[SOLVED] GNOME login screen freezes after 3 seconds

Hello,
today I installed Arch-Linux the first time. I had some issues during the installation (following https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Anleitu … Einsteiger (its the german version, seems to differ a little from the english version)), but everything went good until I installed GNOME. Now the login screen freezes everytime after quite exactly 3 seconds, unless I press [strg]+[alt]+[f2] fast enough to switch in tty2. Then the screen will only freeze when I switch back to tty1. Once the screen is frozen, I can't switch to tty2 anymore.
I think the problem has something to do with my nvidia hybrid graphic system. During the installation I installed the packages bumblebee, bbswitch and primus, but uninstalled them because I thought they could be the problem. But although I uninstalled the packages, the "Stamina-Mode" status led is turned on after the system has started and the "Speed-Mode" status led not. I think that's a little bit strange, because I can't imagine which process is controlling these leds.
So I ran just
pacman -S xorg-drivers
and I had to create the xinitrc-file (because I could not find this file in /etc/skel). Now the default GUI appeared after I ran
startx
(I saw some windows and a clock). After that I installed gnome, changed the xinitrc-file in my userhome and got the freeze after a reboot.
I don't know if it has anything to do with my problem, but I get the following error-messages everytime I boot:
[drm:ibx_irq_handler] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun
[drm:intel_dp_start_link_train] *ERROR* too many full retries, give up
[drm:ilk_display_irq_handler] *ERROR* Pipe A FIFO underrun
interl ips 0000:00:1f.6: thermal reporting for required devices not enabled, aborting

P.S.: Because I'm a total beginner at linux I probably missed the most important informations, but I can give you more if you tell me how

Ok, I could solve the problem myself by installing the latest nvidia driver. Now I guess the intel grahic card is not used anymore, but I don't really know...

  • Login Screen freezes after Lion 10.7.2 upgrade - needs 3 hard reboots

Just upgraded my 21.5" late 2009 iMac to OS X Lion 10.7.2.
    0. Power up from cold start: login screen appears, and mouse works, but clicking on users does not bring up the password box.  No option except for hard reboot.
    1. Hold down power button until it shuts down.  Power up, still no respponse (see 0.).
    2. Hold down power button until it shuts down.  Power up, still no respponse (see 0.).
    3. Hold down power button until it shuts down.  Power up, responds normally, can login (or start computing if login screen is bypassed).
I saw messages (mostly for MacBook Pros) dating back to July/August 2011 with similar problems.  But none for 10.7.2, and none where it consistently takes 3 hard reboots to get a response.  I tried all of the suggestions that applied: SMC reset, repair disk permissions, change password, bypass login screen. If I use automatic login, it boots up into my desktop and all the services seem to start.  The mouse works, but nothing responds when I click on it (see 0.).
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    david

Thanks lynque.  It turns out I did need a keychain repair, but that didn't fix the problem.  I probably should have done this earlier, but I ended up unplugging all peripherals (2 firewire + 3 USB) then powered up without issue.
So I shut down, plugged in one at a time, and ran into the problem again after plugging in an external hard drive (WD My Book Essential).  I repaired with disk utility, but the problem remained.
I then rebuilt the partitions with Disk Warrior, and now everything seems to work....

  • Login screen freezes after the Lion 10.7.1 update

After updating to 10.7.1 (the first Lion update) & restarting the system, it's not logging me in. As I give my password and press return it stays on the same login screen. I could move the mouse but there is no rotating wheel, just the same login screen. I tried starting Mac in safe mode but same thing.

Force a restart and at the chime hold down the SHIFT key. You will see a gray progress bar appear. When the login screen appears, reboot again WITHOUT holding down the SHIFT key. Then try logging in again.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Passport screen freezes after a long call

    Hello,
I've got my PassPort since fall october.
Although I am quite happy with it, I have noticed that after a long call, say 15min or more, the screen becomes slowly responsive. It doesn't fully freeze, though it is very slow to bring back the unlock screen. After unlocking the screen, the device behave nearly as expected although I have also noticed that the keyboard doesn't light. And if it locks again, it stays slowly responsive until I unlock the screen. To bring back the normal behavior there is nothing to do but restarting the device.
    OS is : 10.3.0.1418
    Radio is : 10.3.0.1419
Device is full encrypted as well as the SD card.
I've got very few third party apps, say Whatsapp, BBM meeting, radio.fr, beta zone, device switch.
I've removed everything on the device and did a clean, full install with link but I still experienced the same issue.
    Any idea ?
    Regards,
    LB

    Ira,
Thanks for replying. No, I did no test without any third party apps. I'd prefer not being forced to uninstall WhatsApp because I'm using it a lot ... I was using it in the past with BB OS 7 and had no issue so far. However I saw a lot of threads dealing with screen freezing after calling but none of them mentionning issue with WhatsApp. Do you have any link about this?
    Regards,

I have iPad air, screen freezes after FaceTime call and cannot get back to home screen, have to power down and turn back on to get back to home screen.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hi RWD2,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
To resolve your issue with Facetime freezing when you end a call, I would try the first three steps in the article below.
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3281
    Resolution
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If you are using Wi-Fi, it may be helpful to try these troubleshooting steps as well:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398?viewlocale=en_US
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings including previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

I hope this information helps ....
    Have a great day!

