[Solved] Gnome can't log in on first attempt

Hi all,
When I log on to Gnome from GDM, the first attempt gives me the "Oh no, something has gone wrong" screen. The second attempt works.
I've tried the various things suggested in the relevant forum threads (notably fixing the locale with localectl and reinstalling gdk2-pixbuf), to no avail.
Here is what I think is the relevant part of the logs:

  • Can't log into Facebook first time

When I first call up Facebook in my address bar, and try to log in, I get the cursor with the blue ball on it. The second time I call up Facebook, I am able to log in (or if I go through Google, or through my bookmarks). This problem started happening after my AirPort crashed, and was fixed through technical support. Tried using Disk Utility (Repair Permissions) with no effect.

  • Can't log in; too many attempts

I have reset my password but Skype continues to prevent my login and maintains that I've made too many attempts; try again later. How long do I have to wait, and what can I do to solve this? It has not been working for some time. There is no network administrator to reset my login attempts so this is incredibly frustrating.
    Thanks.

  • Gnome login fails at first attempt

    Hi guys,
I'm having a strange problem here.
When I boot my notebook and try to login into Gnome, it constantly fails at the first attempt.
So I click on my username, enter the (correct) password and nothing happens. I cancle it with 'esc', click on the username again, enter the password and I'm in.
This also occurs when I lock my screen.
Any ideas why Gnome tries to troll me and how to fix it?
    Thanks.

  • [Solved] - Can't Log In After Upgrade

Just upgraded and now can't log in. System hangs at 'Reached target Graphical Interace.'
When I go to tty2 and try to log in, I get 'Log incorrect' error message when trying to log in as normal user or root.
Re-booted to runlevel 3 and tried to su to normal user. Get 'su: module is unknown' error.
Checked slim logs and see 'pam_setcred(): module is unknown' error.
    Have re-installed pam and pambase.
Still can't log in. Appears to be a pam problem, but after many searches, can't find solution. Any ideas?
Update: I re-installed libgssglue package and that solved the problem. Not certain why that wasn't updated during the pacman -Su command, but I can now log into my system and everything is normal.

    Hello,
If you are using SSH, I suspect you are hitting bug ID CSCuc03438:
The first SSH login password will always fail
    Symptom:
The first SSH login password will  fail.
    Conditions:
This issue only applies to SSH logins  on MDS 9100 and 9200 platforms. This includes CLI and SNMP  logins.
    Further Information:
Upgrading to defective code will  break working applications such as TACACS or  scripts.
    Workaround:
    Use Telnet
The fix will be in 5.2.6b expected to be available within the next two weeks.
    Best regards,
    Jim

    HI,
The Apple IDs from @mac.com and @me.com (Older MobileMe and more recent iCloud Names) are also Valid AIM Screen names.
Any other sort of Apple ID is not a Valid AIM Name.
A Google ID that is associated with Google Mail Account (And has "Talk" enable on your Google Settings) can be used in iChat as  Jabber Name/ID.  (Google Run  Jabber server).
Jabber and AIM are different IM Services and it is not easy or straight forward to add Buddies from one Service to the Buddy List of another.  (As A Starting point consider it "impossible")
iChat 4 and 5 have links to the registration page of @Mac.com here with a "Get an iChat Account" button in the add (Account) screen  (You select @mac.com or MobileMe and then press the Button - Choosing AIM and then pressing the button used to lead to the AIM registration page but AIM moved their page).
Apple IDs can be any valid email (or an @mac.com or iCloud registration)
Therefore you could make a Google ID into an Apple ID.
However this will not be a valid AIM Screen Name the way @mac.com or MobileMe/iCloud ones are.

  • Can we detect the user first time he logs in ( appln uses embedded ldap )

    Hi,
We are using weblogic embedded ldap for authentication in our application
The first time the user logs in to our applicaiton, we need to detect he is log-in the first time,
so take him to change password page.
Can we do like that ?

    Hi,
By default when you open a report it displays the report exactly as it was last saved. So even if you user views the report
    drills down
then closes the report without saving
    then views the report immediately
the report will open in its original state. There is no setting which can be amended to change this. It is possible to write your own viewer but that would be a significant piece of work

  • [SOLVED] Gnome System Log Functionality

    Hello everyone.
I currently have an Arch install and I prefer to use the Gnome desktop environment.
I really enjoy the functionality of journalctl but I would like to have some ease of use over functionality at times. I noticed that Gnome's System Log viewer only shows pacman.log and boot.log. It was my understanding that this application was developed to show other logs for journalctl. I'm guessing I do not have something installed or enabled.
    Any pointers?
    Thanks.

