[SOLVED] Grub freeze after Catalyst install

Hello guys,
I tried to switch from free to proprietary driver (Catalyst) but, despite I set the option nomodeset in the grub, the shell is frozen and I can't access anymore to my system.
How can I install again the free driver and be again operative?
Thanks.

Sorry If I answer now.
And yes, I run the command
sudo aticonfig --initial
and installed the correct version of Catalyst, not the legacy because I have an ATI Radeon 5650.
I chrooted, removed the Catalyst, installed again the open source driver but nothing, the process is blocked after some seconds I select the GRUB voice and starts to charge the modules.
How can I ripristine again the previous configuration?
I am lost now.
One thing more.
I noticed that, despite I removed Catalyst, when I run
atinconfig
still works, it is not saying that is not in the system anymore.
And this is strange.
Update:
as you requested, I try to explaine better what I exactly did.
I start from a system with the open source driver (xf86-video-ati). Yesterday I decided to switch to the proprietary for gaming reasons.
Then I followed the wiki:
I added the repository of Vi0l0, updated pacman and then:
sudo pacman -S catalyst-hook catalyst-utils catalyst-libgl opencl-catalyst lib32-catalyst-utils lib32-catalyst-libgl lib32-opencl-catalyst
The installation seemed to go correctly but maybe an error could have come here, I am not sure.
The I run:
aticonfig --initial
blacklisted radeon editing the file
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
adding the line
blaclklist fglrx
and I checked into the directory /etc/modules-load.d/, there it was a file called aticonfig with a single line containing fglrx .
I rebooted my system, adding the option nomodeset in the linux line of my crug configuration and since then it froze.
The system starts to load but after few processes the cursors stops to blink and then it is blocked.
I remember that it happens after it is loading some video driver regarding screen backlight.
I also noticed that when I chroot and then start an X session, it is unable to start it, so there is an error in the video driver.
Now my target should be to ripristine the previous open driver.
Then I removed Catalyst but still aticonfig is working.
What shall I do?
PS.
Going back from work, later today, I will post my xorg.config file.

  • [solved] makepkg freeze after installing dependencies

If I try to create a package from the AUR
    makepkg -sfi package-name
seems to freeze after installing the dependencies. It just stops after installing the last dependency and freezes with 65% CPU-Usage.
If I quit makepkg after freeze and run it again, building the package works so the dependencies get correctly installed.
    Note to AUR-Helpers:
    Yaourt -> works
    Packer -> works
    pacaur -> doesn't work
Any Idea what could cause this Problem and how to fix it?
    Last edited by mak42 (2014-09-05 20:45:42)

Soooo I've found the guilty after digging through the source of "makepkg"
    source /etc/profile &>/dev/null
causes the problem, if I run this command it freezes, Ctrl+C will kill the whole terminal.
So now I know the source of the Problem, still trying to figure out why this happens...
EDIT: Found it I'm using tdm as login-manager, to start it I've put a script into /etc/profile.d/ and this Script gave back an Error "Invalid TTY".
If you source /etc/profile it can't complete due to this Error.
So it was completely my fault
Thank's for your help, now I have to find another way of starting TDM
    EDIT2:
just put /usr/bin/tdm into ~/.bash_profile and tdm works fine.
Actually this is already in the wiki, don't know why I didn't do that in the first place

  • [SOLVED] System freeze after upgrade linux-3.12.9-2 to linux-3.13.4-1

After upgrading from kernel 3.12.9 to 3.13.4 (booth x86_64 architecture) i detected system freeze after round about 0.5s of the login screen about 80% of the time.
So i first thought it coulbe be the the ati driver and uninstalled that via livecd/chroot.
But the same thing happens in comand line only mode.
Afterwards i setup at ssh server to get into the maschine if it is still running, but is was also not responding to that.
Downgrading to 3.12.9 solved the issue. In journalctl i could not find any usefull information.

