[Solved] Gnome shutdown and logout menu font problem

Hi All,
When I click shutdown or logout options under System, the popup window apears as normal, but the there is no readable font/ characters. The characters look like what you see when you open a binary in a text editor, just thin little squares where the text should be.  All other menus and text are working fine.
Any idea?

  • [SOLVED]Gnome desktop and KDE menu suddenly gone

I run Arch on a second machine with both KDEmod and Gnome installed. When logging in today Gnome desktop was gone (wallpaper, icons, etc), but the panels were still there. All applications seem to function normally. Switching to Kdemod brought the following result: Desktop and icons are still visible, panels too, just all menu entries and the Konqueror and home icon in the panel are gone. I can still call up applications from the cli.
The "kmenuedit" command gives me the following error: "... could not read from /home/raisuli/menu/applications-kmeduedit.menu" which is not surprising because the file doesn't exist (anymore?).
Should I just reinstall Gnome and KDEmod or could there be another way?

hmm, i'm not sure what could have happened
maybe you can get them back if you re-install gnome-menus, archlinux-menus ,, i don't think kde comes with any as a pkg.
you might also be missing /usr/share/applications, most of the entries also come from desktop files in that directory

  • [solved] init 5 and logout from Xorg session -- crash

    Hi guys and gals!
Hope this is the right forum.
I have a strange issue here with restarting Xorg sessions. As long as I just boot up or use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to start and shutdown X, there's no problem at all, session manager (kdm) comes up properly and everything is just fine. But if I logout from the environment  (KDE3), Xorg crashes and I get a black screen with a blinking cursor or even full of strange y" symbols on vc/7.
On the other virtual consoles I'm able to run startx and this is still in runlevel 5!

Of course, I can switch to runlevel 3 and then 5 again to get a session manager, but you have to be root for this and I got other users here. So this is quite stupid.
I can't remember to had this problem before, it seems to be since my update yesterday. Repositories only current, extra and community, pacnew files are all merged with my configs. Don't see any cause.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks.

This is already in another thread : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=43799
It's probably a nvidia bug, but there is a workaround given at the end of the other thread.

  • 10.4.4 and MS Word Font Problems

On Tuesday of last week, I installed the 10.4.4 system update into my 450 MHz Power/PC G4 tower. Following the installation all of my Mircosoft applications (Word, Excel, etc) are crashing whenever I try an access their font menus. For some reason the system update must have changed the calls out to the fonts and the MS products are now all confused. If I do succeed in opening the font menu in Word (without the program shutting down), it is displayed as unintelligible garbage - in Excel the font menu appears with several font menus overlaid on top of one another making it impossible to distinguish which font is selected. It appears none of my other applications are similarly effected.
I have already attempted the following fixes with NO success:
    - re-installed Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac applications (twice)
    - updated to the most recent version of Word, Excel, etc.
    - trashed Font libraries and re-installed in various sequences
    - used disk utility to repair permissions
    - re-installed 10.4.4 using Mac OS X Update 10.4.4 COMBO installer
Any thoughts? Are other people reporting this problem? Can I download the 10.4.3 system update and run the installation (to go back to 10.4.3 from 10.4.4) or will that just screw everything up????

Thanks again Libertine for your replies. I had tried zapping the PRAM and saw the other comments already. None of it seemed to help. The drive would mount on the desktop, but usually spin down and back up after a few minutes. So on Saturday I decided to try to copy everything off it onto another drive. Since it usually would go too long before glitching I decided to copy one folder at a time. Numerous times it would glitch in the middle of a copy and I would have to unplug it and plug it back in then start the copy of that folder all over again. On several folders I found that it would glitch on the same file (digital photo) every time. If I removed the one offending file it would copy the entire folder. I have no idea what that's about. They were photo files and I could open and view the photo fine. So who knows. Anyway, I managed to get it all copied to a new drive. Now it gets real interesting. I did nothing else but to copy the files to a new drive. And since then the drive has not glitched even once. I am totally baffled. First Aid had said the drive was OK and DiskWarrior had no problems with it. I had optomized the directories on it a couple days before I upgraded to 10.4. So who knows? I guess it will remain a mystery. Once again, thanks for all your suggestions.

