[SOLVED]Gnome Wayland won't start
Hello everyone.
I was hoping to try out gnome with wayland but i have problem. I normally install gnome-shell package and dependencies from official source with gdm, than i follow Wayland thread on ArchWiki, XWayland-git installed so is mutter-wayland. I normally kill Lightdm and start GDM with systemctl but when i choose Gnome Wayland session screen blacks out and i am after a few seconds on GDM screen. GDM starts diffrent sessions mostly with no problem (but session chooser not always appears and after fail to login to Gnome Wayland it have problem with different session- however not always, it's basically random). If it matters- i have Intel iGPU 2500 with Asus UEFI board- rest is not relevent. My primary desktop is XFCE with lightdm but in past I've got almost every desktop and maybe wayland doesn't like some files on my hard drive.
Peace.

Yes. Everything appears to be right in place.
Edit. Never mind. I've reinstalled gnome and wayland packages and it works like charm.
Thread solved.

[SOLVED] Gnome 3 won't start after kernel upgrade
I have upgraded to kernel 3.0, and now I am getting the following error when I try to start gdm:
** (gdm-binary:936): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
** (gdm0binary:936): WARNING **: Could not acquire name: bailing out
Can anybody explain what the deal is?
Last edited by spiritwalker (2011-08-17 16:50:44)theseus, thank you for the reply. I thought you can only start gnome using some kind of display manager. If I understood you correctly, I did 'telinit 5' and then 'startx' with the folowing results:
INIT: Switching to runlevel: 5
INIT: cannot execute "/usr/bin/xdm" <---- This line repeats 10 times
INIT: ID "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
But when I did 'who -r' I got this:
run-level 5 2011-08-16 02:26 last = 4
So I tried to start X wich resulted in the following:

Also, arch is installed in a virtual box, so I didn't install any video drivers like nvidia.
Thanks

spiritwalker, please do not post pictures of this large size: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … s_and_Code
In this specific case you could have made use the log files in /var/log and posted the relevant info in [ code ] tags.
Besides, this way you will get used to work with logs, which is mandatory in Arch, imo.

[SOLVED] gnome-terminal won't start
Well, first of all good day and thanks in advance.
gnome-terminal is not launching. I get:
ERROR:terminal-app.c:1433:terminal_app_init: assertion failed: (app->system_font_desc != NULL)
This started with no particular trigger, and now i am using aterm, but i like better gnome-terminal, so any help would be appreciated.

Hello. I cant start Gnome-shell and it force to Fallback. In addition to, in the Fallback mode, i can't change any parameters of gnome.

This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.

(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
I have ATI Graphic card and installed Catalyst 12.4
How can i fix it?

After I updated my system on Friday (24th), Gnome shell won't start.
Whether I open it with `startx` or GDM, it crashes with the "Oh, no! Something has gone wrong" message. With GDM, it seems the whole of GDM crashes, as it happens before I see anything of the UI, and I don't have auto login enabled. For `startx`, I don't see any UI there either.
Here is my Xorg.0.log: http://sprunge.us/hhZj
Here is my .xinitrc: http://sprunge.us/VjSJ
Here is the stderr from startx: http://sprunge.us/UCHj
I tried cleaning all gnome extensions, to no avail. I tried creating a new user, and run gnome with startx from there, and that worked. I tried cleaning my ~, and launching gnome with startx, but that didn't work.
Any ideas on what might be wrong, or how to further debug this?

[solved] gnome-keyring won't save the passphrase for ssh-keys
Hello,
I'm trying to use the gnome-keyring to store the passphrases for my ssh-keys in gnome-terminal.
I started to generate my ssh-keys as described in this article.
After that I transfered the key via "ssh-copy-id" to my other computer.
Then I connected to that computer via nautilus and stored the passphrase. Now it is no problem to connect without typing in the passphrase again.
When I try to connect to that computer via a gnome-terminal ssh asks every time for the passphrase.
I tried a lot of things, but I can't solve this issue.
Does anybody got an idea how to tell the gnome-keyring that it should store the passphrase for connections via terminals?
Any help is appreciated Maybe I just don't see the solution, but I'm still new to ssh.
Thanks in advance!
David
Last edited by senior_spielbergo (2011-08-02 15:01:04)Hi alexcriss,
I tried to open the terminal from the application menu, but it didn't help.
I searched the forum for "GDM keyring" and I found a few topics dealing with similar problems, but I couldn't find a solution.
I have forgotten to tell, that when I enter
ssh-add -L
it returns
The agent has no identities.
Typing
ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_ecdsa
returns:
Enter passphrase for /home/david/.ssh/id_ecdsa:
Error reading response length from authentication socket.
Could not add identity: /home/david/.ssh/id_ecdsa
Maybe this helps to find the error.
Thanks again,

