Hi everybody, I just notice that right-click on Gnome 3.6 Nautilus doesn't show many of the actions that was present on Gnome 3.4 like "Creat New Document"
Am I doing something Wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Something must be wrong, because my very first two options when I right-click are "New Folder" and "New Document".
Same to me. Maybe he need to put some templates on nautilus?

  • Can you help me solve my aspect ratio issue?

    Hey guys,
I'm posting this in hopes that someone can help me solve an aspect ratio issue with a project that I have to finish by tomorrow.
I'm trying to avoid having to re-edit the entire thing.
I shot the project with my Nikon D7000 DSLR. in 720p 30p (29.97)
I am running Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (the trial version).  I have the full version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
The reason I was working with the trial is that CS3 can't handle the H.264 MOVs that the D7000 records.
You can work with a timeline, but if you try to export anything, it never works.  I always have to convert my footage to ProRes MOVs with MPEG Streamclip before I can work with them is CS3.  That takes a lot of time and a lot of hard drive space.  After much research, I found out that CS5 is the way to go for DSLR footage.  I just need to save up my pennies for the upgrade.
So I thought I'd edit this short (1 minute) project with the trial to see how CS5 works with the D7000 footage.
Upon installing the trial program, I found that the project presets were limited.  I knew this ahead of time because it's clearly stated on the Adobe's website.
But I wasn't aware how limited they are.
Since "DSLR 1280x720p 30p" is not an option with the trial, I was going to use HDV 720p 30p.  But that was not an option either!
So basically, my only option for 16x9 30p was "DV NTSC Widescreen".  It's my understanding that this is 864x480 (in square pixel aspect ratio) or 720x480  (in widescreen pixel aspect ratio)   I needed the output file to be 864x486.  I downsized the footage to 69% in the "Video Effects: Motion" setting so it looked correct in the project.  I didn't think about those extra 6 pixels until I outputed the file and saw thin black lines on the top and bottom.  My guess is that Premiere is adding black pixels because my project is technically 720x480 (1.2121)
Any thoughts on how I can get a clean 864x486 export?  I'd rather not re-edit the whole thing...which I would have to do in CS3 after I spent a few hours converting the original files in MPEG Streamclip.  I don't know if there is a way to export something out of CS5 and then open a new project in CS3 to make this work.
    Thanks in adavance!
    - Jordan

On export, just crop a few pixels off of each side; that'll let the image scale correctly to the output frame size without black bars.
I'm not running the trial, but you should still be able to create a custom sequence preset using the Desktop editing mode. Just switch over to the General tab when you create a new sequence, and choose "Desktop" from the editing modes. Set the rest of the parameters as you need them.
Even easier: once you've imported your footage, just drag a clip to the New Item icon at the bottom of the project panel; a sequence will be created matching your footage parameters. You can edit at full-resolution, and then export to your desired frame size when complete--you'll probably still need to crop a few pixels (in the Export Settings window) to eliminate the black bars.

  • Has anyone solved the "garbled characters" issue i...

When I use Nokia Maps on my N95, all streets and towns which contain special characters such as: é, è, ü, ä, ö, etc… do appear garbled. For example,
    Zürich appears as: Zã¼rich
    München appears as: Mã¼nchen
    Liège appears as: Liã"ge
I saw a couple posts on this forum where people suggested to format the memory card, some other suggested to reload the firmware (my N95 has 12.0.013) but nothing has helped. I went as far as using someone's PC whose WinXP is installed in French - I thought that maybe the operating system or regional settings could have some influence, but I was wrong.
Has anyone solved this extremely annoying issue?
    Thx

