[solved] gnome-shell bad looking after update

Hi,
After update (about two weeks ago) my gnome looks bad. You can see this in screenshots. Very large icons and strange rectangles in gnome shell menu on started applications.
Can you help?

Hi
Desktop icons: open Files (nautilus) and change default zoom level for icons from standard to small (preferences - views).
Rectangles:  this is how running applications are displayed in the default theme. If those rectangles bother you too much, the easiest way is to change theme. For example, ceti-2 and vertex are already ported to 3.16.
It works. Thanks for help.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.2 inopertive after update

After entering startx Gnome starts up but all I see is my desktop background. And after a while the mouse pointer appears and is x shaped instead of the normal arrow. (note I do not have GDM)

Okay, I found a solution. I booted, went into one of the alternate displays, logged in, and ran the following command to delete any of my stored preferences that might have been messing with the new install:
    rm -r .gconf .gconfd .gnome2 .gnome2_private
I then rebooted, and everything works fine!
    I hope this helps!
    Namaste.

  • [Solved] Gnome 3 Shell - Icons Missing After Update

After my last update session, some icons went missing in Gnome. Even more unsettling, only some are missing. From what I can tell, my application icons haven't gone anywhere, but things such as minimize, restore, close, etc. are 404. Here's a photo to explain: https://vps.nullh.net/uploads/gnome-icon-issue.png I also noticed nvidia is included in the last update. I searched the forums, but all of the other problems seemed to be different problems (e.g. application icons were all bunched up/missing, desktop icons "missing", etc.) I feel like I should probably have more icons in the folders, too, but I haven't looked in there before the problem to be sure. Also, Alt+F2 "r" doesn't make a difference, the shell reloads but the icons are still AWOL. If anyone has any ideas, I am all ears.

I ran gnome-shell --replace to try to get some logs out of it. Apparently, it doesn't know how vector files work any more.

  • [Solved] Gnome-shell text turned to rectangles after botched upgrade

    Hi all,
I've run into a problem that I just can't solve, so I was wondering if somebody with a lot of expertise could help out. My system has a couple of stability issues; it freezes up every few days, and I have to make a hard reboot (I think it's related to the video card, but I haven't had the funds to go get a better one yet). The last time it froze was during a pacman upgrade, and I had to reboot. At the new boot, after logging in, all of the gnome-shell letters turned to rectangles (see screenshot), and I had a bunch of other errors. I ran another upgrade Sync with pacman and rebooted; that took care of the errors, but the font problems still remained. The interesting thing is that the gdm window has no problems, I can see the icons on the top right just fine, and the date renders perfectly. It's only when I log in when the blocks occur, and they only occur on gnome-shell panel text (and on everything under Activities).
I have a 32-bit system that's fully migrated to systemd with open source radeon drivers. Here's some output of journalctl for the current boot, with stuff unrelated to the gnome-shell display removed (e.g. NetworkManager, UFW, etc). However, I didn't find any new errors compared to logs from before the upgrade.

I tried using gnome-tweak tool to fiddle around with the fonts, but that didn't help, none of the fonts would render correctly. Cantarell, which I'm assuming is the gnome-shell font, is still in /etc/fonts/conf.avail, so I don't think that the font file itself went missing. I made the fontconfig update a while ago, and that didn't cause any problems.
I also heard that there were problems with xorg-server, so I downgraded xorg-server, pixman, and cairo to their previous versions, but that didn't help either. EDIT: I've also done a pacman -Syyf gnome-shell to try and reinstall gnome-shell. That also didn't work.
I've run out of things to try. If someone else was more familiar with the workings of gnome-shell fonts, or had a better idea of how to debug, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
UPDATE: I found that /etc/fonts/conf.avail/31-cantarell.conf existed, but was empty. After doing a pacman -Syyf cantarell-fonts, they went right back to normal!

    Problem disappeared.
I'm not sure, but i think installing xf86-video-modesetting helped to fix this issue.
I had an error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log like this:
(EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)

Hi all, I have an Acer netbook with Arch Linux i686. I installed GNOME-Shell 3.4, but there is no volume control applet. When playing music, i can't control the volume. Can you help me?

  • [Solved] gdm-x-session segfault after update to gdm-3.16.0.1-1

    After
updating to gdm-3.16.0.1-1, when starting a GNOME session with i3 as
window manager (using i3-gnome from the AUR) gdm-x-session crashes with
    error:
    $ dmesg
    [ 75.134600] gdm-x-session[642]: segfault at 38 ip 0000000000405ae9 sp
    00007ffc1aff1430 error 4 in gdm-x-session[400000+11000]
I am able to start all other sessions: GNOME shell, GNOME on Wayland,
    only i3.
    My system is up-to-date.
Could some one instruct me on how to further debug this error?
EDIT: It was easier to avoid i3-gnome completely and start gnome-setting-daemon from ~.i3/conf. I am still struggling with the keyring, but other than that everything else is working as intended.

