latest BIOS in the Topic Creator's friend's Notebook. Hopefully, if enough noise is made, they will publish it.

Here's my thoughts. And you probably won't like them.
Try upgrading using that BIOS. What's the worst that could happen? You brick your machine? Make sure everything is backed up, and try it. You want the VBIOS portion fixed so it boosts? Well.....try that BIOS. And if it doesn't work or bricks the machine, you'll need to send it back anyway and they will probably load the BIOS on it then anyway.......
Either way, it's a win (albeit, in 1 situation it might take a few weeks....). You'll get what you want.
    I obviously can't try it as I don't have a GE60.....
I think it might be best to just wait for the official one, as the warranty services in Australia are absolutely poops, be it any make or brand - most companies are not obligated to have the customer's best interest at heart, so if they can get away with voiding it, they will -  so I'm not too keen to test this unofficial one lest it affects my warranty.
Thanks for your input though, nonetheless, darkhawk.

  • Has the T430 fan issue been fixed?

    Hello all,
I am thinking of selling my Macbook Pro and getting a T430, but I am a little concerned with the fan issue being reported here in the forums. Has the problem been fixed in the newer models? Thanks in advance for your reply.

I'm in the same situation, a year ago I purchased a T420 and I was very pleased as the notebook was very quietly most of the time. My notebook was stolen a week ago () and I'm looking for a replacement. As I understand not everybody is suffering this problem of whining fan,  have any idea  if this problem could be associated to only some particular models??. For example, this problem affects both the models with integrated & dedicated graphics (as far as I understand the dedicated GPU can generate lots of extra heat inside the machine that needs to be dissipated)??
    Best Regards

  • [SOLVED] My nvidia GPU is stupid

I have a Nvidia GeForce 9800GT which after a min or two after the boot, will run its fan crazy for no reason at all. I use awesome WM and nothing gpu hungry.
The temperature is @59-60C. I just manually set the speed to 50% and the temp is @60-61, so no reason to run at 75% and make such noise.
My question is if there is any option or program to enable smart GPU fan control, or if it is ok (will it damage my card?) to run my own script (it will get the temp and apply the speed accordingly with a daemon)
Last edited by ttouch (2013-07-20 20:35:35)

    ttouch,
I have one of these cards on my machine & have not seen this behaviour. Mine runs at 50°C +/- 5 with a fan speed of 1200 to 1300rpm +/- some.
Can you please post up some more info such as; do you use the nouveau driver or the nvidia? Are you on a x64 or a x32 system? When did this behaviour start?, after a driver update? Is this reproducible using a "live" CD or USB?
On the hardware side, have you cleaned out the GPU's heat sink & fan? Have you checked that the GPU & it's heat sink are seated correctly? Have you checked the condition of the thermal paste? Does your case have adequate ventilation?
It would be better to find the cause & solve that rather than try to override the cards onboard fan control.

  • Satellite Pro P100 GPU Fan off or full speed after Bios-update to 4.20

    Hello,
after installing the brandnew Bios-update 4.20 the GPU fan is when the notebook is cool off. While working with it the GPU temperature rises up to 100C (very very hot), then the fan begins to run on medium speed and the GPU cools down. After a restart, eg. next day, the fan always runs on medium or high speed (very noisy!!). With the the bios version before this problem didn't appear.
Has someone the same problem with his notebook?
Did anyone have the Bios-update before 4.20 and can send it to me???
    Greets
    Rommulaner

    Hi all,
I've got a similar problem. After updating the BIOS of my SP P100 (PSPAHE) to 4.2 on of the fans runs constantly. I was very astonished about the WinPhlash Software anyway: I just wanted to see what it looks like, and it started updating BIOS virus-like automatically without any message or confirmation etc.
With the first reboot I got a bluescreen immediately after Vista started booting. With the following reboot, the system started properly - everything seemed to be ok. Since then the system obviously can't control the fan anymore.
The bluescreen-error is reproduceable - it occurs after each trial. I already tried to update BIOS with a freshly installed Vista (Recovery DVD) bfore installing a single problem - same result.
I only see 2 possibilities to perhaps solve the problem: hopefully a re-downgrade to 4.0 can successfully be done. Second possibility would perhaps be to remove Vista and install XP instead hoping that the BIOS update doesn't hang up then.
Unfortunately, the previous BIOS version is not on the support pages. . If anyone gets hold of it pls. post here.

