[SOLVED] gnome update killed sound on kde 4.9.2 system
the recent gnome-updates in testing seem to have broken my sound on kde 4.9.2. My sound system relied on pulseaudio, phonon-gstreeamer and gstreamer0.10. Since the update there ist only a 'dummy' entry in my soundmixer and no sound anymore. Did anybody experience the same?
Edit: Just downgraded with pacman -Syuu with all testing repos disabled. Sound is there again. This IS an update problem.

I deleted pacman.log after a lot of testing, removing and up- and downgrading because it was quite unreadable at that time.
But if I enable the testing repos again, pacman -Syu wants to upgrade these packages:

I have a Mac 10.6.8 which on the last Adobe Flash update killed my sound.
I know nothing of computers - it is a glorified typewriter to me, so please advise how to remedy this in simple terms.
Technical terms are the death for me!Hi,
Could you please let us know some more details?
Please go to the following page and let us know the Flash Player version and browser you use: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html#main_Find_the_Flash_ Player_version_installed_on_your_machine
Do you mean to say you don't hear any sound at all?

Last edited by manolos (2009-06-11 13:40:08)Just tryed playing a wav with aplay and it didn't give me any errors, but I didn't hear anything if that helps anymore. Running a amixer set MASTER 70% unmute also gives me the unable to find simple control 'MASTER',0 error too, though I can change the volume fine with alsamixer so I'm not sure why that is. The correct module is loaded (snd-hda-intel). Otherwise I'm at a complete loss.
edit: amixer set MASTER 70% gives me the same error on an ubuntu livecd where sound does work so that seems normal. I don't know what changed, but I can now open the volume control so the gstreamer error goes away, however I still can't get any sound, be it with aplay or something else. I'm starting to think the solution may be to pass on arch and move to something better.

[solved] gnome update issue!
hello!
i have justed updated my gnome. after restarting the x-server all icons, menus and panels are broken.
tested it with a new user (no old configs), but the error still remains.
update: 2.18 -> 2.20
can somebody help?
mfg iggy
Last edited by iggy (2007-10-15 21:27:02)I don't have those issues -- and I think it was mentioned that it has something to do with some of the gtk themese and to try changing those. I am having something odd though. When I switch desktops it takes the machine a few seconds to redraw the icons on the desktop. Any clues as to what's going on there? I'm using "murrine" if that matters.

Hi.
After ios7 udate i lost the sound when making phoncalls. I can´t hear anything, but the one i call can hear me. When turning on loudspeaker it works fine, also with airpods and bluetooth.
Has anyone experienced this? More important; has anyone any solution?Hi kjellsagt,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. This article has some steps you can try when you're unable to hear through the receiver:

[SOLVED] Latest update kills wobbly windows!
Ran an -Syu at work today (first time in a week) and my wobbly windows went excrutiatingly slow - though everything else in compiz worked fine.
Fixed problem through a downgrade (am using intel not ATI or Nvidia) - anyone else have the same problem?
** EDIT - solved in different thread **
Last edited by floke (2008-02-22 09:35:10)OK. I was trying to solve a completely different problem and finally figured this out.
If I use Xrender rather than OpenGL for rendering desktop effects, this stuff doesn't work. (And I can trigger errors in .xsession-errors by making changes to the desktop effect settings and trying to apply them.)
I reset all desktop effects to default in system settings and got the effects working again.
Trouble is, I can't remember why I switched from OpenGL in the first place so I'm worried something else is about to jump at me! -
[SOLVED] latest gnome update is english only
Hi,
after the latest GNOME update, my GNOME is in english instead of german, although LANG in /etc/rc.conf is set to de_DE@euro and didn't change.
Any ideas?I did that as well, but gnome (or perhaps another script that was updated) seems to set LANG always to en_US:
[ searinox@sto] ~ (16G free)% echo $LANG -=Sun 13.02.2005 10:57:58=-
en_US
LANG is in rc.conf set to de_DE@euro. -
[SOLVED] Plasma Desktop segfaults after recent KDE update to ver. 4.6
Today after upgrading some amount of packages, including the new KDE 4.6, my Plasma Desktop "segfaults" every single time I login into my account. I tried to send some information regarding this issue using KDE's internal reporting system, but unfortunately it tells me, that those information are irrelevant. Does anyone experience "segfaulting" of the Plasma Desktop after recent KDE upgrade? I'm looking for some help on how to solve this issue, as for the moment my Arch is dead...
Last edited by Zibi1981 (2011-01-28 18:47:24)panosk wrote:
Actually, it is KDE that is giving you trouble, not the OS . When you reach the kdm login screen, don't login. Instead, switch to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1, for example) and login from there. Then, you can see a list with all your plasmoids with
plasmapkg -l
If you find the culprit plasmoid, and it is a plasmoid downloaded outside Arch's repos (from kde-look.org, for example), remove it with
plasmapkg -r plasmoid_name
If the plasmoid is installed as a package, it is probably better to uninstall/upgrade it using pacman.
panosk wrote:do you use some extra plasmoid? if so, you need to rebuild them.
Hi all,
I have the same problem. I tried using tty, but I got "cannot access to X server". Than I tried
Alt+F2 to run Terminal, I used
plasmapkg -l
in order to see the list of all the plasmoids, but I couldn't find the "culprit" plasmoid. I don't know if I am doing it right. Here the list of my plasmapkg:
[encho@x~]$ plasmapkg -l
plasmapkg(1986)/libplasma Plasma::PackageStructurePrivate::createPackageMetadata: No metadata file in the package, expected it at: "/home/encho//metadata.desktop"

