[SOLVED] GNOME: Fullscreen windows are click-through

When I put an application on fullscreen, for example a Flash video, HTML5 video or a game, and try to click anywhere on it, it'll click through the application, on the app that's behind it. I have found the workaround to put it on its own workspace, although sometimes the rightclick gets triggered from the background when I do this. (very inconsistent, and sometimes it gets triggered on left click as well)
I do not have issues when running any of these applications as windowed. I am running GNOME 30.14.2. Does anyone know of a fix for this?
Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have the same problem in Gnome 3.14 and now 3.16. Window focus is set to sloppy, but (left) clicking in fullscreen apps clicks through, resulting in a right click popup or apps behind the fullscreen app being pushed to the top, as Binero experienced. I tried changing to all the window focus modes, and setting it to 'click' works best, but not completely. I use 2 monitors, and with 'click' if I select a window on the other screen and then click on the fullscreen app on the first screen, it clicks through again, so not a working solution.
In any case, using 'sloppy/mouse' window select mode is essential for me, so using 'click' would be a regression for my workflow, even if it worked.
I really hope there's a solution to this, as it really affects the use of my PC. Not sure if this is an Arch bug, since I've not experienced in Fedora w. Gnome-Shell (though this is with Gnome 3.10, have to try a newer Fedora release).

  • [SOLVED] Gnome & Firefox: Fonts are too small

    Hi,
I am really used to using firefox in Windows XP where fonts are readable out-of-the-box. By this I mean I didn't have to fiddle with firefox when I installed it, the fonts looked great.
Now that I'm using Gnome, I see that firefox's fonts are really too small. The glyphs are smashed together too. How can I get the fonts to look decent in firefox? I'm not sure if this is an OS-level setting or a firefox-level setting.

If you have an LCD monitor, try this:

  • Safari quits when all open windows are clicked to close

I have a G4 Mac OS 10.3.9....when I am on any given page(s) and I choose to close it....entire safari "unexpectantly quits" and I have to open a new window all over again and find where I left off.

Any insight would be great as to what I can do to clear this up.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Shell doesn't search through recently used items

A while back I ran chattir +i on ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel because of a bug that gnome shell had where it would crash while searching for recently used items. Since I've now updated to 3.4.1, I figured the bug might have been fixed, so I ran chattr -i to allow writing to the file again. The file has since filled up with my recently used items, but they don't seem to appear in the gnome shell search.

  • Since the most recent Firefox update I have been unable to click through links from Windows Live to Firefox, but it works for Internet explorer?? Any explanations?

Firefox is my default browser and since the most recent Firefox update I have been unable to click through links I receive from Windows Live Email to the Firefox browser, but it works if my browser is set to IE9?? I have checked the defaults settings and both are fine, so Any explanations or ideas on how to solve this?

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 3
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 4
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 5
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 6
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 7
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

  • Clicking through windows/apps

    Hi forums,
I've upgraded to Mav on my four-year-old Macbook Pro 15" and yeah, some things are slow but I have a much more egregious problem: - sometimes (and by no means as rarely as I'd like) the system completely looses track of which windows are in front, active, clicked-on etc.
The issue usually manifests as I cmd-tab between open programs - suddenly, even though I've, say, tabbed over to Safari, the latest Finder window is still hovering in front. But it's inactive, so trying to click it means I click right through, hitting something behind it, usually the visible one - but not always, for example if what's behind is an application with multiple open windows, I may find the click was registered in a window down the stack somewhere.
At this point I feel the whole thing descends into a sort-of scooby-doo-esqe madness; I am unable to regain control of which app/window is in front, and clicking and/or tab'ing seems to just bring forward a cascade of random objects from the various interfaces currently open... I actually have no remedy at this time, except to close all windows, sometimes even restart Finder (or the whole machine) - I wonder, have anyone else had this kind of thing happen, and if so, found a way to fix it?

Does Alt-Tab work? Maybe your terminal is holding focus instead of releasing it when you click outside onto chrome.

    Hello :)
I have a click through report and the requirement that I have is that I should be able to open it in a new window. The report has lot of parameters and I tried to use this query but it gives me error that parameter is missing

    Hi,
You need to use the URL of report server rather than report manager. Modify the URL like:
    ="javascript:void(window.open('http://servername/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2ffolder_name%2fdrillthrough_report_name&rs:Command=Render

I want to open a folder in a separate window by clicking on it.  For some reason when I click on a folder it just replaces the one I was just in.  I want them both to be open at the same time without having to go through several steps. Old apple operating systems made it easy to have several folders open at one time.

Eric, thanks that works but seems like an extra added step also to do it that way.  I've got to move and organize a ton of files and I'm looking for a easy way to get this done.  I could also open the folder into a separate tab and then drag the tab out so it becomes an open window but thats a lot of fussing around also with extra steps.  Not sure why these newer operating system seems more confusing and less user friendly than what they used to.  In the past I could just click on any folder and it would open in a separate window making it really easy to copy or move files from one place to the other just by simply dragging them from one window to the other.  Seems like I'm going through several extra steps now to do a simple task.

  • When opening a new window, any clicks within the new window click through to the original window so you can't scroll or save from the new window.