  • [SOLVED]Disable Shutdown and Reboot from XFCE

    Hi all
I would like to disable the shutdown and reboot buttons from XFCE (4.10) or to do disable shutdown/reboot systemwide.
I searched for specific xfce instructions and all i could find was using xfconf-query[1] and afaik it can only disable hibernate and suspend buttons

Creating that file (/etc/xdg/xfce4/kiosk/kioskrc) and setting which users could shutdown solved the problem

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3.8 annoying window resize problem

    Hello all fellow early-adopters :-)
A very annoying quirk I've noticed, moving from GNOME 3.6 to 3.8, is that it no longer remembers, nor retains, the size/positions I set for many of my application windows. For example, my mail client (Evolution) is sized to fill most of my screen (centrally), with Empathy and Skype as long narrow windows on both sides - giving me a nice, broad "communications" overview on that particular desktop (with dev tools etc open on others).
On 3.6, this layout was retained during my session, as well as next time I started these apps up.
In GNOME 3.8, not only does it insist that these windows are always started as small little bunched-up windows that I need to resize, but every time a window displays a notification/warning (message in internal yellow bar inside the window - such as loss of internet connection, mail retrieval failure etc) it resizes the windows spontaneously to a stupid, small size that overlays the other windows. This is driving me crazy!
Where can I learn a bit more about how window sizing / positioning works in GNOME 3.8, or is it finally time to switch to awesome wm? I want to love GNOME 3.8, I really do. It's so slick, but so... unpolished.
I want to dig in an assist with problems like these, but I need some pointers to some background material first to understand the problem. Is it the window manager? Is it the app?
** UPDATE: Doing a full system upgrade, as of May 18, 2013, has resolved this annoying problem. My windows now stay where they belong, and start with the same size they were closed with. GNOME is now pleasant to use again :-)

I really like GNOME 3.x though (and would like to understand the windowing behaviour), but if the annoying quirks are insurmountable, I will happily switch.
Man I love GNOME 3.x. I admire the courage they had to change, basically, everything, and I find myself more productive with my GNOME 3 Arch box than with my good ol' Slackware KDE 4 box. I just hate those bugs - for example I filed a task in their bugtracker for this window resize problem I have with gedit. If it's a love/hate relationship, I think it's marriage ^_^
With the 3.8 upgrade, deadbeef was having a similar problem with window size/position. I just recompiled it against the latest GTK+3 package upgrade (that came after the 'big upgrade' here on Arch) and it was fixed. But not with gedit
    bwat47 wrote:
Man I really hope this gets fixed soon, because aside from this one incredibly annoying issue I am loving gnome 3.8.
I get the feeling gnome badly needs more beta testers, sizable regressions like this in "stable" releases happen way too often sad.
I get the exact same feeling. Well bugs exist everywhere, there's no denying. But I think it would be wiser to 'alternate' the nature of each major stable release - one focusing on new features and one focusing on fixing bugs. For example if the only new features in GNOME 3.10 were the AppsFolder full implementation and the introduction of gnome-calendar, and the rest of the development cicle being devoted to fix bugs, I'd be more than happy.
Like Fedora and Ubuntu, the fixed 6-month release cycle colaborates with the bugs. They don't do like Debian or Slackware which are released 'when they are ready'.
EDIT: fout (yet) another bug. At least with facebook chat (haven't tested with other telepathy plugins) the buddy tray icon appear duplicate. Anybody with the same issue?

  • [SOLVED] XFCE shutdown and reboot buttons only dump out to prompt

Recently, after an update, the XFCE shutdown and reboot buttons began not working as expected.  Both are present, and I can click them.   They seem to try to do what they should, XFCE does terminate, but I am dumped out to a shell prompt rather than the shutdown or reboot happening.   What might be a possible cause of this behaviour that I can check and correct?
    Thanks,
    Bill

Are you running systemd or still a sysv/initscript setup?
If it is the latter take into account that consolekit has been dropped. Therefore, as far as I understand it, you are not 'authenticated' and thus not allowed to either shutdown or reboot.
Consider switching to systemd and a good start would be to comply with the 1st step of the systemd installation featured in the wiki to regain control of shutdown/reboot. Afterwards start investigating for the rest as initscripts support has ended.

    Read this
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Im … tion_Looks
    Particularly the section about GTK2+
Try installing gnome-themes-standard and gnome-themes-extras using pacman if the wiki did not help.

This is already in another thread : http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=43799
It's probably a nvidia bug, but there is a workaround given at the end of the other thread.

