[SOLVED]hal and network not running on boot

My hal and network are not running on boot.  I have to manually start them once I login.  I have put them as Daemons in rc.conf and it still does not seem to help.
Thanks!

I figured out what was wrong, the D in Daemons for the rc.conf file was a lowercase d for whatever reason.  But now I have a bigger problem, I seem to have lost the files for my sound card.  I used to have the soundcard listed in alsamixer.  Now it is not there.  when I do a
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
it is not listed, although it used to.  however I can still
modprobe snd-emu10k1
It is the Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1  I have tried to reinstall alsa.  I reinstalled alsa-utils and alsa-oss, but I am not sure how to uninstall alsa-lib because of dependencies.  PLEASE HELP.

  • [SOLVED] udevd and udevadm not found and failure to boot

I did a system upgrade and installed nvidia and cuda
and afterwards archlinux failed to boot properly. saying
/init line 21 udevd not found
/init line 21 udevadm not found
it then goes on to say how it could findthe hard disk that grub2 told it about.
OK, I was then presented with a fairly spartan cmdline, and looked up that line in init and it is "parse_cmdline".
So what I'd like is to get an orientation on the problem. Naturally I've done a bit of searching on it, though the search was brief.
In any case, my ideas are:
    - this is not a grub2 problem. Without udev a good grub won't work.
    - the cmdline I get is the ramdisk, and mounting the harddisk will be futile without udev.
    - the ramdisk is messed up and not the harddisk (this is a hope, rather than a conclusion)
    Accordingto this short thread https://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail … 32762.html
where I noticed that yes indeed, there is a seemingly broken symlink in the ramdisk's /lib64.
So I expect I should recreate the ramdisk, but though there is a bunch of information on this, I'm not clear how I can do it from the ramdisk image. I suspect I can't. So, seeing as I can't get in to my archlinux HD installation, I need to try the archlinux install CD. However Im not sure I can generate it there. Maybe I need to mount the installation from the CD and chroot?
    Any helpful advice/guidance welcome. Cheers!

I followed my logic and loaded up with the CD and mounted on /mnt and chrooted.
    then
    mkinitcpio -p linux
as per docs and numerous posts.
    and rebooted.
This finally allowed me into my arch installation.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • (SOLVED) Hal and dbus, do I need dbus?

I read the wiki and it says if I don't use hal in my daemons then I need to add dbus.
I haven't been using hal, and I haven't added dbus either. My system seems to be working right, but I guess something could be wrong. Reading the wiki brings me here to ask if I need dbus and why?

    Just my 1.46¢
You're right, problem wasn't actually solved. In fact, yesterday I upgraded the whole system again and the same problem showed up, but I got it fixed.
Same scenario: after a boot (shorter than usual), what I had was a tty, but I noticed something that I hadn't noticed the last time: the prompt said "Arch Linux 3.11.[?]".
The kernel version was supposed to be 3.12.[?] so I started investigating and after several attempts, this is how I got the system working again:
    1. Chrooted into the system
    2. Wiped /boot
    3. Re-installed grub
    4. Re-installed linux kernel
    5. Re-created grub.cfg
    6. ???
    7. Profit
I'm pretty sure that what originated the problem wasn't a "kernel issue" as I pointed out in my previous post, but it was an incorrect installation of grub: in fact, the grub prompt never showed up before yesterday, the system used to boot straight, ignoring the 5 seconds timeout.

  • [SOLVED]Can Some Processes Not Run In Background

    Hi,
Can some process just not run in the background? I have an irc bot and I want irssi to continue running even after I exit. I do
    $irssi
    ctrl-z
    bg
    But after bg it says
    [1] irssi &
    [1] irssi STOPPED
I've also tried sending the kill CONT signal but it just always stops. Is there another way I should do it for this type of process? Thanks!

Is there no way to run irssi in the background (disowned) with just the built in bash commands? My main goal is to have it running (with me logged into servers) when I exit the terminal.

  • How do I import multi-level bookmarks from IE 8 to FireFox 17 if IE 8 is broken, cannot re-install it, and will not run?

IE 8 is still installed, but will not run. I cannot install any version of IE--I tried. I can import only first level bookmarks. Solutions in forum assume a working IE 8.

If you have problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.

  • Background job in Released status and does not run. What is the problem?

    Hi Experts,
I ran a ABAP report as a background job. But when I see the job status in SM37 I found that it is "Released" but the job does not run further, It remains in "Released" state. I have given the correct variant and start condition "immediate" . Moreover there is no spool and log as well.
The ABAP report runs fine in forground. It used to run in background few days back.
What could be the problem? Kindly help!
    Thanks
    Gopal

    Hi Bob,
But I checked after 2 days still the job status is in Released state.  There were some other jobs that ran successfully. So atleast after two days I hope the job should have run. I can't even delete it. What shall I do?
    Thanks

  • [SOLVED]: wusb600n v2 adaptor not detected on boot

    Hi,
I've only just installed arch linux. Only thing installed, on top of base and base-devel, is yaourt netcfg ntfs-3g-ar and the driver for the mentioned wireless adapter (and all the dependencies for these).
I'm having issues with the wusb600n v2 wireless adapter, I can't automatically connect to a network on boot using netcfg and network-profiles because it isn't detected on boot (can't find interface ra0).
Just after booting and using lsusb shows that the adapter isn't connected, though it is.
Unplugging and replugging in the adapter after booting up it shows up in lsusb and I can then connect to the internet as normal.
Just wondering if anyone can give any suggestions as to why it isn't being detected during the boot process.
edit: if there is any additional information that needs to be provided let me know
edit: I think it may be a dodgy usb port, plugging the device in a different usb socket and everything seems to be working fine now ......Hope everyone has a good Christmas!
    Thanks,

I have CS6, Master Suite.  The application manager program is corrupted and will not load.  What can I do?

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not downloading properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
(Not entirely sure what happens after you click that link, but fingers crossed it should be relatively straightforward.)

  • [SOLVED] Pacman and yaourt not working when run with "sudo"

    Hi,
I am an Arch newbie, just installed Arch 3.10 on my machine. I access internet through a proxy server and I'm facing this strange problem -
Pacman is unable to fetch packages when I run it through sudo - "sudo pacman -S smplayer" (It gives network unreachable error).
However when I run it through root, it retrieves those same packages successfully.
yaourt also faces a similar kind of problem -
When I run it through sudo or as root, it is unable to retrieve packages which can be downloaded by pacman. But, when I run pacman to download those same packages, it is able to do so.
I am using gnome 3.8, and use radiotray ( It's for listening online radios ). When I run it via 'Alt-F2' or as a startup application, it's not able to connect to any radio station ( which means it's not connecting to the internet ). However, on running it via terminal, it connects to the internet successfully. Are these 2 problems related ? I'm facing the first one even without loading gnome, so it's not gnome's problem, i guess.
I can ping successfully through my administrator as well as root account, connect to the internet via browser, and ssh, git, bzr are also working fine.
What can I do to resolve this ?
    Thanks

Regarding Arch 3.10, yes i meant the installation media from 2013.09.01 ( kernel 3.10 )
That's why root works, but not sudo. Sudo clears the environment. See man sudo and man sudoers.
