[SOLVED] gnome 3 look and feel

Hello all,
I did a fresh install of arch and gnome 3 last night.  I am currently running on fallback mode, prefer that mode to the new interface.  The question I have is, is it possible to easily customize/theme Gnome 3 Fallback in Arch to change some characteristics?
I've run through some of the steps here:  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gn … appearance
however some things don't seem to work yet.  I followed the steps to move the window buttons (close, minimize, maximize) to the left of the window, however the buttons remain on the right.
I would also like to install an icon theme set, I like the shiki colors in themes, and like the linux mint green.  I'm not sure how to install those, tried the repos, but that didn't work.
I would also like to see if there is a way to theme the windows, changing title bar color and close, max, min icons.
A co-worker just installed Linux Mint 12, and is running their Gnome Classic mode, which appears to be fallback mode (I assume), and he can change the themes to icons and windows easily.  Any way to do this in Arch?

honestly, would love to get the linux mint 12 theme installed/moved over.

Installing your themes, icons, etc. is really simple. Themes should be installed into /usr/share/themes  - all that you need to do, is download your theme (un-archive the file), then it is as simple as opening a terminal;
sudo cp /path/of/your/theme /usr/share/themes
This will copy the theme to /usr/share/themes, where Gnome-tweak-tool (and also user-theme extension) can see your themes. The next time you open Gnome-tweak-tool your new theme should be available.
In the Archwiki for Gnome, it also explains how to install icon themes, it works pretty much the same way;

As far as i know, there is no simple gui tool to install themes/icons in Gnome3. They probably should have carried that feature over from Gnome2, but obviously (for some odd reason) decided not to bother.
As for your mint themes, just copy them over to /usr/share/themes ...

  • [SOLVED] Java GTK look and feel

    I opened a thread recently about replacing the ugly swing buttons in Java applications. After successfully modifying my ~/.bashrc, all was well. However, these new changes were only present when run from a terminal. I assumed it was because my desktop was still running a bash session that hadn't loaded the new options yet, so I restarted.
    Symptom: Java apps launched from the GUI still have old swing buttons, but have the GTK look and feel when launched from a terminal.
    My .bashrc additions:

    I use SLiM for a graphical login experience. Could this be affecting it? I'm not sure what happens differently behind the scenes when using a login manager other than that CTRL+ALT+F7 brings me to my GUI when I use one (because all 6 TTYs are still TTYs).

    I had a similar issue where .xinitrc wasn't working to set an environment variable. I put mine in ~/.config/openbox/environment and it worked. If you run openbox try that. If using a different window manager maybe try /etc/environment I am unsure of how slim functions though maybe there are config files for it. I think slim is on it's way out though (already lacks some compatibility with systemd; they may fix it though upstream I have no idea). But yeah try the environment file way and see if that does it (assuming you have tested your command from the shell and it works how you want).

  • Setting defaut look and feel under Gnome generates errors.

    We are migrating some of our developer machines to linux, and in the process we are testing in house applications to ensure that in program file locations are correct and that everything just works. Each of our applications set the default look and feel at startup, which hasn't been a problem until now. Errors are being generated, despite no apparent affect on the application or how the application looks. Commenting out the the line of code that sets default look and feel result in an application that looks exactly the same, but with no errors. Keeping the line commented isn't an option, since the applications look horrendous in a Windows environment w/o the Windows L&F.
    My question is: Since these errors have no apparent affect on the application, do we need to worry about them? Can they be safely ignored?

    Buenos días, tardes o noches muchachos! Explico un poco el tema: resulta que estoy usando un LAF (Look And Feel), de manera más específica  Synthetica BlueLight Look and Feel http://www.javasoft.de/synthetica/themes/
    pero cuando ejecuto por primera vez el código (prueba) me sale la típica ventana de Java y no se aplica por completo el estilo o tema que apliqué, por otro lado al aplicar un "dispose();" y ejecutar nuevamente el código se logra visualizar bien.
    Entonces las preguntas son ¿Esto es por defecto? ¿Hay alguna solución? ¿Que me recomiendan hacer? , les dejo el código y una imagen por si lo necesitan.

    La solución es colocar
    new Apariencia(Apariencia.SYNTHETICA_BLUE_LIGHT); 
    Antes de mandar a llamar el JFrame para que se apliquen los cambios, debe quedar así:

    This is not question, but I just like to tell you about something I find today while answering other forum writers question...

    He looks very powerful but I haven't read about him in the press - so thought I would (how do you say...) "give him a shout out".

    Azureus uses a different graphical toolkit for Java (SWT I think its called) which can more easily take on the native look and feel of either GTK (Gnome's primary toolkit) or QT (KDE's toolkit) depending on whats running.
    Most Java apps just use the Swing GUI toolkit (Java's own), which only takes on the look and feel of GTK stuff... totally ignoring QT to fend for itself =\. I use gtk-qt-engine to get GTK apps to imitate KDE's appearance, not sure if Java's Swing is affected by that though.

  • JTree Button, Line and Java look and feel ?

    Hi all,
    I have 3 small problem with my JTree ..
    1) The 'expand' button size ...
    I set a different Icon for each node in a getTreeCellRendererComponent method (from a class that extends DefaultTreeCellRenderer )...
    The icon are 32x32 pixels.. .and the RowHeight and the Font have been changed too. .
    How to change the size of the expand button (+/-) near the text node ? Because on my JTree, the expand/collapse buttons are really small compare to the icon & row height.
    2) No line appear between the node ...
    I try to set the line style property with -> putClientProperty("JTree.lineStyle", "Angled"); in the JTree constructor OR in the DefaultTreeCellRenderer constructor .. but it doesn't work :/
    3) How to set a Java look and feel for my JTree (actually, I have a Windows look and feel ..)
    I know .. I have grouped 3 question in the same topic ...

