SOLVED: GTX 770 Fan Speed Stuck at Full

Ever since I set up my GTX 770 in my computer, the fan speed appears to be set on full constantly. I have tried to use MSI Afterburner to solve the problem, but to no avail as adjusting the fan speed curve in Afterburner seems to do nothing. As soon as it boots, the fans ramp up to what sounds like max and stay like that. I was wondering if there was anyone else with this problem and if I can fix it.
Thanks in advance,
muddyducky
EDIT: Turns out it was actually every other fan in my computer running at 4000rpm that caused it - managed to turn it down in MSI Control Centre :P

Do you still have a question/problem?

Thanks, already know my way around Afterburner though . Its limited to 80% max fan speed... thats the issue! I want to unlock the 100% fan speed.
I downloaded the newest GTX 580 BIOS from the MSI website, and modified it with NiBiTor. There are numerous articles on how to do, and flash the BIOS properly, with a google search.

  • GT735 fan speed stuck at 30% under XP SP3 - crashes in games

    Good day.
XP SP3 appears to not let the fan speed be adjusted according to the thermals, leading to overheating and BSODs pointing to
driver deadlocks in ati2dvag in graphically-intensive games.
Even such an old game as Deus Ex crashed once, whereas things like warcraft 3 tft, even on minimal settings, crash after about 10 minutes of gaming.
Neither the fan noise, nor GPU-Z readings (it has a file logging facility) indicate fan speed variation.
Latest, hacked up (for M88 support) ATI desktop drivers didn't change the situation.
Neither there appear to be any utility for manual fan speed adjustment for the SB700 southbridge -- the AMD's own
Overdrive utility is useless in this regard. Other things tried were: SpeedFan, CPUCool, the Linux kernel and Linux's standalone lm-sensors.
Update: it was ati2dvag, not ATI2Diag.exe

This is not a desktop machine, you should let the laptop control the speeds of the fan.
And you also should use the MSI drivers as they are adjusted to the machine.
What on earth are you trying to do? Game and make the laptop silent?
I wish the laptop controlled the speed of the fan, but it doesn't -- which is the entire issue.

  • HT1338 MBP gets heated upto 70 celcius, but fan speed stuck at 2000rpm

Service center person didn't found any fault.
    What to do

In my opinion, 2000 rpm at 70ºC are normal. Moreover, I don't recommend fan speeds higher than 2000 rpm to prevent future hardware problems.
Anyway, you can check yourself if there's a problem with the fan. To do it, run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 To run it, connect your computer to the charger and follow the steps of the link in order to run Apple Hardware Test. Then, choose your language, tick the option to run an extended test and start the test.
If, at the end, you see an error, copy it here. If not, your computer is working properly

  • One of my MSI GTX 780-fans gets stuck on 100% every now and then :(

Every now and then (randomly and not very often) one of the fans on my MSI GTX 780 gets stuck on 100% after windows 7 (64 bit) have loaded.
It is impossible to get it to slow down by using any software or by restarting the computer (or even by turning it off).
The Only way to get it back to normal functioning is to open the computer and stop the fan with my hands for a while. After that it works like it should, until next time this bug happens.
Has anyone experienced anything like it?  Can it be solved or is the card broken?

flobelix will give you the program needed (a link to it at least) and the information of how to so it!
but he needs 2 things from you!
1: the serial number of your MSI GTX 780 (leave off the last 3 digits)
2: a copy of your cards current VBIOS (download this http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/ and run it and it will bring up GPU-Z and then click on the little icon at the end of BIOS Version and choose save to file (should be a under 1MB file) then upload it to somewhere like dropbox.com and give us a link to it there)

  • FYI: fan stuck at full speed

I updated my Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz today to Yosemite but the fan got stuck at full speed. I suspected the HDD temperature sensor was the root cause because I replaced the HDD with an SSD some time ago, but SSD Fan Control pointed out that the optical drive temperature sensor was the root cause. After opening the Mac Mini I noticed that the optical drive temperature sensor socket (so not the connector) had decided to dislodge itself slightly from the main board today. Fixing it with some tape solved the issue. iStat Menus only showed one temperature sensor (HDD 1) before I fixed it. It now also shows a second temperature sensor (Optical/HDD 2).

