[SOLVED] Gnome 3: Turning off screen blankening

I have been trying to find a workaround for screen blankening in gnome 3 for awhile but haven't had much luck. What I am speaking of is simply the lack of an option to choose "never" under "gnome-control-center screen", currently options vary between 1 minute and 60 minutes; I wish to remove it completely.
What I have tried is to inactivate it by disabling idle-activation in dconf-editor, both by gui and command:
gsettings set org.gnome.dektop.screensaver idle-activation-enabled false
This however does nothing, other than disable the actual screensaver, controlled by the value set by:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay value
the "idle-delay" value in itself seem to be controlled by the value set in "gnome-control-center screen" but not the other way around. Meaning the screen will always be turned off when the time specified in "gnome-control-center screen" has elapsed.
The reason for me wanting to disable the screen blankening completely, is because whenever I listen to music, which is often, I have my laptop connected to the TV through HDMI, whenever the given time has passed the TV is turned off and I need to deactivate the blankening manually, which is annoying.
Does anyone have a solution to this issue?
Thanks in advance!

valentinmauro wrote:You may try install http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=49368 (gnome-shell-extension-presentation-mode-git), activate it from gnome-tweak-tool. This will give you a "Presentation Mode" switch on the battery icon, who once activated, will turn off the blankening, and screen lock functions. I hope it will help you. (Sorry for my english, i'm a spanish-speaker)
Thanks a lot man! This solved the issue and did so very good as well, since I can keep all blankening settings to those i prefer and simply use it when I wish to.

    The only way you can turn it off is to close the lid - so you would need an external wired or wireless keyboard and mouse/trackpad attached.

  • Turn-Off screen keeps coming up - maybe broken sleep button?

    hey there,
    i got my 3gs on saturday (t-mobile, germany) and it worked great for exactly one day. on sunday i noticed that the phone woke up from time to time showing the turn off screen, which usually appears if you hold down the sleep button for some seconds (red slider at the top).
    after that, the same screen popped up more often, it even interrupts other actions by appearing on top of applications like phone or mail.
    sometimes the phone will make a screenshot of the current screen if i push the home button, so it seems like the sleep key is stuck.
    the phone has no visible damages, the button looks normal and doesn't act jammed.
    all this happens unpredictably so i can't reproduce it, but its happens pretty often by now and is anoying as ****
    i tried restarting the phone, resetting the prefs, resetting everything, restoring in via itunes etc.
    guess is have to send it back, i just wanted to ask for more ideas and leave a mark for other affected users.
    regards
    jan

    Bad news. I got my 3GS Saturday (6/27) at the local Apple Store. By Sunday morning, I noticed the "random" power off slider. Sometimes, the sleep switch works, sometimes it doesn't. It's gotten progressively worse...after less than 72 hours of ownership. I have a case open with Apple and a Genius appointment in 2 days. In the meantime, I suggest you DO NOT power off your phone. Apple had me do a reset (for the 4th time) and the phone would power down DURING the boot. After 10 minutes..and pressing NOTHING, it suddenly started up and ran. The sleep switch is virtually dead. The Apple rep mentioned something about "cracked circuit boards", but did not elaborate. I suspect something in the assembly process is trashing the board the switch is attached to.

    Unfortunately, you cannot with a 2G iPod touch, and, if your info is correct at the bottom of your post, not with iOS 3. This was a feature for iOS 4, but again, even if you had iOS 4, 2G's weren't given that feature for whatever reason.

  • Turn off screen while using Drive

    Hi,
    How can I turn off screen, to save battery, while using Drive? When I press power button, screen turns off, but I lose voice navigation.

    Hi karlo1020lumia,
    Welcome to the forum!
    What is the model of your device? If you're referring to the Nokia Drive application, this is a normal behavior. The screen must be active for the application to work properly. If your concern is about the phone's battery, you can check this link for the tips on how to prolong the battery life of the device:

    The iOs 5.1 is a huge file that needs to be dowloaded when updating/restoring, your phone hasnt completed the update so its now in recovery mode. Look on the left of itunes, it should say downloads under the store section with a spinning wheel, click that and youll see the update file with a time remaining, wait for that download to finish then try the restore again  and it should work

  • [SOLVED] How to turn off monitor at CLI

    Hi
        I've been trying to find a way to turn off my monitor, but the solutions I've found were almost all for X environment.
        The best hint I've got was add following lines to /etc/rc.local:
    setterm -blank 1
    setterm -powersave on
    setterm -powerdown 1
    With that, monitor was suppose to blank screen after 1 minute and, after another 1 minute, shutdown. But it only blanks and nothing more. Without the first line: "setterm -blank 1", it just don't do anything.
        Does anybody has idea of what else should I try?
        Thanks in advance.

