[solved] gnome 3.2.1-1/gdm 3.2.1.1-1 - gnome-keyring password!

Hi guys,
I have some trouble using the 'Online Accounts' feature of Gnome Shell.
When I log into my Google account, I'm asked to grant access to my contacts, docs and so on for Gnome. The problem is that I'm prompted to type my Gnome Keyring password (I thought it was automatically unlocked when logging through GDM) but my user password doesn't work! I even tried to enter my root password but it doesn't work either.
Am I missing something here?
Thanks

I've already tried but I have the same problem: since I don't know the current password, I can't change it.

  • [SOLVED!]I'd like to add a dedicated Gnome-Shell session entry to GDM.

    Edit:
    Well, thanks for all your help guys, I really did appreciate it all.
    However I've remembered something I used to use in Ubuntu.
    I added a Gnome-Shell .desktop file into my /home/myname/.config/autostart folder like this
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Application
    Exec=gnome-shell --replace &
    Hidden=false
    X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
    Name[en_US]=Gnome Shell
    Name=Gnome Shell
    Comment[en_US]=Start Gnome Shell!
    Comment=Start Gnome Shell!
    OnlyShowIn=GNOME
    It starts only in Gnome and nothing else, just how I wanted it to. I'm aware that this is more of a bandaid fix than anything else, but it works!
    Thanks again, now I can use KDE, Gnome-Shell, and Openbox.

    Hello nimbus,
    i don't have a gdm setup at hand, but i think you still need gnome-session. /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-shell.desktop should probably state
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    Exec=gnome-session --session gnome-with-shell
    Type=Application
    note gnome-sessions man page; sessions specified via the --session flag are looked for in /usr/share/gnome-sessions/sessions.
    There you should have a file like gnome-with-shell.desktop
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    EDIT: Well....definately more progress this time....I think.
    It still doesn't load gnome-shell and instead says
    No EXEC Line in session file gnome-shell, loading fallback mode.
    Here are my entries
    /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-shell.desktop
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    Exec=gnome-session --session gnome-with-shell
    Type=Application
    /usr/share/gnome-sessions/gnome-with-shell.session
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;gnome-power-manager
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    Exec=gnome-shell (I added this in thinking it might be the issue
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    OnlyShowIn=Gnome
    I can still get it to load by using grun and typing gnome-shell --replace, but that's besides the point. Also it would seem that none of my startup applications load like they are suposed to, but I'm sure it's some sort of bug related to the issue.
    Edit:
    Adding even further to the oddness, it would appear that gnome.session already supposedly has these entries, further baffling me as to why it doesn't load gnome-shell to begin with unless it's in my /home/name/.config/autostart folder.
    /usr/share/gnome-sessions/Gnome.session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    Sigh...really confused now. I guess what I need help with is figuring out why old shell here isn't loading unless it's in my autostart directory.

  • Gnome/GDM Issue - System freeze before starting Gnome every reboot.

    Hi guys, sorry for my bad english.
    I've a strange problem with Gnome/GDM DE.
    Yesterday, I have installed gnome on my laptop but it works 1 times every 2.
    The first time i power on my laptop it works, the second (or if i try to reboot) it freezes before starting GDM.
    I can't switch tty, can't shutdown. I can only power off pressing power button.
    How can i solve this problem? Anyone had this issue before?
    PS: (I've installed arch yet on the same laptop using XFCE without problems)

  • GDM does not allow resolution while Gnome does

    My xorg.conf is set to default resolution 1024x768, and when I get into gnome I have 1152x864 set up and it works fine. If I set my default xorg.conf resolution to 1152x864 like my gnome, GDM isn't displayed and I have to login blindly. This would not be a problem except I want to run openbox in 1152x864 which uses the default xorg.conf resolution.
    I'm using the proprietary ati drivers with my radeon x800. Any ideas?

    Ok, I investigated problem a bit.
    I have GDM configured with autologin, what was working for me for a while and now it stopped. Here's the output of stystemctl status gdm.service:

    I tried removed autologin from /etc/gdm/custom.conf and rebooted system. GDM showed up, but it was not allowing me to login always failing with message, that authentication failed.
    Any idea how to deal with this issue?

