[SOLVED][Gnome 3.6] notification / notify bug - ONLY icons are shown

Hi,
since the upgrade from gnome 3.4 to 3.6, the notify notifications at the bottom only show the icon associated to the notification, and nothing else (the background/text just my browser showing some text from an arch wiki site...) :
The screenshot shows the USB icon that pops up when I plug-in a USB device. All the text, background and the frame is missing, only the icon is shown. Typing
notify-send 'Hello world!' 'This is an example notification.' --icon=dialog-information
in the shell also only shows the icon (a bulb) and nothing else. I don't know if this could be related, but I have the infinality patched truetype rendering library installed. However, infinality was already in use when running gnome 3.4...

Hi epinephrine, thanks for your post. I thought that Gnome 3.6 had some kind of weird new notification system I hadn't figured out yet, but it turned out to be the Atolm shell theme I was using. Would you please mark this as "solved" so anyone searching for this will see it?

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 2.30 logout = black screen only

Are any of the rest of you that don't run a display manager getting a black screen only after logging out from version 2.30 of Gnome that just hit the repos?
This means no command line, no shutdown, no startx, or anything other than blackness. I have to reboot just to reach a command line again, then I can startx, or shutdown. Things worked fine before this, so I'm guessing it's a bug with one of the new packages.
If someone can confirm, I'll file a bug report.
    Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME is messed up after full system upgrade

I ran a full system upgrade today (last one was about 1-2 months ago) and it went smoothly.
Everything boots normally, and my default GNOME desktop also boots, but all the icons are messed up, as can be seen in this screenshot.
And worst, the overlay panel (e.g. when pressing the Windows key) is completely b0rked and unusable.
The GNOME desktop is the default one with no modifications that I know of. I tried searching for existing issues but didn't find any.
    I'm running Intel Graphics on:
    $ lspci | grep VGA

    Any ideas?

  • [GNOME] Titlebar icons are missing

    Hey,
I am coming from KDE and decided to give GNOME another try.
So my problem is, that in the titlebar there are no icons. GTK2 applications have those icons.
    This is what I tried:
    - delete all gnome related config files in $HOME
    - reinstalled gnome
    - installed xfce and looked if the icons are there (just wanted to make sure that this isn't a GNOME only issue)
    - installed various themes and icon themes and changed them but without luck
    - switched to dark mode but the issue is still present
    - launched a gtk3 app in kde - still no titlebar icons
This is what it looks right now:
I am running out of ideas.. does anyone know what else I can try?
    Thanks in advance!

  • [Solved] Gnome: Locking the screen only locks one of two monitors

    Hey guys,
I'm using Arch for quite a while and I am really happy with it. Today I faced a problem, which no one else seems to have. At least, I wasn't able to find any infos on the net:
When locking the screen, gnome only locks my primary monitor. I cannot only see the windows on my secondary screen, but also use them with the mouse (but not with the keyboard).
Does anyone have an idea, how to solve this or how to find out, what could cause the problem?
I'm using the current versions of Gnome and the nvidia drivers and only one graphics card with one dvi and one hdmi port.
I happily provide more infos, if needed.
    Thanks for any tips!

    Hi again,
there are to bug-reports (one at Arch's package, one upstream) for this issue, but no solution patch so far:
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30547?project=1&cat[0]=2&string=gnome-screensaver
    https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679441
Since this was introduced with the current version of gnome-screensaver and since this is a crucial feature (at least for me at work) I did the following to get it working again, until there is fix:
Download and install the previous version of gnome-screensaver (here: x86_64):
    wget "http://schlunix.org/archlinux/extra/os/x86_64/gnome-screensaver-3.4.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz"
    pacman -U gnome-screensaver-3.4.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
Prevent pacman from upgrading gnome-screensaver, with adding the following to /etc/pacman.conf:
    IgnorePkg = gnome-screensaver
When there is a fix, just remove "gnome-screensaver" from "IgnorePkg" and update your system as usual.

    I did a little test:
    - upgraded to xorg 1.14
    - switched from catalyst to xf86-video-ati drive
Most of the errors dissappeared (GOA still crashes).
But now i can only see message tray using keyboard shortcut (super + m). I read that I need to move my mouse fast to the botton edge of my screen - does not work - instead it show up randomly when i moved mouse near the bottom edge.
I don't want to use the open source drivers (slow and laggy with multi monitor setup I'm using). I hope gnome devs will fix this bugs soon.
    SOLUTION (to still use catalyst):
I found out that this is an Xorg 1.12 bug.
    Bug: http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2012/12/msg00133.html
To solve this use patch from this bugreport to compile xorg 1.12
    I used this aur packages:
    1. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xf86 … evdev1.12/
    2. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xorg-server1.12/ - I have edited PKGBUILD to include patch from bug report above

  • [SOLVED]Gnome 3.10 Icons are broken

I upgraded earlier to Gnome 3.10. Although I've had a lot of problems.. I'm working on them one at a time.
Most of the default icons are not showing anymore. My Nautilus looks like this:
Some of the applications icons do still exist.
If I create a new user and log in, the icons are all fine. But I cannot figure out how to bring back icons on my own user account.
I tried running the command on http://askubuntu.com/questions/56313/ho … e-defaults, which set my favourites and wallpaper back to default. Icons still aren't fixed.
I tried running gtk-update-icon-cache on my icons folder. Tried running xdg-user-dirs-update. Tried sudo pacman -S $(pacman -Ssq gnome-icon-theme). Tried running /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache and tried reinstalling librsvg. None of these have helped.
    Thanks.

