[SOLVED] GNOME won't start properly

Hello,
I have just started with Arch and already encountered a newbie problem I installed Arch ok using the beginner's guide, the base system is ok, I got up to the point of installing desktop environment (GNOME3 is my choice). I installed mesa, drivers, X etc and Gnome ofc. I added "... dbus gdm..." into DAEMONS array and rebooted. The blue Gnome wallpaper shows normally but the login window is not the usual black Shell one, but grey old-looking instead (fallback mode?). I've got only the ugly X's clock cursor but I can click on my user's name and login. However, nothing appears, just the same blue background and the clock cursor
Anyone has an idea what I might be doing wrong? Thanks

Please post your rc.conf. Also, which video card and drivers and how did you install Gnome?

    Dear archies,
I using fluxbox right now but I wanted migrate to Gnome 3.2.1 but I have problem with start. I used lxdm as login manager (becase there I can chooose session - but I tried gdm also with the same result). Login was OK but then I got just gnome default "blue-zebra" background and that's all... No gnome-shell, no gnome-panel, nothing. Computer doesn't freeze but no desktop. Fluxbox starts normal.

It also sounds a lot like this issue.
The solution there seemed to be (re)installing gnome-shell and libltdl.
Also, have you tried gdm?  I don't know the ins-and-outs but it seems gdm is becoming more important for a functional gnome session.

  • [SOLVED] GDM/Gnome won't start after update

Today after I run pacman -Suy, GDM/Gnome won't start anymore after reboot. The error message I get after GDM starts is:
Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please contact a system administrator
Does anyone have any idea what happened and how can I recover the system?
Here is the complete log for the update:
    http://bpaste.net/show/209520/
Here is the journalctl -u gdm log:
    http://sprunge.us/LEOU
    Here is tail -2000 /var/log/messages.log:
    http://sprunge.us/ObWY
    And here is the /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
    http://bpaste.net/show/209549/
I can't imagine any other log file that might help figure out what happened, let me know if there's anything else.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Edit: I stopped gdm, created a ~/.xinitrc and could successfully start Gnome with startx. The problem remains with GDM.
Edit: The last update solved my problem: http://sprunge.us/RKWA

I'm not sure my issue is really the same one, but am hoping for some guidance here if possible.  Trying to start GDM gives me the same error message/screen.  After tdm fails I can switch to a console,
    sudo systemctl stop gdm.service
    then
    sudo systemctl start lightdm.service
and lightdm starts fine.  However, trying to log in to gnome-session gives me the very same error as I had with GDM.  I can log into XFCE just fine.  Attempting to start gnome-ession via startx also gives me the error screen.  Does anyone know how I can diagnose the problem?  Thanks,
    Matt

  • Won't start properly because of too much stuff on desktop - how do I delete stuff if it won't start up now?

I was trying to move photos to an external hard drive because my startup disk was full and I accidentally dropped them onto the desktop. Now my computer won't start properly because of all the stuff on the desktop and I don't know how I can fix that?

Start up in safe mode. Hold the Shift key while your Mac is starting and check that you can start up in safe mode. Then, choose all the items you want to transfer in Desktop by pressing Command and A keys, and move them to the external drive.
If you have any file in Desktop that you don't want to transfer, simply click it while pressing the Command key

Macbook Pro won't start properly... keeps restarting without chime!
Late 2007 Macbook pro.  OS upgrade worked great for me.
I have had this problem on and off for a month or so.  I simply cannot figure out what the issue is.  I have tried poerup with and without AC power and with/without battery installed.
Starting in Safe mode does not help.
Trying to start with a disk does not help.
It sort of seems like it might be an internal power issue or GPU issue.
It also feels sort of like a software compatibility issue since my Macbook Pro gets reallly slugish for no apparent reason sometimes and IU have to restart.
I have three different anti-virus programs so I doubt it is a virus issue.
I noticed all this start after I did a Mountain Lion upgrade and then tried to start up VMware Fusion.  Fusion seemed to just bog down the computer horribly but did not cause a system crash.
I need to edit an important sequence on Final Cut Pro and don't want it to freeze me out!
Anyone who has had this problem and resolved it please let me know
    God bless

If it doesnt chine it doesn't mean much, the mute could be on or you installed a anti-chime software.

