[solved] Gnome-do can't open home folder

I've been using gnome-do for a while now and like it, but I can't get it to open my home folder.  This is with the docky theme.  If I try to use it to open my home folder.
What I mean is type super-space to bring up the text input box and then type "home", if I run the action to open home folder it brings up the busy cursor icon but then never opens the home folder.
I can work around this by enabling the files and folders plugin and then typing my username, but I would rather have the home folder thing work.
Anyone else using gnome-do on Arch have this problem or any idea why I'm having this problem?

Well apparently this is a known issue that the gnome-do devs are not too interested in fixing https://bugs.launchpad.net/do/+bug/290136
Edit: Actually looks like it was a nautilus bug, there is a workaround in the bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/do/+bug/290136/comments/48, you only need to make the following change: in /usr/share/applications/nautilus-home.desktop, change "Exec=nautilus --no-desktop" to "Exec=nautilus --no-desktop ."  - Just add a space and a period.

  • Can't open download folder in my mac

help!!!! I can't open download folder anymore. Anyone can help me out?

My case is little different than what you said above. When I click the Download Fold that is in the dock, it just pops up a blank window. Then even I click the Finder in dock, it pops up blank window as well. However I still can open Finder with "Conmand + N". I clicked Download Folder the one in the home folder, it does not respond.
Just let you know I am using Lion os x, the folders in the home folder can not be modified and deleted.
I tried using spotlight to open it, but it still doesn't work.

  • Can not open any folder

can not open any folder on desktop

You have read pririlege for the folder?
Finder's Go menu -> Go to Folder...  "~/Library/Preferences", then move to rash the file, "com.apple.finder.plist" then relogin could solve the problem.

  • Time Machine Can't Access Home folder

I am using OS X 10.8.3 and my home folder seems to have been deleted without saving (malicious activity by family memeber with somehow gained access to his mother's account that has admin privledges).  I've tried restore via Time Machine (TM) which has worked in the past for minor file recovery issues but, I cannot access the "home" folder on the backup (external) drive any longer; I can "see" the home folder, but it is lightly shaded.  I also am having trouble rebuilding my iTunes library - I can see most, but not all of my tunes - other cannot be found on either the iMac-HD or the TM Backup.  Finally, not all of the iTunes purchased material is accessible via the iCloud download (tunes and app downloads).  So I am pretty much dead in the water.  I hate bringing up  stupid questions but I am not a tech sorrt of guy - I can use a hammer without having to know the physics of inelastic collisions, so my apologies.  Any suggestions?

Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) and select Restore From Time Machine Backup from the OS X Utilities screen. Select the snapshot you want to restore from. All data on the volume will be erased and replaced with data from the snapshot.

  • After latest os X update February 2012, the Finder can not open a folder anymore and asks to restore the windows or not

After installing the latest update - automatic updates and after rebooting without any error, the finder application can not open any folder or device anymore.
Seems the appication crashes after which the following pop-up appears :
    Anybody any idea ?

    I would do the following:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • FileVault did not open home folder-- Can't login

Okay, so just today I upgraded to Leopard, after the CD finished downlaoding, I logged into my account, and the Updater wanted me to update to 10.5.1, so I did. Updater asked me to restart, and after clicking the restart button, FileVault (I have it enabled) asked me if I wanted to recover disk space (it does this all the time) I skipped the process, and my computer restarted. It brought me to the login screen, and I clicked on my account, entered my password, and then a window pops up, telling me:
"Your FileVault-protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired.
Click OK to repair the folder and continue logging in.
Click Cancel Login to log in as a different user."
I chose okay, then waited a few hours to see if anything would happen. It didn't. This account is the only adminastrator account on this computer...
    Anyone know what to do??