  • [SOLVED] Did pacman -Syu and now gdm, gnome, and pacman won't work

    Hi everyone, I did a search for my problem, but cannot find the solution. Basically, I updated my computer this morning and as soon as the packages got installed my computer crashed. I am using another computer right now. These were the packages that were upgraded: dbus-core, bluez, dbus, gsfonts, libcups, libgdiplus, mono, openssl.
    So after I installed the packages, my screen went black with some error message (don't remember what it is now. I believe it was something about GDM not working.) So I rebooted and "rpcbind" and "File Alteration Monitor" failed. Then I got a bunch of Gdm error messages with "gdm-binary[46081]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors"  as the last message. I don't know how to check the X server log for errors so I logged in and tried pacman -Syu again. I got this error "pacman: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8: invalid ELF header." I also tried startx and gnome-session , but they both failed to work as well. It seems like I'm having a graphics error. I don't know what to do now. Any help would be appreciated.

    Eivuwan wrote:Hi everyone. After some thinking, I realized that as attached as I am to Arch, I do not have as much free time as I did in the past to tinker with it. So I manually mounted my IPod and copied everything in my home folder to it. Then I installed Ubuntu. Maybe I'll come back to Arch one day, but for now, farewell. Thanks for all your help.
    Wise decision -- Ubuntu is very stable (we used it extensively in my last place of business; I'm now retired). I've gone a different route, since I prefer to start small, build the environment I want and nothing more (which was my reason for choosing Arch). My preferred environment is pretty minimal -- no desktop system (no Gnome or KDE), just a window manager (dwm) and the apps I need. I did a test install in the last day or so and learned enough about Slackware (I first used it in the early 90s when it was pretty much the only Linux distribution) to convince myself that it will work for me. It's more of a pain to get the apps installed than Arch, certainly, but once you know how to do it and where to find them, it's not really a problem. But my objective is the same as yours -- get away from Arch's rolling releases. Again, as an old hand at both individual development and managing large software projects, what Arch is trying to do is difficult. Because the various components of the system are updated more or less continuously, it's impossible to thoroughly test the whole thing every time it changes. So on any particular day, you are likely to see problems, as happened to you, me, and other folks who have started threads in this category. And sometimes the problems are so severe you end up with a non-functioning system, as happened to both of us.
    I would hope that, in the future, the powers-that-be at Arch would consider periodic, thoroughly tested releases, say every 6 months like Ubuntu and OpenBSD. The fundamental machinery of Arch is excellent (pacman, etc.), installation is easy, the documentation is adequate (I'm not as impressed by the wiki as others seem to be -- see the OpenBSD or FreeBSD documentation; what's available for Slackware is also very good). But I think there are tremendous quality hazards in the rolling release methodology, and forcing it on Arch's users is a bad idea, I think. It can be optional, for the adventurous. This is exactly how the OpenBSD people operate. There's a release every 6 months that is invariably rock solid. If they find problems after the release, they will make changes on a STABLE cvs branch. But you can also, if you choose, run what is on the cvs trunk, which they designate CURRENT, if you are so inclined and willing to take the chance on less thoroughly tested code. This is more or less equivalent to Arch now. I'm suggesting that Arch consider adding a STABLE version.

  • [Solve]Set ibus as default IM when use other english language in gnome

    Hello everybody,
    I am satisfied with Arch + Gnome3 + Ibus in English language. With English language, Ibus is already set to default system-input-methods as well as I expected.
    However, today I change language from english to vietnamese, System-input-methods change to other method, not Ibus.
    I looked for programs to change input method such as im-settings, im-chooser and im-switch, but it's not exist in arch package or aur.
    I add "export GTK_IM_MODULE="ibus"" to file ~/.bashrc , I can use Ibus only in firefox, libreoffice. To use Ibus with other programs as gedit, gnome-terminal, I must manual change input method by right click and choose Ibus.
    So, How can I set Ibus as default system IM?
    By the way, I can use Ibus in all Qt applications without trouble after set in qtconfig.
    Thanks for reading.