Windows update killed the sound on HP Pavilion
This is a HP Pavilion g7-1261nr Notebook PC. We were watching a video last week with the sound through the system speaker. The show was interrupted for a microsoft update. The updates installed, and laptop rebooted. When it started up again, the unit had no sound. I have rolled back the update and reinstalled. No changes. Updated the bios again and again, no change.
Windows has no answers. Any ideas?> Hi:

Thanks, Paul. I rolled back and reinstalled the Windows update.

OK, now I have don that and still no sound. Not even the annoying system sounds from Windows. The speaker tray still has a red X, and when I click on it, "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem,"
No change. Any other suggestions, please. -
[SOLVED] Gnome 3.6 desktop stopped working after few boots
I have been an avid ArchLinux user for many years but really need some help on this one. It drives me nuts.
It started with the big systemd/gnome 3.6 update, went pretty smooth, got GDM and then my desktop. I think that at some point I added an Exchange account in the online account panel. I think the next reboot I could not pass GDM, only the Oops windows. Un-installed a couple of suspicious gnome-shell-extensions but still no luck with Gnome although KDE, LXDE and XFCE are working just fine. I then moved my home folder in order to start from a fresh one but still no luck after one reboot. Then I got tired and thought that maybe it was time to do a clean systemd install and switch to SSD. That's what I did and got my desktop working pretty easily. Installed Equinox theme and couple of extensions via the online service (mainly to hide icons). I did many reboot during that time and it was fine. Then I started reinstalling a lot of packages from texlive to audacity. In the meantime I added two online accounts; one gmail when I asked to sync calendar & contacts and another one with an Exchange account (calendar sync only). Gmail account seemed to work fine and I could see the calendar events in both evolution and the top bar. Exchange didn't work so I installed evolution-ews package and then continued to install my other many packages. I then rebooted and guess what? Ooops is back. This time dmesg says:
systemd-journald[210]: File /var/log/journal/03137ccde67641f0a7ff7949e7384a8f/user-1000.journal corrupted or uncleanly shut down, renaming and replacing.

Removed ~/.local but didn't fix the problem. It is official ... I am really lost!
I removed Equinox theme, telepathy-gabble but still no luck.

I found that the following official package will break my Gnome 3.6 pretty easily:
- pygtksourceview2 : this one instantly crashes Gnome and you are no longer able to log in.
- pycups and pysmbc : doesn't crash immediately but after 10s you get the oops.
Let's remove them from the real install to see if it fixes the problem.
[EDIT] Tried again to install the above three package inside a fresh Gnome install living into a VM and it didn't crash. See post above regarding my broken Gnome which was related to fingerprint-gui package from AUR.

[SOLVED] - [Gnome 3] GDM error dialog "failed to start session GNOME"
Hi,
Just installed Gnome 3 from testing.
First boot crashed, but that was a missing library for splashy, so removed splash from my grub boot line.
Now the system boots to GDM. I can start my Xfce session without any issues, but if I select Gnome, I get a dialog "Failed to start session GNOME".
Following is my GDM greeter log:

Think I have found my problem.
The Arch Wiki for Gnome 3 has the line for installing to a new system
# pacman -Syu testing/gnome
This installs gnome 3, but does not include gnome-shell or gnome-panel
Just installing them now. Will report back shortly.
Maybe the Wiki should be updated to reflect this, or the package testing/gnome updated to depend on gnome-shell and gnome-panel.
Cheers. -
Gnome update broke volume control, bkgd setting, etc.
on my lenovo laptop (runs arch-64) things like the volume up/down buttons used to work, and i used to have a wallpaper background with my openbox desktops. after the latest gnome update now all of these things are broken. i also can't adjust the system alert volume via the gnome control center. does anyone know if these are common issues that will probably be solved soon in a future update, or whether i should start digging and hacking?

