[SOLVED] Gnome 3.4 - Super+R to launch terminal
I added a new shortcut to "gnome-terminal" as Ctrl+Alt+T on keyboard shortcuts configuration program. However, I can only set it to <C-A-t> (control+alt+t), and not to Super+R, or Super+T, or Super+ENTER.
It used to work on Gnome 3.2? Should I report this on bugzilla, or does anybody have any idea of what my issue really is? Thank you.

[solved] Gnome 3 crashes on startup
Hi everyone,
since the two days now a strange error prevents gnome 3 from starting up. It loads, shows my background and the mouse and then crashes.
The errors I found in everything.log are:

X.org, however, works (writing this from xfce )
I already tried re-installing gnome-shell and glibc. The last updated before this happened were

[Solved] Gnome-terminal does not start (fresh install)
Whenever I install gnome-terminal, I have the following message displayed:
(gconftool-2:28984): GConf-WARNING **: Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon:/usr/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally without any error message
Then whenever I launch gnome-terminal I have this message:
** (gnome-terminal:1102): CRITICAL **: atk_bridge_adaptor_cleanup: assertion `inited' failed
The problem seems to be related to dbus. I have even tried guake which complains explicitly about "No D-BUS daemon running".
Systemctl is telling me that d-bus is up and running.
Any help appreciated.

When I try to launch terminal, i get an error "You are not authorized to run this applicationThe administrator has set your shell to an illegal value."
If you'd asked a question in your original post it might have solicited more pertinent responses. As it is, you were stating a fact. No one knew whether you considered that fact a problem, or what you were hoping to gain by doing so.
The simple addition of 'can anyone help me fix this so I can run Terminal' would have counted for a lot.
As it is, your solution is likely to require the Terminal, so you're going to need to fix that one way or another. The simplest would be to create a new admin account (System Preferences -> Users & Groups) then log in using that account.
Then try and launch the terminal. If that works the problem is specific to your original account and can likely be fixed via some command-line tweaking. I'd start with:
dscl . read /Users/<username>
(where <username> is the short name of the account having a problem). This will show the records in the directory data for your account, one of which will be UserShell. Chances are that value is invalid, or missing, and can be corrected via:
sudo dscl . -change /Users/<username> UserShell <currentValue> /bin/bash
(where <currentValue) is the current setting for UserShell) which will change the user's shell to /bin/bash (the default).
Of course, you might already know this and already tried, but since you didn't say so in your original post it's worth checking. -
Launching terminal with applescript
I just recently ventured into the world of MAC, and I am trying to create an applescript (APS) to do the following
1. Launch Terminal
2. make terminal a X11 emulator ("/usr/bin/open-x11")
3. source blah1.sh ("source blah.sh")
4. source blah2.sh ("source blah.sh")
5. chage dir to foo1 ("cd foo1")
6. Leave window open
i have a good idea on how to use APS tolaunch terminal, but I am not sure if it is reading the source file, because it does not chage directory. Could someone help with an example script.
Thanks
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.8)Hi Lanre,
try this
tell application "Terminal" to run
do shell script "/usr/bin/open-x11 ; source blah.sh ; source blah2.sh ; cd foo1"
or you can make a .term file (search google for how to) -
[SOLVED] Gnome launcher as root?
Hello.
I have two minecraft installations, One on my user account and one over at /root/
I have configured a script to run the minecraft on my user account, However for the one at /root/, I have been having a bit of a problem, When i access /root/ in thaunar as root, I can run said minecraft just fine, I made a script to also run that as root and when i run it in thaunar as root, It starts the minecraft at /root just fine, But when i set my permissions to /root/ as read only then made a launcher through alacarte, The same script launches the minecraft on my user account, Can i get any help?
Also the script used to launch minecraft from my regular account
Minecraft.sh
optirun minecraft
Now for the root one
Maincraft
su
cd /root/
optirun minecraft
I would be grateful for any help
Edit: My desktop environment is gnome 3
Ps:- I hope this is the correct section

Right now you try to use su to get root rights. su asks for a password which you'll never be giving since you're not launching it from a terminal. gksu however aks for the password in a graphical fashion so that you can provide it even if you launch it from the gnome launcher for example.
I don't know what optirun is or does but I guess this will do the trick:
gksu optirun /root/minecraft
By the way, you could also install minecraft somewhere in your home folder so that you won't need root permissions to access it.
If you want to create a launcher you might want to look into .desktop files. See /usr/share/applications and ~/.local/share/applications.
EDIT: This is all assuming there actually is an executable file called minecraft in /root.
Thanks a lot, I never though of using gksu before optirun, By the way, Optirun is a bumblebee command that basically uses the nvidia GPU if you have an "Optimus" system -

And it just stays there at least for 10 min (tested)
To log in i have to restart GDM once or twice..
And then suddenly i get the login screen.. Sometimes rendered correct, other times it is not, but it works ok...
Once i have logged in there is no problem at all..