  • [NOT SOLVED] Gnome will not start

I'm editing this original message by way of summing up so that anyone coming here with a similar problem will know what to expect if they read further:
I believe the reason Gnome would not start on the machine in question was that it made too many demands on the available hardware (see desm0te's comments below).
For this reason I decided to switch to LXDE as Desktop Environment which works well on the restricted hardware. I did not investigate the Gnome related problem any further.
    The original message follows:
After a successful installation of the basic command-line Arch according to the Beginner's Guide, I went on to install Gnome according to instructions in the Wiki.
I Did not want Gnome to start automatically but only when I type in the command startx.
This it does, but all I get is the nice blue "curtain" background - no black bar at top of screen with Actions, date , name etc...
    and no cursor.
One funny thing was - this afternoon while I was concentrating on another machine - the black bar suddenly appeared (apparently for no reason) showing the date and my name but with the X cursor
from the X11 environment. However as soon as I moved this cursor to the bar and clicked, both dursor and bar disappeared never to return .
I decided to redirect the stderr of startx to a file in the hope that it would give a clue as to what was wrong.

    desm0tes:
To take your points one by one:
    1. I am now quite happy with LXDE too. The problems I mentioned last night seem to have gone (???!!!) and I can just start LXDE from my user account. Maybe later, I'll realize what I was doing wrong or rather what I did to make it work... . Now I just type:
    startx
    having put:
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
    in .xinitrc.
    2. Thanks for the tip about yaourt. I shall try that sooner or later.
    3. Well as I said - I don't understand what I was doing wrong -  which makes me feel a bit stupid and is rather annoying but looking on the bright side it's fine to be able to start-up, have a legible screen and logout successfully - which I couln't do before. I now have to figure out how to expand the contents of LXDE a bit but that's the fun of it!
LXDE starts up nicely with minimal possibilties but I can change look & feel and customize the panel settings.
    "Menu" contains:
        Accessories:
            File Manager
            Image Viewer
            LXTerminal
            Leafpad
            Xarchiver
        Internet:
            Avahi SSH Server Browser
            Avahi VNC Server Browser
        Office:
            ePDFViewer
        System Tools:
            Avahi Zerconf Browser
            Task Manager
        Preferences:
            Customize Look and Feel
            Monitor Settings
            OPenbox Configuration Maanger
            Preferred Applications
        Run
        Logout
All of these start up OK and work, on cursory examination, except the Avahi Browsers which I don't understand and which appear to do nothing as no window appears on screen.
    4. I'm not quite sure I can yet see the use of a login manager such as SLiM, since I seem to get on quite nicely without it but since I've heard it mentioned a lot I'm sure I'm just missing the point.

The GTK errors surely won't start it from running, as other GTK apps display that but they still work too. Seems something is going wrong with mowgli, which I have reinstalled.

It seems to display that error every time I click the "Show on disk" button on the screenshot manager.
    Something is very broken.

Well changing back to my normal theme after starting audacious works. So that's a plus. I still don't get how it affected steam.
Or reinstalling it worked, because now Audacious is starting fine with my normal theme. This is really strange.
Okay I figured out why the errors were showing up in steam. For some reason, steam tries to open audacious as my file manager instead of nemo.

  • [solved] KDEmod4 won't start

    Hey everyone!
I was just installing Arch on my Desktop few moments ago and decided to give Kdemod4 a try,
but it simply won't start up showing me this error: (in a xtermlike environment)
Could not start kstartupconfig4. Check your installation.
Wondering how to solve this problem...?
So far concerning the installation everything worked quite fine...XServer works with xterm and hal fam and kdm were added to the Daemons array in rc.conf...
After I get back to the tty I also get these lines:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/Type1, removing from list!
/usr/bin/startkde: line11: /usr/bin/kcheckrunning: File or directory not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line36: /usr/bin/kde4-config: File or directory not found
/usr/bin/startkde: line86: /usr/bin/kstartupconfig4: File or directory not found
But: when I DO have those files, namely kcheckrunnig, kde4-config and kstartupconfig4, in /usr/bin...
So seems like something went wrong there...it's just that I can't figure out what...
Thank for your help in advance!
    Cya