[solved] xorg proglem - won't start, but no error
Hi folks!
I'm new to Arch, my first installation, but I used to use Gentoo in the past. Got a problem with making X to run. I followed the guide from the wiki, but I didn't manage it to work.
I'm using nVidia drivers from 173xx branch (GF 5900XT). Hal is working properly, I hope - /etc/rc.d/restart successes w\o errors.
At first, I tried to run X without xorg.conf and it complained about missing 'nv' and 'vesa' (i hope) modules. Then, after running nvidia-configure (/etc/X11/xorg.conf was successfully created) and startx - screen blanks (no nVidia logo shown) and after ~3 seconds it comes back with massage "waiting for X server to shut down". In /var/log/Xorg.0.log there were no lines starting with (EE).
Then I tried to configure X with "X -configure". After making new config and replacing the older one at /etc/X11/xorg.conf and running X with command startx (as user), it complained about missing type1 and truetype modules ((EE) lines as far as I remember). After installing missing packages/modules:
http://dpaste.com/60888/
it still won't start. Screen blanks, no nVidia logo shown, and later comes back with well known screen ( usual text... look over /var/log/Xorg.0.log for more details...). Only message after default text id "waiting for X server to shut down", with no (WW) nor (EE) lines above.
More useful data comes:
Xorg.0.log
http://dpaste.com/60883/
xorg.conf
http://dpaste.com/60885/
tail of dmesg
http://dpaste.com/60887/
If you need anything else to see, request!
Any idea? To me, it looks like nvidia driver bug or some xorg bug (or maybe just a misconfiguration)
In ~/.xinitrc stays only "exec startfluxbox", but even with empty file, situation is the same.
Thank you in advance,
Daniel

You should read about the new feature of Xorg, input hotplugging: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … otplugging
A more detailed explanation can be found here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging
Be sure to copy the fdi file in the correct directory.
Since I am using also the 173xx branch, here is my xorg.conf, hope it will be useful for you:

EDIT: Not 100% sure but I seem to recall that the nvidia driver has some problems when you don't set the default depth. Add that line

rm -r ~/.config/gnome-mplayer
Also try running gnome-mplayer from a terminal and post its output when trying to play a file.
Deleting the gnome-mplayer folder did the job. It works now thanks.
The only thing is, if I change any settings whatsoever in gnome-mplayer preferences, it stops again. I guess I'll just stick to all the stock settings... -

I have (of course) but I find myself in a circular situation apparently. 'logind' is a systemd thing and as you can see from the above thread I'm trying to switch to systemd but am having problems. So until that issue is solved I could use other suggestions... -
[SOLVED] (gnome) NetworkManager does not start on login
Hello!
Like the title says, the NetworkManager utility does not start with gnome on login. Every time I log in I have to start it manually by going into the terminal and running su, then running NetworkManager. I have googled and searched in the wiki, but did not find a good answer. Some threads talk about doing something with the gnome-session but it did not work for me.
So, which conf file do I need to edit to have it start on startup?
I hope I provided enough information.
Thanks in advance for the answers.

Yes, and yes. The network-manager-applet is installed (v 0.8.2-2) and my rc.conf looks like this:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus network netfs crond gdm)
You have to deactivate network daemon and add network manager instead, somethig like this:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus !network networkmanager netfs crond gdm)
Read the wiki as RaisedFist said.
Thanks! This solved it. -
[SOLVED]Modem-manager won't start with Network manager
Hi,
I have a problem with getting modem-manager work under gnome. After first Arch install to this laptop, Network manager didn't show my 3G-modem, so I installed modem-manager and usb_modeswitch. Modem is Huawei E367 and it works well with wvdial. Only problem is to get it working with Network manager.
From output of dmesg I see that there is an error, when Network manager is trying to start modem-manager:
[ 3224.705193] do_trap: 322 callbacks suppressed
[ 3224.705198] modem-manager[3112] trap int3 ip:7ff7baab4143 sp:7fff996e62b0 error:0

[ 3224.834985] modem-manager[3130] trap int3 ip:7f5adda9a143 sp:7fff8a70a4a0 error:0
From /var/log/messages.log I found also something:
Apr 14 16:02:14 localhost NetworkManager[713]: <info> trying to start the modem manager...
Apr 14 16:02:14 localhost dbus[651]: [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.ModemManager' (using servicehelper)
Apr 14 16:02:14 localhost dbus[651]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.ModemManager'
Apr 14 16:02:14 localhost NetworkManager[713]: <info> modem-manager is now available
Apr 14 16:02:14 localhost modem-manager: libhal_ctx_init() failed: (null)
Apr 14 16:02:14 localhost NetworkManager[713]: <info> the modem manager disappeared
If I try to run modem-manager manually with debug:
$ sudo modem-manager --debug
** ERROR **: libhal_ctx_init() failed: (null)
Make sure the hal daemon is running?
So it seems to be because of hal isn't running, if I try to start hal daemon it fails:
$ sudo /etc/rc.d/hal start
:: Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer [FAIL]
I also tried to start hal at boot by putting it to DAEMONS in rc.conf. but didn't start either.
The laptop is Asus X61SL with x86_64 version of ArchLinux.
Kernel: 3.3.1-1-ARCH
Would be cool if anyone can solve this.

It didn't help. Network manager doesn't show anything related 3G.
I don't think it's usb_modeswitch since 3G stick works great with wvdial on same system. Could it be a bug on modem-manager?
I start only the Network manager on boot, but while Network manager tries to start modem-manager, it throws error continuously in dmesg. Error is the same as in first post. -
[Solved] Gnome-terminal does not start (fresh install)
Whenever I install gnome-terminal, I have the following message displayed:
(gconftool-2:28984): GConf-WARNING **: Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon:/usr/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally without any error message
Then whenever I launch gnome-terminal I have this message:
** (gnome-terminal:1102): CRITICAL **: atk_bridge_adaptor_cleanup: assertion `inited' failed
The problem seems to be related to dbus. I have even tried guake which complains explicitly about "No D-BUS daemon running".
Systemctl is telling me that d-bus is up and running.
Any help appreciated.