    Well, I set: LOCALE="vi_VN.UTF-8" instead of LOCALE="en_US.UTF-8" by default in file "/etc/rc.conf" and it's solved.

  • Gnome-shell 3.10.2 + gdm: interface broken. Restart with "r" fixes it

    Hello forum
    I have a fresh install of Arch with Gnome-shell and GDM, and after logging in for the first time, the Gnome-shell interface appears broken. See the screenshots below:
    The desktop
    http://imgur.com/RWJROK3
    and when clicking the top right tray icons, the menu appears broken, and no text is shown.
    http://imgur.com/haVXdhD
    If I do Alt+F2 and run "r" to restart Gnome-shell, everything gets back to normal. Even if I log off and on again, everything stays running ok.
    I have a DELL XPS, and I have bumblebee (+bbswitch)  installed, using the intel+nvidia drivers, as instructed in the Arch Wiki.
    Any clues on how to debug this? It's a (minor) headache having to 'r' on every first login boot.
    Thanks!!
    UPDATE: It doesn't happen on EVERY first boot. I just rebooted and it didn't happen, but earlier today it happened 2 times. I'll keep trying to narrow it down to see what might be causing this.

  • GNOME 3 kicks out to gdm a few times a day at random

    Hi all,
    My Arch installation has been working swimmingly until roughly ten days ago. Since that time, my session in GNOME will - for lack of a better phrase - crash and kick me back to the gdm login screen. I thought it may have something to do with flashplugin, but the last few times it has happened, I have either been on pages that had no flash on it or was working on e-mail. I also thought that perhaps it had to do with whether I was plugged into power or not, but thus far this kicking me off GNOME problem has been an equal opportunity offender.
    Thanks everyone for your help.

  • [Solved] -Change the background image of gdm login screen.

    When I first installed Arch I found that the default background image of gdm login screen ( or lock screen ) didn't look good with the desktop image that I had, so when I installed I looked for a way to change this. Sadly I could not find any direct and easy way, I looked in forums, I looked in gconf-editor and I could not find any relevant information about it. So I decided to look for the file and change it.
    This was not the best option, clearly since now that I installed Gnome 2.30 it replaced the image with the old one and I had to change the file again. Since maybe some other people are having similar problems I thought I could just post the place where gdm is looking for the file, and if somebody has any suggestions about how to change it with a better way, I would welcome it .
    After the longest intro to a directory, here it is: /usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/gnome/background-default.jpg
    Thank you .

    Not to belabour the point, but after much hair pulling, I stumbled upon the following method, and it works perfectly. It sets the default background (for GDM login, Lock, desktop...etc.) for Gnome to whatever you want--even new users get the new default background on their desktop, although they can obviously change it, this is only the default. The page also shows a method of doing the same as gnome-appearance-properties method with just gconftool-2. I hope this doesn't just cause confusion.
    [Note: It still has to be run as root of course. I used sudo.]
    http://library.gnome.org/admin/system-a … n#gconf-20
    gconftool-2 --direct \
    --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults \
    --type string \
    --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename some_picture_filename.png

  • [Solved] Can't start xmonad from GDM

    I can't seem to get xmonad-darcs to work with GDM. I copied the xmonad.hs from the wiki. After I login to xmonad, GDM disappears (the background stays the same) and nothing happens. Mod-shift-return doesn't start a terminal and the cursor isn't displayed. Has anyone had the same experience?
    Last edited by KRTac (2010-03-17 19:37:04)

    If you have compiled your xmonad.hs, maybe it has been running normally!
    You can test it by modifying your xmonad.hs as below to see if roxterm starts, then:
    %xmonad --recompile
    %xmonad --restart
    myStartupHook :: X ()
    myStartupHook = do {
    spawn "roxterm";
    --spawn "lxpanel";
    xmonad $ defaultConfig
    { borderWidth = 1
    , startupHook = myStartupHook

  • [Solved] Offer a choice to spawn gdm at getty?