  • Any one's computer freezing after Lion install?

I have an iMac i7 with 8GB RAM.  My machine is not even 2 years old.  I have never had problems with it freezing up on me before, but after I installed Lion, my computer will at random shut down on me.  I get the gray screen that slides down from the top telling me I need to shut down my computer manually.
Is anyone else getting this problem too?

I finally made the leap from PC to Apple and last week bought a new I-Mac 27" 2.7QC and downloaded Lion on to it yesterday (they offered it for free as the machine is so new.)
I know very little about Macs but it is now reguarly freezing on me - in fact i have no idea how to get out of the current screen so have come to my sony laptop to post this.
    I have tried command-alt-backspace; command-esc; command-q
What else should I be trying?  There is a spinning coloured disc and I can move the mouse around but nothing responds.
This was triggered when i tried to open a you-tube video to undersatnd what Twitter for mac is....
I have also had problems posting to Wordpress and Twitter today - with the posts not going through...and so having to come to my laptop!  Madness!
So far I am disappointed - this is my first mac - but I am hoping this is early teething problems.
If all else fails, is it best that I turn the mac off by pressing the button/disc on the back of the screen (does that work?) or should I leave it and wait until the morning to speak to someone?  And / or is there a 24-hour help line I can call.... I've only had the machine for a week!
Many thanks if anyone can help....

In my case, monitor freezes too.
And I have only one PC, so i can't try ssh.
I logged into runlevel3 and try
    sudo pm-suspend
and it works fine. So it seems this trouble caused only in runlevel5.
I also tried following command in runlevel5
    # echo freezer > /sys/power/pm_test
    # echo mem > /sys/power/state
    # echo devices > /sys/power/pm_test
    # echo mem > /sys/power/state
    # echo platform > /sys/power/pm_test
    # echo mem > /sys/power/state
    # echo processors > /sys/power/pm_test
    # echo mem > /sys/power/state
    # echo core > /sys/power/pm_test
    # echo mem > /sys/power/state
Everything works fine but sudo pm-suspend failed.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome won't boot up after catalyst install

    Hello all,
I'm new to Arch, and seem to have been thrown into the deep end here, as it were. I installed the catalyst drivers for my Radeon HD8xxx card in my laptop to try and get some better video performance, and, through the help of the extraordinarily informative wiki, was able to do so. However when it boots now, it stays on the first screen with all the OK's (I removed quiet from my boot options in grub). I have to switch to tty2 (Alt+F2) and log in to start using it. Here's the kicker though: from there I can run startx and work just fine in x with the catalyst drivers. I don't get that, but I'm hoping someone else might. I apologize in advance if this is noobish mistake, but appreciate any pointers I can get.
    Here's some relevant technical info:

The short answer here is this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1404629 ... some weird incompatibility w/ the catalyst drivers w/ latest gnome... had I really been paying attention to the wiki, I'd have known this. Oh well, it's worth the extra performance to me to use startx. Thanks all for watching. Nothing more to see here.

  • Boot freezes after clean install

I installed arch on my new desktop pc a couple of days. It was working fine until I tried to install fglxr. I run into a lot of problems, so I decided to make a new install.
After rebooting for the first time, my new system was working fine, after installing linux-pf and xorg-server and some other packages, I rebooted to make sure to install the catalyst drivers on the new kernel, but I found it freezes with no error after it says:
    Loading linux image...
    Loading intird image...
I've removed quiet kernel parameter and I've tried with debug and verbose, but I don't get any error.
I also (of course) tried to boot in to the "core" kernel, but the problem it's the same.
I've been trying for hours to do all sort of stuff, rebuilding the images, checking the paths to the kernel it's fine, ecc.
I'm really lost, because now my system has only the base stuff and I haven't changed any files :(

Ok, I've been trying to debug this and the behaviour is REALLY weird, I've found that if I load the system directly from grub (I'm using uefi), it's get stuck with no errors after:
    Loading Linux pf kernel ...
    Loading initial ramdisk ...
BUT, if I run refind first, and then I load grub; the system starts. I would have think it's some kind of grub2 bug, but I don't understand how it could work after loading refind. Any clues?

