[SOLVED] GRUB to GRUB2

When migrating to GRUB2, should GRUB be removed using pacman, or does installing GRUB2 actually overwrite all of the older GRUB files?
I didn't see it mentioned in the wiki, or in any other posts about GRUB2, but I see no point in having any leftovers from the older version remaining on the drive if they aren't needed.
Thanks.

I can't answer that question directly, but my guess is that they're still there as a fall back. It took me a bunch of failed tries to get my grub2 config working, and all I needed to do to boot into the system was move menu.lst.pacsave back to menu.lst. If you do that, you're booting into grub and not grub2.
I wonder why it does something with your old menu.lst file. Did you install grub2 with grub-install after replacing grub on your machine?

    from grub's web site:
13 : Invalid or unsupported executable format
This error is returned if the kernel image being loaded is not recognized as Multiboot or one of the supported native formats (Linux zImage or bzImage, FreeBSD, or NetBSD).
I think your vmlinuz26 file is wrong in some ways, or grub can't read ext4 correctly (I have done a fresh install with ext4, but I have made a separate partition for /boot in ext2)

  • [Solved] Grub not displaying menu, error messages from grub-mkconfig

    Hi I'm new
I have (or rather, am trying to setup) a dual boot with Windows 8.1 and Arch, with each OS on separate SSDs.
Windows 8.1 already installed, Arch installation (seems to have) has gone smoothly. However, when I remove the installation usb, and try to boot, I get a command line prompt:
    grub >_
...instead of a menu. I tried typing 'boot', but got 'you need to load the kernel first'. So I cannot access my arch installation without chrooting (or knowing how to compile the kernel in the command line, which I could not find after a lot of searching)
I followed the documentation in the Beginner's Guide and the GRUB page for installing and configuring GRUB. This is UEFI (grub2), not BIOS (grub legacy).
    pacman -S grub efibootmgr
    grub-install --target=x86S64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
No error messages. I also installed os-prober for kicks. When I went to generate the config file (as recommended for beginners), I got a torrent of what I interpreted to be error messages, not just copacetic output:
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    resulted in:
click this link for error messages
(sorry about the image. I had to shutdown and reboot into my windows partition, since I still can't arch it up. If any/all of you have a better way to reproduce output and feel it pertinent, I'm all ears)
so upon exiting chroot and rebooting, grub boots up to the above effect; no menu is displayed. And I am sad panda.
    Background Information:
    Partition scheme:
/dev/sda1 - BIOS boot partition (I didn't read carefully, lol)
/dev/sda2 - EFI System Partition - mounted to /mnt/boot when chrooting in
/dev/sda3 - Root partition - mounted to /mnt/ when chrooting in
/dev/sda4 - Home partition - mounted to /mnt/home when chrooting in
The installation and configuration described above was done in chroot with the above partition scheme
I originally had issues booting into UEFI mode with the arch iso (written to a usb stick for the initial install). The boot would hang at 'triggering uevents'. I ultimately fixed this by pressing 'e' in the bootloader menu (also grub, I believe) and prepended
    linux /boot/vmlinux-linux root=UUID=978e3e81-8048-4ae1-8a06-aa727458e8ff nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0
It then (successfully triggered uevents? and) booted normally

I realized that since I was not using EFISTUB, I could not mount the ESP to /boot; it had to be /boot/efi. A quick remount-reinstall of grub, then rerunning grub-mkconfig solved the issue.
Also, regarding WonderWoofy's suggestion: I learned by trying gummiboot that for whatever reason the kernel hadn't compiled properly when I ran
    pacstrap /mnt base base-devel
    Fixed via
    pacman -S linux
    Thanks for your help, everybody!