Thanks for the hint, inxsible, downgrading to JRE 1.6 solved it.
For the sake of others who might run into the same problem: I downloaded jre-6u26-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz from the Arch Rollback Machine, installed it (
    pacman -U jre-6u26-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    ) and added
    jre
    to the
    IgnorePkg
    line in
    /etc/pacman.conf
so it won't get replaced in the next update.
After doing that, Eclipse suffered PermGen Out-of-memory-errors. Adding
    -XX:MaxPermSize=128M
    to
    /usr/share/eclipse/eclipse.ini
fixed that and now m2e installs fine.

  • Gnome won't start after update

Hey, so after I've updated gnome to 3.14 it refuses to start. The moment I get past the login screen (that works - I use lightdm), gnome will just tell me that "something has gone wrong" and it won't launch the session. For the past two hours or so I've been trying to identify the issue with no good results. What I think might be relevant is that I use the catalyst driver and also this part of journalctl -e /usr/bin/gnome-shell:

Same problem here, and I think that it's all Catalyst fault.
Many people are reporting GNOME 3.14 / Catalyst compatibility issue in AMD Bar & Grill thread (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57084&p=272) and I totally agree with Vi0l0 (unofficial Catalyst packages maintainer):
Vi0l0 wrote:As for the GNOME 3.14 - wish I have more time to look at this closer, I catched problems with GNOME latelly (but before 3.14) - it started to crash before start - I spent not much time on it, but didn't find solution. Fixing it is not that important for me right now, since im planning to install arch on btrfs 2xSSD smile. Its just the time... Wish I had some kind of clone of myself with shared awareness tongue.
But anyhow I think that GNOME 3.14 support could be real problem atm (at least with unmodified gnome packages), afaik 3.14 is really close to wayland and catalyst doesn't even have egl.
EDIT: if confirmed seems to be a display manager issue:
Vi0L0 wrote:BTW I installed new arch on new drives, and all seems to work fine, GDM didn't start so I used KDM. All problems are gone and GNOME 3.14 works pretty nice.

  • [SOLVED] xmodmap hangs and crashes after update

UPDATE: See pabloc's post for a solution. keyboard plugin of gnome-settings-daemon was overriding Xmodmap bindings.
After a pacman -Syu today, ~/.Xmodmap is no longer being loaded on login. Running `xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap` in a terminal window causes the entire DE (Cinnamon) to freeze, and it fixes itself after a minute or so (terminal window closes).
    Here is my ~/.xinitrc
    #!/bin/sh
    if [ -f $HOME/.Xmodmap ]; then
        /usr/bin/xmodmap $HOME/.Xmodmap
    fi
    exec gnome-session-cinnamon
I haven't modified ~/.Xmodmap recently, and it was working fine prior to the update. The only modifications are swapping of the PgUp/PgDn keys with Home/End because ThinkPads have them in a weird spot.
Here are my pacman.log entries from today:

I've done a bit more playing around with this. It seems running xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap does work, it's just very slow and CPU-hungry. Reducing my .Xmodmap file to include only the overrides (4 of them) allows it to complete in about a second.
However, it's still not being loaded on login, despite being in .xinitrc. In order to get my keybinds to work in a program, I need to open a terminal, run xmodmap manually, then execute whatever program I want them to work in.
I tried downgrading xf86-input-evdev but my keyboard no longer worked on boot, once the display manager appeared (and I couldn't switch TTYs with Ctrl+Shift+F*).

  • Gnome-shell extremely laggy after first login with xf86-video-ati

    Hello!
I've recently switched from Catalyst to the open-source ati driver. However, after the switch gdm is extremely laggy after being started up on boot (using gdm.service) and after login gnome-shell is laggy as well. If I kill gdm or logout, the new gdm instance is speedy as it should be and after logging in gnome-shell runs fine.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
    Thanks in advance!
UPDATE: for some reason gnome-shell started by the 'laggy-started-on-boot' gdm instance takes up constantly more than 60% CPU.

seems that nobody got some experience in Gnome 3 yet...
i guess X is working well, it's just Gnome what causes the problem.
Had some issues as well with the screen resolution and solved it by playing arround with xranr.
Is the gnome shell running? (Try [alt]+[F2], is there a black dialog for entering commands?)

