I tried entering GNOME with gdm.
Before gdm runs, it freezes at a black screen for about a minute, then flashes the "Oh No" screen.  Afterward, it allows me to login. After logging in, it freezes on the grey background of gdm for another minute. Once it displays the "Oh No" screen, it takes me back to a black screen, repeating the cycle.
Also, I upgraded X11 at the same time as GNOME.
Edit: Here's a recent Xorg log, if it helps.

  • MOVED: Battlefield 4 black screen crash after intro

This topic has been moved to GAMING Graphics Cards.

I've reinstalled, reset settings, lowered frequency, done about everything I could find online and same black screen crash.
Then I used an earlier save and... it WORKS!!!
Resolved!, somehow the latest save file seemed to get corrupt when reinstalling the graphics drivers...? Is that possible?
    Thanks to all.
A number of people reported similar problems on other forums.
Resetting the settings or loading a save tended to fix the problems. No idea why.
Either way, glad it's fixed. Enjoy your computer!

  • Battlefield 4 black screen crash after intro

    Hi,
I've just upgraded from a Palit GTX 770 2Gb to a MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G and Battlefield 4 which used to work absolutely fine on my old card now crashes everytime to black screen "Battlefield 4 has stopped working, an error has occured..." since I installed the MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G.
I have the latest BIOS NV316MH.186 and latest NVIDIA 350.12.
I tried silent mode as I read someting about trying a lower frequency but same problem.
Other games are working great such as GTA V
Is there a fix? Can you help please?

    It was the PRAM.

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011) w/ML Black screen crash everyday since 1.69f4 SMC update

SInce the 1.69f4 SMC upadte installed though the App Store my Macbook has been randomly showing a black screen and the only way to get out of it is to hard reset. After that it takes a couple hours to get going again. Frequently when booting up after the black screen, the Apple logo and spinning ball disappear and it just sits on a white screen with the fan spinning like mad.
I have searched around and tried the SMC, PRAM and hdd disconnect but none of them seem to be a realible fix. It just fixes it self and boots normally when it feels like it.
I've read that black screen crashes can be a problem with the logic board but when it does boot it works perfectly ?? There is no log of any interruption in console or any sort of crash report. When it does restart there is no "your computer had a problem" message either.
Ive only had the laptop for <18months and its has never left my house, it stays docked to thunderbolt display so there cant be any physical damage.
Is there anyway to roll back the SMC firmware? it worked perfectly before this update now im losing 1-3 hours a day trying to get it started again.

do you have any proof fir this trick, because mymackbook pro early 2011 never used SSD for system and stroage.
but i had replace hardisk  from toshiba 500 GB  5400rpm to toshiba to 1 TB 7200 rpm were normal almost 1 years.but gettong problem at least  2 month ago .
    thanks
everybody  who's get try for this trick, please posting it.

  • Downloaded a movie although can only get to about halfway before it goes into black screen.

I recently rented the movie American Pie. I continued watching, but near the halfway point, the video went into black screen, like it didn't download the movie properly. So I thought maybe the rent expired or something. I downloaded the full version of American Pie, and the same thing happened around halfway. I reported this to Itunes but they didn't give me any advice on what to do or how to fix this. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Start with a couple of simple things. Before trying either, unplug any USB or Firewire devices. Leaving only the keyboard and mouse connected.
    1) Start, or restart the Mac and immediately hold down the CommandOption+PR keys to zap the PRAM. Keep holding the keys for four startup chimes. Release the keys and see if it will boot. If not, go on to step two.
    2) Resetting the Mac from Open Firmware.
Restart the Mac and immediately hold down the CommandOption+OF keys. This will boot you into open firmware. When it stops, you will be looking at a ">" prompt. At the prompt, type each of the next three lines, followed by pressing the Return key. Type each line exactly as show (without the (press Return) part), no capital letters or spaces.
    reset-nvram (press Return)
    set-defaults (press Return)
    reset-all (press Return)
The Mac should restart after pressing Return on the third command.
    Let us know what happened.

  • Just upgraded to i tunes 11 but it crashes after 15 minutes...help please?

i have windows 7 and after the upgrade to itunes 11 misic, videos, tv programmes keep crashing after 15 minutes???
help would be very much appreciated

The problems are caused by third party input managers/enhancers that have not yet been updated by their developers to comply with the standards used by Safari 4.1.and/or Safari 5.
    In your case these are:
    0x1158d0000 - 0x1158d2fff +com.MTWB.SafariAddon.osax ??? (1.0) <07F89448-3C9B-4893-46B5-D46138999B9F> /Users/petecathiivr/Library/ScriptingAdditions/MTWB.osax/Contents/MacOS/MTWB
0x1158d6000 - 0x1158dbfff +com.MakeWebBetter.FastBrowserSearch ??? (1.0) <2F66120A-A252-0AC5-DD33-C59C78CAC902> /Users/petecathiivr/Library/MTWB/Plugins/FastBrowserSearchPlugin.bundle/Content s/MacOS/FastBrowserSearchPlugin
You fill find them in one or either of these folders:
    Home/Library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/Library/Application Support
although the exact location is indicated in your crash report as quoted above - look under 'Binary Images'.
Close Safari and delete them, then restart Safari and it should be working normally. Alternatively drag them to the desktop and restart Safari. then add them back one at a time, restarting Safari every time, until you find the one (or more) causing the crash.
Check with the developers of the plug-ins in question for updates that are Safari 5 compliant.