Unfortunately this is not the case for me. I erased the directory, just in case (perhaps this was stupid), but this does not help easier. Somehow gnome-settings-daemon is not started, or crashes somewhere on the way. When I start it manually, then it works.
I have erased the color plugin (/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libcolor.so) as per advice somewhere else on this forum, but this did not help either.
Most themes don't work on Gnome 3.2 tough due to an API change. You'll just have to wait for the theme authors to update them.
I am using the default theme (I believe), so I think this is not the reason in my case .
EDIT: It was not easy to figure out how to start up gnome-settings-daemon manually. So for the record, I found it in /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon (not in my PATH).

[SOLVED] Gnome 3.2, gdm only show the default wallpaper
Hi all,
I just upgrade to gnome 3.2 on 2 machines, for the first one I got a glib2 from AUR so it do not work first (it's now solve) but for the second one I still can't login into gnome.
Gdm only show the default wallpaper and a cursor.
Here is the gdm log :

[SOLVED][GNOME] What is the line for the startup sound?
Hi!
I removed the startup sound from GNOME.
I don't even remember if it did work, but I press the remove button a bit too quickly and there is no confirmation box.
Could you launch gnome-session-properties and tell me the command line for the GNOME startup sound please?
Thanks!

Last edited by wrc1944 (2009-04-07 14:29:37)OK- I think I've SOLVED all my Nautilus problems, which included the endless respawning "Starting Filemanager windows" on the panel, the hal daemon related GDM 3 for 1 key repeat prevents login problem, and the Nautilus refusing to launch problem!
After reviewing the Gentoo Hal documetation, and realizing I had the xf86-input-evdev driver installed on Arch, I had forgotten that in order to get the mouse/keyboard to function I had to previously add a line in xorg.conf that was now conflicting with hal/dbus and the new xorg server version.
I just commented out this line in xorg.conf, like this
Section "ServerFlags"
# Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"
Option "DontZap" "false"
EndSection
and added the hal daemon (which calls dbus) to my /etc/rc.conf, which allows evdev/hal/dbus to do it's thing.
Along with the edits to the /usr/share/applications/nautilus.desktop file (which is strangely named "File Manager" in Thunar, one of three files of the same name). The edits made are:
X-GNOME-AutoRestart=false # changed from =true
AutostartCondition=GNOME /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop # added this line
Now, I can boot from GDM into a normal gnome session, and Nautilus launches normally, without endlessly repawning itself in the panel.
The fix itself was quite simple, but tracing the cause down and understanding it was not!

[SOLVED] Gnome 3.8 apps crash with X Window System Error
So far this applications are affected:
- gnome-terminal (when clicking on menu)
- gnome-control-center (when choosing Users or Date & Time and some other tiles, choosing account in GOA)
- epiphany (when clicking on new tab button)
They crash with following error in console:
(gnome-control-center:12717): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'gnome-control-center' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadImplementation (server does not implement operation)'.
(Details: serial 3583 error_code 17 request_code 148 minor_code 46)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
dmesg show only this line:

My graphic card (iI guess this has something to do with xorg):
AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4550 (using catalyst legacy driver 13.1 with Xorg 1.12)
Last edited by szorti (2013-04-24 08:40:26)I did a little test:
- upgraded to xorg 1.14
- switched from catalyst to xf86-video-ati drive
Most of the errors dissappeared (GOA still crashes).
But now i can only see message tray using keyboard shortcut (super + m). I read that I need to move my mouse fast to the botton edge of my screen - does not work - instead it show up randomly when i moved mouse near the bottom edge.
I don't want to use the open source drivers (slow and laggy with multi monitor setup I'm using). I hope gnome devs will fix this bugs soon.
SOLUTION (to still use catalyst):
I found out that this is an Xorg 1.12 bug.
Bug: http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2012/12/msg00133.html
To solve this use patch from this bugreport to compile xorg 1.12
I used this aur packages:
1. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xf86 … evdev1.12/
2. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xorg-server1.12/ - I have edited PKGBUILD to include patch from bug report above

[SOLVED]Gnome 3 | There is no application installed for _any file type
I just installed arch and gnome 3. I'm trying to open files via nautilus, but get "There is no application installed for ..." for any type of file I try, including plain text files, binaries, etc. Do I have to configure gnome manually for it to open these files? I've read the arch beginner wiki and the gnome wiki, but this problem is not mentioned there. Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: Solved
There were three things I needed to do to get this working correctly:
1. $ pacman -S gnome-mime-data
2. For text files, pacman -S gvim #This conflicts with vim, but the package gvim now contains vim (and vice versa, but nautilus won't open files unless gvim is installed instead of vim)
3. Binary files: I tried running some binaries I programmed on Ubuntu, but they wouldn't run until I recompiled them. Duh.
Note: I still have a small issue when opening a file that has no mime data associated with it. I can click "select application," but I am forced to choose from a very limited list, and there is no option to enter a command or browse for other programs.