Did what you said. PCM was the only one muted.
Oddly, I recently started having the opposite problem. KDE startup and other systems sounds have stopped playing. All my other sound (mplayer, flash, etc) work fine. I can play the startup sound fine when opening it via dolphin. It just doesn't play on startup, or any other system sound. I know this happened after a recent update but I am not sure what or when caused it. Startup sound isn't that important to me but fixing it is. No luck so far. -
T410 - Sound card stopped working after Lenovo System Update
hi all!
yesterday I performed a system update trough the ThinkVantage System Update 3, I chose a complete update (even the BIOS).
After the update, the sound card is not working anymore: everything in the control panel looks fine, volume is up and all's connected, but no sound is coming out, with the exception of the skype system sound when starting/quitting the application...
No system restore is possible (it looks disabled by our IT dept), updated the drivers via windows update, but no help.
Any clue?
Thanks in advance!
Riccardo
Solved!
Go to Solution.Remove the audio-driver via Controlpanel - Add/Remove Software
Download the audio driver from Lenovo
Install the driver manually

Isit true to say that iPod Updater kills your iPod?
Hello all,
First, sorry for my poor English. I am not a professional nor a technician and I could be wrong, so please correct me. There are many problems reported mainly from the PC users that their iPod can't be recognized nor mounted after the installation of the latest iPod updater. Most of them claimed that the iPod updater kills their beloved iPods. Before we jump to a conclusion, we must understand what is iPod, and how does the iPod update work.
I believe that iPod equals a basic computer and need a OS in order to communicate with the PC. Installation the Updater will format the Hard disk of the iPod and then install the simple OS, so if we open the iPod updater file, it will show a window with two buttons i.e. Restore and Update, an Update is to copy the latest OS over the old version, but the Restore will format the hard disk before it install the OS over it. And importantly, during this process, the iPod needs sufficient of power to complete the upgrade, however, the problem comes just after the format, and the PC's USB (only 2 will work not 1.1) does not supply the stable power, even some cases that iPod does not get charge in the half way of installatin (a proper installation, you will see a running bar showing on the iPod screen just after the format), so you can imagine a hard disk got format but only got an uncompleted OS, of course, the iPod would not get recognized and mounted, and do not manage to communicate with the computer. At this stage the iPod will show a Sad iPod icon, a folder with exclamaiton points or a battery charging icon.
So, what would you do when it reach at this stage, a Reset would not work, and you would not able to do the Restore as the iPod is totally unrecognized by the computer.
Therefore, is there anyway to solve this problem, in my opinion and from my past experience, the answer is "yes", the simple way is to put your iPod in Disk Mode, when it plug to the computer, it will show as an external Hard Disk, you must fix it by doing a format (RESTORE would not work at this stage as it still can't recognized and mounted), in Mac we can use "Disk Utility" but the XP would not allow you to do the format in FAT32. After the formatting, replug the iPod with the computer, then it can be mounted and allow you to do the RESTORE.
In addition, I find an interesting point is, if your iPod formatted with a Mac, you will have better chance to be mounted with a PC, even your iPod does not complete the process of the installation of the iPod updater, and a PC formatted iPod will be likely to be fixed by a Mac as well.
How should we do before the update of the lastest software, for the XP user please do the following:-
1. Go to the system restore and create a check point in order to revert back to the previous version of the iPod updater, or do the back up using the 3rd party software such as Ghost or Go Back.
2. To have a test and make sure the PC's USB works properly. You can use the iPod or a PDA, and just make sure it got charged.
3. Have your iPod a full charge before the installation of the iPod updater
So, who is the main killer for the iPod?
For further infomation please read the following link - which wrote by a groups of great people - thank your guys
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68ae8668Yes, it will erase all your data with your iPod. Please do not format until you have the back up of your iPod. Very likely that your iPod was formatted by a Mac, which can't be read by your PC. Download a software called Xplay