  • [Solved] Screen freezes few seconds after logging in.

    Hey there.
I'm looking for some guidance if possible.
I installed Arch in an external hard drive to test out the compatibility with my laptop (a LG P1-J331P > http://pastie.org/8548089 ) with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 video card. All following the beginner's guide [https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide] and relevant wiki for the external/usb device installation [https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Usb_installation].
Running arch with "nomodeset" on kernel parameter, it runs normally, except that the screen resolution was fixed at [email protected], though it should be maxed at 1280x800@60.
    When "nomodeset" is set:
    $dmesg | grep radeon
[ 10.859500] [drm] VGACON disable radeon kernel modesetting.
[ 10.859507] [drm:radeon_init] *ERROR* No UMS support in radeon module!
Without using "nomodeset", the system detects correctly the screen resolution but it freezes few seconds later after logging. Can't Ctrl+Alt+F1.
    Tried:
    - added "radeon" to MODULES array in the mkinitcpio file. And run the subsequent "mkinitcpio -p linux";
    - created a "/etc/rc.d/rc.local" file with contents:
    modprobe -r radeon
    modprobe -r drm
    modprobe radeon modeset=1
    - tested "radeon.pcie_gen2=0", "pci=nomsi", "noapic" and "acpi=off" to the kernel parameter.
    - created a "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf" file with contents: http://pastie.org/private/bhcbfvs3zvplvspwamxa2q
Video card drivers installed: mesa, xf86-video-vesa and xf86-video-ati.
    lsmod > http://pastie.org/private/orfrp0qg8kijqwuvrrxqag
    uname -r > http://pastie.org/private/u89igykam0slvnv2ffhhpq
    lspci | grep VGA >
    dmesg | grep radeon >
    journalctl --since=today >
    cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log > http://pastie.org/private/thgrsplegancpggsfsbjlw
    top -b > http://codepad.org/iojWRb9U
Any advice for this newbie would be appreciated.

    - Tried creating a "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf" file with contents:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "ATI Mobility Radeon X1400"
    Driver "radeon"
Option "SWcursor" "off" #software cursor might be necessary on some rare occasions, hence set off by default
Option "EnablePageFlip" "on" #supported on all R/RV/RS4xx and older hardware, and set on by default
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" #valid options are XAA, EXA and Glamor. EXA is the default
Option "RenderAccel" "on" #enabled by default on all radeon hardware
Option "ColorTiling" "on" #enabled by default on RV300 and later radeon cards
Option "EXAVSync" "off" #default is off, otherwise on. Only works if EXA activated
Option "EXAPixmaps" "on" #when on icreases 2D performance, but may also cause artifacts on some old cards. Only works if EXA activated
Option "AccelDFS" "on" #default is off, read the radeon manpage for more information
    EndSection
        And the subsequent Xorg.0.log > http://pastie.org/private/goyhnu9bzxhzybl4sisaa
With this file and using "nomodeset", the boot would be stuck at :
[ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface.
But without "nomodeset" parameter, it would successfully launch the graphical login but still freezes a few seconds after logging in.
    xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
    screen #0:
    dimensions: 1280x800 pixels (338x211 millimeters)
    resolution: 96x96 dots per inch

  • After upgrading to yosemit login screen freeze upon waking up

After upgrade to Yosemite, my MacBook Air (1.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB)  sometimes freeze upon waking up, at login screen. With a white Apple logo on the top left corner of the screen, my login user name in the center, Cancel button at the bottom of the screen, and the usual login password text box is not available. I don't have control of the mouse or keyboard. This usually happens after extended sleep.  The only way out of this situation is to hold down the power button to restart.
The only application I'm running at the time of sleep (closing the lid of my macbook air) is Parallel 9, with Windows 7 and Microsoft Outlook running inside the virtual machine.  After rebooting the system, and relaunching Parallel, Windows 7 reports that it was shutdown unexpectedly.
Has any one run into this? Will upgrading Parallel 10 fix this problem?

I haven't found or seen a permanent solution. A temporary solution from another user is to change the screen resolution to the next lower. It solves the problem for now, at least for him. One other disbled their screen saver and increased the time period before sleep mode kicks in. Otherwise, the obvious is to disabled the sleep mode entirely for the time being. These are from people with different hardware. These may or may not help. If I run across a real fix I'll let you know. Appreciate, if you can do the same.