  • [SOLVED] Grub Problems Can boot Arch w/ grub edits only

I had 3 Linux OS's installed on this computer, Arch and 2 versions of Ubuntu on one hard drive.
The MBR belonged to Ubuntu, using grub2. I decided to get rid of the older Ubuntu (sda8 and 9) and add it's HDD space to my Arch home (sda12). Used the current Gparted live to modify the partitions and all went well, but of course, the numbers changed getting rid of 2 partitions.
No boot upon restart so I decided to get Arch's grub back to the MBR with the new partition numbering scheme.
Using a live CD, I used the grub shell, find /boot/grub/stage1.....etc, etc. and after a bit of fumbling, grub indicated success in the shell. When I was through though, a reboot was not successful, although the current stable grub was now written to the MBR.  I edited the lines using grub edit option, and got Arch to boot, and figured out the correct partition numbers. Next I edited the menu.lst to reflect the new sda numbers.
Now rebooting results in a long delay when grub should be on the screen, and the numbers on the Arch entries reflect the old numbers still!! I double checked thinking I forgot to save the edits to the menu.lst file, but they are correct. I can boot Arch, but have to edit the lines each time.
The current partitions are as follows. I edited the terminal output to show details.
    [jeff@Arch2009p2 ~]$ sudo fdisk -l
    Password:
    Disk /dev/sda: 750.2 GB, 750156374016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 91201 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0x000383e7
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 91201 732572001 5 Extended
    /dev/sda5 1 255 2048224+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sda6 (ubuntu /) 256 1471 9767488+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda7 (ubuntu /home) 1472 22321 167477593+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda8 (arch boot) 22322 22325 32098+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda9 (arch /) 22326 23627 10458283+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda10 (arch /home) 23628 91201 542788123+ 83 Linux
I have a few questions regarding a separate boot partition for Arch.
Should the grub> root (hd0.0) command be directed to the root or boot partition.
My handy printed emergency guide says: Set grubs root device to the partition containing the boot directory.
OK.....Writing it out now, it seems clear, so I'll try reinstalling grub from a live CD.
Why does grub have incorrect partition numbers even though the menu.lst is correct?
There are only 2 OS's on this box now, and one contains grub2.
Is current grub able to interact with grub 2 if I screwed something up on the install?

    OK
I managed to fix the problem of grub not reading/using the menu.lst file. Not sure WTF it was reading and where that file was located!
The problem seems to have been the most insignificant detail.
When using the grub terminal, I did not execute the quit command when I was through. I just closed the terminal and rebooted.
After repeating the following code via live CD a few times:
    $ sudo grub
    grub> find /grub/stage1
    grub> root (hd0,7)
    grub> setup (hd0)
Grub still didn't read the current menu.lst.
This morning I got things to work correctly and grub to read the current menu.lst by adding a quit command and returning to the linux shell prior to rebooting.
    I used the following commands:
    $ sudo grub
    grub> find /grub/stage1
    grub> root (hd0,7)
    grub> setup (hd0)
    grub> quit

  • [Solved][GRUB/ATI] Video problem

    Hi all.
    I have a Radeon HD 6670 (Turks XT/r600)
When I boot arch linux live from USB everythink works ok.
But after install I have no video.
System boots > shows grub > shows systemd things > screen blinks and all black.
After some self research, I found "gfxpayload=keep" on grub parameters and change it to "gfxpayload=disable", then F10 and everything works great (video/X/VDPAU/3D...)
Why it hapens and how can I permanently set this disable on grub?
    [EDIT]
Some PC, some instalation, with on board HD4250 (RS880G) video works with gfxpayload=$ANYTHING
    [EDIT 2]
You can change gfxpayload on /etc/default/grub

After which you run '# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' and the changes are saved.

  • [SOLVED]Grub fails to open dm-crypt+LUKS volume on boot(Waiting 10s..)

I know there are quite a few solved posts like these but it's usually because of "mkinitcpio -p linux" not being regenerated.
My problem is after boot Grub says:
    running hook [udev]
    running hook [encrypt]
Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/d1d0825c-25d1-4cbe-811f-725d9ef8d034>...

Here are all the files that I think would be needed for this:

    Things I tried:
Replace this line in grub.cfg with
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=d1d0825c-25d1-4cbe-811f-725d9ef8d034 rw cryptdevice=UUID=d1d0825c-25d1-4cbe-811f-725d9ef8d034:cryptroot quiet
Do mkinitcpio -p linux but the hook ecrypt is there, so I assume it's a grub issue.
    In
    /etc/default/grub
replace GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda6:cryptroot" with actual UUID, etc.
    Grub config was made with
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    Grub was installed with
    grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda

  • [SOLVED] fbsplash and grub2

Hi, I wanted to give myself a splashscreen but the Fbsplash wiki only shows how to do this with grub legacy, and currently my computers booting is controlled by grub2 from Ubuntu, as it insisted on it. So I was wondering if theres a way to circumvent this, I don't want to go and do something that might mean I can't boot at all. I've heard of chainloading, which links from the bootloader on the MBR to other distro or partition specific bootloaders, but I've only really seen this with the example of Windows, and grub2 and Ubuntu sort it out for the user, meaning nothing is learned. Could anybody give me some advice?
    Cheers,
    Ben.

