[solved] gnome-panel restarts with alt+f2???

Hello, few days ago I made an upgrade (pacman -Syyu) and I noticed today that when I make alt+f2 my gnome-panel restarts and no Run windows opens... well the first time I press alt+f2 it opens but only for a microsecond and it closes and gnome-panel restarts...
Any ideas how can fix this?

I dug up an old applet I had written for Cinnamon (based on another applet by Tjaart van der Walt), and upgraded it to work with Gnome 3.12
For some reason, I am not able to submit it to the AUR.
^^Mods: please help if possible - I keep getting a "Invalid name: only lowercase letters are allowed". error when I am trying to submit the tarball linked below.
download link to the tarball, in case anyone wants to use it: https://app.box.com/s/d9wsu6u8jkcknl0r4z6x

  • [solved] Gnome 2.30 with Compiz - xcursor theme problem

    Hello all.
After the recent upgrade to gnome 2.30 I've notice that the cursor under compiz/emerald stays in the "default" theme, no matter what you set on configs...
All my computers, after the upgrade, show the "default" theme cursor, except when passing the cursor over GTK apps like firefox or openoffice (when it shows the selected cursor theme) or over window close/max/min buttons.
If you switch from compiz to metacity, the theming works normally.
I've tested this with all themes I have installed, in many computers.
Any ideas how to solve this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

If I choose default pointer in Appearance Preferances, still the X-default-Theme is used.

Why does the DMZ-White Theme not appear in the Pointer Tab in Appearance Prefs?

  • [Solved] Gnome crashes/restarts

    Hi,
I had these weird crashes with kdm and found a temporary solution which was switching off Direct Rendering. It stopped the crashes by a huge amount but they still kept happening randomly.
    What happened would be
Blank screen > Nvidia Screen> Kde login
So annoyed with it I decided to get gnome and delete kdm. The problem with gnome right now is the same thing which happened with kde except only on battery mode. It hasnt happened so far in 12+ hours when its connected to AC power.
I'm beginning to think its a nvidia issue rather than a issue with BOTH the environments. Any fix to this?
    Last edited by death__machine (2011-07-09 23:17:59)

I got nouveau, followed the arch-wiki about it. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nouveau
It asked me to blacklist the nvidia driver incase I had it installed, which I did but it didnt work, so I uninstalled the nvidia driver. Then I rebooted and gnome started on fallback mode, googled it and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=926307 this thread showed up where someone said to install nouveau-dri. Did that and seems to be working . I really hope this doesnt crash on me and I have a feeling it wont .

  • [solved] Gnome / Nautilus: Open With CLI programm

    Hello,
How can I add CLI programs such as sxiv Image Viewer to the Open With context menu entry in Nautilus?

    Thanks

I think the list of "Open With" applications is created by reading the ".desktop" files that are on your computer. You can read about them here. The sysem files are in "/usr/share/applications" and your personal ones are in "~/.local/share/applications". Just create a .desktop file for sxiv that uses a command similar to the one cellisten posted.
GNOME probably also has a way to create .desktop files with a GUI (I think it used to be called "alacarte").
cellisten wrote:What I have done is to create a script and put that in /usr/bin.
Did you copy your OWN file into a directory that's controlled by pacman?

Number of Desktops should always be one. Compiz is unique from other window managers in that it uses (GL) viewports instead of desktops. • Gnome panel issue in solaris 10 - help

    Hello ,
I have here solaris 10 (137111-01) on sunblade 1500 machine ( total 50 machines). There is a strange problem appearing since this week, when a user logs into JDE(gnome DE) then users gets logged in but gnome-panel does not show anything. If PID for gnome-panel is killed, gnome-panel restarts but again it is blank ( grayed out)
The above issue new and only for nis+ users whose home directories get auto mounted from solaris nfs servers. Let me say here that it worked fine until now for these nis+ users but now. They are forced to use common desktop env which they don't like.
Local user such as root or any other local use gets the gnome-panel with start menu and everything works fine for it.
I have tried restarting nis+ services as well as nfs.server service and rebooting the nis+ clients which have the issue but still hasn't helped it.
Somehow I managed to set panel preference to Normal (from Restart) and then killed the Panel PID. Started with truss,
    Here is the truss o/p.
http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=thvekw7VAnother thing observed is when the nis+ user logs into these workstations, they can't do ssh to any machine , it hangs and CTRL C also doesn't kill it. They have to close the terminal itself to kill it.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.6: Battery/power icon missing from panel

I've recently ressurected an old Arch laptop that had been lying dormant for a year or a half. Everything's been brought up to speed (pacman -Syu plus a lot of systemd study) satisfactorily except I've noticed that the battery/power icon on the panel is missing. Due to the long time since the install, I have no idea if this is due to an error or some old brilliant idea setting from my side a year or more ago :-(
    What I've tried:
    * Disabling all extensions (a lot of posts about the system monitor extension causing this -- I've never used it). Extension turn off registers but still no battery.
    * Checking htop and gnome power  statistics to see if the system knows about my battery. Both report in detail about the battery.
    * Checking /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/panel.js to see if the power applet had been excluded somehow. Nope, it's listed.
    * Checking dconf to see if I could find some setting there. Ubuntu user posts led me to org.gnome.power-manager but unlike those users I found no setting relevant ("icon-policy")
    * Checking gnome settings and tweak settings. Found nothing that seemed relevant.
A lot of posts about this pops up around gnome 3.2 which apparently had a bug with this problem. I'm not sure what version gnome-shell was before the update but currently it is 3.6.3 and the laptop has been rebooted and had gnome-shell restarted any number of times since then.
    Any suggestions?