Anytime that a new window is opened (such as when sending an email message or opening a pdf) I am unable to click on the new window. I can't click send or click on the scroll bars of the new window. If I attempt to click on the window it clicks on whatever is behind the window instead. If the new window opens with a cursor within it then I am able to type or scroll through with keyboard arrows, but cannot click or use the mouse scroll buttons. I also cannot choose items from drop down menus with the mouse (even in the original window). I must use the keyboard arrows to select any menu options.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3.8 annoying window resize problem

    Hello all fellow early-adopters :-)
A very annoying quirk I've noticed, moving from GNOME 3.6 to 3.8, is that it no longer remembers, nor retains, the size/positions I set for many of my application windows. For example, my mail client (Evolution) is sized to fill most of my screen (centrally), with Empathy and Skype as long narrow windows on both sides - giving me a nice, broad "communications" overview on that particular desktop (with dev tools etc open on others).
On 3.6, this layout was retained during my session, as well as next time I started these apps up.
In GNOME 3.8, not only does it insist that these windows are always started as small little bunched-up windows that I need to resize, but every time a window displays a notification/warning (message in internal yellow bar inside the window - such as loss of internet connection, mail retrieval failure etc) it resizes the windows spontaneously to a stupid, small size that overlays the other windows. This is driving me crazy!
Where can I learn a bit more about how window sizing / positioning works in GNOME 3.8, or is it finally time to switch to awesome wm? I want to love GNOME 3.8, I really do. It's so slick, but so... unpolished.
I want to dig in an assist with problems like these, but I need some pointers to some background material first to understand the problem. Is it the window manager? Is it the app?
** UPDATE: Doing a full system upgrade, as of May 18, 2013, has resolved this annoying problem. My windows now stay where they belong, and start with the same size they were closed with. GNOME is now pleasant to use again :-)

I really like GNOME 3.x though (and would like to understand the windowing behaviour), but if the annoying quirks are insurmountable, I will happily switch.
Man I love GNOME 3.x. I admire the courage they had to change, basically, everything, and I find myself more productive with my GNOME 3 Arch box than with my good ol' Slackware KDE 4 box. I just hate those bugs - for example I filed a task in their bugtracker for this window resize problem I have with gedit. If it's a love/hate relationship, I think it's marriage ^_^
With the 3.8 upgrade, deadbeef was having a similar problem with window size/position. I just recompiled it against the latest GTK+3 package upgrade (that came after the 'big upgrade' here on Arch) and it was fixed. But not with gedit
    bwat47 wrote:
Man I really hope this gets fixed soon, because aside from this one incredibly annoying issue I am loving gnome 3.8.
I get the feeling gnome badly needs more beta testers, sizable regressions like this in "stable" releases happen way too often sad.
I get the exact same feeling. Well bugs exist everywhere, there's no denying. But I think it would be wiser to 'alternate' the nature of each major stable release - one focusing on new features and one focusing on fixing bugs. For example if the only new features in GNOME 3.10 were the AppsFolder full implementation and the introduction of gnome-calendar, and the rest of the development cicle being devoted to fix bugs, I'd be more than happy.
Like Fedora and Ubuntu, the fixed 6-month release cycle colaborates with the bugs. They don't do like Debian or Slackware which are released 'when they are ready'.
EDIT: fout (yet) another bug. At least with facebook chat (haven't tested with other telepathy plugins) the buddy tray icon appear duplicate. Anybody with the same issue?

  • [solved] [gnome] Switching between windows: now grouped per program?

I have a question how I can change the behavior in Gnome regarding open windows for programs & switching between those windows.
OpenBox & LXDE - every instance of a program has its own icon.
If I have Chromium running in two windows, and LXTerminal in an other window I have 3 icons.
With ALT + TAB I can switch between all windows.
Gnome: every program has its own icon, no matter how many instances / windows are open
If I have Chromium running in two windows, and LXTerminal in an other window I have 2 icons: one for Chromium and one for LXTerminal.
With ALT + TAB I can switch only between the two programs.
The icon for Chromium has a downwards-arrow, and if you wait some time, you can choose between the two Chromium screens.
How can I configure Gnome to have icons for every open window instance, and not grouped per program?
I prefer to use ALT + TAB to switch between all open windows (an not only between the open programs).

    Thanks for your fast response!
I haven't worked with Gnome Extensions before (I used to have Gnome 2 on my Debian machine), so I had to find my way regarding how to install:
After registration at https://extensions.gnome.org/ I logged in & browsed to the extension that you recommend and just used the switch to switch it on.
    It works great! Thanks!

The browser is working fine but it insists on opening a big ugly Firefox click-through window before launching. Also, the program icon cannot be removed from the desktop either. Why? Assistance appreciated.
    Cheers, Richard

If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder], so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

  • Nano screens are delayed when clicking through

    Hello
My Nano has had this issue and I don't know if this is normal or not. When I click through screens, often the next screen is delayed in popping up like a hesitation. I think it is more noticeable when a song is playing.
When I click the next screen it sometimes hesitates, then the whole screen appears redrawn. Is this normal operation for these ipods? I think I only am noticing it recently.
By the way I just updated to iTunes 7 and restored my ipod to factory settings. But I haven't seen any difference.
Also in previous versions of iTunes, if your library was bigger than the ipod a dialog box came up asking if you wanted iTunes to automatically create a playlist for you. There doesn't seem to be this option in 7, only a box that says there isn't enough room!
    Nano 1st generation   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

For the messages in iTunes when your library is too big: That could just be a software change in iTunes related to the new way to update your iPod in iTunes 7.
For the lag: How long is it taking? The iPod might not respond instantly, but it shouldn't take longer that 1/2 second to 1 second to respond if the iPod isn't doing anything. If it's doing something (you just disconnected it from the computer, loading notes, sometimes music, etc) then there might be a short delay.
The iPod shouldn't be stalling to the point where it stops in between switching menus.