I suggest gamin instead of fam, and /etc/inittab to start kdm/gdm instead of rc.conf
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FAM
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Login_manager
The kdm-thing does not work so far...but I'm workin' at it
    Concerning fam...I'll try that
onna assume you have nvidia since it rejects type1 paths...
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA
basically make sure theres no type1 path or dri stuff as the wiki says.
Nope it's an Ati Radeon HD3850 I got there...
Make sure you read about hotplugging if you havent...
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging
    Got that...
Make sure you installed kdemod correctly...
    http://chakra-project.org/download-kdemod.html
Is installed correctly and working with catalyst - didn't work with xf86-video-radeon(hd)...
Still as you can see there are some warnings in the Xorg logfile I have to work on.
Though kdemod4 now starts up upon an 'startx' I won't mark the thread 'solved' till I got everything working correctly...
Any suggestions upon improvement of my configurations are highly appreciated!
Thanks for your help so far AND in advance!

  • [SOLVED] Apache won't start; missing 4 modules

    Hello,
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but httpd won't start after an update.
First it claims each of these 4 modules are missing:
    LoadModule authz_default_module modules/mod_authz_default.so
    LoadModule authn_default_module modules/mod_authn_default.so
    LoadModule disk_cache_module modules/mod_disk_cache.so
    LoadModule mem_cache_module modules/mod_mem_cache.so
If I comment these in httpd.conf, the error changes to
httpd: Configuration error: No MPM loaded.
    Can anyone please help?
    Thanks!

You might want to do that. that is why pacdiff offers the merge option.
PS: Here is an overview of the changes between 2.2 and 2.4: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/upgrading.html
This solved my problem. Thank you for all your help :-)

    startx at the command line.
I just tried Xorg -reconfigure again, adding the AutoAddDevices = false option - still doesn't work, giving the error about config/hal. Without the option, it just goes back to the terminal with no errors.
Pacman log says the only thing upgraded today (after pacman) was the kernel, nvidia, and kernel-firmware. cdfs conflicted with the new kernel, so I removed it. Then I rebooted, and X stopped working. Downgrading those back again doesn't fix it. I don't get it.
    >>EDIT:
Okay - what does cdfs have to do with Xorg???? This makes no sense. I downgraded the kernel pkgs and nvidia again, and this time installed cdfs, which I forgot to do last time. Now X starts. I don't really get it.
Maybe hal in xfce or some plugin needs to use cdfs for something?? I don't really know - but I'm just glad it's working. I guess I'll file a bug report for cdfs so it can be built to the new kernel and hold off upgrading until it's fixed with 2.6.31. sheesh! too weird.

  • [SOLVED] samba does not start properly again -this time with systemd

Definitely no luck with this one...
So, today I've switched to a pure systemd init system, and noticed that I have this old issue again.
(Link to my old thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=142704)
Samba doesn't start properly again, more precisely smbd is launched but not nmbd, so samba is not working as it should (for example smbtreee lists nothing).
Last time I've solved it by putting samba long before networkmanager in the daemons array, but with systemd I'm a bit confused...
    Anyone has this issue?

Oh, this started happening after putting a MUCH faster cpu and motherboard in the system, so maybe there's a race-condition there?

  • Safari won't start properly - update related??

Suddenly , when I open Safari, it doesn't start properly - I just get the spinning wheel icon and I cannot browse websites. ( Luckily, I have Chrome which is working.
I don't know if it was related the recent Delta os update so I downloaded the 'Combo' update and applied it but still Safari won't work.
I don't fancy the re-installation of Lion just to get Safari working but if there's something less drastic, perhaps someone can suggest something.
    Thx in advance.
    -d-

That's not good news.  Creating a new user account should be a trivial exercise, unless there is something wrong with your system. The fact that Chrome is working doesn't reassure me... it could be a system problem that doesn't affect Chrome because it isn't deeply embedded into the system.
    I suggest two steps:
    1) Boot into your recovery partion by holding COMMAND-R when you reboot your computer.  Then open disk utility and do a verify disk on your main partition.
    If that is ok:
    2) If you have a good quality internet connection, it could be worth downloading the 10.7.3 Install Mac OS X app from the Mac App Store and reinstalling (after making an appropriate backup of course).  If all goes well, your data and user accounts will be preserved, but it will work better.
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • [Solved] QJackCtl won't start in with real time.