  • GTX 680 Lightning Fan issue / noise

    Hi
So I've had my 680 Lightning for just over a year now and it's been working great with no issues at all, until i cleaned it. It needed a clean since it had a nice layer of dust on the heat-sinks. For starters who ever designed the card so you can't take the case off without taking the whole GPU cooler off isn't that smart,  it's a very badly designed since i can't clean the fan without voiding my warranty. ( Yes i know the fans spin up backwards to remove the dust on the GPU but over time you will still get a build up of dust on the heat-sink that needs to be removed )
Ok the issues is, when i was trying to remove the dust ( using a vacuum cleaner ) from one of the fans the plastic bit that is connected to the fan it self that holds the wires down broke, it's not causing any issues as the wires are not hitting the fans, i made sure of this. The real issue is that the other fan is making a high pitch noise / whine of sorts and it's driving me nuts( after cleaning ), the fans where very silent before the clean.
So where do i go from here? Is MSI willing to replace the fans? This issue would of never happened if i could of just taken the damn cover off in the 1st place since your fans going reverse on start up doesn't remove enough dust to not warrant a clean every once in a while.
Sorry if i sound :censored:ed but i paid over $630 Australian at the time when i bought it, it was marketed as an higher range card with the price to match it and for a higher range card one would expect to  be able to clean it when it needs.
I've used vacuum cleaners all my life to clean Case fans, GPU fans and CPU fans and never had an issue until now.

Fans or other spare parts aren't sold separately. If your vga is still covered by warranty contact MSI if seller refuses rma: >>How to contact MSI.<<
That of course means the vga needs to be rma'ed. Alternatively you can use an aftermarket cooler like Alpenfoehn Peter, Prolimatech MK26 or Accelero Xtreme III

  • GTX 970 Fan Issue Part Two

    Hello,
i am new to the forum but i followed the first threat every day since my MSI 970 GTX Card has the issue with the fans (one is at 100% and one does not move)
I found that the threat is closed, i think that this is a shame.  I want to quote:
    "Nichrome"
    Enough of flaming on MSI
    >>Please read and comply with the Forum Rules.<<
If you have an issue mentioned in this topic with your 970 or 980, RMA it. (My word, RMA is a simple way, who pays me as i cannot use the pc in this time ??)
If you can't understand that MSI is unable (or was) to reproduce the issue, then we can't do anything about it. Also note that MSI has lots of different things to do, not just fixing 970 fan issue.
Any updates will be posted by Mods/Admins here.----End of quote."
WOW !!!!  MSI has a lot different things to do ?
And what, please ? The GTX970 is as new as a card could be. And MSI has different things to do as fixing errors ? WHAT ????????????? WHAT HAS MSI TO DO ???
I think you must be kidding. I am sorry that my first post is full of angry but if MSI has other things to do as fixing an error from a brand new product, what for the heck are these things ???? (fixing errors on a Geforce 8800 or else, oh yeah, that is really important !!)
I have contact with my reseller and i will get ( i hope still 2014 ) a new card, hopefully without errors.
But the statemant of MSI is, simple to say, not enough.

    Very upsetting?
Explain me one thing: how can you fix something if it's not broken? If they can't get the issue, then they can't investigate. Please stop behaving like you're 5 years old that don't understand a thing. Unless you are 5 years old, then it seems that your parents should speak to us or MSI instead of you.
That's not nice is it.  Yes he might be being a little melodramatic.  But to then insult him by calling him a child?  You should not be insulting people.  Whether this is a user to user forum or not, the forum uses the MSI brand which should encourage even more so a kinder approach to customers using the forum.  In my humble opinion of course.
Customers are unhappy.  It would be wise to note that the reaction of MSI, this forum, the fan troubles are all being widely discussed and documented all over the web.  MSI's reputation is not always being viewed in a good light.  Surely we should be trying to mindful and where possible improve that.
Also, the view that in some shape or form its the customers fault for buying hardware early isn't one I share, nor should it imo be viewed as acceptable.  I have always bought early release gpu's and never had any issue in the past 20 years from a hardware perspective.  I will freely admit that these 2 x 980's of mine are my very first purchases of MSI though.
I actually quite like my MSI 980's, though it is looking likely that they may require a vbios update to rectify the fan spin up issue being currently investigated by Nvidia.  It would have been nice to know that this was being investigated by MSI too.  Is that enough to put me off MSI again?  Not really.  But my perception of MSI has changed and think things could be handled better.
TL;DR  MSI could do better at maintaining customer relations.