I solved it. It took me one evening. I wonder why Nokia haven't published any comments on this old issue.
Solution can be found below, but before I want to tell about some technical details. Maybe guys at Nokia will read them
As someone on this forum said before the problem is that map names are in UTF-8 format, but phone tries to show them using another encoding. After some googling I found that this issue is well-known because Nokia phones use ISO 8859-1 (which is similar to Windows-1252, Western European) by default but some application assume UTF-8 to be default.
At first, I discovered that when I start Nokia map with empty SD card and allow it to download something from internet, all names were shown correctly. I supposed that the problem sits in that awful Map Loader, but I was wrong: it does absolutely nothing special with data files, just downloading and unzipping. And this super-mega-feature-rich-map-loader require about 40Mb to download for .NET 3.0 plus 10 Mb for itself. Never seen anything worse
So I've started to compare contents of one SD card with incorrect street and city names and another with correct.
After some time I came across Cachedatheader.cdt file in diskcache folder. And what do you think?
The file from correct SD card contains a literal string: "UTF-8". While incorrect one contains a string saying "ISO 8859-1". I've nearly fell out of my chair after seeing that.
I've replaced wrong file with correct one and names became readable on all my 180mb of previously downloaded maps.
Finally, after playing with it some more I found a simple solution which should work for everyone:
    ***** SOLUTION *****
    1. Enable internet access in Nokia Maps application (set it to When Needed).
    2. Access memory card from your PC and go to "\PRIVATE\20001f66\diskcache" folder.
    3. Delete "CachedatHeader.cdt" file. Perhaps you should backup it somewhere before deleting, but it looks like it can be removed safely without affecting existing maps.
    4. Put the card back in the phone if you extracted it and start Nokia Maps.
    5. Allow Nokia Maps to access internet and try downloading some new locations (you don't need to download much, just let it access server) or searching for something.
    6. Now codepage should be correct and all names become readable.
This effect seems to be permanent and will stay even if you disable internet access later. Also note that you don't have to format card, remove or reinstall any map files. The problem is just in one small file.
Nokia Maps recreates missing CachedatHeader.cdt, but it will recreate it correctly only if internet access is enabled when it starts. Probably the best way to avoid wrong codepage problem is to enable internet access at first start of Nokia Maps and use Map Loader only after downloading some bits of map directly from the phone.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3 won't load after adding networkmanager

    Hello!
Just did a fresh install on a HP42-475DX system, did a -Syy/-Syu, installed xorg, xf86-video-ati, telepathy, and gnome. Everything installed fine and I was able to log into Gnome with no issues.
While trying to get wireless working in Gnome (and have an applet appear in the corner), I installed network-manager-applet, removed network from daemons and replaced it with networkmanager, and then rebooted. My boot sequence goes all the way through loading gdm and then the screen goes black. It's still backlit, there's just nothing displaying. ctrl+alt+f1 does not yield a terminal for me to log in with.
Is there something I'm missing and/or screwed up?
Thanks for your help in advance.
    Czar.
Edit: Booting into live environment and removing networkmanager from the daemon array allows me to log into Gnome.

Caligo, thanks for the reply! I don't specifically have network being blocked right now. Should it be? Right now, my DAEMONS array looks like this:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus ifplugd netfs crond gdm)
    wonder wrote:paste ~/.xsession-errors
wonder, I could not locate that file. When I do a ls -a to print my hidden files, the only one I have is .bash_history.
Thank you both for your help. Have a good one!
    Czar.
Edit: Caligo, you nailed it! I added !network to the DAEMONS array and it came up perfect.

If you are DPS single edition user, then you need to enter serial number to activate app.
But it would be more helpful if you let us know which DPS edition you have?

I don't have those issues -- and I think it was mentioned that it has something to do with some of the gtk themese and to try changing those.  I am having something odd though.  When I switch desktops it takes the machine a few seconds to redraw the icons on the desktop.  Any clues as to what's going on there?  I'm using "murrine" if that matters.