  • [SOLVED] GRUB crashed after pacman -Su

    Hello all,
I did a system update about 2 hours ago, I did pacman -Syy and pacman -Su. Every thing looked normal.
Restarted and system crashes right in GRB, it doesn't even shows the menu or error message, it just fills the screen with "GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB".
I checked the disk, partition tables are ok, and the whol HD looks ok, no errors at all (checked with system rescue cd, a gentoo live cd).
I also mounted the boot partition, all files seem to be ok, grub menu, etc..
/grub/menu.lst was modified today, but looks ok.
Any Idea of what could happen?
    How to solve it?
Should I try to replace grub?

    Thank you hcjl and demian.
    Problem solved after GRUB re-install.
Here is the procedure (resume from hcjl links) I made, just in case someone else needs it:
1- Download the arch iso and write it to cd or dvd
2- Run the cd, login as root
3- Mount arch and boot partitions:
-Find boot and arch partitions with
    fdisk -l
Create a directory where you would like to mount the arch partition, then mount it:
    mkdir /mnt/arch
    mount /dev/<device-or-partition-name> /mnt/arch
    4- Changing Root:
    cd /mnt/arch
    mount -t proc proc proc/
    mount -t sysfs sys sys/
    mount -o bind /dev dev/
    Mount the boot partition:
    mount /dev/<device-or-partition-name> boot/
    And change root:
    chroot . /bin/bash
5- Install GRUB on hd0 (first hard drive):
    # grub
    grub> setup (hd0)
    6- Exit all, reboot
That fixed my problem, and preserved my original GRUB menu (I did a backup of broken GRUB, but it was nor necesary)
Thank you all for your help.

  • [SOLVED] Getting freezes after using dwm for some time and exiting it

Hello, I have an Asus Ux51, with a fresh (less than a month) arch installation. If I recall correctly I had a couple of freezes in other occasions but I don't remember much about those so I rather focus on the only freeze I can more or less reproduce and I've been having lately. After using dwm for some time with a couple of programs opened (rTorrent, browser, and some terminals for instance), if I close dwm or just press the power button to shut down, it starts closing everything and either stays with a black screen, or hangs while X prints the log information. It's not always though, for example, if I just boot it, open dwm and close it without giving it much use it usually closes fine.
Tried googling a bit to see the usual ways to troubleshoot this but didn't get really far.

Found this recent thread in the forums, I'll give REISUB a try late, but the times it freezed I remember trying to blindly reboot it, or switching off virtual console and couldn't.
In case it's of any use, this is my # uname -a
    Linux arch 3.10.3-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 26 11:26:59 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Could it have something to do with the nvidia optimus setup that this laptop has? When installing arch I found out that there was no support yet for it so I'm just using the intel drivers (following what the arch wiki said).
Any ideas or advice to point me in the right direction would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't start st in my .xinitrc. I launch it from dmenu and usually everything is fine. If I launch it from dwm's internal command using Alt-Shf-Return, X freezes 100% of the time. A workaround was suggested by st's main developer to call st like this:
    static const char *termcmd[] = { "/bin/sh", "-c", "st", NULL };
but it didn't work for me.
Very rarely X will freeze anyway. I haven't been able to pin it down. When X fails, my journal returns this:

  • [SOLVED] X freezes after "exit"; can't kill X nor use the keyboard

    Hi!
I've got a problem with my X server on my fresh installed Arch system. I followed the "Beginner's Guide" and edited the .xinitrd to start xterm for testing. This works well, but unfortunately X seems to freeze when I want go back to the shell via "exit" or when I want to change to another virtual console (Ctrl-Alt F1).
When this happens, my screens go black and my keyboard doesn't work anymore, however I can log in via SSH. I can't kill X and the fourth core of my cpu is at 100%.
This happens when I use a auto-configured xorg.conf from nvidia-xconfig (http://paste.pocoo.org/show/224004/) or when I use my "old" configuration from Ubuntu 9.10 (http://paste.pocoo.org/show/224005/). When I don't use the xorg.conf file at all, then X wont even start.
    I've got a Xorg.0.log from the test with the nvidia-xconfig generated xorg.conf: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/224002/ I can't see what's wrong here.
    Thanks for your help!

