[SOLVED] GNOME crashes (probably after full update)

Hi all,
Today I did a full update with "pacman -Syu" and thus, some new packages were updated. However, after the update and reboot (by myself, not requested by the system as I saw that the kernel is updated - to 2.6.32.19 - as well) then GNOME crashes everytime I do "startx" (I don't use any login manager like GDM or SLiM), neither "xinit" nor "xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session" works too.
The problem is that I still see the mouse cursor and sometimes, the wallpaper as well, then GNOME crashed and I was returned to the command line with lots of messages about gnome-panel disconnected from the bus, several messages about gnome-session and /usr/lib/libdevkit, /usr/lib/libdbus, gnome-screensaver etc.
Sorry for didn't provide enough details, but the laptop with Arch64 on it isn't here with me at the moment so I just recall and describe the errors here.
Please give me your advice about this case
Thank you
EDIT: Fyi, I checked the wiki about GNOME here, but I couldn't find any "session" in ~/.gnome2/ in order to "mv ~/.gnome2/session ~/.gnome2/session.old" to refresh the session.
I also did "for d in .gnome* .gconf*; do mv "$d" "$d.old"; done" already, but problem still persists

Thanks wonder, another "pacman -Syu" showed that it updated dbus to 1.2.24 and after a reboot, GNOME is up and running again
Cheers

  • [SOLVED] Gnome crashes at startup

    I have been using MATE for a while, but wanted to check out if the new (3.12) gnome became usable.
    Sadly, just after login gnome crashes: "something went wrong" message and a sad "face" is displayed. But absolutely no debug information is shown.
    I have looked into ~/.xsession-errors but it is empty.
    There is also nothing interesting in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    I have removed gnome-shell-extensions and user extensions, and then even created a "fresh" user.  But none of these helped.

    I guess it is not dbus or bluez issue. Seems more like gtk2/gtk3 issue (I have both installed), so I tried to run gdm instead of lxdm (just in case lxdm loads gtk2), but gdm shows just a black screen.
    #### UPDATE:
    The Error: Requiring NMGtk, version none: Requiring namespace 'Gtk' version '2.0', but '3.0' is already loaded
    was from NetworkManager (I just guessed what NMGtk could mean)
    I had NetworkManager installed and NetworkManager-applet. But the latter was a gtk2 version (from AUR) and Gnome apparently tried to execute it instead of just ignoring it.

    I found out that this error occurs only under Gnome (for me). I can start anjuta in fluxbox. So I made a bug report.
    It seems that anjuta 2.0 will come out soon. A beta version should be released in the next few days (according to this: http://www.anjuta.org/wiki/index.php/Anjuta2).

  • [SOLVED] RT2870 drops connection after pacman update

    Since last pacman upgrade my USB wireless works for just a few seconds while used; while watching transfer speed I see at first full speed and then going slower and slower and in a few secs totally stopped, without being disconnected. I have to reboot to get it working again (worked sometimes by ip link set wlan 0 down & up)
    No difference using Wicd or networkmanager.
    I have never had any issues earlier even since Kernel 3.0.
    Linksys router with standard WPA2 configuration, other computers in house connecting without problems.

    certainly didn't expect this... turned off power saving
    iwconfig wlan0 power off
    and all is well again. Surely doesn't explain why it started after kernel update. But it works...

  • How do I fix my scrabble for iPad, which crashes now after I updated it this am?

    I just updated my Scrabble for iPad this morning, now it crashes while loading and I don't know the solution to this. any ideas? Thanks

    If the item is crashing after an update this is likely to be a problem only the software developers can fix. Go to the App page for the Scrabble and look for any Developer/Support links, and send feedback.
    Regards,

  • [solved] Typing error sound - after last update

    Hey guys, after last update every time i make some mistake while typing on console (rxvt) or at the file search on gnome, this weird sound comes out from pc speaker (some eletric bizzz). I can't find anything related to this, does anyone knows if that is some kind of configuration of Xorg or it's a bug?
    Thanks for any help!

  • Music app crashes constantly after iOS5 update and won't restart.

    I have an iPhone 4 that I updated to iOS5 last week. The first time I tried the new Music App, it ran very sluggishly. I then connected it to my JVC car stereo via the dock connector (Made for iPod), and the Music App crashed. After crashing, it just shows a blank white screen when you try to start the app, then crashes again after about ten seconds.
    I can delete all the music from the iPhone via iTunes, and then re-add it, which seems to work for getting the Music App working again. But as soon as I try to connect it to the dock connector on my car stereo, it crashes again as previously described. Grrr.

    No answers, only wanted to commiserate—I had a similar problem, and now my iPhone 5 running iOS 5 is showing the blank white screen for the Music app every time. No music showing anywhere, even when NOT connected to the dock in my car. I was wondering if the bug was related to the number of songs/size of files (since I have a crapload of music). This has to be happening to others...

  • [SOLVED] Skype crashing soon after login

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm using OSS.
    I installed skype-oss and successfully managed to use it yesterday.
    I tried to revert back to ALSA this morning, but as I wasn't able to get it working, I decided to stick to OSS.
    Skype just crashes soon after I login. I've tried what was suggested here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sk … mmediately , but it hasn't helped.
    Contents of:
    1. /etc/modprobe.d/alsa_blacklist.conf

    Is there anything I can do to get Skype working again?