  • [SOLVED]HDMI audio and gnome volume applet issues

    Hi all,
After setting up Arch without too many problems came the real pain in the ass: HDMI audio over a Asus NVIDIA GeForce EN210....
Eventually I got everything to work with the help of the ASLA en Pulse wiki pages, but I found the last piece of the puzzle here:
    http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HO … ,_or_GT240
Maybe this is useful for others too.
The only problem I have now is that the ALSA deamon fails to load. I found this in the boot log file (/var/log/boot):
    Thu Apr 12 13:54:19 2012: :: Restoring ALSA Levels    [BUSY] Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Nvidia GPU 0b HDMI/DP" "HDA:10de000b,10de0101,00100200" "0x1043" "0x8343"
Thu Apr 12 13:54:20 2012: Hardware is initialized using a generic method
Does this mean I don't need the alsa deamon anymore? Sound still works normally after boot but a strange thing is that I can turn up and down the volume with the gnome shell volume applet but the volume of media applications like vlc do not react. Same problem with flash video's like youtube. I do hear the "blip" sound from the applet.
Does anyone have ideas how to fix this?

  • [Solved] Gnome-shell text turned to rectangles after botched upgrade

    Hi all,
I've run into a problem that I just can't solve, so I was wondering if somebody with a lot of expertise could help out. My system has a couple of stability issues; it freezes up every few days, and I have to make a hard reboot (I think it's related to the video card, but I haven't had the funds to go get a better one yet). The last time it froze was during a pacman upgrade, and I had to reboot. At the new boot, after logging in, all of the gnome-shell letters turned to rectangles (see screenshot), and I had a bunch of other errors. I ran another upgrade Sync with pacman and rebooted; that took care of the errors, but the font problems still remained. The interesting thing is that the gdm window has no problems, I can see the icons on the top right just fine, and the date renders perfectly. It's only when I log in when the blocks occur, and they only occur on gnome-shell panel text (and on everything under Activities).
I have a 32-bit system that's fully migrated to systemd with open source radeon drivers. Here's some output of journalctl for the current boot, with stuff unrelated to the gnome-shell display removed (e.g. NetworkManager, UFW, etc). However, I didn't find any new errors compared to logs from before the upgrade.

I tried using gnome-tweak tool to fiddle around with the fonts, but that didn't help, none of the fonts would render correctly. Cantarell, which I'm assuming is the gnome-shell font, is still in /etc/fonts/conf.avail, so I don't think that the font file itself went missing. I made the fontconfig update a while ago, and that didn't cause any problems.
I also heard that there were problems with xorg-server, so I downgraded xorg-server, pixman, and cairo to their previous versions, but that didn't help either. EDIT: I've also done a pacman -Syyf gnome-shell to try and reinstall gnome-shell. That also didn't work.
I've run out of things to try. If someone else was more familiar with the workings of gnome-shell fonts, or had a better idea of how to debug, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
UPDATE: I found that /etc/fonts/conf.avail/31-cantarell.conf existed, but was empty. After doing a pacman -Syyf cantarell-fonts, they went right back to normal!

I'm not sure, but i think installing xf86-video-modesetting helped to fix this issue.
I had an error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log like this:

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3 == The Green Screen of Death

    Greetings,
Trying to load GNOME 3 seems to result constantly in nothing but a bright green screen and mouse, despite anything else I've tried. Nothing else loads. I have to change tty to do anything else. Doing so, I executed htop and saw that only 2% of my CPU was being used, and the only thing from GNOME3 that was running was GDM.
These are the steps I have taken before posting in here....
1.) I followed the steps in the wiki for upgrading to GNOME3. Testing repo is the first repo.
----- That brought me into fallback mode but was missing many things. Upon investigation I saw that I had never fully installed GNOME 2 to begin with, that I only had XFCE and GNOME stuff that were brought in as dependecies to some other programs I had installed. So.....
2.) pacman -Rcns gnome followed by following the Wiki for installing from scratch.
----- Got the correct GDM (takes a while to load it), but only get the green screen with mouse cursor.
3.) Thinks and searches, "Hey I need pulseaudio... maybe that is why it isn't working." So I follow the wiki on installing pulseaudio.
    ----- Still, green screen
4.) Maybe, just maybe, it doesn't like the nouvela driver? So I change to nvidia.
    ----- Still, green screen
    5.) Try another pacman -Syu.
----- Nothing new related to gnome 3 updates. Still green screen.
6.) Search frantically on google for anything related to GNOME 3 not loading or showing a green screen. Searched here as well.
----- Found nothing. Still has a freaking green screen upon reboot of system (thankfully I have laptop here to use while trying to figure this out but damn, I am getting aggravated by this frustrating issue).
EDIT: Just in case it is relevant, I am using the inittab method of loading GDM.
EDIT 2: Forgot to add, I also removed all old instances of gconf and gconfd and such in an attempt to solve the green screen.
Defeated, I come here. Does anyone have any advise, suggestions, etc or does this spell the end of GNOME 3 on my computer?