You should use gnome-logs (https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … nome-logs/), but for me it returning error 404
Indeed it is! Thank you very much for this information. I installed gnome-logs and removed gnome-system-log and everything is great now!

I have tried to get gnome 3.2 to work properly for at couple of hours now..
I get a black screen with a cursor, when i should get the login screen.
And it just stays there at least for 10 min (tested)
To log in i have to restart GDM once or twice..
And then suddenly i get the login screen.. Sometimes rendered correct, other times it is not, but it works ok...
Once i have logged in there is no problem at all..
    /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log - first attempt is a fail..

Stunts wrote:I also had that problem, altough on a different computer. And by themeing not working I mean "I can't change any dconf settings". It was due to ~/.cache being owned by root (go figure).
Unfortunately this is not the case for me.  I erased the directory, just in case (perhaps this was stupid), but this does not help easier.  Somehow gnome-settings-daemon is not started, or crashes somewhere on the way.  When I start it manually, then it works.
I have erased the color plugin (/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libcolor.so) as per advice somewhere else on this forum, but this did not help either.
Most themes don't work on Gnome 3.2 tough due to an API change. You'll just have to wait for the theme authors to update them.
I am using the default theme (I believe), so I think this is not the reason in my case .
EDIT: It was not easy to figure out how to start up gnome-settings-daemon manually. So for the record, I found it in /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon (not in my PATH).

  • HT204053 can't log in with this id with my phone

can't log in  free with this id with my phone
and can not downlode app from the store

Settings/General/Reset   Reset Network Settings. Switch off.  Wait a couple of minutes then switch on and reconnect to your network in Setting/Wifi.
Or.  In Settings/Wifi  Click tap on the blue arrow of your connected network.  Hit Forget this Network. Switch off. Wait a couple of minutes for the Server to disconnct at the ISP.  Switch back on then in settings/wifi  Log in again to your Network as per the first time you connected.
iMessage and Facetime both append routing table entries.  These are sometimes lost during updates. Restting Network and rechecking your imessage and facetime should solve the majority of problems being asked here.

  • I have a problem in imessages I can not log on

I have a problem in imessages I can not log on and update through the application.Every time you logon work shows me a message saying "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later"

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
    Step 1
Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
Restart your broadband device and your router, if different. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 3
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or obviously invalid, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
    Step 4
Back up all data, then take the steps suggested in this support article.
There are five steps in that article. Please take all of them. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If any proxy options are selected, make a note of them and then deselect them. You don’t need to change the bypass or FTP settings. Click OK and then Apply. Test. The result may be that you can't connect to any web server. Restore the previous settings if that happens.
    Step 6
    Select from the menu bar
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
    Close the preference pane.
    Step 7
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
    Step 8
Boot in safe mode and log in. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
If iMessage worked in safe mode, but didn't work when you booted out of safe mode, stop here and post your results.
    Step 9
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Step 10
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 11
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support.

  • I can't log into iMessage; I get the message "Unable to verify email because it is already in use".

I have iOS5 installed on my iPad and iPhone. I can't log into iMessage on my iPad as I get the message "Unable to verify email because it is already in use". Can anyone help me solve this?

I've found the answer to this (at least for me)!
The problem is I have 2 AppleIDs. One from before MobileMe which I use to make iTunes purchases (which is linked to my @me.com email) and the second is my MobileMe email address used for MobileMe syncing.
Each AppleID has to be linked to a separate email address. Because my iTunes Apple ID is linked and verified to my @me.com address. My @me.com AppleID address can't be verified.....quite confusing at first but starts to make sense once you get your head around it!
See this thread for futher explanation: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16414211#16414211

  • [KDE & HAL] I can't log with KDM & HAL daemon doesn't work.

    Hi all,
I opened a new topic because I found anybody who has the same problem. First, I can't log myself with KDM, when I type my password and press enter, it displays me a black screen en goes back to logging session...So I read a comment which is advised to log in with GDM, it works but it's not KDM... I noticed that dbus didn't launch, I fixed that with wiki explanations, but HAL still like that:
:: Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer                                                                       [FAIL]
I think it is a bug of 64bit package, but I am not sure. (32bit version works)
So Have you any ideas ? Thanks for reply.
PS: sorry for ugly english. It's not my native language.
I simply rebooted when it solved the problem...

I am having the problem logging on through KDM as well, was that what was solved by simply rebooting? Someone else is mentioning the problem here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=514615