Understand that what has happened is that your FileVaulted volume, which is simply a large, glorified encrypted sparsefile, has become corrupt and requires repair. The problem is getting access to it and performing the repair. Please understand that the following fix worked for me and may not work for you.
First, chances are you have only one user on your computer. Even if you have two, we should start fresh with a new admin user. The following steps will reset your Mac to think that is has just received a brand new setup of OSX:
    1. Reboot
    2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
    3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    * mount -uw /
    * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    * shutdown -h now
Now, booting up your computer, enjoy the pretty light show, take a large breath, hold it for 10 seconds, then let it go. Grab a cup of coffee or a loved one and cuddle during this inspiring intro. Now, back to business. Setup your account as you would in any other circumstance. Just make sure you dont name your username the same as the one you used on this computer before. Make sure your password is longer than 8 characters as well (or so I have heard).
Now that you are inside your computer, you see that you still do not have access to your data. Lets take out the crowbar and proceed with the following steps:
    4. Go to Macintosh HD/Users/ and locate the folder named the PREVIOUS administrator's account name which you cannot access. Click on the folder and go to FILE | GET INFO and under Sharing and Permissions ADD yourself as a user with Read & Write privileges.
    5. Go inside this folder and perform the same command on the Username.sparseimage file as in step 4. Note the path of this file (i.e. /Users/UserName/UserName.sparseimage)
    6. Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Terminal
    7. Type: sudo hdiutil attach /Users/username/username.sparseimage -nomount
    8. A bunch of funky things will happen, but it eventually should list a number of volumes, one with an HFS attached to it, note if it says disk1s1 or disk2s2 or whatever.
    9. Type: sudo fsck_hfs -f /dev/rdisk2s2 (rdisk2s2 being where the HFS was from step 8, adding an "r" at the front)
If fsck_hfs bails because of too many errors, just repeat until it says the FS is fine. That irks the bejeezus out of me as well, but has always worked for me so far.
    10. Type: sudo fsck_hfs -frd /dev/rdiskXsY
This will rebuild the catalog file, which was my problem.
Now, finally, go back to that path where you found your sparsimage file, double-click it, enter your password and you just may be able to read the data! Success!!!
If you are smart, like I am at this very second, back up the data immediately to DVD. Once you have your backups, reinstall everything and just drop your data back in. Make it clean!
Remember, FileVault is a bitchen feature! But if you are ignorant enough, like I was, not to back up your data, whose fault is that? Cheers!

  • [Solved][VIM] E484: Can't open file syntax.vim

    Hi all,
I've installed Archlinux few days ago on my netbook and yesterday i decided to configure Vim using plugins.
During plugins configuration, i messed up and i decided to revome all Vim files in my ~ folder in order to restart configuration.
However, since I've executed the `rm -R .vim .vimrc .viminfo` command, I can't re-activate Vim's syntax coloration using `syntax on` into my .vimrc file nor into Vim directly.
Here is the error message when I start Vim :
    Error detected while processing /home/romain/.vimrc:
    line 1:
    E484: Can't open file /home/romain/.vim/syntax/syntax.vim
Press ENTER or type command to continue
I've found this topic on BBS which seems to be the same problem as me but reinstalling vim or vi doesn't solve this problem.
I've tried to copy this syntax.vim file from /usr/share/vim/vim73/syntax/syntax.vim but it doesn't solve the problem and I want a clean solution without hacking my ~ folder ; moreover, this bug also appears being root while I haven't configured vim with the root account so it may be a problem into Vim's installation folders or something.
Thanks for your help and sorry I my english contains mistakes,
    MicroJoe.

  • Can not open download folder in Finder after update to OS X Lion

Hi there. I have recently upgraded to OS X Lion. The upgrade was smooth. But since the upgrade I am unable to open Download folder in Finder. If I select Download in Finder's sidebar nothing happens. Finder won't display content of Download folder. If I go and select Home folder in sidebar, Finder displays content of my Home folder including Download. If I double click Download folder to access it nothing happens again. Cant access it. But if expand download folder using triangle next to it, Finder will expand me Download folder and show it's content...
I tried to verify and repair my permissions with Disk Utility, but did not solve my issuel. It is very frustrating scenario, since Download folder is something I access every day multiple times.
Any ides what can I do?