Ok thanks, I've pacman'd grub2 and used Arch's instead of ubuntu and set my Arch / partition with the boot flag, not that it would make much difference because grub2 is put on the MBR. Although it has acted a bit differently, I now hove the choice of the lts kernel, which I don't think I've been using up to now, I've installed all my modules for kernel26. And It won't audodetect any of the Ubuntu partitions. Although, truth be told, I've been having problems with the ubuntu partitions for quite some time, they seem to think they're called UberStudent, not Ubuntu. I tried putting ubuntu entries in 40-custom but it hasn't worked yet. But I'm going to try and turn autodetection off and use only custom. Or I may just put grub-legacy on.
[EDIT] Got it going - disabled the automatic scripts and just added everything to the 40_custom file and added the kernel line and it works fine. Had a kernel panic the first time I tried but it works now perfectly, must have been a typo.

  • [SOLVED] Grub 2 gives Error: Invalid Signature

    Hello everyone.
I am trying to dual boot Arch and Windows 7. I am boot into Arch with no problem but when I select Windows 7; I am greeted with the 'Error: Invalid Signature' and redirects back to the Grub 2 menu.
I have googled and have tried many times, so I thought I would come to the endless supply of knowledge of the bbs.archlinux forums.
I can boot into Windows when I have it as the first boot drive in the BIOS, so I Windows is fine. It's got to be one simple step I'm missing here.
P.S. I really wasn't sure where to put this post.
I'll go ahead and list some (hopefully) useful information:

Alright everyone I got it working. I will show what I did and mark as solved.
For some reason, that I do not know the answer too, the Window's bootloader was on my extra harddrive /dev/sdb1 as opposed to /dev/sda1, where my Windows partion actually is. I'm not sure what I did to do that or if that is just is just how Windows works.
    my /etc/grub/40_custom:
    #!/bin/sh
    exec tail -n +3 $0
    # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
    # menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
    # the 'exec tail' line above.
    menuentry "Windows 7" {
    insmod ntfs
    set root=(hd0,1)
    search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set BE4CA71B4CA6CD89
    chainloader +1
    I added in the
    insmod ntfs
    and
    search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set BE4CA71B4CA6CD89
so that it would boot from the /dev/sdb1 drive.
I found the UUID by running the command:
    sudo blkid

  • [SOLVED] Grub error 18 - cannot boot to Windows

Earlier today I tried to install Arch 64bit (I had 32bit earlier) with kdemod to test new KDE4.2. However, after installation I could not boot neither Arch nor Windows. Grub appeared, but every single option gave me an error. I can't remember anymore which error it was, but It doesn't matter anymore. I thought I had made a really stupid and basic mistake while installing, I just didn't know what.
I wanted to test KDE4.2 so much so I installed Kubuntu (yeah, this topic is not related to Arch Linux, I hope that somebody can help me though, move this topic to somewhere else if it doesn't belong here ). Installation was fine, booting to Kubuntu was fine (and upgrading to KDE4.2 was fine), but booting to Windows was not. It gave me a following error:
Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS
I googled a bit and found this: http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/GRUB#Error_18 I reinstalled Kubuntu using /dev/sdb1 as /boot and /dev/sdb2 as / (/dev/sdb3 is windows and /dev/sdb4 is my game partition, ntfs). Before this I had /dev/sdb1 as / and /dev/sdb2 as swap (now I have no swap at all, my 4GB RAM should be enough). The only difference was that at first grub gave me error 15 (I fixed it with Kubuntu LiveCD). After that - no difference.
I need Windows for playing. That's why it's very important that I can use it. [SOLVED] In addition, I should say that /dev/sda is a separated hard drive which is encrypted with Truecrypt. (I said this because I think that Kubuntu tried to install grub on (hd0)...) When I tried to mount this hard drive with Kubuntu, it couldn't do it. I wanted to test mounting on Windows to check if it is just Kubuntu's problem. If not, I'm fucked because this hard drive contains VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT files. [/SOLVED]
I really need help, please. If somebody can help me, (s)he is my hero.

  • [SOLVED] GRUB crashed after pacman -Su

    Hello all,
I did a system update about 2 hours ago, I did pacman -Syy and pacman -Su. Every thing looked normal.
Restarted and system crashes right in GRB, it doesn't even shows the menu or error message, it just fills the screen with "GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB".
I checked the disk, partition tables are ok, and the whol HD looks ok, no errors at all (checked with system rescue cd, a gentoo live cd).
I also mounted the boot partition, all files seem to be ok, grub menu, etc..
/grub/menu.lst was modified today, but looks ok.
Any Idea of what could happen?
    How to solve it?
Should I try to replace grub?