    Hey all,
I'm having a problem with QJackCtl, I got my version from Extra. The problem is that for some reason Jack won't start in real time mode using QJackCtl. Real Time is checked and marked under the set-up tab, but that little piece of info doesn't seem to make it to jackd. If I start Jack through CLI it works with real time, but not from the GUI.
I figured this out by starting JACK from the command line and then starting QJack. When I would do that it would be running in real time just without the rest of my settings (buffer, periods, sampling rate, etc).  So in my head there's an issue with QJackCtl. I've tried to find a solution, but I can't seem to find one. This isn't the first time I've set JACK up on a system, but this is the first time I've had this problem.
The rest of the system is set up and ready to go. Rt Kernel, limits.conf and all other tuning is done.
Is there something I missed when setting this piece of software up? Any ideas?
    Solved Edit:
Okay, so right after I posted this I got a crazy idea. When you enter setup in qjackctl on the first page there's a box for server path. The path defaults to "jackd". On that line I added "--realtime", so it looked like a basic CLI start-up of JACK and now it works!
So, if anyone else has this problem go to the Setup tab, in the setup window on the line that says Server Path it should look like this:
    jackd --realtime
It worked for me and I hope it helps somebody else out.

Which volume? Assuming you're on the most common usecase (single hw audio device) then whatever command line you use (amixer for example) it'll work fine, it'll control the volume of the device rather than the pulseaudio plugin (so other playing apps get affected as well, which is probably what you want). The 'global' volume so to speak.
For multiple hw audio devices it gets tricky though.

  • [SOLVED] - X won't start - Missing modules??

    Hello all, thanks for looking.
I have installed from the Arch from the latest media, and followed the Begginers Guide.
I have installed to a partition on my hard disk, one of many, and installed Grub and the mbr.
The system boots fine. ALSA works, Xorg is installed, and pacman -Syu says "nothing to do"
It all seems fine except... X won't start.
I type startx and get the following errors in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file :

It appears that some modules are missing, and indeed none of those mentioned in the errors are there if I do lsmod.
But that is about the limit of my understanding.
Can anyone tell me how to add the modules if they aren't even on the machine at all.
Pacman doesn't find them. For example pacman -S glx gives package not found.
Any ideas or pointers much appreciated.

    I Can't Believe It
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I swear I checked that 6 hours ago when I first tried startx.
    OH
    MY
    GOD
Just give me a moment to calm down..........
OK. Thank you. You are completely and joyously right.
It would seem that I had neglected to install the video driver.
    Thanks for that.

  • [SOLVED]amdcccle won't start

Hi all, before I explain my problem, I have spent the last 6 hours searching google and these forums for the answer, so I apologize if I have missed the solution somewhere.
Its 1:38pm here in Australia, and since I woke up today I have been trying to install the drivers for my amd 6950 2gb card.
I "finished" my first ever arch linux install last night, and installed the catalyst and catalyst-utils packages from the unnofficial repositories as I thought they were the newest. They seem to have worked, I am now in xfce4 wm(not as my environment), and everything is working great. However, because my monitor uses hdmi, whenever I do a fresh install of drivers the screen is scaled down by 15%, as this is for some reason a default in the driver. I usually just start amdcccle as root and fix it, but amdcccle won't start.
tl;dr, amdccle won't start either through terminal or started through xfce app menu. Do I need to reinstall all my drivers or just install the amdccle package. sudo pacman -S amdcccle says "cannot find package".
I am loving the speed of arch linux so far, not having 100+ apps that I don't use is nice.
    EDIT: sorry, forgot the error:
amdcccle: error while loading shared libraries: libQtGui.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    Edit2: Wow, I am tired. I just realized I hadn't installed Qt.
If an admin/mod wants to delete this thread then go for it, otherwise Ill i leave the solution to the problem here for other new users like myself.
    To fix just run
    pacman -S qt

I followed wiki for uninstall catalyst, reboot, then clean install of catalyst, reboot, it's the same.
But I've found a way to make it work : disable lxdm and reboot.
Then I remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb at each boot, before running startx. Then I'm able to open amdcccle, check configuration, fglrxinfo gives :
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ fglrxinfo
    display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 8650G
OpenGL version string: 4.3.12614 Compatibility Profile Context 13.25.18
If I reboot again, the problem appears again, then I kill X, remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb again and it works.
I'm going to see if the problem is the same with razor-qt.