    Ehm... Does your sound work with oss? As in can you hear sound?
    Try fresh Skype configuration directory:
    mv ~/.Skype ~/.Skype_bcc
    To revert back to ALSA you need to uninstall OSS and remove the blacklisted modules, and then restart or
    modprobe soundcore

  • [SOLVED] Awesome doesn't start after full update.

    Well, I didn't change nothing in my rc.lua and, after update, awesome doesn't start.
    I tried to debug with Xephyr, but, there aren't errors in the terminal.
    I'm new to awesome, is this tipical?
    Last edited by s922183t (2011-06-17 03:13:50)

    Well, I discovered the cause:
    I use alsa, but it isn't working, I don't know why. When I exec alsamixer as root it says cannot connect. When I use as my user open but, instead of my card (intel), it's PulseAudio.
    I use the volume control widget from vicious, then, it wasn't loading.
    Thanks you all by attention and patience.

  • HP Pavilion Elite e9220f crashing repeatedly after critical update

    HP Pavilion Elite e9220f, Windows 7 64-bit.
    Crashed on 5/9/13, wouldn't reboot. Freezed with blinking cursor in upper left corner of blank screen after HP splash screen.
    Changed HD from RAID to IDE mode in BIOS and Windows started but crashed with blue screen on trying to install the IDE controller driver automatically after start-up. Blue screen crash codes indicated the hard drive controller was the source.
    System Restore lists several critical updates for Windows over the last few weeks. I ran System Restore in safe mode to 5/4/13 restore point, then rebooted to safe mode for confirmation of restore, and it then booted normally and successfully installed the IDE controller driver, but then crashed again as soon as subsequent critical updates were reinstalled. Disabling Windows Update via services.msc then restoring to 5/4/13 again finally stabilized the system, able to use normally without crashing.
    To try to solve the underlying problem preventing further critical updates and allow me to turn on Windows Update again, I found the firmware update on HP's site for the hard drive, WDC WD10EADS-65M2B0, from version B0 to BX. However, after updating the firmware to BX, Windows now crashes upon starting even still at restore point 5/4/13 or even all the way back to 4/28/13, and now before it can even attempt to install the IDE controller. In otherwords, updating the firmware made it worse. The system is again unsable.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    JoEbYX

    I agree that it is inexplicable, if that was indeed the case.
    If the PC has a single drive, then it makes zero sense to use RAID mode. RAID is an acronym which stands for redundant array of inexpensive disks. The use of any form of RAID (0-5) requires a minimum of two physical hard disks.
    AHCI and IDE are the only viable options with a single hard disk.
    Did you make a backup or image of the hard disk?
    What is the installed OS?
    You will need to  enable the SATA msAHCI driver in the operating system as this Microsoft document explains. Use the Microsoft Automated Fixit on the document to resolve the issue. It will take care of the registry change required. Afterwards you will need to enter the BIOS and verify the SATA mode is set to AHCI and if not, change it to AHCI before the next boot into Windows.

  • [SOLVED] Audio not working after system update

    Hi all,
    About 4 days ago, I installed Arch Linux (full systemd) with LXDE on a Dell Inspiron Mini netbook. Everything seemed to be OK until today, when I did pacman -Syu and then installed the SLiM login manager. After rebooting there was no audio. I am not sure if this happened because of the upgrade or because of SLiM. I am pretty new to systemd, so I could be missing something very obvious. I have tried many things so far, with no success:
    1) I disabled SLiM and instead started X from the terminal at boot, and nothing happened.
    2) I have removed my username from the 'audio' group, added it again, removed it, etc... No change.
    3) I downgraded systemd, systemd-sysvcompat, and xine-lib (just in case) to their previous version and nothing happened.
    4) I seem to be detecting the sound card correctly. If I run "aplay -l" as my normal, non-root user I get the same output as the root user:
    **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC272 Analog [ALC272 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    5) If I login with SLiM, my session seems to be setup correctly, as far as I can tell:
    $ loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID
    Id=1
    Timestamp=Mon, 2012-10-29 00:38:35 EDT

    State=active
    KillProcesses=no
    IdleHint=no
    IdleSinceHint=0

    6) I reinstalled pulseaudio, pulseaudio-alsa, alsa-plugins, and alsa-oss... Nothing.
    7) I do not have the ~/.asoundrc file.

    Thanks Rasi. Incidentally, I just solved the issue a few minutes ago and was about to post the answer, but yes, you are right... the device was muted. It's embarrassing, but it did not seem obvious to me that the device was muted... All the sliders seemed OK, with nice, green values between 50 and 100. Also, the LXDE volume control was unmuted with a value between 50% and 100%, and I ran the 'amixer sset Master unmute' command several times. Clearly, this command does not do the job.
    What I was missing is nicely described in the PulseAudio troubleshooting:
    If one experiences no audio output via any means while using ALSA, attempt to unmute the sound card. To do this, launch alsamixer and make sure each column has a green 00 under it (this can be toggled by pressing 'm')
    I was not pressing 'm'... I know it's on the wiki, but this did not seem to be a PulseAudio issue, which was working perfectly yesterday and was not upgraded, so the PulseAudio troubleshooting was not the first place I looked for solutions. I wonder why the device got muted in the first place.
    Thanks again for the help!

  • [SOLVED] kwin acting strange after last update

    Hi,
    After I upgrades yesterday, compositing in kwin was not working when the setting was on openGL. It works when I use Xrender but very very very slow. I'm rather new to arch linux. Somebody a solution?
    It was a big upgrade. Something wrong with the new radeon drivers?