I found a solution that worked for me. Seems like my firewall did not accept the afp connection permissions anymore after installing lion... Since everything worked well turning off the firewall.
So if you don't want to keep your firewall disactivated here is what worked for me:
    - Leave your firewall activated.
    - Turn OFF afp file sharing in the sistem prefs
    - Restart your Machine
    - Turn ON afp file sharing
    - You should now get a message if you want to accept afp connections...
    - click YES
Seems like this resets somehow the afp permissions in the firewall settings
Everything fine on my network now.

  • Nautilus Only Opens Home Folder

Hi, for a couple of months nautilus only opens the home folder.
I tried to add another folder to sidebar via launcher (nautilus --no-desktop /home/user/folder) but when I click the icon it says "starting file manager" and after a while it just vanishes, same applies for the media I insert such as USB sticks, a message pop-ups and asks if I want to "open with file manager" if I click it same thing happens. Only exception to this is if nautilus is already running; then everything works as expected.
If try to open a folder from console using the command "nautilus --no-desktop /home/user/folder" I only get a "Segmentation Fault" error and nothing else.
I created a new user and tried the same thing with it, everything works like a charm. However despite I removed "~.gconf/apps/nautilus", "~.config/nautilus" and everything related to nautilus in "~.local/share/applications/" from my users home folder, I couldn't solve the problem.
I checked my drive for any empty CD/DVD and mounted other filesystems manually since I read somwhere if I have a usb stick plugged in and unmounted can cause the issue. But again no use.
So if you guys can figure this out and help me it will be most appreciated.
BTW: I am not using nautilus-open-terminal extension.

If you've closed all Finder windows and then log out,
logging back in is similar to clicking the Finder's
icon in the Dock, and a new single window will be
    opened.
No, this is either a restart or shutdown/restart sequence. I don't use log out and log in, as I am the only one using the computer.
If you click on the Finder icon in the Dock, and
there are currently no open Finder windows, the
Finder will open a new window to the default location
specified in the General pane of the Finder's
Preferences. In other words, it behaves like other
    "document-based" applications such as Safari,
    TextEdit, etc.
Could the Finder icon be registering a mouse click (that may not actually be there) on boot?
I did discover that if I booted into safe mode and deleted the two previously mentioned preference files (com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlists.plist), the issue went away for about a week -- but the problem returned this morning.

  • Leopard can't find home folder

I moved my home folder, using Apple's instructions, to an external drive.
It is located on a partition on a western digital my book studio 500GB. There is nothing else on that on that partition.
I turn off my iMac last night and came back to it this afternoon. When I booted it up, and entered my password, it loaded what seemed to be, a version of Leopard that you would see when you reinstall the system. It had the standard background and dock icons etc. However, the home folder had only 3 items, Desktop, Library and one other folder I can't remember.
I did a bit of investigating and found out the home folder with 3 sub folders, was in fact on the main HD.
I opened a finder window of the Home partition, cmd clicked on the top of the window to show the path, and instead of being "My Imac>Home>" it was "My Imac>Volumes>Home"
The level: Volumes was in a lighter font, I presume indicating it is a hidden "folder".
I went into system preferences>accounts, unlocked it and right clicked on my account, into advanced options (this is the way I told it originally where the new home folder was) and saw that in had the home folder in /Volumes/Home 1/Alex
Alex is the name of my home folder.
I hit choose, and relocated my home folder, but this time instead of Home 1, it had Home 2.
I restarted and when I entered my password it brought up an error.
*You are unable to log into the user account "Alex" at this time.*
*Logging into the account failed because an error occurred*
I tried a few times but no joy.
I inserted the install disk and repair permissions and the actual disk of both Macintosh HD and Home. I also repaired the entire HD that Home is located on. It said all drives were fine.
After restarting it logged on but to the same state as before. I re-did all the steps and tried again. Back in circles. Except repairing the disks didn't work this time.
I hooked it up by target disk mode to my MBP and created the necessary folders to simulate a home folder (leaving the library folder as it was) but this didn't help.
My best diagnoses is that the iMac thinks there is a volume called Home 1 (or 2 or whatever) and that is where the Home folder should be. But in fact it is just on the drive Home.
Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?
I tried ringing Apple support, but aside from telling me that you can't move the home folder, or tell system preferences where it is, and leave me on hold for ages while he sees if my iMac is within its 90 day phone support, they did nothing. Oh and it took 15 minutes before he understood I wasn't having trouble resetting the password. They should really have a few levels of support, noobs, the average joe and guys who know what they are talking about to a pretty good extent (i.e. me)
I'm not great with terminal but have used it a bit with very clear instructions, so go for any suggestions and I'll have a shot
    Regards