Not solved for me I'm afraid. I'm running Openbox + Tint2 setup, with quite a few Gnome applications. I use the Oxygen icon theme.
Since the upgrade to the Gnome 3.10 packages, my GTK3 applications have missing icons which only reappear if I choose the GNOME icon theme using lxappearance, which modifies ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini. Here's my normal settings.ini:
    [Settings]
    gtk-theme-name=Clearlooks-Phenix
    gtk-icon-theme-name=oxygen
    gtk-font-name=Arimo 9
    gtk-cursor-theme-name=aero-drop
    gtk-cursor-theme-size=0
    gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH_HORIZ
    gtk-toolbar-icon-size=GTK_ICON_SIZE_MENU
    gtk-button-images=1
    gtk-menu-images=1
    gtk-enable-event-sounds=1
    gtk-enable-input-feedback-sounds=1
    gtk-xft-antialias=1
    gtk-xft-hinting=1
    gtk-xft-hintstyle=hintfull
    gtk-xft-rgba=rgb
When 'gtk-icon-theme-name=gnome' is used instead, the icons display in GTK3 applications.
Any ideas please how I can get the Oxygen theme to play nicely with Gnome 3.10 applications?

  • Find My Friends - Multiple Notifications Not Working (Only One)

When I setup notifications in my Find My Friends, it appears that only the most recent notification I've setup works.  For example:
    I've setup two notifications:
-Notify Person-B when I leave Home, Every time
-Notify Person-B when I arrive Home, Every time
In this situation only the notification for Arriving is working, since it was the most recent created.  If I delete the notifications and create the arrival first and departure last, then only the departure works.
I'm hoping that I'm missing something here because this is a major flaw.   We want to setup multiple notifications, for example when I arrive and then leave my work, school, etc.  If you can only have one notification per person its borderline useless...
    Help!

I've tried setting it to both; standard results in dots appearing over a blank background. Setting it to hybrid shows them on the satellite image, but with no street signs. Basically, for some reason, nothing from the map will display.

  • [Solved] Libnotify Centers first notification

    Greetings!
Essentially, Libnotify has started centering the first notification, if said notification has more than a couple words. I mean this literally, three or more words gets centered.
For example, using xfce4-notifyd and hitting preview centers the first one, as well as the first one of every row of notifications I choose to generate using that button.
Running notify-send Test has them correctly displayed on the right
Running notify-send "Test this content really well" comes up with a centered notification.
Considered centered isn't even an option, nor did I ever configure it, I am deeply confused.
As this pulls focus away from wherever I am typing, it is extremely distracting. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I use the i3 window manager.
Libnotify is version 0.7.6-1, which is the latest on the arch repos.
Any other information required, I will do my best to provide.
    Thank you in advance,
    Rojikku
Last edited by Rojikku (2015-01-11 20:32:28)

It looks to be something between libnotify and i3.  I'm running i3 as well and did a pacman -Syu earlier this morning, so relatively up to date.  Using notify-send the notification text is centered.  Sending a message bypassing libnotify and the message appears in the upper right corner as it is supposed to.  Oddly enough once there is a message displayed in the upper right all subsequent messages sent via notify-send also appear on the right where they belong.  Remove all the messages and try again with notify-send and we are back to being centered.
Tried it in  XFCE in a virtual machine and same as you, both methods resulted in the notification in the upper right where it belongs.
Also tried it in a MATE virtual machine and the same as XFCE,
Not sure if the bug report should go to libnotify or i3, looking a bit like maybe i3 since it works with MATE and XFCE.

  • [Solved][Gnome 3 & MATLAB] Matlab menus are not usable.

    Hello,
I'm struggling with MATLAB R2010b and Gnome 3. It seems that Matlab can't get informations from Mutter about window size and position. This makes menus (File, Edit, etc.) not usable. If I click, let's say, File on menubar the menu shows near the middle of the screen or just disappears while I release left mouse button. However if window is maximized in right part of the screen (using this cool new feature), which is the starting position and size of MATLAB for me everything works fine. If I maximize it and then make it half-screen size it stops working. I just checked under Xfce4.8 and there is no such problems. I start matlab with "-desktop" parameter, but is seems that doesn't change anything. System is fully updated. And I'm using 64-bits Arch. Is there any solution other than using Xfce or waiting for it to be fixed? Thanks in advance.
Just eliminated window position as potential factor of this problem. I deleted .matlab folder and window starts in the middle of the screen, but is not maximized. If I maximize it I can't access menus normally. So the solution would be starting matlab in maximized window, but I really don't know how to do that.
I found the solution. You can do that by moving matlab window to upper left corner and re-size it manually or use devilspie with this rule:
    ( if
    ( begin
    ( contains ( window_name ) "MATLAB" )
    ( begin
    ( maximize )
    ( println "match" )

Yes, previously gnome-terminal just declared TERM as "xterm" so vim etc, by default, only used 16 colors. Now I can go and remove the bashrc/vimrc hacks I had to work around this.