  • Screen freezes after login on Lion OS X (intermittent)

Ever since upgrading my MacBook Pro (purchased Apr-10) from Leopard to Lion I'm experiencing an intermittent problem where the screen freezes once a user has logged in. The problem only occurs when the machine is started from off and doesn't occur when starting from sleep or when switching users.
This problem affects all users set up on this machine and results in a cursor that can still be moved but can't select anything and a keyboard that is unresponsive. Most times the cursor shows as the coloured wheel. I have left the machine in this state for over 30 minutes to see if it would recover but it doesn't and I have no option other than to perform a hard reset by holding down the power button. Sometimes it can take a couple of hard resets before the machine recovers.
The configuration of my machine is fairly straight forward with an Apple Time Capsule providing backup and WiFi and minimal software installed.
I have found that disabling all 'Open At Login' apps reduces the likelihood of the problem but doesn't cure it.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and can provide a solution as I want to avoid having to revert to Leopard if possible.

Accelerated Video Drivers for the 5770 and 5870 first appeared in 10.6.5, so when running 10.6, be sure to update to at least that version before drawing conclusions.
Otherwise, I think your conclusions that this is a graphics card problem are likely correct. Over a very large sample, these cards have been much more reliable than many previous cards. But you do not have a very large sample, you have one card.
The Mac Pro (65lb tower) uses Error Correcting Code memory, so this is NOT a RAM memory problem or you would be getting kernel panics with machine check, uncorrected error.
Apple hardware test is a tool that only seems to detect the grossest of errors. It is famous for false negatives.

  • Screen freeze after OS start

    Hello,
I have a Mac Book Pro. The screen freeze right after starting the OS.
I can not move my mouse (usb or pad), Typing has no effect.
-> I switch OFF/ON many times: do not work
->I tried safe mode, but nothing work
->I tried Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down. But I can not type anything.
The clock is still working, and the airport still find if internet is ON.
It seems that everything work except the mouse and keyboard....
BUT during the re--boot, if I press Shift and power -on. the computer start in Safe mode....but then nothing....
Only the POWER button is working.
    Please help.....

    I still need help.
I went to the apple store, plugged my computer into their monitor, keyboard and mouse. It worked fine. For over an hour I clicked on everything and did just about everything I can think of that I usually do. I changed settings in preferences, turned off the screen saver and turned it back on, turned off putting the computer to sleep and back on, restarted multiple times and the keyboard and mouse worked fine. So, we determined that I must need a new keyboard and mouse.
I set up my computer this morning and it worked fine. But when I came back and tried to wake it up from the screensaver I got no reaction. pushed the power button lightly a couple of times to force the ask for password screen to come up, when I tried to type my password in nothing happened. So then I forced the computer to shut down by holding the power button down for three seconds (the one on the monitor). Then started up, mouse wouldn't work. So, I thought it must be the usb port on the monitor that is bad. I shut down. plugged the keyboard into the back of my mac instead of the monitor.
All seemed great. Computer response even seemed faster. I thought I had solved my problem. I was using the computer for probably less than 30 minutes and then while I was using it the mouse froze. Computer would accept no input from the keyboard either, like clicking F11 for expose reaction.
I'm back to square one. What else should I try?????
    Any ideas out there???
    Thanks in advance.

  • Frozen login screen even after restore and reinstall

When I am starting my MacBook Pro 15" (Mid 2010) I often have a frozen login screen (where I enter my account password) and the only thing I can do is press for seconds the power button. I have already tried to reinstall MacOS X Lion and even a restore from my time machine back up but the problem still appears. Is there anyway to resolve this problem? And is it possible to erase everything and reinstall Lion ?

Yes a clean install will erase everything in your hard drive.  Be aware you should have a clone backup (which I prefer) or a time machine backup so that the migration assistant can copy your user and all preferences.
if you mac already has lion installed you could
Restart your computer while holding the option key. After the startup chime you will see your available boot volumes. Choose Recovery HD. (You might be able to start up with command-r to boot directly into the Recovery HD emergency partition, but I have found that only the most recent Macs will respond to this key combination.) Once boot is complete, look under the menu bar's Tools for Disk Utility. Start up Disk Utility, choose your main hard drive partition, and reformat to your heart's content.
You won't be able to perform certain partitioning tasks when booted this way, but you can do nearly everything that you could do if you were booted from an external device or optical disc.
    or another option is:
Make a bootable DVD or USB stick .  I will guide you through the steps:
If you don't have a copy of the install mac osx lion.app redownload again from the app store
Before doing this you should make a clone of your hard drive or have a time machine backup at hand, that is a very important step.
    1. right click or control click on the lion install file and select show package contents.
    2. Navigate to Contents>Shared Support
    3. Inside there is an dmg image called InstallESD.dmg
    4. Burn image to a blank DVD or usb stick with program of your choice (USB stick works faster while booting).
    5. Restart holding option key
    6. Select DVd or usb stick you just made.
    I hope this helps.