Ye I did that but no joy, different password still doesn't work.
Without trying to sound ungrateful at all (your very helpful ) and also to save your own time replying, I am pretty well aquatinted with OS X and stuff like resetting the password, I find, is pretty straight forward Again, your input is greatly appreciated and most stuff with troubleshooting is fine (root user, passwords, DU, Install disks etc) terminal and the very obscure or unused utilities may not be as familiar but are still OK Hope I didn't offend you
So really my biggest task now is to get into the system and change the Home folder location, something I can't do via target disk mode etc.
    Regards

  • Finder crash when opening home folder

when opening my home folder, which is set to 'show as icons' the Finder crashes every time. any other setting, such as 'list' or 'column' is fine, but when I select 'show as icons' it crashes.
I've already done such things as repair permissions, clean caches etc, I even deleted my finder.plist, but nothing works. As I can't read crash report I've attached one here, hoping someone can help me and point me to a possible solution.

I would have also tried the Finder plist and I like to include com.apple.sidebarlists.plist too. Did you log out and back, or restart immediately after trashing the plist? That's necessary with Finder.
If that doesn't help you might try /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    Let us know.

  • Can't open 'Downloads' folder. Finder crash.

Can't open my 'Downloads' folder. Every attempt to open it crashes Finder and restores a new finder window. However I have no problems with other folders. I appreciate any input or suggestions. Using a Late 2009 White Unibody Macbook with OS X Lion 10.7.1.
    Thanks.

    Solved.
Went into terminal and deleted the corrupted .DS_Store file.

  • Finder cannot open HOME folder - "There is no default application specified

HELP! Starting this morning, after a reboot, Finder will not open my home folder. If I open a Finder window and try to open "jen" which is my wife's home folder (and what we're logged in as) Finder says "There is no default application specified to open the document Jen". If I go to this folder through Macintosh HD->Users->Jen I get the same message.
If I click on this folder in the Finder window it doesn't show an arrow indicating that it is a directory and under the "Preview" pane, it shows the house icon, but says the "Kind" is a "Package" (??).
HOWEVER, everything else still works. The desktop is populated. All the applicatiosn like Itunes and Iphoto find the photos and songs.
If I go into Utilities->Terminal and use the bash shell I can see that the /Users/jen folder IS intact and all of the files are there.
Is this some type of Finder damage?
Ideas on how to fix?? I'm a Windows and Linux expert, but pretty new to Mac, so I'm perplexed.
I thought maybe a permissions issue, and I tried the disk utility->Repair disk permissions and that didn't help.
This is what the "jen" folder shows for permissions and attributes in the bash shell:
    cd /Users
    ls -l
    drwxr-xr-x 28 jen jen 952 Dec 21 09:38 jen
I MIGHT have injected this problem, because I was having a problem where I could not see volumes on the desktop when I double clicked a DMG file (it worked before), and I was playing around with a few DMG images, and I tried one on the Apple website called dragster which said it changed Finder and then I uninstalled it. I think the problem started after this.
I THINK everything else is fine, from what I can see.
    Help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Greg