    Good point, WonderWoofy.
I created a guest account and found the icon on the panel when I logged in as guest. A bit of guessing located the problem to my dconf database and using gsettings to locate any power/battery-related settings pointed me to
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power
which had been deactivated. Clicking 'Active' and restarting gnome-shell solved my problem.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3.8 Classic mode - can't edit panels

    Hi!
I've just switched from MATE to GNOME (3.8.4).
    I use gnome-classic ("gnome-session --session gnome-classic" opened from whether gdm or slim/xinitrc).
How do I edit panels and applets on them?
I know that Alt+Right click on the panel doesn't always work and everybody recommends Super+Alt+Right click on a panel but it doesn't work for me either.
I also tried a lot of other shortcut combinations (Ctrl+Super+Alt+Right Click, Shift+Super+Alt+Right Click, etc.), I still can't get the menu to show.
I tried clicking both on top and bottom panels.
    How do I debug this?
I tried removing all user configs (.config/dconf, .config/gconf, .config/gtk*, etc.), creating a new user, reinstalling GNOME, nothing helped.
I also tried default gnome-session (without any flashbacks/fallbacks/classic parameters). It doesn't work there either.
    Thanks in advance.

  • [Solved] nm-applet not appearing in gnome panel

    Hi all.
I recently replaced my wired network card with a wireless one.
I then followed the instructions at the following pages to get the correct software installed:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … orkManager
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NetworkManager
My only problem now is that nm-applet does not appear in the gnome panel.
Both nm-applet and networkmanager are running though, but the network is not up.
If I then kill nm-applet and run it from the command line, it the creates the icon in gnome-panel and automatically connects to my wireless network.
I've looked through all the related posts but I can't find anything that helps.
I've tried to make my DAEMONS section of rc.conf as simple as possible:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng netfs crond dbus networkmanager alsa)
    but that didn't help either.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
As a side note I have a another machine with exactly the same wireless card with a fresh install and it works perfectly with regards to nm-applet.
Perhaps it's a config setting that is causing the problem?

when i start gnome-panel, the 'applications' drop down is empty, and 'system' no longer contains the 'administration' and 'preferences' items.

i wanted to see if alacarte still showed things, so i ran alacarte from a terminal (which normally works)...

naturally, starting alacarte by right clicking on gnome-menu -> edit menus also does nothing.
i looked at /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py with cat, and there is nothing super-obviously wrong with the script.
    also:
    [chris: ~]$ ls /usr/share/applications
    abiword.desktop
    alacarte.desktop
    aldm-gui.desktop
    assistant.desktop
    at-properties.desktop
    avahi-discover.desktop
    banshee-1-audiocd.desktop
    banshee-1.desktop
    banshee-1-media-player.desktop
    baobab.desktop
    *and so on*
    so those didn't vanish.
    any ideas?

so i saw this error message....
** (gnome-panel:4408): WARNING **: Error loading menu layout from "/home/chris/.config/menus/settings.menu": Error on line 1 char 1: Document was empty or contained only whitespace
the file was empty. and what do we do with broken config files in ~? why, we hide them, of course!
    [chris: ~/.config/menus]$ mv settings.menu settings.menubackup
now gnome-panel works, but alacarte (menu editor) and lxpanel's menu is still busted.
now that i am getting somewhere, im gonna keep posting as i trace this down so others that may come across this same issue can benefit.
edit: renamed ~/.config/menus/lxde-applications.menu to .menubackup and restarted lxpanel, it works now.
    edit2:
    alacarte is giving me this...
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/chris/.config/menus/applications.menu'
and sure enough, pcmanfm told me that the file belonged to root.
sudo pcmanfm, navigated to that file, right click -> properties -> permissions -> changed owner to chris and group to users.
    alacarte works now, too.
i think im going to go through and recursively make everything in each ~ folder belong to the username it should just in case permissions got jumbled somewhere/anywhere else.
just so i know: did this happen to anyone else that updated within the last 24 hours or so?
(so i can learn if it was something *I* did, or if it was something that came with the *update*)

  • Gnome-panel and/or more broken? solved

    Hi there,
Just to the lead up, I was mounting my school's server's smb drives. I was also experimenting all day getting SSH and SAMBA working to communicate with my old desktop I set up in my room to act as a server. So I was unmounting these network drives (school and server), when all the gnome-panel stuff frozen. AWN was fully functional, as were all the open windows and the desktop. But nothing on the panel worked, menu, windowlist, cpufreq, clock, etc, it was all frozen. I ctrl+alt+backapaced and logged in, great, now theres no panel at all, reboot with the same problem. The panel appeared after around 7 minutes of downtime. During this downtime of the panel, I also could not use alt+F2 run, which did pop up when the panel popped up. Also after the panel popped up, gedit takes way longer than normal to start up.
Any ideas as to what is going on here?
EDIT: Rebooted several times with the same problem of insanely slow start up of the panel, reinstalled all gnome+gnome-extra packages and everything seems to be back to normal for now.

You can turn things off mostly in the applications themself. I for example have the following:
    - Bluetooth Icon (turn on / off in Bluetooth Preferences)
    - Display Icon (turn on / off in Display)
    - Bettery Icon (turn on / off in Power Management)
    - NetworkManager (shows icon by default, I don't know of another way to run this).
    Volume Applet (right-click to remove)
In Preferences - Startup Applications you can specify which programs to run, but I don't think this affects the tray icons.