  • The ultimate G5 fan problem: CPU Intake Fan speed error

Another saga of fan overdrive blowing. I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.0Ghz, about 3 years old. About 1 year ago, had fan blowing after sleep problems (fans blow super hard, cannot wake from sleep). Eventually resolved this with Apple Care by near-total hardware replacement: fan replacement, fan sensor replacement, case replacement, finally logic board replacement. Problem fixed for 1 year.
Recently problem started again. Now, the fans blow full speed all the time, from the moment of boot (before OS loads). At first, resetting NVRAM from Open Firmware fixed the problem, but after a day or two it would start again. Now, nothing works - although if i manually put computer to sleep, the fans do turn off, and computer does wake up, which is nice.
I have tried the following well-known fixes, none of which has worked:
    - Repaired Disk Permissions from boot CD
    - Set Processor Performance to Highest
    - Trashed Energy Saver prefs
    - Removed all peripherals
    - Removed RAM
    - Took out hard drives
    - Reset PRAM
    - Reset NVRAM (from Open Firmware)
    - Reset PMU (motherboard button)
    - Replaced PRAM battery
    - Checked inner (clear plexi) door sensor
    - Cleaned out dust from inside case
    - Check temperatures, all i think within normal range (<40 degrees (c), except GPU which is 65)
    - Reinstalled OS X (archive)
Finally I obtained the legendary Apple Service Diagnostic disc.
    - Ran Apple Service Diagnostic
    - all hardware passed
    - Ran ASD fan calibration
    - "Error CPU0: CPU intake fan speed error. Check that inner door is secure and in place."
The inner door is indeed in place, and as far as I can tell the sensor is working since the indicator red LED on the logic board turns on and off when you remove the door. Is there another way to check that sensor?
What else can I try? I've spent about 40 hours on this so far... The only thing I have not done is take out and reseat the CPU's, but as far as i can tell the only reason to do that is to force older versions of ASD to allow temperature calibration - but ASD v2.5.8 fixes that.

I am having the same problem with a dual 2GHz G5. It runs fine, all temperatures look normal (in the 30-40 degree range), but all the fans are stuck on full.
There's a bit of history here: I used this machine for a while and intermittently it would completely freeze and the fans would increase to full speed (presumably to prevent damage to the components). This was never fixed because it happened only about once a month. Then, all of a sudden, it failed to start up completely. I figured it was a bad logic board. So now I have swapped the logic board, resulting in the computer seeming working fine apart from the full fan speed.
I read that the reason for this is that it needs a thermal recalibration. So I ran the Apple Service Diagnostic disk version 2.5.8 and it does indeed report that the CPUs require calibration. Unfortunately about 10 minutes after starting the calibration it reports "Error CPU0: CPU intake fan speed error. Check that inner door is secure and in place." The inner door is indeed secure and in place and indeed the red LED does come on if the inner door is removed, proving that the sensor is working properly.
e.f. - if you have any luck with the things that you are trying please post back here.

  • MSI GTX 770 TF minimum fan speed limit

Hi guys, seen a few others with the same problem here, but haven't found any solution.
I have GTX 770 TF and my problem is that I can't set the RPM lower than 34%, which is about 1000RPM. Core temperature in idle is 33C and these two fans are the only thing moving in my case, that's why I would love to change this behaviour (possibility to turn of the fans will be the best case scenario)
Tried Kepler BIOS tweaker with no success and I'm not willing to pay for Svet's application with no guarantee that it will help me change anything.
So the question is: is anyone here that solved this issue?

So I bought a new cooler - Prolimatech MK-26 and two Noctua F12 fans. I connected the fans to the fan connector on the card and... !? I can't set the fans to less than 1000RPM! Even though these fans can spin at 300RPM and even though the temperature of the GPU is around 30C. So the card does not limit the fan speed settings, it limits it's rotation speed to 1000RPM. And this limitation doesn't seem to be in BIOS.
So if you want a really silent GPU, DON'T BUY NVIDIA!!! This limitation is stupid and it has no sense (it's not related to temperature), even the stock cooler would be deadly silent in idle without this "feature". Those two F12s can cool this card down even in afterburner, with power limit set to 111%, boost clock all the time.

  • [Solved] Asus L1366 mobo, cpu fan speed control

    Hi, everyone,
I finally have this new core i7 system, to replace my old AMD athlonx2.  I have one question about the CPU fan speed control.
I remember that in my old system, the cpu fan speed control works out of box, no configuration is needed.
But when I install arch 64 on this new i7 system, the cpu fan is running at its maximum speed constantly while the CPU temperature is modestly low. I know there is a wiki teaching how to do it.
However, I am just curious why it doens't work out of box any more? Does CPU fan control work for you guys out of box normally? especially the new Core i7 cpu users?
Please let me know, really appreciated it.
    Thanks a lot.
Update: the issue is solved, see my last post, the solution is blacklisting: asus_atk0110, instead use w83667hg.
    Cheers.