For those who may hit this problem in the future, I figured what my solution was, and called Apple support and they confirmed it was my best option. To fix it:
    1. In NetInfo Manager, enable root access.
    2. Log off.
    3. Login as root userid with the root password (make sure you set one in NetInfo Manager)
    4. As root, copy the folder, which Finder thinks is a 'package' to a backup drive or if no backup drive then some other location outside of /Users.
NOTE: I found if I clicked on the Users/<userid> folder once to highlight it in Finder, then under the gear icon chose "Open Package Contents" it would launch a finder window and show you all of the files in the users folder - that way you could grab them and copy them over if you wanted to do it that way, but dragging the 'package' over works fine too. One other option, in the bash shell IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE:
    cp -R /Users/<userid> <backupdrive>/<backupfolder>
    5. Once you are sure you've backed up the damaged users folder, go into System Preferences -> Accounts. Delete the damaged users userid. When it prompts you if you want to delete immediately, you should probably not click that but instead click the button to create a backup image of the users home folder. This will create an image in /home/Delete_users/<userid>.dmg that is a another backup of the users data. Then the /Users/<userid> data is deleted and the account is gone.
    6. Recreate the user account, setup the same settings as you used before.
    7. Copy the data from the backup drive/folder to the new /Users/<userid> folder. You don't have to copy all of the data back, just the users settings and personal files. You can find info on what is users personal folders vs control folders elsewhere. I guess if in doubt copy it all back over.
    8. Next, you need to give the userid permission to their files since they will be set to be owned as root since root copied them out and back in.
    In Applications->Utilities->Terminal
    chown -R <userid>:<userid> /Users/<userid>
    So I did:
    chown -R jen:jen /Users/jen
That sets jen to be owner of all files and folders under /Users/jen
    9. Logoff as root.
    10. Login as the once damaged userid. It should work, all settings should still be intact, and you should have a normal 'home' folder you can get into through Finder.
    11. Go into NetInfo manager and under the 'Security' menu 'Disable root access' to disable the root userid again.
    12. Keep your backup of your home folder for a while until your comfortable everything has been restored.
There MIGHT be an easier way to reset this, maybe with some AppleScript, but I don't know it.
    There you go.

  • Can't open Home or Apps from Dock

    Hi all,
I've just done an Archive & Install and now can't open the Home or Applications folders from the Dock. When I click on them in the Dock, an icon that looks like a cassette tape appears for a second, then disappears. I can open Home and Apps from the HD folder on my desktop.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks heaps,
    Andrew

I can put the Applications and Home icons in the Dock (next to the Trash) but neither folder will open from there. I have to go to my Mac HD folder on the desktop to open both. It seems there's some problem with the shortcut, but the actual folders are there and open OK, just not from the Dock.
    Yes, Trash opens fine.
If it sheds any light, I'm noticing strange things since doing the Archive & Install. For example, Column View doesn't stick (after setting it in Apple > Dock > Dock Preferences to 'always open in column view') and I'm unable to download Acrobat Reader (it returns an error message saying it's not compatible with my system). And others things I won't bore you with...

  • Home Folder greyed out/Can't access home folder

I'm completely unable to view my home folder after a fresh install of mountain lion.  I copied my user folder over and created a new user based on that folder.  As you can see it will only show me the large home icon instead of my column view.  It is able to be accessed from other views however... it's not consistent.  There seems to be a huge finder issue with this user.  I've also made a test user and everything over there works fine so it's only on this side.
Here is what it looks like from the other user:
Still greyed out... I've tried everything from help from genii at the store to friends who know UNIX well, I've reset ACLs and repaired permissions ot no avail.  If you have any ideas for me please lemme know and I'll try them.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
