[SOLVED]Gnome icon themes - folder icons

I think it belongs here.
I made some folder icons for  retrofukation icons theme and tried to apply them as documents, music etc. folder icons, but did not succeed. Then I thought the theme was written wrong, and tried to apply 100% working (in that u-distro) Humanity theme, but with the same effect.
Then I updated the system, but nothing happened.
Then I googled for a while, but found nothing worth reading - maybe because of bad search query...
Anyway, does anyone know how to make 'places' icons work?
//I run a standalone wm and use lxappearance. When I downloaded and tried gnome-control-center, it did not help as well.
P.S. The icons:

Yes, that works just fine, thank you! xdg-user-dirs was not installed, because I did not install the whole gnome. I installed it and updated the directories (xdg-user-dirs-update) and now the icons look just like I want.
But I have a couple of folders (like ~/Distros or ~/Source) for which I would like to set custom icons too.
So I have ~/.icons/retrofukation/scaled/places/folder-source.png and ~/Source directory. Any chance to set an icon for it?

  • [KDE] Icon theme in some GTK+ apps is stuck to Oxygen

I've been trying to figure out what my problem is for a few days now... For some reason, when I try to change the icon theme to anything besides Oxygen for GTK apps when I'm using the oxygen-gtk theme, it doesn't change. But if I switch to a theme such as Raleigh, it uses my icon theme.
The icon theme I am trying to set is KFaenza. I also tried Faenza-Cupertino, using Faenza as a fallback, but that didn't work either.
I saw this topic, which is almost my exact issue. This didn't help either.
I tried multiple tweaks to my .gtkrc-2.0, such as commenting out the theme name, the first "include" (that sets my theme to oxygen-gtk), and commenting out the fallback icon theme line. None of these work.
I also tried putting the icon themes in /usr/share/icons, which didn't help.
I am using the System Settings module to set my GTK+ theme. I have an up-to-date system (just reinstalled a couple of days ago).
Currently I am using an unmodified gtkrc created by System Settings.
Hopefully all this info helps, and thanks in advance for any answers!
UPDATE: I just installed gconf-editor to see if I could fix anything in there. It just turns out that gconf-editor is obeying my settings and this is a problem with Chromium and not GTK.
UPDATE #2: I also installed Firefox and it is also not obeying my settings.

Copy the icon theme folder to /usr/share/icons
(ex. if your icon theme folder's name is Oxygen-Refit, it should be at /usr/share/icons/Oxygen-Refit)
Then edit ~/.gtkrc-2.0-kde and add the line baghera suggested. It works here.
Note that you need to do this to .gtkrc-2.0 (yes, thats without -kde) too if you don't use gtk-qt-engine to change gtk themes.
Also note that every time you change the gtk theme (either via systemsettings or via 3rd party utility) this line is autoremoved from the corresponding file(s).
Finally, make sure you close the gtk app you want the change to be shown and reopen it. All newly opened gtk apps should show the change.

  • XFCE icon theme confusion

I have a weird problem with my icons and XFCE. Some time ago my gedit icon in the taskbar had gone missing. After a while, I decided to erase my XFCE config and create a new and the icon was properly shown again. But during the time I configurated XFCE, it was again as a missing icon in the xfce taskbar. In the application menu the icon is shown correctly.
Furthermore, Midori shows at the position of the forward button the icon of rhythmbox's next button, but not always, just sometimes, depending on it's mood [Update: No, not depending on it's mood but if it's a shadowed or active button].
I guess my icon theme is somehow corrupted, but removing and reinstalling did not work (using 'gnome'). I also updated my icon cache without any change. If I change to another icon theme, the problem also remains.
    Any suggestions?
[UPDATE] Yeah, I tried to remove my config again, but this time nothing was fixed by that.

  • Shortcut and Folder icons only display as PNG icon

I am having trouble doing something simple and I can't figure it out. If I want to change a web shortcut icon or folder icon whatever I change it to only displays as a PNG icon, not the icon I want.
I open get info on the folder or shortcut, copy the new icon over the picture in the top left and it changes to a PNG icon but never displays the actual icon! This hapens with any icon format (png, jpg) etc.. and happens on folders and shortcuts.
Why wont this simple task work? I've repaired permissionsetc.. no joy. At the moment I have a dozen web shortcuts on my desktop all with the same icon and all the folders in my dock have the same icon whenever I try to change them

Most likely a mucked up LaunchServices database. Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste this one-liner into the window that pops up, hit the return key, quit the Terminal app when the prompt symbol returns, and restart. That should do the trick.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome 3.10 Icons are broken