    Hi, Nezmer
    Even with aliases, I would have to type von with monitor turned off.
    I've done a script, witch is not a perfect solution, but works fine.
    monitor_off:
    #!/bin/bash
    # Check if X is running or not, turn off monitor, #
    # wait for a key press and turn it on again. #
    grep_result_file=$PWD'/x_running'
    # Check if X is running.
    ps -e | grep -e "\bX\b" > $grep_result_file
    ps -e | grep -e "\bxorg\b" >> $grep_result_file
    ps -e | grep -e "\bxserver\b" >> $grep_result_file
    ## If you want to check result file, uncomment following lines.
    #echo "===== $grep_result_file - begin ====="
    #cat $grep_result_file
    #echo "===== $grep_result_file - end ====="
    if [ ! -s $grep_result_file ] || [[ $(tty) =~ tty ]] || [[ $(tty) =~ vc ]]; then
    echo 'Detected X not runnig or you are at console...'
    if [ $UID -ne 0 ]; then
    echo 'You need super user privileges to run this script at console.'
    echo 'Rerun as super user or start X and run from a terminal.'
    exit 0
    fi
    turn_off='vbetool dpms off'
    turn_on='vbetool dpms on'
    else
    echo 'Detected X running...'
    turn_off='xset dpms force off'
    fi
    echo 'Turning off monitor...'
    $turn_off
    echo 'Waiting for a key press...'
    read -n1 -s
    echo 'Turning on monitor...'
    $turn_on
    rm $grep_result_file
    echo 'Finished: monitor_off'
    It checks if X is running or not because at X environment vbetool was a little slow, at least for me.
    That's it!
    I hope this could be useful for someone else.
    Thank you for helping, guys.
    Vinícius
    P.S.: I'm setting this thread as solved, but any suggestion about the script is welcome.

  • Stream 7 Can't Turn off screen without putting tablet into sleep mode

    Is there a way to switch the screen off without the tablet going into sleep mode?
    So that I can play music in the background?

    Hey @Crixxtachi ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
    I understand you're experiencing issues playing background music while the screen is off.
    The tablet will work just like a laptop or desktop and we need to look at some Windows settings for this.
    The simplest solution is to access your power management settings, and set the display to go to sleep but not the computer, or at least increase the time before the PC actually enters sleep mode.
    I havn't had a chance to test a Windows tablet yet but I would assume that in the power management settings you should see something on the left hand side that says "Change what pressing the power buttons do." In here you may be able to set it to turn off the display.
    Let me know if that helps.

  • How to turn off screen without passcode lock.

    I just upgraded my wife's iPad 2 from ios 6 to 7.  It used to be when you closed the ipad cover, it would turn off the screen right away.  I would still like it to turn off the screen right away when the cover is closed (so as not to waste batteries) yet NOT require a passcode when opened again (just a slide of the arrow like it used to be).  But right now, if I turn off the lock/unlock feature, and close the lid, the screen will remain full-on until the the auto-lock timer goes into effect - which will be never if I set it to "never".
    I don't want to argue about the merits of having a passcode, I concede all your points, so there is no reason to tell me how stupid I am for not wanting to use one - but I would like to be able to have the screen go off without requiring a passcode to turn it back on.  Is this now impossible?  At the least, it should turn off the screen immediately when the cover is closed, and wait to put it in passcode lock mode until the auto-lock timer expires.
    Is there any way to do this or is this just a case of Apple imposing this security feature our own good? Thanks.
    -J

    Wow.  That was a super-fast answer.  Thanks.  I had seen that optoin and foolishly hadn't tried it because I thought typing my passcode there was just another way to put it into passcode lockdown "immediately".  Well, I said I was stupid. Thanks, it does now work the way it used to and I can still have it require the passcode after a certain timeout period.