........ I still need to install some packages, including libre office, a music player, an image viewer, etc. I'd like to get back much of the functionality that I had on Ubuntu, just with a little less bloat.
Cheers.
Regarding your music player, I recently had a struggle deciding which way to go.
Banshee, no, pulls in gnome and mono stuff (running as pure a Xfce desktop as I possibly can here). Exaile, have tried and really don't like it. Rhythmbox, again, too ingrained with gnome libraries for my liking. Amarok, unfortunately the love affair ended with 2.0. Clementine (read Amarok pre 2.0), yes please, but a gtk port would be nice, I have no other use for Qt. Songbird, yes please again, but no longer linux supported. Nightingale (read Songbird fork), seems to have lost momentum.
Of course, this is all just my personal opinion, but you can see the problem I had. There does not seem to be a 'large project' desktop agnostic music player/organiser for linux. They all seem to be deeply tied into Gnome or Kde.
My solution, if you want something lightweight, is MPD and Ario. MPD is just your background daemon that looks after managing your library/database, and Ario is a gtk 'frontend' that will let you search and sort your MPD database, and create the playlists to be played with MPD. The beauty of this system is that you do not need a music app to be running to play your music. Just the lightweight MPD daemon. Once a playlist has been loaded, you can close Ario and just let MPD do it's stuff.
I know Xfce has a panel app that lets you control MPD and even launch Ario to change playlists. I'm sure the other desktops will most likely have some sort of panel app too (I have even written a simple little python script that monitors MPD track changes and diplays a notification).
Anyway, just my thoughts on the issue. For more MPD info, see the wiki at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mpd
Cheers. -

[SOLVED]Gnome Apllication launchers don't work, commands do
Ever since the Clutter gstreamer problems on gnome 3.16 I've been trying to make totem work. Found a solution, but editing the desktop configuration in /usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Totem.desktop won't help Totem run. It's as if the launcher is oblivious to the configuration file, and changes won't take effect. I tried to solve it by having the whole session run on CLUTTER_BACKEND=x11, but that doesn't help either. Strangely, simply running a 'totem %U' or 'totem' command in the terminal works. Even thou when viewing the properties of the launcher it displayes the very same command input. This stands for all native gnome programs (Cheese, Maps).
Last edited by Dalian (2015-05-09 10:54:09)I am having the same problem where using nvidia proprietary driver I cannot start totem via default desktop files.
I have edited org.gnome.Totem.desktop to have the exec line read
Exec=sh -c 'CLUTTER_BACKEND=x11 totem %U'
I have tried to both edit in /usr/share/applications and by duplicating the file into .local/share/applications.
But it doesnt work. Strangely enough, as stated in this thread, it will work if you create a new desktop file with a different name.
Very weird, it is like gnome 3 bypasses the exec linecompletely for core apps only.
If anyone knows what is happening, I would also love to solve this. -
[SOLVED] GNOME 3.16 + GDM Login & Background Image
It's being surprisingly difficult to understand what's needed in order to have a login screen that does not contain the default noise PNG as background.
Apparently now the default theme is a gresource so common css overwrite don't seem to make it.
How did you folks solved this problem?
Apologies if already discussed, it's just that the problem is NOT the GNOME Desktop Background, and NOT the lock screen, just ONLY the gdm background screen during login.
Other tricks seem to not work neither:
sudo -u gdm dbus-launch gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver picture-uri '/new/picture.png'
Thanks for any sort of help with this and Best Regards
Last edited by WebReflection (2015-05-06 19:00:05)I finally got this to work. The wiki needs updating as of now it only states that gnome shell theme is now in a binary format, but not how to extract and repack it afterwards...
Anyway this is how i got it to work.
Use this script to extract gnome-shell-theme inside your choosen working directory
extractgst.sh
#! /bin/sh
#change workdir to suit your system
workdir=/home/merlin/temp/GS/test
gst=/usr/share/gnome-shell/gnome-shell-theme.gresource
mkdir theme
for r in `gresource list $gst`; do
gresource extract $gst $r >$workdir${r/#\/org\/gnome\/shell/}
done
Once you've run the script you should have the theme extracted to the theme folder which was created inside your workdir.
Now you can proceed to add a background image to this folder and edit gnome-shell.css by following the wiki page.
You must now create the file gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml inside the theme directory. Simply copy paste the xml code below into gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml, making sure to change the line that refers to your background image. On my system the background image is named login-background.jpg
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