    Greetings,
I have solved this issue. The conflict was with firefox4-beta-opensuse. I replaced it with firefox from the official repositories, and *poof*, I am now in Gnome3 with Gnome shell.
LOL, yeah I tried those things which is what led me to the answer. Actually, it was the lack of libmozjs.so anywhere on my system combined with a google search indicating that it was supposed to be in xulrunner, yet it wasn't. That is what led me to re-uploading firefox completely so that I could do away with the beta xulrunner.
Did you still need that pacman -Qm list? I am going to assume no since it is solved, but who knows, you may have seen something else in my pastebin report as well. Anyways thanks!

if he is having this issue in Gnome-Shell specifically, then it's not the same issue. *Gnome-Shell uses it's own internal version of polkit's agent* ~ as discussed in that thread.. If he is using gnome-fallback (with openbox?), then that is where the polkit-authentification-agent-1 issue applies.

  • [solved] Gnome 3.6 : brightness, battery and background

In addition to gdm freezing, here are the other problems I have:
    - Changing brightness does not work anymore (from hotkeys or brightness extension)
    - Remaining battery power does not show when unplugged
    - Background stays gray whatever I select in the settings
Let me know if you have any fix for these issues.
Note that I start gnome-session with slim instead of gdm.

One more problem: the keyboard settings panel crashes and I cannot change keyboard layout anymore.
    -- edit: solved ---
Reinstalling gnome-settings-daemon did the trick (it removed the deprecated "gnome-settings-daemon-intel-backlight")
    sudo pacman -Syyu gnome-settings-daemon

My apologies for the slight necro-bump but I did a little digging in the wiki and found this very helpful piece of info:
For any users that don't have any of the default folders such as Pictures, Downloads, etc, you can install and run:
    pacman -S xdg-user-dirs
    xdg-user-dirs-update
everything in the Gnome places menu will be sorted and putting pictures in the 'Pictures' folder works!

  • [Solved] Gnome: Locking the screen only locks one of two monitors

    Hey guys,
I'm using Arch for quite a while and I am really happy with it. Today I faced a problem, which no one else seems to have. At least, I wasn't able to find any infos on the net:
When locking the screen, gnome only locks my primary monitor. I cannot only see the windows on my secondary screen, but also use them with the mouse (but not with the keyboard).
Does anyone have an idea, how to solve this or how to find out, what could cause the problem?
I'm using the current versions of Gnome and the nvidia drivers and only one graphics card with one dvi and one hdmi port.
I happily provide more infos, if needed.
    Thanks for any tips!

    Hi again,
there are to bug-reports (one at Arch's package, one upstream) for this issue, but no solution patch so far:
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30547?project=1&cat[0]=2&string=gnome-screensaver
    https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679441
Since this was introduced with the current version of gnome-screensaver and since this is a crucial feature (at least for me at work) I did the following to get it working again, until there is fix:
Download and install the previous version of gnome-screensaver (here: x86_64):
    wget "http://schlunix.org/archlinux/extra/os/x86_64/gnome-screensaver-3.4.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz"
    pacman -U gnome-screensaver-3.4.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
Prevent pacman from upgrading gnome-screensaver, with adding the following to /etc/pacman.conf:
    IgnorePkg = gnome-screensaver
When there is a fix, just remove "gnome-screensaver" from "IgnorePkg" and update your system as usual.