  • Urgent – QuarKXpress 8 and Type 1 Font Problem Under 10.6

    Hi,
I'm currently using Mac OS X 10.6 with QuarkXpress 8.1.6. on a Mac Pro.
When I open a document created in QuarkXpress 7.5 in QuarkXpress 8.1.6, some of the text is not flush with the top of its text box. It seems to have moved down by a millimetre or two. Also, when I copy text boxes that appear to be correct and paste them into a new page layout, the same problem occurs, where the text again appears to have moved down within its text box. Some older files created in QuarkXpress 6.5 seem to open okay.
*The QuarkXpress known issues page says the following: Mac OS 10.6 only – Due to a change in Apple's APIs, text that uses Type 1 fonts may display increased vertical spacing when you open a project in Snow Leopard.*
I've spoken to Quark's technical support team who have advised me to update my OS to version 10.6.3. to see if this corrects the problem.
Does anyone have the same issues and will updating to Mac OS X 10.6.3 correct the problem? If not, I'm in a bit of a predicament.
As usual, any advice would be great – thanks!

    Caveat to this post:
I don't use Quark, but I'd believe the author's own suggestions.
That said, before upgrading to 10.6.3, consider that you may not have full compatibility with 10.6.3 in other software. You may want to make a test bootable hard drive with just Quark on it, to see if it solves your problem and then check to see if all your other essential applications and drivers run as expected. Quark has its own forums here:
    http://forums.quark.com/
Where I'd ask the questions to see what other users have been using to fix the issue.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.2 - Applications Menu empty after update

After updating all my boxes from 3.0 to 3.2, one of them got the Applications Menu wiped. The .desktop files are all there but none show up in the Menu, it's just empty.
Apart from that everything seems to work just fine, did anyone came across a similiar problem or knows a solution ? I tried to google how to regenerate the Menu but failed to find anything useful and/or gnome3 related.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome+udisks/devicekit+CD/DVD Drive Problem

Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster here!
I've been having a problem with my CD/DVD drives for some time now.
When I issue the eject command via shell or if I press the eject button the trey will only open for an instant and then close again.
if I run "udisks --inhibit-all-polling" the drive will let me open it normally.
Once a disk is inserted the system won't auto mount it though.(even after exiting the command mentioned above)
If I don't log in using Gnome(KDE instead) everything works fine.
But once I log in using Gnome the drive is all messed up until the next reboot.
So, I think its related to Gnome and udisks/device-kit.
It has been like this for more than six months.
udisks/device-kit has been updated several times since then and it never seems to fix anything.
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one with this oproblem.
Does anybody have any info on a fix for this?
I mean, this is basic functionality.
Even M$ can handle the freaking eject button! lol
edit: I should mention that other removable media like USB flash drives work as they should.

    AH!
That did it... removed ide from the hooks in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
It's funny, I searched the forum but I don't remember seeing that particular thread.... strange.
Either I over looked it, or I need to go and re-learn how to search the web...
It's probably time to stop using the ide drivers, I don't think they are being maintained anymore anyway.
    Thank you very much!

  • Wine and yet another font problem

So I upgraded my system (had to load lots of stuff, Xorg, Wine, the kernel..) and now my Wine fonts look like this:
    http://koti.kapsi.fi/anpurola/winecfg.png
Some fonts are ok, but most of them are unreadable. I mostly run poker clients. I tried to delete my .wine directory, and install fonts again with winetricks, didn't help.
Does this have something to do with the new Xorg? I had to remove RgbPath and AutoAddDevices from xorg.conf BTW, to get it work.

    I've found this help:
Using wine over remote X11 sessions and No text or damaged text displayed
Please make sure not have added any fonts to wine. Font conflicts can sometimes cause a similar issue. If a fresh wine prefix.(A copy of wine that nothing has been done to yet) Is having this problem. Try setting following in registry
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver]
    "ClientSideWithRender"="N"
Place above in text file and it can be inserted into registry by "regedit settings.txt".
This was report as been required of OS X on the 1 Dec 2007. This may change. Please apply only as required.
but it doesn't work for me. Anybody has an idea how to do it?
Wow it works! Thank you! Too bad if some of you still have problems.. BTW I'm using nvidia-96xx driver.
edit: Now that I tried different programs, I noticed some of the graphics won't work For example, I don't see any buttons in programs such as Spotify or Full Tilt Poker client..
Whoa thanks. It worked for me too.
    how you ran regedit?