    Due to numerous bugs (most of which related to permission), I have decided that the only sensible way to log into my XFCE desktop is through gdm. Running "startxfce4" with magic prefixes like dbus-launch, ck-launch, etc. won't help, neither will startx with .xinintrc.
    But sometimes I need to spawn a desktop session when I have been working under the console. I may wish to switch back and forth. So now what I have to do is: Ctrl-Alt-F2, type my password, sudo gdm, and type my password again. But hey, why can't we just spawn gdm at getty? That will save me from typing my password twice. There is also one more benefit: I have followed https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … tab_method, and now I have two grub items. With the choice to spawn gdm at getty I can get rid of the one with X.

    milomouse wrote:
    not sure if they'll work in your situation but you may or may not want:
    1) bind F1 in console to execute GDM (check the Arch Wiki for: Extra Keyboard Keys in Console)
    2) ngetty instead of agetty/similar.  ngetty allows you to execute programs per getty (tty instance) before login or after login, though i'm not certain if it will work for GDM.
    some ideas, anyway, as i cannot test since i don't use gdm or similar.
    Inspired by the idea of using ngetty, I (instead) wrote small C program called mylogin.c:
    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <unistd.h>
    #include <string.h>
    int main() {
    fprintf(stderr, "This should go to stderr.\n");
    printf("Welcome to mylogin.\n"
    " - Type your username and enter to invoke vanilla login.\n"
    " - Press enter without username to launch gdm.\n"
    "login: ");
    char user[256];
    if (fgets(user, 256, stdin) == NULL) {
    // EOF
    return 0;
    if (strlen(user) == 1) {
    printf("Executing gdm.\n");
    execl("/usr/sbin/gdm", "/usr/sbin/gdm", NULL);
    } else {
    user[strlen(user)-1] = '\0';
    printf("Executing login for user %s.\n", user);
    execl("/bin/login", "--", user, NULL);
    printf("execl failed :(");
    return 1;
    Compiled and installed it:
    cc -omylogin mylogin.c && sudo cp mylogin /bin
    (I will stick to agetty in my instruction to keep things simple) and in /etc/inittab I changed
    c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty6 linux
    to
    c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -n -l /bin/mylogin -8 38400 tty6 linux
    And when I switch to tty6, I'm offered the choice to invoke vanilla login or gdm. mylogin does the trick.
    But there is still an interesting problem. If I switched to tty6 and launch gdm there, I would expect the output of gdm to be printed there. But there is no output from gdm. And I was able to confirm that both stdout and stderr go to tty6 with the above program. Is gdm redirecting the output? If so, where?
    To milomouse: I will switch to ngetty, as I see it as a better replacement for agetty on all sides (I don't use serial terminal anyway). But as I said above, I sticked to agetty here to keep things simple.

  • [Solved] NetworkManager asks for "default Keyring" password...

    Hi there,
    when I try to connect to the Wireless Network at my girlfriend's place, I have to set up the network connection myself, as it uses a WEP encyption. After entering the horribly long passphrase, I'm asked to enter another password. The box popping up sais:
    "Network Manager wants to access the deafault keyring, but it is locked".
    Being new to Linux in general I don't even know what that keyring is, where I can find/set it's password or what to enter. I found a solution for gnome desktops but I'm running xfce4 on a x86_64 architecture. Connecting at my place or at the university is no problem and I'm not asked to enter the password.
    Thanks for taking the time to help me.

    I was able to disable the annoying 'feature' whereby the Gnome Keyring keeps asking for a password at login by editing /etc/pam.d/login in addition to the other edits suggested to /etc/pam.d/gdm (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Net … Kit_issues). I also deleted ~/.gnome2/keyrings. This is especially useful since I don't use gdm to login, rather loggin straight from the shell. YMMV if you use kde or another DE.

  • Gnome stuck in fallback mode?

    I just installed Arch as a virtual desktop using VMware Workstation.
    I have installed the drivers mentioned in the Wiki and the computer running it has excellent specs and shouldn't have a problem.
    Originally at the start of GDM there was an error message in the form of a dialog box that said it reverted to fallback mode.
    I would like to get it out of fallback mode or figure out what is wrong.

    My apologies, I should have done that in the original post.
