[solved] GTK3: Fonts not rendering smoothly

Here's GTK3 app and GTK2 app side by side:
Fonts are not rendering correctly on any GTK3 app. I use Ubuntu's patched versions of freetype2, fontconfig and cairo from AUR:
freetype2-ubuntu fontconfig-ubuntu cairo-ubuntu
How can I get GTK3 apps to render fonts correctly? I don't use any DE, just dwm as window manager.

Stupid me!
The cairo-ubuntu from AUR had failed to build. Followed Ichigo-Roku's tip in comments and now everything works.

In the PKGBUILD you have to replace "autoreconf" by "autoreconf -fi".
Anyway, thanks for your help and sorry for taking your time.

  • [SOLVED] GTK3 Themes Not Rendering Correctly in OpenBox

So, I've been trying to find a way to fix this issue for a while now. In OpenBox, GTK3 applications do not display correctly when using a theme based on Adwaita. An example theme would be Elegant Brit. Menus tend to shift a pixel over when highlighted. Buttons display as all white, or as buttons from a different theme. Dunno what causes this, but it's rather annoying. I have the "gnome-standard-themes" packages installed, but this resolves nothing. When starting a GTK3 application, these types of errors are shown.
    (transmission-gtk:1274): Gtk-CRITICAL **: _gtk_css_section_to_string: assertion `section != NULL' failed

I apologize if there's a solution to this somewhere already posted. I've been through the Wiki trying to find the solution, but I've really found nothing useful. Also, I already have "gtk-engines" and "lib32-gtk-engines" installed.

This great discussion about GTK3 and GNOME3 development explains an awful lot. It seems we are heading for one GTK3 theme only - THE theme - as dictated by determined developers attached to certain companies who will be nameless! I almost started tinkering with tweaks to GTK3 themes and I'm now so glad I didn't waste my time.

  • LibreOffice Fonts Not Rendering Smoothly

This is kind of hard to explain, but in LibreOffice Writer (GNOME) the fonts don't seem to render smoothly when changing to zoom factor.  It's like when you zoom in, rather than adjusting the font size smoothly, the letters just end up looking bold.  They only look normal at <=100%.  It's strange.  This issue occurs for all fonts.
    Any help is appreciated!

Yeah, your fonts look fine...  I tried installing the package you mentioned (Ubuntu version) but see no difference...

  • [SOLVED] Some text not rendering in Gnome after update

After a recent update some text is not rendering in Gnome. For example, look at the url bar of chromium in this screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/A2Qyw.png
Here's a "screenshot" of some text not rendering in gnome-terminal:
    $ echo -e "I like pizza\nI like pizza\nI like pizza"

    ...blank line...
    ...blank line...
    ...blank line...
It basically renders my desktop environment worthless. I don't see anything suspicious in /var/lob/Xorg.0.log. Here are some of the packages I've updated recently:

  • Fonts not rendered same on iPad and Mac, Safari

Hindi fonts are not rendered the same in Safari running on iMac and iPad.
Safari on iMac works much better for Hindi, It is similar to Firefox.
Firefox works best on both Mac and PC.
    Can this be fixed?

Hindi has never been supported on the iphone or ipod touch, and it is also not supported on the iPad, which uses the same OS. Apple lists the supported languages in the tech specs for these products. There is no way to change these.
To tell Apple you want Hindi added, go here:

  • Fonts not rendering properly. Am I missing something?

I have PS Elements 10 for Mac. I've been trying to figure out why my text is not rendering properly. I type out a word and although caps lock is OFF, the text shows up in all caps. Also, the spacing between letters is wide. I've been trying to search through help and options, but can't find anything. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong?

At the far left of the options bar is a tiny triangle. Click it and choose Reset Tool from the popout menu.

  • Fonts Not Rendering Properly in Photoshop Elements 11

For some odd reason, Elements stopped rendering my fonts properly.  For instance, if I use an old standby like Rage Italic, the lettering is not smooth rather choppy like an old System type font.  I've tried uninstalling and then reinstalling but nothing seems to work.  I also reset the tools and still nothing.

  • Non-English fonts not rendering correctly in iMovie 10.0.3?

I use xenotype Tibetan font in iMovie and it has always rendered correctly until I updated from 10.0.2 to 10.0.3. Now many of the stacked characters do not render correctly in any of the titles. Even projects that I made three months ago with 10.0.2 when opened in the new version render the font incorrectly. Is there a reason for this change? Is there any adjustment I can do? Line-height adjustment? iMovie 10.0.3 seems to be the only Mac software currently made by apple that doesn't render the font correctly.