Ok, I had started to write that the nvidia-beta driver didn't changed anything, but after a reboot it seems to work.
So, with the nvidia-beta driver from the AUR and the following x.org configuration it works:

  • [SOLVED] No sound after fresh install

    Hi
I am having a little bit of a problem that I couldn't solve myself. My sound is not working after a fresh installation of Arch. Everything else is fine but sound is not working. My "user" is in "audio" group, I tried some solution nothing smart just trying to reinstall or try to delete pulseaudio or alsa, only to find they are dependant on something. I have a Gnome 3.12. Also I am not an expert (obviously) ,but some things are still unclear to me about linux and this is not my first expiriance with Arch.
This is what I belive you need from harware list:
    Motherboard: Asus P5Q PRO
    Video Card: Ati Radeon 4850HD
Audio: Realtek ALC1200, 8-channel High Definition Audio CODEC (this is built in)
So enough of my rambling here are the data I think you may need for actually helping me:
This is the version I am using
    pacman -Q | grep alsa

No, I checked that in the beggining, however the thing that bothers me is there is, in gnome settings; sound; there is no intel hd or radeonhd choises just "Digital Output" (S/PDIF) -Built-in-Audio". And I can't seem to add new one or anything else. Aslo in the same menu sound; I cannot choose another profile. Just one: Digital Stereo.
I was thinking could the new kernel be guilty? Whenever I installed in the past everything was ok, including the sound. Now there is something that I didn't mention, there were two lines when I started installing Arch yesterday,
    "Posible missing firmware aic94, smsmdtv."
This is not exactly how it was written but I do remeber posible and these two "missing" ones, because I writed them down.
That's it. Anyone has any ideas?

  • [SOLVED] No internet after fresh install on laptop

After working mostly on windows and a little on some linux distributions like Mint and Ubuntu I wanted to move on to Arch Linux after a lot of discussions about it with colleagues and my gf. I managed to install it succesfully on my desktop and everything runs smooth. My laptop didn't went as smooth though. First I had some problems to get it booting, but that problem got solved.
Now... At home I don't seem to be able to connect to the internet with my laptop, while my desktop can connect fine. Both machines are connected with a wire on the same D-LINK router, can give the specs if needed. For both i just use the dynamic IP adress option via dhcpcd.
It might be something simple, and I'm quite the noob, although i want to learn, so I hope someone has a clue what might be going on and how to solve it. I'm writing this topic from my desktop, as I said before, that machine has internet connection without any problem...