First off, it would be useful to know what the sensors-detect script actually reports.
Okay. How fan control works on Linux: First, navigate to /sys/class/hwmon
Each of these folders, i.e. hwmon0, stands for a sensors monitor / fan controller on your mainboard that may control one or several fans. Inside hwmonN, there should be a subfolder called device, which contains several interfaces if your BIOS allows software-side fan control. You can read them with cat and write to them with echo.
    Examples:
pwm1_enable shows if OS-level fan control is enabled (1) or disabled and in BIOS control (0). Changing fan speed won't work if this is disabled. (i.e. cat /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable reports 0 -> disabled; you could enable it with echo 1 > /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable).
pwm1 allows to change fan speed. The values range from 0 (fan off) to 255 (full speed, 12V).
fan1_input shows the current RPM if a fan is connected. You can only read from this interface. Its useful to check all of these in the each of the hwmon folders to find out if there is actually a fan connected to the fan controller (they often have more ports than mainboard manufacturers use).
There might be a fan1_div, this is somehow related to how the kernel reads the RPM, I don't know how it works.
temp1_input interfaces can appeare too, if some of the chips have temperature sensors located somewhere. I *think* lm_sensors places the core temperatures it reads from CPU (the coretemp-isa-000X thingies) in one of the hwmon-folders too.
There might be interfaces for different fans in the same hwmon folder, i.e. pwm2_enable, pwm2, fan2_input, etc., all interfaces with the same index belong to the same physical fan connector, and all in the same hwmonN are managed by the same IC on your mainboard.
Warning: These interfaces, if they work, control the fans directly without any kind of security measure. If you shut some essential fan down, it will stay off until you reboot your CPU shuts down.
(If you see something likein0_alarm, in0_input, in0_max, etc. it's a voltage monitoring chip.)
If one of those interfaces can do something, OS-level fan control does work, if none of those folders contain a working pwm interface, fan control seems to be unavailable.
Sometimes there is an option in the BIOS to enable it, and for some BIOSs software-side fan control only works if dynamic fan control is disabled in the BIOS and fan speed is set to a static value - or vice versa.
I don't know what you are using to control fan speed, there are many applications that use these interfaces, i.e. GNOME or KDE power managers, so I'm not sure what is happening:
    IF: Windows 7 enables OS-level fan control and sets it the RPM to those you observed and you have nothing that provides fan control in Arch and so fan control stays at BIOS-level, which might also read out a different sensor / the same sensor differently or it might be more conservative in setting fan speeds altogether;
OR: You have something that provides fan control installed in Arch and it reads out a the wrong value supplied by lm_sensors and thus sets a higher fan speed.
Anyway, possible solutions I can think of:
Find out if you have some kind of fan control software and what it does. For example, I use the fancontrol daemon, I can't help you if you use something else.
The wiki mentions how to assign a fan speed to a certain temperature sensors. You might assign it to a different one. For example, there are no sensor chips on the mainboard of my EEE (no temp1 etc.) so I assigned the fan speed to the temperature reported by the BIOS via ACPI (those are in /sys/class/thermal, also no "device" subfolder on EEEs):
    FCTEMPS=/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/pwm1=/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
You could also change the MINTEMP/MAXTEMP values to one higher than those you actually want to compensate for the effect of lm_sensors reporting temperatures that are too high.
It is currently not possible for a mortal user to change the coretemps lm_sensors reads, see this post, last paragraph.
There is a configuration file, /etc/sensors3.conf, you can change sensor names and adjust offsets here, but only for the monitoring chips and their sensors that are on the mainboard.

  • Impossible to turn off GPU fan on GTX 770?

The fan on my GPU is annoying and I'd like to turn it off completely.
I've secured that there's a good air flow and temperature in my case, and as I'm not gaming these months, it should be okay to turn off the GPU fan.
I tried using MSI Afterburner, but you can't set the fan speed any lower than 26% of max. fan speed.

It is not possible to turn off the fan via software as the vga's firmware will ensure that it is running at least at minimum speed to seed up when needed. GTX770 unlike new Maxwell gpus should also be too hot to be cooled passively with the standard heatsink. If you want to stop the fans none the less you need to unplug them from the pwm header of the card. As the card couldn't start the fans at dangerous temps then it would be quite risky. Note that not only the gpu but also vrms might overheat.

  • One of my MacBook Pro's fans is running at full speed

Out of the blue today, my 2011 MacBook Pro started fans went mental when I awoke if from it's sleep. They started running at full speed, far louder than I've ever heard them before. I searched through other discussions and it suggested I try an SMC reset. I performed one of these with no success.
I then opened smcFanControl and noticed that my leftside fan was running at 7000rpm+ and the rightside fan was running at normal speed 2000rpm. It randomly spools on and off high speed and I cannot find any fixes or similar problems online. Can anyone suggest a fix for this or should I be taking it to a repairer?
FYI my logic board was only replaced in April under warranty so could it be faulty?

    Hi andyBall_uk
SMC fan control measures temp also. Currently running at 47*C as you can see in the screenshot below. I tried overriding the fan speeds...works for the right fan but not the left one so it appears only the left fan has the fault.
The weird thing is, when you press your finger down anywhere on the left speaker next to the built-in keyboard, the fan slows back down to normal speed, but when you let go it speeds back up again. I might open it up in the morning to see if any of the connections are loose, because it seems weird that this happens with a small amount of pressure applied to the body. Also of you tilt the macbook it sometimes slows back down to normal speed (but sometimes stays at high speed). I will let you know how I go. Thanks for your suggestion/s