That kind of panic is usually caused by a memory fault. Remove half the memory modules and test. Then switch and test the other half.

  • [Solved] Amilo XI 2550 - Black screen after fresh install

    Dear archlinux users,
I have been reading the archlinux wiki and forums since I started using arch several years ago. It was always possible to solve the problems I ran into by consulting these webpages, therefore a big thanks to the community for the provided help.
Two weeks ago I installed arch on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo XI 2550. The first problem I ran into was that booting the live-cd resulted in a black screen and I could not even start with installing arch. This problem was solved with the kernel parameter 'nomodeset'.
The first boot of the freshly installed arch also resulted in a black screen after the GRUB menu which was perfectly displayed. After some searching (here and here and ...) I plugged in an external monitor and it showed the login screen. I then installed KDE because I thaught the problem might not show up with X and KDE running. After the login to KDE I realized that the brightness of the laptop display is nearly black but not totally. It seems as if the brightness is at a very low level, but brightness cannot be controlled with the Fn+F8 or Fn+F9 commands. But I see a OSD that indicates that the controls are used but without effect. So at the moment it is only possible to work on the laptop with another display connected to it.
    Maybe of use:
    ls /sys/class/backlight/
    acpi_video0
    radeon_bl0
    less /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/bl_power

Until now and amongst others I tried the following things.
    Using kernel parameters
    video.use_native_backlight=1
    video.use_native_backlight=0
    acpi_osi=linux
    acpi_backlight=vendor
and others I just cannot remember.
    Masking backlight
    systemctl mask systemd-backlight@backlight:acpi_video0.service
    systemctl mask systemd-backlight@backlight:radeon_bl0.service
    Setting bl_power
    echo 1 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/bl_power
    echo 1 > /sys/class/backlight/radeon_bl0/bl_power
Nothing of the above was improving the situation.
Your help on the problem would be highly appreciated.
    Best regards

    Hello Trilby,
    thanks for the reply.
Trilby wrote:If nomodeset worked with the installation medium, why haven't you tried that for the same problem on your installed system?
The kernel parameter 'nomodeset' results in a working display but without X support, due to the fact that with 'nomodeset' there is no KMS support and therefore no X. But nevertheless I tried it and as expected X did not start.
Trilby wrote:Could you also post information about your graphics card and what drivers you've installed.
The graphics card is a Radeon HD 2700 and according to the above dmesg log it is recognized as RV 630. The radeon module is loaded via /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and xf86-video-ati (1:7.5.0-1) is installed.
I hope the provided information is what you asked for, thanks for your help.

  • After installing gnome packages, always black screen when startx

    Hello everyone,
I am a newbie to Arch Linux, also not quite experienced at bare-bones Linux installation. I installed Arch Linux by following the steps in the installation guide up to X. Then I installed X by referring to the wiki Beginner's Guide: pacman -S xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xinit. Then I installed vmware video: pacman -S extra/xf86-video-vmware. Now I tested startx. It works fine, tmw fires up, xterm windows open and xclock displaying. I can also switch to other virtual consoles by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1~F6 (on VMware, I do Ctrl+Alt+(Space,F1))
Then I did: pacman -S gnome. Because I didn't startx during the installation, and I didn't install dbus by that time, I got some warning message regarding dbus, "GConf-WARNING **: Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon:", but that was installing gnome-shell, gnome-terminal, etc., so I guess it doesn't affect gnome startup. However, after this installation, startx goes into a black screen and cannot switch to other virtual consoles by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Fn. And even if I remove all files from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d, leaving only the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (and no ~/.xinitrc), it still doesn't work. The /etc/xinit/xinitrc contains starting of twm, xterm and xclock near its end.
Could some experts shed some light on this?
Thanks a lot and best regards,
    Robbie

Mr.Elendig wrote:There is several knows issues with vmware and xorg 1.14. Check your logs for segfault in X and other relevant errors.
Following your suggestion and search, I found this:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=158882
I uninstalled the vmware video driver (pacman -R local/xf86-video-vmware) and installed the vesa driver (pacman -S extra/xf86-video-vesa). Now the desktop is visible, but freezes after being visible. I'll try to revert to x.org 1.13 and retry.