glendc wrote:Ok I am available to solve the solution again for a couple of hours. So I still have no internet, and i'm home right now. Earlier today, at work, I installed networkmanager and net-tools. So I have these now too. So any suggestions on where the problem can be? I might not be describing my problem not enough, or forgetting to mention important details, I'm sorry for this, but I'm very new to this, so I don't really know what to tell and what not.
Well....I can tell you what I had to do.
dhcpcd works fine as long as you have an ethernet wire hooked up. My Dell has the Broadcom Wireless card, meaning I had to get the driver from the AUR. Here's how I got it done:
    Install Arch
    (leave the ethernet hooked up)
if you have no internet and the ethernet is hooked up, issue the following command:
    sudo dhcpcd
if you don't have your /etc/sudoers file set up just type
    su
    then enter your password,
    then enter the following command:
    dhcpcd
ok, assuming you have internet withe the ethernet wire, install a browser. Go to the AUR, and get the "b43-firmware" download the tarbell, uncompress it, then install it using makepkg. Check the Wiki if you're not sure how to do it. Once it's installed, issue the following command:
    sudo modprobe b43
again, if you don't have sudoers set up, you'll have to execute su, then password.
    ok...now you have wireless.
now you have two choices to get it working,
execute the following command to test it:
    wifi-menu
you can sign on from there
to sign on at boot, you'll need network manager. I see you've already installed network manager, so you just need to install the panel applet unless you're running gnome or kde (these come with it out of the box)
    issue the following three commands:
    sudo systemctl disable dhcpcd.service
    sudo systemctl stop dhcpcd.service
    sudo systemctl enable NetworkManager.service
these commands are case-specific, so make sure you capitalize the N, and M.
reboot, then you should have wifi show up from the panel applet.
if not, let me know....We'll dig a little deeper.
at any rate, whether you have a Broadcom card or not, you have to stop the dhcpcd service and start the NetworkManager service to give control to the panel applet.

  • [Solved]System freeze after reboot after upgrade

    Hi,
At first I encountered the problem that "loading udev uevents" took forever, so I loaded a live cd and upgraded everything. Since then, my computer does boot and doesn't hang at loading udev uevents, but it now freezes when it shows a login field after booting. The keyboard doesn't do anything, and the screen just keeps frozen like a popsicle. I wanted to downgrade my nvidia and kernel version, but when I try to downgrade my nvidia version it states that My kernel version is too high, and when I try to downgrade that, My nvidia version is too high, seemed like an impossible loop to me.
Ow, and between booting I can see a lot of errors starting daemons and mounting the systems as well, but as I can't boot it's quiet hard to look them up (if I knew where to look, but I don't because I'm kind of a newbie) and post them here.
I've been thinking about installing arch all over again, but it seems to mee that I then have to lose all the installed programs, daemons and configurations which took me over weeks to create and make work, so any other option would be very helpfull.
    Tom

    rc.conf :
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs @crond hal slim fam cups @sshd @mpd @alsa @samba mysqld httpd @transmissiond @xinetd)
I use an nvidia card, I boot to x using slim
I currently can boot again normally, loging and use the command prompt (thank god), also the daemons are all running, except for slim. When I start slim in the terminal I get the error:
slim: Stale lockfile found, removing it
Somehow I managed to fix this by removing and reïnstalling the kernel, but slim isn't running yet.

  • Desktop Freeze after LEopard install

After installing Leopard my OS will not start normally. First start will almost always freeze when the desktop arrives on screen. The top finder menu shows but no desktop icons. The curser will sometimes turn to the color wheel but nothing happens. I can even click on item on the dashboard and hear the hard drive work but nothing on the screen. I do a hard reboot with the power and the second time it will start normally. If i do it again a day later it will do the same until the second restart.
Any thoughts, anyone with the same issue, what could it be, very dissapointing!!

Hey Boom-Stick, yeah, I got the same problems, almost. Only my PBG4 won't show the desktop at all, everything else is running though, like photoshop or any other app. I'm fighting my way through this, but I didn't find the right solution yet. One that helped a bit was the following:
    go here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1223396&tstart=0
and follow the steps. Create a new Admin, then all of the sudden the desktop/finder works perfectly. Only when you go back to the old username, it won't work again, that's the part I haven't figured out yet... right now I'm repairing my permissions, hoping this will help. But I dunno yet.
    Cheers, Ben

This is all the info that i get.
If i remember right, this was shown when arch was booting up normally too, but it ussualy just hanged for a second or two at it. I've tried leaving it for almost half an hour now, and it didnt budge.
And it doesnt actually freeze, since there is a blinking " | " after the last line (no input is being accepted though)
This might be something stupidly simple, but im completely new to Arch (and linux in general)
I do have a live cd though, so if there's any conf that you think would help, i can get it.