    Hello,
Welcome to the discussions. There have been some transition problems reported, although maybe not so many problems as you are experiencing.
I had the black/flash with the transition cross-dissolve in one of my movies recently. I found the suggestions in this thread to resolve that: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3842119#3842119
Have a look and see if it can help you.

  • Fonts not rendering properly in Safari 3.1 (5525.13) in Leopard

Most web pages are coming out with strange line spacing -- letters squished together of far apart or completely missing. When I change default font sizes in preferences, it will help one page and cause another to render illegibly. I have my Standard Font set at Times New Roman 12. Should I be using a different version of Times. I just checked and even changing fonts completely doesn't solve the issue.

  • Fonts not rendering in safari?

After an uneventful upgrade to lion, I have found that on many web pages, fonts aren't rendering - I get a placeholder for a character, but it's obviously unreadable.
Changing the fonts in the preferences doesn't help; and other browsers do not have this issue. Just safari, and only after upgrading to Lion.
    Any ideas?

Apparently Lion's version of Safari doesn't approve of the use of the fonts in my boot camp partition, and Consolas was the offending font.
Curiously, when consolas is enabled in Lion, Safari doesn't render _any_ monospaced fonts, even if the monospaced font selected in Preferences is Menlo or Monaco.
I've seen similar issues visiting microsoft sites - here, disabling all of the microsoft fonts on my boot camp partition was necessary.
I really like consolas; I would have already done it if I knew it wouldn't break on Lion - maybe the commercial version works where the one Microsoft distributes doesn't; but as it's a gamble at this point, I guess I'll have to use something else...

  • Fonts not Rendering in PDFs Adobe Acrobat, Preview

We use custom fonts for a lot of our work as designers. Some of these fonts, particularly 'Oswald' renders terribly in any PDF in OSX Yosemite.on
These fonts render correctly in MS Word in Mac and Windows computers (sigh).
Please advise and thanks in advance.

I had the same problem as you with the same font. It turns out it's a bug with OpenType fonts, so convert it to a TrueType font instead, and it's fixed!

Remove old fonts from Library\Fonts folder, install new TTF files. Tada!

  • Cfdocument: font not rendering

Hi: I have a webpage that prints a photo with text underneath that is in specific fonts.
This works fine when it is rendered as a normal webpage: the fonts display exactly as they should, but when I wrap the code with a CFDOCUMENT tage the fonts revert to standard fonts i.e., the wrong donts.
I'm tearing my hair out. Does anyone have any ideas?
    thanks.

  • Translate iBook to Japanese/Japanese font not rendering

Hi, I'm currently working on an iBook that is to be translated into Spanish, Italian, and Japanese. Whereas Spanish and Italian will not be an issue, I am trying to figure out how to display Japanese characters in iBA and am having trouble. I noticed that a number of IBA-safe fonts (I'm currently trying to use Osaka but am open to any other suggestions) are available, however when I attempt to type anything with them, only the English characters appear.
Ultimately, my client will be suppling a full document in Japanese that I'll simply flow into the layout, so my only concern is getting the characters to render properly.
    Any ideas?
Is it even possible to use Japanese in iBA? If not, I need to let the client know ASAP.
    Many thanks.

You can't switch languages by switching fonts on a computer.  Instead you have to switch the keyboard layout, and then the correct font is used automatically.  For OS X, you go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and check the box for the keyboard you want (Kotoeri for Japanese), plus the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar.  Then you select your keyboard from the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen and type.

  • [SOLVED] Console Font Not Retained After Reboot

Hi, again.  Happy to report that I successfully installed Arch Linux last night, with no problems whatsoever.  Thanks to those who addressed my concerns.  Still reading up on the package manager, user and group management, etc.
Anyway, one of the first things I noticed is that the console font gets reset after every reboot.  I need to manually type "setfont Lat2-Terminus16" - which works just fine, except for the annoyance in having to do that each time I boot up.  My /etc/vconsole.conf has the following:
    KEYMAP=us
    FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
    Following the solution described here:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=155876
I added 'consolefont' (without quotes) to the beginning (first item) of the HOOKS line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.  Then I rebuilt the initramfs by typing "mkinitcpio -p linux".  Again, no errors during the rebuild.
I've rebooted several times, but there's no change...  my selected console font is not retained.
Can anyone point what I'm doing wrong, or offer ideas?  Thanks.

    Have you tried
If the fonts seems to not change on boot, or change only temporarily, it is most likely that they got reset when graphics driver was initialized and console was switched to framebuffer. To avoid this, load your graphics driver earlier. See for example KMS#Early_KMS_start or other ways to setup your framebuffer before /etc/vconsole.conf gets applied.