I upgraded earlier to Gnome 3.10. Although I've had a lot of problems.. I'm working on them one at a time.
Most of the default icons are not showing anymore. My Nautilus looks like this:
Some of the applications icons do still exist.
If I create a new user and log in, the icons are all fine. But I cannot figure out how to bring back icons on my own user account.
I tried running the command on http://askubuntu.com/questions/56313/ho … e-defaults, which set my favourites and wallpaper back to default. Icons still aren't fixed.
I tried running gtk-update-icon-cache on my icons folder. Tried running xdg-user-dirs-update. Tried sudo pacman -S $(pacman -Ssq gnome-icon-theme). Tried running /usr/bin/gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache and tried reinstalling librsvg. None of these have helped.
    Thanks.

Not solved for me I'm afraid. I'm running Openbox + Tint2 setup, with quite a few Gnome applications. I use the Oxygen icon theme.
Since the upgrade to the Gnome 3.10 packages, my GTK3 applications have missing icons which only reappear if I choose the GNOME icon theme using lxappearance, which modifies ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini. Here's my normal settings.ini:
    [Settings]
    gtk-theme-name=Clearlooks-Phenix
    gtk-icon-theme-name=oxygen
    gtk-font-name=Arimo 9
    gtk-cursor-theme-name=aero-drop
    gtk-cursor-theme-size=0
    gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH_HORIZ
    gtk-toolbar-icon-size=GTK_ICON_SIZE_MENU
    gtk-button-images=1
    gtk-menu-images=1
    gtk-enable-event-sounds=1
    gtk-enable-input-feedback-sounds=1
    gtk-xft-antialias=1
    gtk-xft-hinting=1
    gtk-xft-hintstyle=hintfull
    gtk-xft-rgba=rgb
When 'gtk-icon-theme-name=gnome' is used instead, the icons display in GTK3 applications.
Any ideas please how I can get the Oxygen theme to play nicely with Gnome 3.10 applications?

    Thanks for posts!
I have done all the steps, but real key was to reboot the system! Even pkill X didn't work. It's now solved.
To give users with the same issue a solution:
    - Set icon-theme with lxappearance
    - Be sure that gtk3.0/settings.ini has fallback and icon-theme the same value (not know if it really needed)
    - Reboot! pkill X didn't work for me.
    Thanks again.

  • [SOLVED]Incorrect thunar folder icons

Hello I've been using the Area Blue icon theme for a few days but after a reboot yesterday the folder icons are GNOME icons. All the other icons are unaffected. I've tried deleting and re-downloading the icons but the folder icons just won't work. Any ideas?
    Edit:
this is only happening in thunar all other programs and unaffected. PCmanFM works too

No I was saying that since I was setting up everything(themes, compositing, etc..) today I may have changed something that after the reboot caused the icons to "disappear".
Also it is only in thunar that the folder icons are missing.
I've tried searching around but I haven't seen anything so far, but I may have missed somthing
"Having the icon pack in /usr/share/icons (not "/usr/share/themes") makes it available system-wide, for other users as well."
Thank you that's what I meant.

  • Tango-Green icon theme screwed my home folder!

    http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show. … tent=38211
I switched to the tango-green icon theme.  Ever since, my home folder has been screwed up.  Half the folders are at the top, the other half at the bottom after a mile of scrolling.  Also, the little picture that's usually on the Desktop folder is chilling at a random place (not even on an icon, weird).  This fixes itself when I switch back to the standard theme.  I really like this icon set, though.  Is there a way to fix this?

  • [SOLVED] icon-theme.cache and post install

    Hi all,
after a problem with an app (in this case RawTherapee) that requires uptodate icon-theme.cache files under /usr/share/icons/THEME - I just want to ask for your opinion: Is this a feature that should be provided by the icon-theme package post install?
    For example, xfce4-icon-theme has
    post_install() {
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/Rodent
    in it's xfce4-icon-theme.install,
    while gnome-icon-theme and hicolor-icon-theme don't and require issueing gtk-update-icon-cache manually after installation/update.
So what do you think, does this call for a feature request?
Edit: Seems like I got the concept wrong and that a solution is not that simple / on the segfaulting programs side... see http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14237. Thx Jan for explaining.

Apparently gtk-update-icon-cache didn't accept that i had a .icon-theme.cache in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/. After removing it gtk-update-icon-cache apparently created a new file "icon-theme.cache" and doesn't complain anymore. The thing that is wierd about this is that on my other comp i have the .icon-theme.cache and it doesn't complain when upgrading.. Marking this solved anyway