    So, the Problem 1) is solved ..
    About the Problem 2)
    I put the code UIManager.setLookAndFeel(new javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel()) in the main method, like

    When I set the L&F->UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()); then the lines appear .. ??!! .. if I set again the previous value UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName()); .. then the lines desappear ..

    Hi all, I am learning swing and I am trying to modify the

    Uh I think you're mistaken. Whenever in doubt or something doesn't work as expected, check the javadocs. The link to the javadocs can usually be found really easily by typing "java 6 classname". In this case:

    If you want to set the Windows look & feel as your thread title suggests, this was not the method you were looking for as the javadocs will tell you. That method controls if a frame is decorated or not (as the name suggests), which it is by default. Setting it to true will not change anything.
    So what then? You type into Google "java swing windows look and feel". Without quotes of course.

    2- then I put a copy of the file 'forms.css' in the middle tier in the folder :
    apache\apache\htdocs
    so as to be on the path and then modified PM$CSS_FILENAME in all forms to be 'forms.css' instead of 'c:\forms.css' and recompiled.
    3-I put a copy of the file 'laf.jar' in the folder : 'd\Ora_AS\forms\java' in the middle tier and added this path to the classpath environment variable.
    4- I restarted the middle tier and wrote this URL:

    the customers form opened but with no background images,I added the following to the URL '&form=test_laf_color_scheme.fmx',the form opened with the default color scheme to 'purple',I changed it from a drop down list to orange and all buttons background color degraded to orange.
    My questions:
    1-where are the background images ?
    2- I cannot compile the 'laf.pll' file to 'laf.plx',when I compile I get this error:

    I'm curently out of everything so I cannot answer this one. All I can tell is that images are read from the client machine or jar file. If you want read images from the application server, you need the http:// syntax.

    Hi.
    Does anyone knows how to change the default Caspian look and feel to, for example, Nimbus ?
    Or the skin feature turns look and feel setting, as We know in java, unnecessary in javafx ?

    Look&feel only change the SwingComponent,

  • Problem With ButtonUI in an Auxiliary Look and Feel

    This is my first post to one of these forums, so I hope everything works correctly.
    I have been trying to get an axiliary look and feel installed to do some minor tweaking to the default UI. In particular, I need it to work with Windows and/or Metal as the default UI. For the most part I let the installed default look and feel handle things with my code making some colors lighter, darker, etc. I also play with focus issues by adding FocusListeners to some components. I expect my code to work reasonably well no matter what the default look and feel is. It works well with Motif, Metal, and Windows, the only default look and feels I've tested with. What I'm going to post is a stripped down version of what I have been working on. This example makes gross changes to the JButton background and foreground colors in order to illustrate what I've encountered.
    I have three source code files. The first, Problem.java, creates a JFrame and adds five buttons to it. One button installs MyAuxLookAndFeel as an auxiliary look and feel using MyAuxButtonUI for the look and feel of JButtons. The next button removes that look and feel. The next button does nothing except print a line to System.out. The next button installs MyAuxLookAndFeel as an auxiliary look and feel using MyModButtonUI for the look and feel of JButtons. The last button removes that look and feel.
    The problem is, when I install the first auxiliary look and feel, buttons are no longer tabable. Also, they cannot be invoked by pressing the space button when they're in focus. When I remove the first auxiliary look and feel everything reverts to behaving normally. When I add the "Mod" version, button tabability is fine. The only difference is I've added the following code:

    }That strikes me as an odd piece of code to profoundly change the program behavior. Anyway, after adding and removing the "Mod" look and feel, the tababilty is forever fixed. That is, if I subsequently re-install the first look and feel, tababilty works just fine.
    The problem with using the space bar to select a focused button is more problematic. My class is not supposed to mess with the default look and feel which may or may not use the space bar to press the button with focus. When the commented code in MyModButtonUI is uncommented, things behave correctly. Even the statement
    button.getInputMap().remove( spaceKeyStroke );doesn't mess things up after the auxiliary look and feel is removed. So far I've tested this with JRE 1.4.2_06 under Windows 2000, JRE 1.4.2_10 under Windows XP, and JRE 1.5.0_06 under Windows XP and the behavior is the same.
    All of this leads me to two questions.
    1. Is my approach fundamentally flawed? I've extended TextUI and ScrollBarUI with no problems. This is the only problem I've encountered with ButtonUI. My real workaround for the space bar issue is better than the one I've supplied in the example, but it certainly is not guaranteed to work for any arbitrary default look and feel.
    2. Assuming I have no fundamental problems with my approach, it's possible I've found a real bug. I searched the bug database and couldn't find anything like this. Of course, this is the first time I've tried seasrching the database for a bug so my I'm doing it badly. Has this already been reported as a bug? Is there any reason I shouldn't report it?

  • How to give BSP Iview look and feel of portal??

    Hi All,
    I've created a BSP application that I use to create an Iview for portal.
    I thought that if i used htmlb tags that the look and feel of portal would be automatic to my app but its not.
    I've tried assigning portal css classes to a html table but there's no effect.
    I've previewed one of the standard ivews and viewed the source and found the path of the css file.  But when i looked for it on the server, while the out folder was there (com.sap.portal.design.portaldesigndata) , there was no css files in this folder.
    So i'm at a loss.  In summary, how do i get my bsp app to have the portal look and feel?????  I would prefer to use the css files so that if any changes are made to the standard, the changes will be reflected in my custom iviews too.