    Thank you hcjl and demian.
    Problem solved after GRUB re-install.
Here is the procedure (resume from hcjl links) I made, just in case someone else needs it:
1- Download the arch iso and write it to cd or dvd
2- Run the cd, login as root
3- Mount arch and boot partitions:
-Find boot and arch partitions with
    fdisk -l
Create a directory where you would like to mount the arch partition, then mount it:
    mkdir /mnt/arch
    mount /dev/<device-or-partition-name> /mnt/arch
    4- Changing Root:
    cd /mnt/arch
    mount -t proc proc proc/
    mount -t sysfs sys sys/
    mount -o bind /dev dev/
    Mount the boot partition:
    mount /dev/<device-or-partition-name> boot/
    And change root:
    chroot . /bin/bash
5- Install GRUB on hd0 (first hard drive):
    # grub
    grub> setup (hd0)
    6- Exit all, reboot
That fixed my problem, and preserved my original GRUB menu (I did a backup of broken GRUB, but it was nor necesary)
Thank you all for your help.

  • [SOLVED]Grub-Install can't Find Kernel and/or initrd, mkinitcpio Fails

    Hi all,
I have recently installed Arch on my new build (with UEFI firmware). I successfully set up xorg, alsa/pulseaudio, xfce, etc... things were looking pretty good. Then, I tried to blacklist the pcspkr in order to silence the annoying beep every time I selected "Log Out" inside xfce. I executed
    mkinitcpio -p linux
and was presented with the following errors:
==> Building image from preset: 'default'
    -> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img -S autodetect
==> ERROR: specified kernel image does not exist: `/boot/vmlinuz-linux'
==> Building image from preset: 'fallback'
    -> -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux -c /etc/mkinitcpio.conf -g /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img -S autodetect
==> ERROR: specified kernel image does not exist: `/boot/vmlinuz-linux`
There were no such files anywhere on /boot. I tried doing
    find / -name vmlinuz-linux
and nothing was found. I wasn't quite sure why that was happening, but I tried uninstalling/reinstall grub (grub-common and grub2-efi-x86_64). I installed grub to /boot using
    grub-install --directory=/usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id="Arch Linux" --boot-directory=/boot --recheck --debug
and then generated /boot/grub/grub.cfg. I tried rebuilding the initramfs again but got the same error. I was tired and frustrated so I removed the old grub efi entry with
    efibootmgr -b 0 -B
    and then went to sleep.
I didn't have the chance to turn the computer back on until tonight... I was then presented with a grub2 shell. Since I didn't know where the kernel/initrd were located I tried
    set root=(hd1,gpt1)
    chainloader +1
    but grub told me
    error: invalid EFI file path
So that's about it. It appears that grub-mkconfig is having trouble locating the kernel/initrd so it doesn't make any entries, dropping me right into a shell. I've tried booting up with my installation USB and chrooting in and reinstalling grub again but nothing seems to work. So what I'd like to try to do is just boot up into my system and then modify add the grub boot entries entries I want... but I just can't figure out what's causing all these issues.
Sorry if I mess up any terminology... still learning the ropes here. Thanks for any input.

Probably because you have a separate boot partition (not just the 512 MB "UEFISYS" FAT32 partition), which you forgot to mount (in fstab).
    Post your /etc/fstab.
    Thank you for your reply!
However, I do not have a separate boot partition apart from the "UEFISYS" partition. Here is my fstab:
    # UUID=3ec307aa-0ead-4d33-b292-42bbe783d6ee
    /dev/sda2 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # UUID=B192-6C57
    /dev/sda1 /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
When I first looked at the fstab I saw that both of the entries repeated themselves. This was because I had even tried reformatting /boot so I had to generate a new fstab, but for some reason I used ">> /mnt/etc/fstab" rather than "> ..."
    So I executed
    genfstab /mnt > /mnt/etc/fstab
and reinstalled grub, but still no difference... mkinitcpio fails and I reboot to a grub shell.

  • Grub vs Grub2

Can you explain the difference.  I'm thinking of switching but  I'm scared that I'll mess-up .  Is the risk worth the reward?

MisterAnderson wrote:Stick with grub or syslinux, unless you like 300 configuration files for your bootloader.
People like to repeat that a lot, but it's not really true. You can skip all the crazy auto-configure crap grub2 has and write grub.cfg manually. Which is one file, same as grub1, and this file won't look much different than the menu.lst of grub1.
That said, syslinux all the way for me.