  • Gnome shell 3.4.1 update / crash on login

    Hi,
I did a full update to Gnome 3.4.1.
Afterwards networkmanager had troubles with wifi, so I downgraded it to 0.9.2 as suggested by others here.
Gnome worked so far so good.
Then the networkmanager update arrived the next day and since that update the Gdm/gnome-shell crashes each and every time I try to login and drops back to login-screen. Networkmanager wifi works though ... great ;-)
Errors are exactly like described here in post #1 and #2: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=140154
(.xsession-errors and Gdm logfiles). But other than described in that thread, reinstalling gcr makes no change.
In fact reinstalling gnome alltogether makes no difference.
I deleted the installed gnome extensions as described in the wiki, before the last try to reinstall gnome. No luck.
It is a netbook with nvidia driver blob and purely core/extra/community so far.
Any ideas where else to look?
Also hints how to wipe gnome for a clean re-install would help (I tried pacman -Rn, but it keeps the gdm login picture for example).
    Thanks.
edit: Meanwhile I also tried to downgrade nvidia to 295.33, as suggested in this bug report. It did not help either.

I have had no other ideas as to how to fix it and obviously noone else who read this had a sparking idea/question.
Since a couple of further trials to reinstall Gnome were unsuccessful (and I am not willing to try another DM currently), I concluded that
    (a) all this is a bit too bleeding that edge for the old hardware and
    (b) apparently there is a need to wipe the machine to use Gnome again.
    (a) + (b) summed up to (c) for me: The netbook rolls in the slower package waves of "Wheezy" now.
    Thread can be closed.
    Peace.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Shell 3.4.1: Unable to prevent dynamic workspaces

I am trying to turn off dynamic workspaces and set a permanent number (6) as is supposedly possible since 3.4.
Using dconf, I turn the following setting to 'false':
    /org/gnome/shell/overrides/dynamic-workspaces
and enter '6' in to the following setting:
    /org/gnome/desktop/wm/preferences/num-workspaces
The '6' is then immediately changed back to however many workspaces the 'dynamic' setting has created at the moment.
Bizarrely, 'overriding' effect does not occur if I change the number when 'dynamic-workspaces' is set to true. Whenever it is set to false, Gnome changes the 'num-workspaces' setting to reflect current realities.
Regardless of settings, the way it works is still 'dynamic' [grumble]worst.use.of.that.word.ever....[/grumble]
Is this a bug? Or am I just not getting it right?
(As a side note,  the frippery static extension thing is currently uninstallable)
EDIT: If I try to set the number of workspaces far above what the current number is, I can see the number going down one-by-one. This would seem to indicate that the window manager is killing them off one after the other, as they aren't occupied. In other words, it's not that the new value is rejected out of hand. It's just that the WM still works dynamically.

  • Skype out on Mac bad quality after update to Version 7.9 (746)

Hey, I've been using skype out on a subscription calling from US to US or Canada, for over 2 years now. After the latest update (on 7/1 I believe) skype out on my computer became unusable... everyone complains that they can't hear me properly. But when I call the same person with my cell phone(on the same WIFI) they hear me perfectly... same headphones too. Anyone else dealing with this? I'm thinking of cancelling my skype subscription and getting an unlimited Canada/USA cell phone package! regards,

Wow, lots of replys so fast, sorry i took so long to get back to you all.
    Well thanks for the welcome.
When I say "grayed out" i mean that the botton is there but faded.. get me? Its like an option that is no longer available. e.g. while going thru normal options like FILE or EDIT and the like the options that are not available are "grayed out" or faded. And yes I am using Software Update from the blue Apple menu.
I am not well versed with the Mac, it's my girlfriend's Mac, I know a bit about it but I try not to mess with it too much.
I didnt know that I was able to update any other way (System Preferences > Software Update > Update Software) I will try this and see what I can find. But I would guess that all those settings are at DEFAULT.Is there an option to make it look for updates automatically on a set date/time or everyday/week/month? I was only trying to update recently cuz I heard that some Mac viruses were loose and I want to update her Mac. I hope to get this fixed soon.

Look for some logs on /var/log, maybe file /var/log/errors have something?
Keyboard and mouse stops, but what about rest of system? Have you seen something works on that time? Maybe flash animation or something? Maybe you was watching movie or listening to music at this time?
    I just opened the wireless connection, less than two seconds the gnome-shell died, the keyboard and mouse stoped either;
but i can see that key CapsLk's LED turns  on or off in loops.