  • [SOLVED] Grub Error "Read or write outside of disk hd0"

Trying to install Arch Linux (as per client request) on an old Seagate Mirra Personal Server. I reflashed the bios to get rid of the Seagate modified ROM and put the standard, stock, VIA bios image on there. Everything boots fine, it boots windows fine. But when I install Arch Linux on the drive and try to boot, it errors out with
    Booting...
    GRUB Loading.
    Welcome to GRUB!
error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'.
    Entering rescue mode...
    grub rescue>
When I ran grub-install and grub-mkconfig during installation neither reported errors or warnings. I'm open to ideas but I need to fix this sooner rather later as this is for a client. A forum thread I found in regards to Ubuntu and grub error 18 said to run:
    apt-get remove linux-server
    apt-get install linux-386
under Ubuntu and then it would boot. I know Arch removed i386 support a few months ago but im finding it hard to believe that the error above is because of an architecture mismatch. Also I didnt think the CPU in this thing was that old. Hardware Info from the arch live cd says
    CPU Vendor: Centaur
    CPU Model: VIA Nehemiah
    1 core, 64k L2 Cache, 32bit
the Mirra is from 2007 or so, so I expected i686 Arch to be just fine for it.
    Ideas???
    EDIT:
    Wikipedia's Article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIA_C3
States: "Additionally, it implemented the cmov instruction, making it a 686-class processor"
So it shouldn't be an issue of i386 vs i686, right?

Good morning to all of You.
Sorry for posting in a [SOLVED] thread but I find the info that I am about to add relevant and I am betting my vital organs that someone else might find it interesting too.
I did an upgrade last night on my Thinkpad 600E. I was not upgrading it for several days (2 weeks tops) as I lost my USB wifi card and had no internet access on this particular machine. So...
As always before upgrade I checked my rss reader for news and sure enough there was a very informative post from Allan (thanks Dude btw.) in there:
    https://www.archlinux.org/news/binaries … ervention/
I did as I was told and upgraded in the indicated way. All was peachy till I rebooted to get new kernel to load. I was met with the mentioned error:
error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'.
but the second part was slightly different.
Error: You need to load kernel first
SO since the error was different why am I posting here? Because even after Googling the whole error message this post was the first to come up in my search results so I am betting others will get here as well.
Solution? After an hour or so of fighting (I tried booting up from the Arch CD and fscking partitions, reinstalling / reconfiguring grub, downgrading grub-bios and grub-common packages and many many other things) I finally rebooted to the Arch cd, chrooted (for all those that do not know what that means I would like to recommend this link as chrooting is explained in it https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … %27_Guide) to the installation and I have reinstalled the linux (kernel) package and redid the image with the:
    mkinitcpio -p linux
and rebooted. Turns out that did the trick. Apparently something went wrong during the kernel upgrade. Possibly due to the changes explained in Allan's article. Reinstalling kernel / recreating image did the trick for me.
So if You are still wondering what am I doing here and why am I replying in this thread - the answer is - 99% search results from Google suggests that this error means incompatibility between bios and the hard drive AND there is nothing really out there that I found helpful in this case. I mean it could not be a bios / hdd incompatibility. This drive has been used in this machine for few years and it was running Arch since November 2012... so this just could not be the case. I am just giving a shout to all those that will get this error that there is another option too.
Kind regards. Thanks for reading. My apologies again for sticking my nose in.
    Andrzej
Edit: Few months later the same error - fix does not work... Trying to figure it out...

  • [SOLVED] Grub problem using fakeraid

    Hi,
    I've been trying to install arch on Raid0 following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _Fake-RAID.
I load dm_mod and install arch using this partition table
    pdc_jhaaaaghi1 (Boot) Primary NTFS (Windows)
    pdc_jhaaaaghi2           Primary NTFS (Windows)
    pdc_jhaaaaghi3           Primary ext2   (/boot)
    pdc_jhaaaaghi5           Logical  ext4   (/)
    pdc_jhaaaaghi6           Logical  ext4   (/home)
    pdc_jhaaaaghi7           Logical  swap
I install dmraid package and on configuration I add dm_mod to MODULES line and dmraid to HOOKS line in mkinitcpio.conf
I start configuring grub (I add (hd0,2) to root lines) and when it fails switch to another tty and run
    # mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
    # mount -t proc none /mnt/proc
    # mount -t sysfs none /mnt/sys
    # chroot /mnt /bin/bash
    # dmsetup mknodes
    # ln -s /dev/mapper/pdc_jhaaaaghip1 /dev/mapper/pdc_jhaaaaaghi1
    # grub --device-map=/dev/null

    grub> geometry (hd0) 121576 255 63
    grub> root (hd0,2)
    grub> setup (hd0)
    grub> quit
On setup it says it's done but when I reboot I get this message instead of grub
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
    Thanks

    Ok, it's solved now.
It wasn't the Gentoo's wiki thing. It was because of bios configuration and not Arch installation. I didn't look at this because windows was booting correctly before installation. But using the boot menu and selection my raid array it showed grub so I looked the boot device priority in bios and put my array first (it was second after usb devices).
